How does a basketball tournament work

What is The Basketball Tournament and who plays in it?

If you didn’t know ‘The Basketball Tournament’ has returned and this year’s edition promises to be better than ever. With that said, here’s the low-down on what you need to know.

What is ‘The Basketball Tournament?’

Made up of 64 teams and starting on July 16th, The Basketball Tournament will be in its ninth-annual edition in 2022. A high-stakes tournament in which teams face single-elimination, fans will get the opportunity to watch games across the country as teams battle it out for a grand prize of $1 million. As for who the teams are, how they qualify and what exactly the tournament’s format is, just keep on reading as we break-down all the necessary details for you.

The co-founder of TBT (The Basketball Tournament) says the past week in Albuquerque was a huge success and he sees 'extraordinarily high' potential for the event's growth in the Pit. https://t.co/51VnKyrjRH pic. twitter.com/DC9ZCfX5iL

How does The Basketball Tournament work?

To be clear, The Basketball Tournament is a March Madness-style bracket with 64 teams going at it in a single-elimination tournament. Teams are divided into eight different regions, with the winner of each region advancing to a final round which takes place in Dayton, Ohio. You can think of it as the equivalent of the ‘Elite Eight’ of the aforementioned March Madness. In this year’s tournament, the regions are Omaha, Rucker Park, Xavier, New Mexico, Wichita, Syracuse, West Virginia and Dayton. A winner-take-all tournament, only the championship team receives the $1 million payout, with the winnings being divided up between the roster or occasionally donated to charity.

How do teams qualify for The Basketball Tournament and who plays in it?

One of the things that makes The Basketball Tournament so special, is the fact that it’s an “open” tournament. That’s right, if you and your friends think you’re good enough, then all you’ve got to do is come up with $1,000 between you and you can officially register a roster. Rosters have a minimum of seven players and a maximum of 12, not to mention a mandatory obligation to have a general manager. Interestingly, coaches are optional and teams can have as many as they choose. Regarding who plays, The Basketball Tournament generally sees the likes of former NBA players, international professionals and rising stars from the college scene.

"When I found out I was going to have heart surgery, it was no joking matter. I was almost at a crossroads, and didn’t know if my career would be over, if I'd ever play basketball again."@cstock_15 continues comeback at @thetournament, by @rachelmlenzihttps://t.co/cFJHGG4IXe

‘The Elam Ending’ makes things more interesting

In an interesting spin on the game, The Basketball Tournament employs the use of a rather interesting quirk, ‘The Elam Ending.Indeed, rather than adhering to the traditional game clock, the tournament asks teams to play to a target score. Why, you may ask? Simply, because it does two things simultaneously. First of all, it assures that every game ends with a game-winning shot and secondly, it significantly decreases the tedious end-of-game following, that can often make games drag out to the end.

Basketball Tournament Seed

Basketball Seed

A seed in basketball is the number that corresponds to a team’s ranking. Seeds work a bit differently in the NCAA and in the NBA. However, in both leagues, you want to be the lowest seed possible (1), and there are multiple teams assigned each seed.

NBA Seeds

In the NBA, seeds are determined solely by a team’s record or win percentage. In each conference, the top 8 ranked teams, according to records, make the playoffs. The team with the best record earns the 1 seed, the next best team gets the 2 seed, and so on. Remember that there are two conferences, which means there are two number 1 seeds, two number 2 seeds, etc. In the NBA’s new playoff format, which was modified in 2021, seeds 1-6 in each conference automatically make the playoffs, while teams 7-10 participate in a play-in round to determine first-round matchups.

NBA Play-In Tournament

The NBA play-in tournament features the 7-10 ranked teams in both conferences battling for a playoff spot.  For each conference, the 7th ranked team will play the 8th ranked team, and the 9th ranked team will play the 10th ranked team. The winner of the game between the 7th and 8th ranked teams will automatically qualify for the playoffs as the conference’s 7 seed. The loser of this game will play the winner of the game between the 9th and 10th ranked teams. Whoever wins this game will become the 8 seed in the playoffs. Whoever loses the game between the 9th and 10th ranked teams in each conference will be eliminated from playoff contention.

