Japanese-occupied Korea, 1930s. A young man Kang San earns money by street trading. He sells homemade alcohol and cigarettes. In the evenings, Kang San runs around the city streets with a large bottle on his shoulders, offering his goods to everyone.

Kang San enters an establishment where illegal street basketball matches are held, which are more like fights without rules. Excited by the cruel spectacle, the crowd of spectators recklessly makes bets. A cunning bookmaker (Gong Yoon Bae) raises money, fueling the general hype. In the midst of a match, the bookmaker's assistant (Su Dong) starts yelling: Police! Let's go! Whistles are blown, the police rush into the institution. Spectators flee in panic. Yun Be tries to hide, falls. Kang San drops his bottle, tries to help the bookie. He, along with his henchmen, runs away.

Kang San visits his aunt (Bam Shil Dak) who makes alcohol to sell. Seeing the broken bottle, she scolds Kang San: he again daydreams about his games and rushed like mad! Brat! Aunt refuses to pay her nephew for work. Kang San's cousin (Mi Sook) stands up for him: he gets a penny anyway, and you feel sorry for that too. Aren't you ashamed, mom? Bam Shil Dak yells at his daughter: Oh, you parasitic! Mi Sook to Kang Sang: oppa, are you back? Mother is indignant: what kind of oppa is he to you? You're almost a year older than him. Bam Shil Dak gives Kang San a new bottle: don't come back without money, otherwise you will ruin me completely. He again goes to trade.

During the day, Kang San attends a high school that is ruled by Japanese militarism. The teacher humiliates students from poor Korean families, beats them, demands to pay tuition fees: you are all garbage, Korean thieves. Repeat: I am a thief! Kang San refuses to say those words. The teacher is furious: do not pay until tomorrow - I will inform the general government. A richly dressed lady enters the teacher's room, this is Lee Hong Gi's mother. She hands the teacher an envelope. At this time, three poor guys are forced to take a prone position.

At the school playground, Kang Sang practices throwing the ball into the basketball basket. He tells his friend Bok Cho: don't worry, our suffering will end tomorrow. Tomorrow they are recruiting a team, that's the only reason I haven't gotten out of here yet and put up with everything. I'll get into the team and play basketball as much as I want. I'll provide mom.

Kang San's mother, Zhim Nam, works as a servant in a wealthy Japanese home. While cleaning, she accidentally drops a vase. The hostess yells at the maid, insults her, demands to pay for the broken expensive vase. Zhim Nam cries, asks for forgiveness. The hostess forces her to pick up the pieces with her bare hands.

Zhim Nam takes the bag of shrapnel outside. Kang San is waiting for her outside the house. What are you doing here, son? Miss you. Kang San notices that his mother's hand is injured. Zhim Nam claims that she is fine, asks his son if he is hungry. Kang San asks his mother to take care of herself. Zhim Nam shoves money at him: buy yourself something tasty.

In the slums where the Korean poor live, a government order is being discussed. The site where their shacks are located is going to be cleared in order to build houses for the Japanese here. The poor are going to arrange a protest demonstration in front of the government building on this occasion. Kang San arrives. He is invited to take part in the demonstration. He says that he will not be able to join them, because tomorrow there will be a selection for the basketball team. The comrades cheer the guy up: you are great, you will succeed, we are with you.

High school students play basketball. They are being watched by a professional league sports scout. He sees how good Kang San is on the court. But the teacher tells the scout: the boy grew up without a father, he cannot be controlled. We also have more capable players. Especially that kid over there, Lee Hong Gi, he's a great candidate.

