Welcome to the GDYBL Travel Program.

The following is an overview of our program.

  • The Central Mass Youth Basketball League (CMYBL) is a very competitive league requiring players not only to learn, but also to master the fundamental skills of basketball.  In addition, travel team players must learn how to execute offensive and defensive plays.

  • The goal is for each travel team to carry 9 – 10 players, depending on the individual situation for that grade level.  Not everyone that tries out will make the team.  Players that were on a travel team last year are not guaranteed a position on the team this year.  A committee assigned by the Executive Committee will select the team.

  • For the fourth grade teams, coaches will be selected after the tryouts.  The head and assistant coach will be announced along with the players for the team.

  • Selection of a travel team is not based exclusively on skill and athleticism.  Other factors include:  team play, court intelligence, and team makeup (for example, each team needs to have a mix of forwards, guards, and centers).

  • Families must live in Groton or Dunstable to play in the travel program.  Students who school choice into the Groton Dunstable Regional School District are allowed to play in the travel program.

  • Players are not allowed to “play up” a grade level, unless the Executive Committee decides to combine grades due to enrollment numbers.

  • Tryouts are closed to parents and other observers.

  • To properly evaluate all candidates, participation in both tryouts is strongly recommended.

  • If it is decided that there will be two teams per grade level, the Executive Committee will decide how the teams will be divided, either split equally or A and B teams.

  • Those trying out that do not make the team will be sent a skill evaluation form completed by the tryouts committee.  The form is intended to evaluate the current skill level and offer suggestions for helping the player further develop their basketball abilities.  We want to encourage all those that don’t make it to work on developing their skills and return next year.

  • Players can participate in both the GDYBL recreation league and the CMYBL travel program.  Although we encourage participation in both, it is not required.  This is the personal decision of each family.

  • Anyone that registered for the Recreation league and decides not to participate because of his or her involvement with Travel MUST notify the league by October 9th.  Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of the Recreation fee.

  • Travel team participation requires two practices per week.  (1) 1.5 hour practice during the week and (1) 2 hour Saturday afternoon practice.  There is one league game per week on Sunday afternoon.

  • Travel practices and games are mandatory.

  • Playing time is not necessarily equal for players on the travel teams.  The GDYBL playing time rules are as follows:  For grades 6, 7 and 8: everyone on the team must play a minimum of two minutes every half of every game, including all playoffs.  For grades 4 and 5:  everyone on the team must play a minimum of three minutes every half of every game, including all playoffs.  All travel coaches must adhere to this rule.

  • There is a fee of  $195.00 to participate in the travel program.  This is in addition to fees for the recreation league.  This fee must be paid by the start of the first practice.  Players who have not paid the participation fee will not be allowed to practice until the fee is paid.  Scholarships are available for families in need.  Please inquire by sending an email to  .

  • The CMYBL allows for collection of entry fees up to $3.00 for adults ($1.00 for children) per game for all league games and playoffs.  Parents and family members are expected to pay this fee at both home and away games.  The player registration fee does not cover the costs of running the program and this fee helps offset the cost of using the gyms.

  • The Travel program does one fundraiser per year.  It is a 3-on-3 tournament held the third weekend in March.  It is important that each family volunteer time to help with the tournament whether your child plays in the tournament or not.  One parent per team will be assigned the responsibility of registering all other families on that team for this responsibility.

  • Parents are expected to help with running the clock, collecting entry fees, and keeping the scorebook at games.

  • There is an additional cost for uniforms and any additional tournaments that aren not part of the CMYBL schedule.

  • Parents and players will be required to read, understand and sign a Parent/Player Code of Conduct form prior to the start of the season.  The Code of Conduct outlines the Travel Board’s expectation of all parents and team members.  If your child makes one of the travel teams, both parents/guardians and the player must sign this form or your child will not be allowed to participate.

  • All coaches will be required to read, understand and sign a Coaches Code of Conduct.
