NBA Players Wingspan – Role of Wingspan in Basketball Game

Last Updated February 13, 2022 by Edward Pullen

Back in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, players and coaches never really thought of measuring the NBA Players Wingspan. However, now it has become one of the most significant measurements in professional basketball games. Along with the height, length, and stretch of the arms are considered to be important since the last decade.

Calculating a wingspan is quite easy, just like an airplane or a bird, stretch your arms and measure from the fingertips of one hand to the fingertips of the other. Best of all, short guys used to consider a little useless in a basketball game. But, if they have a good wingspan and can jump higher, they perform even better than taller athletes because of their speed.

Irrespective of Indoor Basketball or Outdoor Basketball games, the wingspan of the athletes have equal importance in both courts.

Importance of NBA Players Wingspan:

As I have mentioned above, the wingspan in basketball is getting recognized lately due to its importance in the game. It really helps players in blocking the shot and holding the opponents from getting to the rim.

Basketball coaches appreciate players with long arms due to their ability to easily grab rebounds and steal passes. Moreover, they can block shots and shoot over defenders. Therefore, a bigger wingspan is always helping players whether it is deflection, defense, or blocking shots.

Another well-known term for wingspan is the ape index which is known as the ratio of arm span to the height of a person.

How to Calculate Wingspan

Knowing your wingspan is important especially if you want to participate in basketball professional leagues. Tall basketball players have the advantage of genetics and physic. On the other hand, if you are a short player but have above average wingspan – you’ll still be considered a good asset to the team.

To calculate your wingspan, follow the below steps;

  • Stand straight having an athletic posture
  • Stretch your arms horizontally straight in a way that both hands are parallel to your shoulders
  • Now, measure the length from the fingertips of one hand to the fingertips of the other hand
  • The reading your get on the inches tape is your wingspan

See which NBA teams are without a championship title.

Wingspan of Popular Players in NBA

  • LeBron James Wingspan

The wingspan of LeBron James is 7 feet and he is 6 feet 9 inches tall. This wingspan is not extraordinary, just normal according to the height.

Michael Jordan has the highest vertical jump in NBA history.

  • Stephen Curry Wingspan

New superstar of the NBA, Stephen Curry’s wingspan is 6 feet 4 inches and he is 6 feet 3 inches tall.

  • Jimmy Butler Wingspan

Would you like to know Jimmy Butler’s height? He is 6 feet 7 inches tall and the wingspan is almost the same, 6 feet 8 inches.

  • Rajon Rondo Wingspan

Rajon Rondo is 6 feet 1 inch tall and has a very good wingspan considering the height – 6 feet 9 inches.

  • James Harden Wingspan

One of the most popular NBA players, James Harden is 6 feet 5 inches tall and has an excellent wingspan – 6 feet 11 inches.

Statement of Steve Kerr:

One of the best players Steve Kerr had incredible reach, Kerr said, “It’s legit. It’s much more important than your height,” Kerr said. “If your wingspan is more than your height, that’s kind of abnormal. Most of us have the same wingspan as our height. That’s kind of a rule of thumb. A lot of basketball players don’t, though, they have wider wingspans. And they’re able to get their hands on balls or shots or loose balls, I’m a big believer in that”.

As we all desire to play like NBA professional players, but mostly hesitate to participate in school or college leagues. Therefore, I would recommend getting a Portable Basketball Hoop and practice dribbling and dunking skills in the backyard.

On the other hand, if you are a basketball fanatic and desire to explore outdoor basketball courts in the world, read out before you choose any destination. Pack your Spalding or Wilson ball and make sure to carry the right basketball for concrete courts.

0012 or reach (sometimes called wingspan, or spelled "armspan") is the physical measurement of the length of one end of an individual arm (measured at the fingertips) to the other when raised parallel to the ground at shoulder height at a 90° angle. Arm span measurement is usually very close to a person's height. For example, a 168cm (5ft 6in) person would have an arm span of about 168cm (66in). Age, gender, and ethnicity [1] must be taken into account to best predict arm span height. [2] Armspan is sometimes used when height must be measured, but the person cannot stand on a traditional stadiometer or against a wall due to back or leg abnormalities, such as scoliosis, osteoporosis, amputations, or those who are bedridden or disabled chair. Other possibly more accurate measurement methods include knee length or lying length if possible. [3]

Since any reduction in height will increase the span-to-height ratio, a high span-to-height ratio can sometimes be an indicator of a health problem that caused the vertical height loss, such as changes in posture due to aging or any disease spine. such as Degenerative Disc Disease.