In the office of Modern Woman magazine, reporter Choi Shin Yong is working on another article. She writes that only a marriage made for love can be happy, so you need to choose your future husband yourself. Shin Young asks his maid and friend Go Bong Soon, who knits while sitting on the couch: what kind of men do you like? She claims that the main thing in a man is the ability to earn a lot of money in order to provide for his wife and children. Shin Yong disagrees with her, she says that any money and power fade before love. Shin Yong cites the characters of Greta Garbo and Robert Taylor as examples. Bong Soon laments: again you are talking about your “Lady of the Camellias”! Do you have all the articles about true love? And you yourself only saw her on the screen. Shin Yong returns to the article, lists the qualities that an ideal man, from her point of view, should have. The editor-in-chief reminds Shin Yong that it's time for her to go to the train station: today the basketball players are returning to the city. Shin Yong is assigned to interview the star of the Yong Hee University team, Min Chin Ho.

Bong Che assures Kang Sang that he will definitely be accepted into the basketball team because he was the best player in the school championship. Bong Soon says that Shin Young will have to get out of the car and run to the train station in time for the train to arrive. She assigns Shin Yong to look after the car and runs off.

Kang Sang visits his aunt. She comes out of the bedroom where Yun Be is. Shil Dak complains about his daughter: this rubbish Mi Sook made a scandal and ran away from home. Where? The station. She painted her face, dressed up, left her mother alone, the scoundrel, and fled. She ran to look at some Min Chi Ho. From Team Yong Hee? He's a basketball genius! Kang San says that he has urgent business and also runs away: I will quickly, I will be back soon. Yoon Be asks his mistress: who is this guy? Basketball fan Kang San. Maybe you can’t tell from him, but in basketball he is the best.

At the train station, an enthusiastic crowd greets the Yong Hee University basketball team. Fans are chanting: Ming Chi Ho! Suddenly there is a cry: Japanese henchman! The beggar girl throws clods of mud at the team captain (Takeshi) and Ming Chi Ho. The mess starts. Shin Yong tries to get through the crowd and stop the bully. She collides with Kang San, they both fall down. Kang San immediately falls in love with an elegantly dressed beautiful girl. But she apologizes to the guy, gets up and runs away.

Near the Buddhist temple, Choi Jae Guk (Shin Yong's father) approaches the chairman of the advisory board. He asks not to take away his furniture factory: that's all I have. The official claims that it's all about the Sino-Japanese war. To sponsor it, war bonds were issued, but they will soon become just pieces of paper. The treasury is empty, and those at the helm are angry. Mr. Choi begs to be put in his position. The adviser says that he is instructed to destroy the barefoot slums in order to build housing for the Japanese in their place. But the slum dwellers are a serious obstacle to the realization of these plans. If Choi deals with this headache, then his factory will remain with him. Start acting!

Choi and his secretary Kim drive up to the government building. There, the police disperse a demonstration of outraged slum dwellers.

Kang San witnesses a conversation between Yoon Be and a police officer. The bookmaker gives the peace officer a bribe. As the policeman leaves, Kang San accuses Yoon Be of cheating and demands payment for the broken bottle. For the leader of a group of crooks, his accomplices stand up - Su Dong and Yong Gu. But Yun Be, who recognized Kang San, agrees to pay for the bottle. He offers a guy who clearly needs money to work for him. Kang San states that he doesn't play basketball to become a cheater.

Kang Sang finds out that it's not him who is being selected for the basketball team, but Lee Hong Gi. But he can't do anything! The school coach consoles Kang Sang: I'm sorry, it happened. But with such skills, you will quickly get a new chance. Kang San in despair: when? I'm 24 and I'm just finishing school now. You know perfectly well how hard I tried to get into this team. Only the thought of my mother's happiness helped me to hold on.

Kang San tries to enter the local government building. But the guards won't let him through. Shin Yong enters the entrance. She is helpfully informed that the director and his secretary are at the morning check. Kang San recognizes the girl he fell in love with without even knowing her name. The guards invite Shin Yong to pass, bow to her. Kang San wonders: why did you miss her, but not me? So she's the director's daughter.

Mr. Choi urges his factory workers to work hard and not complain about difficulties. Shin Yong comes up to Secretary Kim: did you deprive me of my job, ordered the editor to fire me? He says: your father has other plans for you.

