How B.A.D. Do You Want 'It'?
How bad do you want it!? With basketball playoff season upon us, this question is thrown around by coaches, players, fans, and commentators alike. Everyone wants to know how badly a team wants it. But what does that even mean?
Relying on clichéd phrases like “How bad do you want it?” to try to motivate our teams, or ourselves for that matter, leaves them and us in a place of ambiguity of what exactly we are asking of them, and then a place of frustration when behavior is not manifested in the way we had conceptualized it. Part of our responsibility as a leader is to simplify and clarify. When we break down this vague question into four distinct parts, I think we as leaders and coaches position ourselves to leverage this question in a way that not only guides our team and us but also motivates.
Part I: “The It”How B.A.D. do you want it? First and foremost, we must clarify our ‘it’. For what exactly are we striving? For what exactly are we asking our team to dedicate their time, energy, tears, and passion to achieving? Once we establish the outcome goal that we are seeking to attain, then, we should hammer down even further: what are the specific steps – or specific ‘its’ along the way – that will lead us to our ultimate ‘it’.
As a former soccer player at the University of Notre Dame, our ultimate ‘it’ was to win a National Championship. Once that was clearly defined, we set to work understanding the critical academic, social responsibility, physical, technical, tactical, and mental steps (‘its’) that would ultimately facilitate that goal. Long-term outcome goals motivate us, but the day-to-day, moment-by-moment process goals direct us. Drawing a simple staircase with the ultimate ‘it’ at the top and the specific steps that need to be taken to achieve that goal along the way can serve as a great guide for you and your team.
Part II: “B – Believe”How B. A.D. do you want it? Do you believe in the depths of your being that you can achieve ‘it’? Belief is a critical factor that does not often get discussed. Discussing with our teams – or reminding ourselves – the reasons why they should believe they can achieve their ‘it’ embeds that belief deep within their hearts and minds so that when pressure comes and adversity strikes, it is not doubt that is stimulated but belief. Do you believe you can achieve it?
Part III: “A – All In”How B.A.D. do you want it? Are you all in on achieving your ‘it’? Right now, raise your arm as high as you can and hold it there…seriously, do it. Ok. Now…raise it a little more. That’s all in! That little extra stretch is what all in feels like. When we feel like we are giving everything – raising our arm as high as we can – can we give a little more? Leaders and teams that are all in always find a little more to give, and this is what people are looking for when asking just how bad you want it.
Part IV: “D – Do It”How B.A.D. do you want it? Are you willing to do the work necessary to achieve your ‘it’? Quite frankly, I don’t care what your ‘it’ is. As a mental performance consultant, I’m more interested in what people are willing to do to get what they say that want. Eric Thomas says in one of his (awesome) speeches, “Most people say they want to be successful, but they don’t want it bad. They just kinda want it.” And ultimately, if you want to be successful – if you want to be a champion – then you have to do the things that successful people do, the way successful people do them. Find out what the people who have achieved your ‘it’ have done to get it…and go to work!
Champions wholeheartedly believe in their potential to achieve their ‘it’. Champions have an all-in mentality that drives how they approach every element of their game. And ultimately, Champions are willing to do the hard work that it takes to be successful. As we watch basketball tournaments around the country throughout this month, be looking for just how B.A.D. teams want ‘it’.
So next time you get asked, “How bad do you want it?” just know that what people really want to know is:
- What’s your ‘it’?
- Do you believe you can achieve it?
- Are you all in?
- Are you willing to do what it takes to get it?

“Life is basketball, and basketball is life”: teenagers about the love of sports
Kuanysh “Kuka”, 13 years old
Basketball is the meaning of my life. I love this sport more than anything. I train nine times a week and have been doing it for about two and a half years. I first got acquainted with basketball at school, and then came to Maxim Akhmetovich in the Almaty team. At the beginning of the year, we had the championship of the Republic of Kazakhstan, where we took first place, and recently passed the second ChRK, where we won a silver medal. Literally three days ago there was also the national championship in 3x3, where our team won gold.
It's great to play basketball, because sport keeps the body in good shape and leads to spiritual development.
George "Georgie", 17 years old
Basketball is a part of my life. I have been doing it for a year now and I see myself in this sport in the future. As a child, after watching videos on YouTube, I became interested in basketball. Coincidentally, ForumHoops opened at that moment, and here I met a lot of people who inspired me.
Going in for sports is great, but it depends on what kind. If professional, then it is not always good for physical health due to injuries. Basically, of course, it is very useful both for the body and for the psychological development of a person. Sport contributes to the formation of personality.
