Willie Cawley-Stein is told that he thinks about paintings more than the game.

The fate of a professional athlete usually does not involve life-threatening political activism. "Mediazona" tells about the basketball player Enes Kanter, who alone is fighting with two heads of state - and is not going to stop.
A young man wearing a T-shirt with a photo of the Dalai Lama reads a message. “Do you know that possessing a photo of the Dalai Lama in Tibet is reason enough for an arrest? What kind of Tibetan national flag can also be arrested? he throws up his hands, condemning decades of Chinese struggle against dissent in the region. “Aren't you ashamed, the Chinese authorities? The Chinese dictatorship is erasing Tibetan identity and culture!”
Turkish basketball player Enes Kanter plays for the Boston Celtics of the American NBA. “The Hitler of our century” is how Kanter calls Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan. "Fierce dictator" - and so he refers to the Chinese leader Xi Jinping. If such a choice of phrases is expected from a politician or activist, then the NBA basketball player attracts attention.
The video about Tibet was not a reaction to any specific case, and such statements are not new for Kanter: a couple of months earlier, he wrote that “after meetings with respected historians and scientists” he understood a lot about the Armenian genocide by the Turks, and responsibility for his ignorance in this matter, he blames "the nationalist and biased Turkish educational system, which turns a blind eye to the suffering of millions of people.

However, if in the case of his native Turkey, the basketball player has nothing to lose (where he is put on the wanted list and there are practically no chances to return from the USA), then the fight with official Beijing has become a new page in his biography for him.
In September, Kanter published a column, co-authored by Russian chess player Garry Kasparov, about the speeches of "dictators" from Turkey, Russia and China at the UN, and in October it was followed by an address about Tibet. The answer was lightning fast: the Boston Celtics games were taken off the air in China, and the team's Weibo account was filled with replays calling for Kanter to be punished, to make him apologize and kick him out of the NBA.
This did not stop Kanter: he went to the court in sneakers with the Tibetan flag, and then supported the Uyghurs by drawing on the sneakers a superman with the flag of East Turkestan tearing red barbed wire.
“Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party.
Someone should have taught you a lesson and I will never apologize for the truth. I can't be bought. I can't be intimidated. I can't be silenced. Try it!” - this is a couple of days later, a signature to a completely defiant sneaker: a man with a basketball stops tanks with the heads of dead Winnie the Poohs attached to the towers; the picture refers to the famous photograph of the "Unknown Rebel" from Tiananmen Square.
The next day, Kanter made an appeal to Nike , the official supplier of uniforms for NBA teams, and its founder Phil Knight, suggesting the latter "take tickets to China and fly there together" to "visit slave labor camps and look at all with your own eyes."
"Nike are hypocrites," Kanter wrote on a shoe he wore to a game, explaining that the company's support for human rights movements in the US does not translate into support for human rights in China. Comments Nike has not yet followed, earlier the company emphasized that it does not use raw materials from Xinjiang, where the Uighurs live.
Finally, a couple of days later, Kanter set a tangible goal for himself to get the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics cancelled. He also wrote this on the sneakers (“No rights, no games”) and added variants of the flags of Tibet, Taiwan, Hong Kong, East Turkestan and Inner Mongolia there.
Drawings for a basketball player are made by Chinese immigrant artist Badiucao , which is known for its cartoons of Chinese leadership. “When you yourself are not from the country that suffers from an authoritarian regime like China, it is difficult to force yourself to really worry about this situation or understand it,” he comments on cooperation with Kanter. “The NBA as a platform and as a sport in general is a wonderful way to get the word out for human rights. Because suddenly every NBA fan in America and around the world is thinking about this problem.
The previous major scandal between the NBA and China erupted two years ago, when Houston Rockets team principal Daryl Morey tweeted a picture amid Hong Kong protests against the region's forceful integration into Chinese politics: "Fight for freedom, support Hong Kong.
" At that time, Chinese channels also took Rockets games off the air, sponsors refused contracts, Chinese publications threatened to sanction the entire NBA, and Maury and team leader James Harden had to apologize.
The NBA issued a then-questionable statement about Maury's "embarrassing" tweet that "deeply offended many of our friends and fans in China", was heavily criticized in the US and forced to take a tougher stance: NBA chief Adam Silver announced that the Chinese side even demanded that Mori be fired, but he ruled out taking any action.