Kang San is waiting for the coach of the university team, asking him to give him another chance: I have never lost to anyone and will not lose, I will not let you down. The coach says: I already appreciated your talent, but let me give you one piece of advice. Stop playing. You were born in the wrong family, this sport is not suitable for the poor.

Shin Yong tells her father that she likes being a reporter and being helpful to people. A modern woman should benefit society. Jae Guk does not argue with his daughter, but he is more interested in Shin Young moving in circles where there are people from wealthy families. When the girl leaves, Mr. Choi discusses with Secretary Kim who the daughter can successfully marry. Then the secretary says: Councilor Myung left you a message - a date has been set for a meeting with the Resident General.

In the evening, Kang San comes home to the slums. Municipal employees carry meager possessions out of their shack with their mother to pay off their tuition debt. Kang San declares that he won't go to school anymore. Employees say that the debt should be repaid in any case, and also interest should be paid for late payment. Zhim Nam is trying to reason with his son: if you leave school, then how will you earn a living later?

Jim Nam comes to school. She brought the teacher food that she had cooked herself. Kang San is called into the staff room. The teacher offers the guy to eat, he says that he is not hungry. The teacher throws away the dishes prepared by Jim Nam, breaks into an angry tirade about how sick he is of Korean food, how much he hates Koreans. Insulted, Kang San lashes out at the teacher. He pulls out a katana from the scabbard, threatens the impudent guy. Kang Sana covers his mother with his body. Zhim Nam begs for forgiveness and mercy. Kang San yells insults at the teacher, but gets slapped by his mother and falls silent.

Jim Nam and Kang San are walking across a snowy bridge. Zhim Nam is surprised: and when did my son manage to grow up and turn into an adult man? But I couldn't give you anything, I'm sorry. Life is so short. Over time, neither pain nor hatred remains. Be patient, and then everything will pass. Kang San puts his mother on his back, carries her. He says: thank you for being my mom, but I can't live like you. I'll make them pay, make a lot of money, and be successful.

Kang San comes to Yun Be and says: if I agree to work for you, how much will you pay me?

Yun Be encourages viewers to bet on the duel between his most experienced player Oh Yong Gu and talented young basketball player Kang San. The game starts. Spectators go on a rampage, waving the money clutched in their hands. Yong Gu uses power moves, behaves extremely aggressively, but Kang San outperforms the enemy in technique. He manages to win.

Yun Be pays off Kang San for a successful game that brought him considerable profit. Kang San says: I did not think that money could be obtained so easily. Yun Be assures that there will be more to come. You have to forget about everything and work for me for the next five years. I will provide for you until the end of your days. Su Dong suggests: since we have a new one, let's celebrate this business, go to the girls. Tomorrow is Christmas, or whatever. Yoon Be: Exactly! We go to Khon Machi. Hey Kang San, have you been to Khon Machi?

On the main street, Kang San stares at the bright lights of lanterns, garlands, shop windows, smartly dressed people. Soo Dong and Yeon Gu try to pick up girls. Kang San looks in the window of the Tejiyo department store where the Christmas sale is taking place. He dreams of buying his mother an elegant suit.

A secular reception is taking place in the lobby of the fashionable Bando Hotel. Friends ask Shin Yong if she has a boyfriend. She says she came here on business. She needs to interview basketball player Min Chi Ho.

Kang San confesses to Yoon Be that he is tired of living in poverty. Yun Be says: you are now part of the family, we will live together, I will help you earn money.

On the street, Takeshi, dressed in a tuxedo, tries to paw at the geishas standing at the entrance to an entertainment establishment, but slips and falls. Kang San helps him up. Takeshi insults a poorly dressed guy. Kang San grabs Takeshi by the breasts. He yells: police, I was attacked by a Korean geek! Friends pull Kang San aside, but he breaks out and runs after Takeshi.

Takeshi enters the Bando Hotel. Kang San is not allowed there. Yun Be sees a group of policemen passing by, smiles slyly.