Wingspan

“When Birdzilla was born, he, like any child of Hell, was carefully examined. Whether he was small, frail, or ugly, he would be rejected. As soon as he was able to stand on his own two feet, he was baptized in the fire of the first battle. “Never back down and never give up,” with these words he was released into the world. Serving "Denver" became the main goal in his life. Now the Hero is thrown into the elements of nature. This is his choice. The guy, left to certain death, returned after a two-year break. Denver has a new King! Our King Birdzilla!"

This simple message to humanity is a story by Chris Andersen published on his fan site. A person with such a "biography" simply cannot be ordinary. This fact "Birdman" confirms throughout his life.

Formation

Information about the town of Aiola may be of interest to visitors to Wikipedia for only two reasons. After the inhabitants of million-plus cities witness with surprise a population of 350 people, their eyes will stop at the name of the local "hero" Chris Andersen. And many will remember that this is exactly the crazy guy from Denver who is constantly trying to throw the ball as far as possible from the court after the opponent's shots. Whether the inhabitants of Aiola are proud of their popular fellow villager has not yet been established.

Andersen began to show his extraordinary athletic abilities already in early childhood, easily jumping over fences that were a fence for cattle

Andersen began to show his extraordinary athletic abilities already in early childhood, easily jumping over fences that were a fence for cattle. These obstacles were under constant tension, which did not bother the "feathered" Andersen at all.

His family moved to the "dirt county" (that is the unenviable nickname Aiola bears) to start a new life. Having bought ten acres of barren land, the basketball player's father Klaus Andersen planned to go into cattle breeding, build a big house. But in this case, the possibilities did not coincide with the desires. The Danish immigrant was a slave to art he wanted to paint in the largest cities of the country. And in a place where there are more wild boars than people for a hundred miles, he could hardly get recognition. Klaus nevertheless began to build a house: the inhabitants of Aiola could watch how, in a few days, the foundation of a future building with four bedrooms grew in the east of the town. This process was completed: a week later, Klaus disappeared.

This event was a real shock for the family. Linda Hlubets (Andersen's mother) was left without a livelihood. The children April, Chris and Taimi, who loved their unlucky father, could not believe what had happened for several days. Little Andersen all this time was sitting in the barn on the chest, in a daze, pressing his long legs to his chest, and swayed like a pendulum.

Linda Khlubets' brother extended a helping hand to a distressed family. The captain of the ship, using his connections, helped to complete the construction of the house. A playground with a basketball hoop was also a gift from my uncle. It was on it that blond Chris, under the supervision of his mother, studied the basics of basketball. Linda Hlubets herself was a good player in her youth. Therefore, the teacher came out of her very demanding.

But for Chris, basketball was just fun. Baseball was his main game. But he did not have any special abilities.

Andersen also tried himself in American football. Every year, the school coach tried to play Chris at the quarterback position. For his build, the guy had very good speed data 40 yards in 4.7 seconds this result allowed us to talk about good prospects in this event. But Andersen, having looked like training for two or three weeks, lost all interest in this "senseless running around". Nature took its toll: every year adding a few centimeters Chris was doomed to play basketball. Serious advances were given to him by the school coach, who believed that with the proper attitude to business, Andersen could become a real star in school basketball. Without much effort, Chris lived up to all expectations, and the very next year, half of the inhabitants of Aiola came to the local gym to watch the tallest representative of the city do acrobatic studies with the ball, literally jumping over their rivals.

Despite the amazing data and statistics, very few universities considered Andersen. The reason for this was the image of an uncontrollable player and disgusting academic results. More precisely, their absence. It was for this reason that Chris was rejected by representatives of the Houston College, whose coach was the legendary Clyde Drexler. The humiliating test result did not allow Andersen to become a student of one of the main "pilots" in the NBA. They remembered the white-headed slob only at Blinn College, and even then old connections helped: the basketball coach was the father of Chris's school mentor.