Aibar, 17 years old
Basketball has become a part of my life. I started this sport three years ago. At the moment, I can’t do without it, I need to play at least once a week. Nobody inspired me, at school they often played physical education with the boys and I really liked it.
Initially, I trained at the SC "Kazakhstan", where I had a very good coach. She took us to different tournaments: once we even went to the Kazakhstan Championship in Taraz and it was very cool.
I have been involved in sports all my life. Playing sports gives you energy. Yes, of course, he takes it away, but the next day you wake up and there is so much motivation to conquer new heights and achieve your goal. Sports will always help and you need to do them.
Alikey "Key", 15 years old
Basketball is victory, feelings and people I play with; discipline and training. I have been doing it for a year, and my older brother inspired me.
I like basketball because of the speed, dynamism and contact.
I think that doing sports is good because a person becomes more disciplined. In addition to the health benefits, exercise is a great way to release negative emotions.
Alisher "Alish", 16 years old
Basketball is my hobby. My friend Kuanysh inspired me to do this particular sport. I dream of becoming a professional basketball player someday.
Danial, 16 years old
Basketball is life. When I fell in love with this sport and started playing, I realized that I was ready to train every day and enjoy this process.
I have been playing basketball for four years now. I started at CSKA and trained in Israel, and now I spend time at ForumHoops. I was initially inspired by the famous American basketball player James Harden, and after I began to observe other NBA players, I fell in love with basketball even more. Their games are just incredible.
Playing sports is important for health, and also, when you have a favorite sport, you are cool in your own way. It gives pleasure and at the same time makes you work hard to achieve your goal.
Aidar, 18 years old
Life is basketball, and basketball is life. Playing and training every day, I constantly learn something new. I have been playing basketball for seven years now. I was inspired by professional basketball player Dwyane Wade, who played for Miami.
Every guy dreams about the NBA, but I don't really want it, because there are more capable guys than me.
Exercising equals a healthy lifestyle: than drinking or smoking, it is better to do something more useful. This is much better.
Artem "Tyoma", 15 years old
Basketball for me is the most important thing in life. This is what I love to do for the past three years. I was inspired by my school, where I started playing basketball and immediately fell in love with this sport. I see myself as an NBA player in the future.
Going in for sports is good because it puts your body and mind in order.
Arsen "Ars", 16 years old
First of all, basketball is a team game for me. I am very attracted to this sport. I started playing basketball at the age of six, inspired by my brother. Then I didn't train at all for a while. Started again two months ago.
Bulat "Bula", 15 years old
Basketball is a team. He teaches teamwork. I've been playing basketball for four months now and I've been inspired and inspired by my friends.
Dinali "Dinchik", 16 years old
Basketball is a team for me. In this sport, I am attracted by the speed, the combinations and the sound of the net when you hit the ring perfectly. I have been playing basketball for three years. I was inspired by the game of my friend, this rigidity and speed of the game fascinated me. Now my dream is to become a professional basketball player. I really like Fiba 3x3, it is more accessible and faster, I really want to get there.
Sports are especially beneficial for teenagers as they help maintain physical health and lay the foundation for a healthy body in the future.

Basketball for children - what is useful, at what age to do it
Basketball is one of the most popular sports games. Basketball for children is considered one of the early sports, because kids can be enrolled in the first lessons from the age of 3. But the most important advantage of basketball is its accessibility.
Sections for children are available in schools and neighborhood clubs, and classes are often free. And if you are not ready to give the child to the section, just buy him a ring and a ball and hang it on your site and the kid will already be busy in sports, which means he will get the maximum benefit for development.
Benefits of basketball for children, what qualities it develops
Before sending a child to a sports club, parents should know how basketball is useful for children and what qualities it develops.
First of all, like any team sport, basketball develops social skills. Working in a team, children learn to help each other, care about common interests and work for the good of the team.
Moreover, this basketball is an excellent emotional release. It helps the guys throw out negative energy and get positive emotions. Along with this, character is tempered during classes, and the child learns to go towards the goal, sacrificing his own desires and needs.
Basketball also helps to get rid of complexes. This is especially true for tall girls who are noticeably taller than their peers. In a team where all players are taller than average, the girls no longer feel like a black sheep, but gain self-confidence and begin to be proud of their height.