The NBA has become one of the most visible "activist" sports leagues in recent years, with basketball players constantly talking about the importance of using their media to advance a social agenda, wearing T-shirts with slogans, going on strike or refusing to comply with demands that go against their beliefs - and outsiders observers either praise or scold them for this. But Kanter's case, even against this background, stands out both in terms of involvement in political activity and in terms of consequences for himself.
At 29, Kanter, a ten-year NBA center, has yet to win a title, but has been lucky enough to play side by side with the brightest personalities of modern professional basketball: the unstoppable Russell Westbrook, the methodical Kevin Durant and the well-read Jaylen Brown. And by the time he was 29, Kanter was a terrorist defendant with a dozen arrest warrants, a stateless man with a revoked passport, who was dragged out of Romania by US senators. Now he lives only in crowded American hotels and sleeps with an FBI panic button by the bed due to frequent threats.
Kanter is a longtime supporter of the disgraced Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, whom the Erdoğan government accuses of orchestrating the failed 2016 coup. Then several thousand military men tried to occupy key facilities in the country's cities, launched airstrikes on the presidential palace and tried to detain Erdogan, but nothing came of it. This failure was followed by large-scale purges in the security forces, state institutions and the press, as well as mass arrests and criminal prosecutions of suspected ties to Gülen, who was proclaimed the creator of the "parallel state" of the conspirators; he himself denies the accusations and hints at the production.
“Parallel state” is not an accidental wording: it was believed that before the last purges, Gülen supporters, without being united in any official party, occupied numerous posts in ministries, cultural institutions and other organizations. Both Erdogan and Gulen are in favor of increasing the role of Islam in public life as opposed to secularism, although from different platforms: if the current leader of Turkey is close to the connection of religion with politics, then the Gulenists are more likely to declare a desire for cultural spirituality. The relative similarity of positions helped Erdogan and Gülen work together in the 2000s: the former used the informal structures of the latter to consolidate power and reduce the political influence of the army. In 2013, after the defeat of the military, it was the turn of the Gülenists, and the “parallel state” turned from a support into a major threat.
The connection with Gülen became the reason for the campaign against the basketball player in his homeland.
As a child, Kanter studied at schools associated with the Gülen movement, then went to play basketball in the United States, where Gülen himself lives after the break with Erdogan, and became close to the teacher personally. The basketball player spoke out against Erdogan amid the 2013 corruption scandal, and after the coup attempt, he was made a real enemy of the state.
“NBA Gulenist Kanter’s Family Rejected” — this headline was published in the newspaper in 2016 Daily Sabah , where genetics professor Mehmet Kanter apologized "to the Turkish people and the president" for his son. In response, he issued an emotional appeal signed “Enes (Kanter) Gülen”, but in the end he did not abandon his native surname.
Public self-flagellation did not save Professor Kanter from persecution: he was fired from Istanbul University, and in 2018 he was sent to prison for a 15-year term on the same charge of links with Gülen - he was released in 2020 after a review of the case.
“Happy birthday, father. It's been seven years now,” wrote Kanter's son in January of this year. “I will continue to do what you taught me to fight for what is right.”
While Kanter is fighting Erdogan, Erdogan is fighting Kanter: in 2017, the athlete was almost detained in Indonesia at the request of Ankara, and he had to leave the country on an urgent flight at night. “Hello world,” he recorded a video message a few hours later at the Bucharest airport. - I just wanted to say that we are now in Romania, and they tell us that my passport has been canceled by the Turkish embassy. We are guarded here for hours by two policemen. The reason, of course, is my political views.”
Just a couple of weeks before Kanter, Ankara successfully used a similar method of forced deportation to their homeland in Malaysia, whose authorities immediately extradited three men accused of having links with Gülenists. In Kanter's case, after several hours of confusion, lawyers for the Oklahoma City Thunder and both Oklahoma senators were able to arrange through the State Department to fly Kanter to the United States, where he received a green card and is now undergoing the procedure for obtaining citizenship.
The Turkish authorities later tried to add the basketball player to Interpol's wanted list of terrorists, but their request has yet to be approved. “If I terrorize anyone, then only basketball hoops,” the player retorted.