He only played one season in Texas, averaging 10.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 4.7 blocks. According to the latest indicator, Chris was one of the best in college basketball. Everyone thought that the future NBA star was playing for the college and the only thing to do was to show his best side at the screenings. Andersen failed. As a result, the undrafted basketball player spent his first professional season in the Chinese Jiangsu Dragons team, which offered the player a good contract and unlimited time on the court. “I didn't really want to stress so I accepted the challenge,” Andersen explained. He arrived in Beijing in early December 2000 and stayed at the hotel for four and a half months, during which he played for the team. The Chinese league turned out to be not so weak: they defended well against the American, using double custody. But he regularly scored his 17 points, 14 rebounds and 3 block shots. Andersen's most famous opponent was the young Yao Ming. The basketball player experienced the most difficulties in everyday life. For Chris, this was a real challenge. “Just imagine, I had only traveled outside of Texas twice before, and then China right away!”, the basketball player recalls.

Seeing another construct on Birdzilla's head, Denver coach Jef Bzdelik ordered Andersen to return to the locker room and wash off the gel. At this, Birdman only smiled charmingly

Then there was the D-League, which broke the career of more than one promising player. Here Andersen was seriously lucky for the first time in his life. After playing less than ten games for the New Mexico Slam and the Fargo-Moorhead Beas, Chris received an offer from Denver. The minimum one-year contract in the amount of 290 thousand per year was a godsend for Andersen. Two days later, he was sitting on the bench of his new team with messy hair. It was in the Nuggets that the striker's talent was revealed and sparkled with new colors. Andersen preferred to leave their colors on his body in the form of bizarre patterns of oriental themes. Some tattoos symbolize some event in the player's life, while others are just a change of mood. For the team, he became the most “disturbing” factor. He didn't come off the bench just to hustle under the basket and rest Denver's big boys. Andersen's goal was to bring a fresh stream into the game and, thanks to his activity, send the opponent to an easy knockdown. In those moments he wasn't fighting for rebounds he was just making all the rebounds with his property. He did not throw the ball, but furiously stuffed it into the ring through the palisades of the opponent's hands. Because of his total advantage over his opponent, he was presented as a player of the future. But before the second hand had time to describe more than ten full circles, Andersen began to change. It became slower, the jump became like that of an ordinary person. Followed by unjustified fouls, misses from under the ring and a logical replacement, out of the forces of Birdman. Such flashes helped Denver to revive the game, but it is impossible to become a key player by spending 14 minutes on the court.

However, Andersen was idolized by the fans. His “flying bird” gesture (arms folded over his head in the form of wings) was copied by hundreds of people in the stands. And what hairstyle the Denver forward will have in the next match was discussed a little less than the chances of winning. By the way, Andersen himself claims that the hairstyle in most cases expresses the state in which he is before the match. "You really can't be sure what this guy is going to do next minute," Marcus Camby said of his comrade. Funny stories associated with Chris Andersen, indeed, are enough for a small collection of jokes.

For example, one day on the way to Memphis he bought a pit bull puppy, which he named Red Sonya. He did not take into account that the dog simply could not withstand all the difficulties of moving, because they had only two stops to make to Denver. Fortunately for the Red Sonja, she was discovered by one of the Denver coaches on the team's bus on the way to the airport. Andersen never cared about what people thought of him. His defiant appearance and unusual clothes made him the very Bird that is always in sight. About his mink coat went half the jokes in the team, and the cowboy outfit with a hat was called nothing less than "legendary". He was hated by the entire coaching staff for waywardness and insubordination. One day, after seeing another design on Birdzilla's head, Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik ordered Andersen to return to the locker room and wash off the gel. At this, Birdman only smiled charmingly. He did not take part in the match.

Very often, his appearance attracted much more attention than all the events taking place on the site. So, once during a match against the Lakers, a bored Jack Nicholson noticed a shaggy Andersen on the bench doing wild things with a wet towel. The famous actor and director forgot about his favorite team, approached the player and, showing a thumbs up, whispered a few words in his ear. A conversation began between them. “I asked him for a role in one of the films,” Andersen later said. I want to star in the next part of "Batman".