At the Christmas party, Takeshi brags about his basketball skills to a girl. But she is interested: when will Ming Chi Ho come? Takeshi is angry, rude to the girl.

Yun Be managed to get police uniforms for his friends. Their entire company enters the Bando Hotel.

Takeshi tries to start a conversation with Shin Yong, who also asks about Min Chi Ho.

Party guests look with surprise at the four "policemen" who have appeared in the lobby. Shin Young looks at the handsome guy in uniform, Kang San also looks at the girl he's in love with. At that moment, a drunken Takeshi roughly grabs Shin Yong's hand: come on, repeat what you said. Do you think Min Chi Ho is the only basketball player on the Yong Hee University team? You publicly humiliated me! Oh you bitch! Takeshi swings at the girl. His hand is intercepted by Kang San: let the girl go! Takeshi: do you know who I am? I know you're the captain of Yong Hee's basketball team. Takeshi: who are you? I am a student at Imperial University, my name is Kang San. Kang San wrings Takeshi's hand. He shouts: I am the eldest son of the Ashido family, who was honored with the title of baron by the great emperor of Japan himself. You dare to attack an aristocrat? Yoon Be tells Kang San: let him go, he's not worth it. The hotel security staff enters the hall. The imposters flee. Shin Yong runs with Kang San.

Min Chi Ho participates in an advertising photo session (Japanese cosmetics, French perfumes, American soaps). The French advertiser admires: what a beautiful model. And my Japanese friends said that Koreans are small and lazy. Min Chi Ho says to the lady through his agent-translator: and you are brave and arrogant. I confess that I can't tell the Germans from the French, but it's wrong to use the Koreans as a model. I'm a basketball player and you never came to my games. You should do it. This game is played by handsome people like me. The lady is interested in the agent: what did he say? Chi Ho invited you to his game.

Chi Ho walks out into the street, a crowd of female fans running towards him screaming. The agent is trying to put the star in the car: you should be at the Christmas party, the team was invited just for you. Chi Ho says: I don't want to, I'm tired, I'm tired of being popular. Chi Ho pushes the female fans aside and runs away. He jumps into a car parked nearby, says to the girl behind the wheel: will you give me a lift home?

Mr. Choi comes to the official meeting, which is also taking place at the Bando Hotel. In addition to him, the meeting is attended by the president of a large company, the owners of a newspaper and a department store. Councilor Myung says that he will represent the governor today. The adviser distributes among the "pillars of the Korean economy" areas where they need to prepare sites for the construction of housing for the Japanese. At the end of the meeting, Choi stops the advisor on the stairs. They are talking.

Shin Yong helps the boyfriend who saved her escape. She sees her father, grabs Kang San's hand. Together they hide. The girl covers the boy's mouth with her hand. As the father and counselor leave, the fugitives rise from hiding. Shin Yong notices the abrasion on Kang San's hand, bandages it with his handkerchief. Kang San asks the girl what her name is. Shin Yong introduces himself, hands him his business card, and leaves.

Secretary Kim shows the boss of the Nam De Mun slum area: here is the village we need to demolish. It is small, but the people are very friendly. Many of them participated in protest demonstrations. Mr. Choi says: you need to drop all sentimentality, get rid of the village quietly, demolish everything at once.

In the morning, Kang Sang visits his aunt and says that he is ready to work. She goes to wake up Mi Sook. The girl does not want to get out of bed. Her mother finds the magazine "Modern Woman" with her, where they write about cosmetics, perfumes, and fashion. Shil Duck hawks his daughter, takes the magazine away, throws it away. The magazine picks up Kang San.

The editor tells Shin Yong that she should no longer work as a reporter: I was told that if you keep coming to the editorial office, I will get into trouble. Shin Yong refuses to leave his workplace: readers are waiting for my new articles.