The influence of playing basketball on the physical development of a child
The influence of playing basketball on the physical development of a child is also strong. First of all, the guys involved in this sport develop endurance, and all muscle groups are strengthened. Basketball practice - these are jumping, running, swinging arms, tilts and squats, which allow you to develop all muscle groups and strengthen the heart and blood vessels.
In addition to the general health benefits, basketball will also help prevent the development of certain diseases that result from an inactive lifestyle.
What's more, basketball develops:
- Overview of vision. Due to the fact that the player must constantly keep an eye on the ball and other players, the field of view is improved. Children learn to manage peripheral vision and train their eyes;
- Reaction speed. Often during a match, an athlete must make lightning-fast decisions on which the outcome of the game depends. This helps children learn to respond quickly to emergency situations;
- Mindfulness. Through intense play, attention and memory develop, which not only has a beneficial effect on the playground, but also in studies and everyday life.
Given these facts, the question of what basketball gives a child can be answered that classes will strengthen physical, mental and mental health. That is why basketball is often recommended to children suffering from reduced attention and weak immunity. But not all children can benefit from basketball, you can find out what kind of sport is suitable for a child here.
Does playing basketball make children grow
It is often said that basketball makes children grow, but is it really true? Recent studies have shown that yes, indeed, he can help the baby grow up, but is not able to grow a giant out of him.
The increase in height is due to the straightening of the spine, which is stretched during jumps. Also, a slight increase in growth contributes to the strengthening of the muscles of the back and legs.
But to say that basketball can significantly affect the growth of an athlete is wrong, there is no scientific justification for this.
The fact that in the sections all children are really tall is explained simply - short guys simply leave this sport, because they cannot compete with tall athletes, as a result they move on to other sports, for example, volleyball, where they need both tall and undersized athletes.
At what age can a child play basketball
For preschool children, basketball is available from 3 years of age. Often this game is played in physical education classes in kindergarten. Of course, such a crumb will not be taken to the section, but at this age the child can already be introduced to the ball and the net.
Professional basketball training for children starts at the age of 5-6 years. At this age, you can enroll in a section at the sports palace, both boys and girls are accepted. The first 4-5 years the guys work out together, and only at the age of 10 the coach forms the men's and women's teams.
Basketball for beginners is more about general physical training and familiarity with the ball. In the first years of training, the coach pays special attention to the development of endurance, so most of the training takes place in the fresh air.
In the gym, the guys learn different techniques and combinations, and also learn how to hit the basket. According to statistics, it is in their youth that children are more likely to encounter injuries in basketball. This is due to not yet developed coordination and lack of skills in programming movements.
That is why sports insurance for basketball at this age is a necessity, because it will reimburse the costs of treatment and provide the young athlete with high-quality rehabilitation, which will prevent the occurrence of fatigue injuries and chronic injuries in the future.
Age characteristics of children in basketball
Age characteristics of children in basketball are a fundamental factor in drawing up a schedule and training plan.
Consider how the load of basketball players changes with age:
- 3-5 years. At this age, kids still do not know how to memorize the rules of the game and listen to the coach. All classes are held in a playful way and are aimed at developing coordination of movements and mindfulness;
- 5-7 years old. During this period, special attention is paid to the physical development and increasing the flexibility of the child. The goal of the trainer is to maximize endurance and strengthen all muscle groups. Also at this stage, children begin to learn the rules of basketball and learn various tactical and dynamic techniques;
- 7-9 years old. This is the age at which real training starts. At the age of 8, children can already participate in competitions. Now all their work is aimed at the result of the whole team. During these years, the main task of the coach is to teach the guys to interact with each other;
- 10-12 years old. At this age, men's and women's teams are formed. Now the team is becoming a real family with common goals and objectives. Most often, it is at this age that the first victories occur;
- 12-14 years old. At this age, children learn to program their movements. This is a very important stage for every basketball player, because the final result of the maneuver depends on it. At this time, the main task of the coach is to hone the movements of each player to the ideal;
- 14-16 years old. This is the time to master tactical thinking. The brain of a teenager is already ready to solve tactical problems and make quick decisions. At this moment, the coach already sees which of the guys can become a real champion;
- 16-18 years old. This is the age when a teenager must show all the acquired skills. Strong players are formed into teams to participate in important competitions. At this time, the start in a sports career begins, because the guys already have sports categories and can participate in adult competitions.
If you want to grow a real champion out of a child, a section at a school or a sports palace is a good place to start. Later, by the age of 7, the basketball section for children should be focused specifically on professional activities. Such a section can be found in any city, because this sport is very popular. You can choose a section closer to home in our catalog of sports schools and sections.