Fall

He felt on top of the world and did not look around. Money flowed like a river, he did not care about his accounts. Meanwhile, the $290,000 paper slide was slowly but surely melting away. "Jaguar" for an ex-girlfriend, night parties, expensive limousines for friends - this is how Andersen relaxed after working days. At some stage, this was no longer enough: cocaine and other drugs went into business. The smoke from marijuana began to replace Andersen's oxygen. Fate continued to give him jokers: he managed to hide his addictions. The wayward basketball player even answered his mother's persuasion with only another scene of one actor, and then told her that he did not want to see her in the near future. Linda Hlubets returned to Aiola in a dilapidated house and one of the first promises of her son was a luxurious mansion for her mother

Birdzilla was lucky as hell: in the summer of 2005, New Orleans offered him a new $14 million contract. The image of "Man-Bird" has become a trademark. Andersen's blond squint sold well. With this contract, the Hornets managers wanted to attract an audience: very often the arena remained half empty. His time on the court increased by one and a half times. Birdman is the highest scoring player on the bench and first on the team in field goal percentage. Recognition came to the striker: his sweeping dunks received a quality mark. He has been taking part in the top throw competition for two years in a row. True, there was a small embarrassment with Andersen. The first time in 2004, he used eight attempts before making a successful shot. At the competition in 2005, Andersen needed a little less than 4 attempts to build up. Whether it was excitement or something else, even Andersen himself did not give an intelligible answer. In both contests, he did not make it to the final round.

Having completely lost his caution, Andersen continued to live one day at a time. Parties, girls, drugs after signing the contract, he multiplied all this by two and simply could not cope with this element. After another one-day romance, Andersen, trying to forget his recent girlfriend, obviously went too far with the dose. Another doping test revealed traces of a prohibited drug in the basketball player's blood. Two years in ban and branded as a pariah that was the league's punishment. One of the Denver Post journalists called Birdman "the most disgraced player since the foggy 80s." Chris passed this verdict stoically. He was informed of the league's decision in training. Half an hour later, the forward's locker was already empty. According to Andersen, he was not at all saddened. “It happened what had to happen,” the player later said. I don't regret anything. This disqualification may have saved my life and pointed me to the right path. I don't know where I would be today if not for this incident."0003

Atonement

Feeling the speed with which he is going down, Andersen began two years of work on the mistakes. A few weeks after the disqualification, he turned to a specialized clinic. Having seriously worked on the “list of friends”, Birdman got rid of the comrades who pulled him to the bottom in just a year and a half. Since August 2005, all his actions have been aimed at achieving a single goal to return to the NBA. Andersen begins to train hard. In Las Vegas, he works alongside coach Joe Abunassar alongside players such as Kevin Garnett, Jermaine O'Neal and Al Harrington. Having dropped a few kilograms, he became much more mobile. Chris has made significant progress in throws from a distance. The new element hook throw became his weapon in the fight against opponents who surpassed him in height. Andersen's views on life and entertainment also changed dramatically. “I'm still the same Birdman I've always been,” Andersen said in an interview. Only now I will never make such mistakes. I got smarter." Pausing, Andersen adds with a smirk, “And my 3-pointer just got a lot better!”

"It's even better than the firegeorgekarl.com project," said Nuggets mentor George Carl

After re-signing with the New Orleans, Andersen plays only five games for the Hornets, after which he enters the free agent market. Despite generous offers from other teams, Andersen opts for his first team. All Denver fans were overjoyed at the return of the prodigal son. In order to sign Andersen, a group of fans set up a charity website, bringbackthebirdman.com. All proceeds were sent to the main office of the club. “It's even better than the firegeorgekarl.com project,” said Nuggets mentor George Carl. For minimum wage, the team got Marcus Camby for the poor. Andersen's progress was simply amazing. His explosive activity, he now learned to distribute very competently for the entire match. Birdman became part of the most powerful front line on the entire West Coast. Although even before the start of the championship, many put a big medical cross on the prospects of the “big” Denver. The Undead Andersen, Nene, Martin have had a very consistent season and are now poised to rewrite the Nuggets' record. For the first time in 14 years, Denver has passed the first round of the playoffs, and each subsequent promotion on the grid will be a record for the team in the team's recent history.