Kang Sang studies materials written by Shin Young. They talk about how to win the heart of a lady. Yoon Be gives a guy in love his advice. Kang San wonders how much it will cost him to date a girl. Yun Be announces the amount. He is willing to lend money to Kang San. He asks: what can I do for you? Yoon Be assigns Kang San to collect debts from clients in the Nam Cheon area.

Yong Hee's basketball team is training with several reporters, including Shin Yong (accompanied by Bong Sook). Takeshi demands that the coach not call him a Korean, but a Japanese name. He notices a girl he harbors a grudge against after the Christmas party. Shin Young has her head in the clouds, she thinks of Kang San. Bong Sook tells Shin Young that she should concentrate on her work. Takeshi asks Chi Ho to give him a pass, he makes a throw, but Takeshi dodges the ball at the last moment. Shin Yong gets hit in the forehead by the ball, falls down. Bong Sook demands that the person responsible for the injury take Shin Young to the hospital. Shin Young says she's fine, but Bong Sook whispers to her, this is your chance to interview Min Chi Ho.

Kang San bypasses the Japanese who did not pay for the goods or services of the Koreans. Kang San is set on by the Hayashi gang, which operates in the area.

Hong Chi and Shin Yong leave the hospital. Hong Chi apologizes to the girl, wants to put her in a taxi. Shin Yong remembers that she has to interview the basketball player. She invites Hong Chi to have a cup of coffee with her.

Kang San sees Shin Yong laughing, talking animatedly with Hong Chi. Hayashi and his henchmen attack Kan San, he tries to escape, but the Japanese catch up with him, beat him and take away the money.

Hong Chi thinks Shin Yong is another fan. But she declares that she is doing her job as a reporter, and she does not like basketball and Hong Chi himself at all. Star in shock. Shin Yong gets into a taxi and leaves.

Is love and basketball a true story? Is the 2000 movie based on real life?

Love and Basketball, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, is a romantic drama. a sports drama film that perfectly shows how difficult it is to be in love with a basketball and a person at the same time. It tells the story of Quincy McCall (Omar Epps) and Monica Wright (Sanaa Lathan), two neighbors in the city of Angeles who first fall in love while trying to pursue their individual basketball careers.

Upon release, the 2000 film was praised for its exceptional accuracy and magnetism. He does a great job of reaching the largest audience with a touching story about two wealthy children, a boy and a girl, who grow up loving each other and also the game. So with such a trustworthy performance and a delicate, smart and balanced presentation of the theme, many fans have to wonder if the story of "Love and Basketball" is really rooted in reality. Well, in that case, we'll have your back!

No, Love and Basketball is not a real story. This is a semi-autobiographical account of director and screenwriter Gina Prince-Bythewood's early experiences. She is a former UCLA track and field athlete who grew up playing basketball in high school. "Love and basketball were at least half based on my life and my relationship with my parents," she said. Monterey Herald. “I was able to convey what I experienced into this (film). My upbringing really influenced everything, how I filmed it, how I wrote it, how I directed it."

Prince-Bythewood has long dreamed of working on a ballerina theme. After working for five years as a TV screenwriter, she quit. Feeling compelled to tell the story, she began writing a romantic drama centered around the friendship, rivalry, and tumultuous romance between two young residents of Baldwin Hills. However, the director had a very different experience when she submitted the script to other studios and production companies.

Recalling his experience in an interview with ESPN, Prince-Bythewood said: “Every day my agent would say, 'Another one has turned it down. The studios gave feedback that the film is "too bland", that we needed [scenes] where the character is chasing her husband with a knife." Eventually, her script reached the senior management of the Sundance Institute, who invited her to the directing lab. Sam Kitt, head of Spike Lee's production business at the time, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, was completely blown away by her work, which ended up in the hands of New Line Cinema.

With New Line Cinema, Prince-Bythewood is finally able to explore the lives of her characters, Monica Wright and Quincy McCall, the way she chose. The director also did not particularly take "lousy" people in films about sports. Speaking about her preferences in the cast, Gina Prince-Bythewood said: “If I was going to make a film about basketball, I would do it right.