NBA Playoff Matchups

Playoff matchups are determined by seeds. The top-seeded team plays the 8th seed, the 2nd seed plays the 7th seed, the 3rd seed plays the 6th seed, and the 4th seed plays the 5th seed. This rewards teams who perform well during the regular season.

Once the bracket is fixed at the beginning of the tournament, teams are not reseeded throughout the tournament. This means that even if a high-numbered seed makes it out of the first round, they will play the team who won in their section of the bracket, no matter the seed.

NCAA Seeds

In the NCAA, seeds work a bit differently. On Selection Sunday, teams are given seeds based on their season records, strength of schedule, and success in conference playoffs.

A team could receive a higher seed than their record suggests they deserve as a result of success in their conference tournament or beating a top team in the regular season. Seeding in the NCAA is based on many more factors than solely win percentage in the NBA.

Conference Tournament Playoff Seeding

At the end of the regular season, every conference in NCAA Division I basketball holds a postseason tournament. The winner of each of these tournaments receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Similar to the NBA, seeding for these tournaments is determined by regular-season record. However, only the team’s record during conference play will be taken into consideration, not the overall record. Thus, the team with the best conference record will receive the number 1 seed in the tournament.

NCAA Tournament Playoff Matchups

In the NCAA Tournament, teams are divided into four regions of 17 teams, including the teams which play in the First Four. The First Four is a single play-in round in which eight teams compete in four separate games for a bid into the Round of 64; two teams will play for a twelve seed, two teams will play for an 11 seed, and four teams will compete for two 16 seed spots. Once all First Four games are played, there are 16 teams in each region, seeded 1 through 16, for a total of 64 first round teams. This means there are four teams with each seed. The four number 1 seeds are considered the best teams in the nation.

Similar to both conference tournaments and the NBA playoff system, the first round features the lowest-seeded teams playing the highest-seeded teams. The 1-seed will play the 16-seed, the 2-seed will play the 15-seeds, and so on. The closest matchup in terms of ranking in the first round is played between the 8-seed and 9-seed in each region.

Only one number 1 seed has ever lost in the first round. In 2018, the 16-seeded UMBC beat the number 1-seeded University of Virginia. However, Virginia avenged themselves the next year when they won the entire tournament.

March Madness uses a fixed-bracket format, rather than reseeding. This means that matchups after the first round are not determined by seed. Rather, the entire bracket is set at the beginning of the tournament.

Since September 1, four European countries (Germany, Georgia, the Czech Republic, Italy) have been hosting the main basketball tournament of the Old World - EuroBasket 2022. Back in May, it became known that the Russian team would be excluded from the tournament for political reasons, having obtained a ticket on a sports basis.

Nevertheless, the organizers still could not avoid a loud scandal. Opponents attacked the Turkish national basketball player right in the locker room.

The Turks do not intend to endure such hospitality and threaten to withdraw from the tournament.

“This is contrary to the spirit of sport”

In the match of the 3rd round of EuroBasket, the Georgian team made a sensation - with a score of 88:83, Jvarosnebi beat the Turkish team, which was stronger on paper. However, the sporting success of the Georgian team was overshadowed by the outrageous behavior of its own players. In the fourth quarter, Georgians Duda Sanadze and Turks Furkan Korkmaz started a brawl, for which both earned removals from the site. The game was held in Tbilisi and local hot fans reacted sharply to the decision of the judges - they began to buzz and throw various objects at the site, which caused the match to be suspended for about 10 minutes.

However, after the game, it became known that the matter was not limited to the clash of players on the floor. The assistant coach of the Turkish national team, Hakan Demir, said that three players of the Georgian national team, among whom was the removed Sanadze, attacked the removed Korkmaz in the room under the stands. The coach also said that they helped the Georgian basketball players to attack his ward ... Tbilisi policemen, who were called upon to maintain order at the match.

- This is contrary to the spirit of the sport. We expected a more gentlemanly attitude, but, unfortunately, this did not happen. We came here to play basketball, not fight. We are very concerned about the weak security system that we have witnessed today. We will follow the issue as well,” Demir said.

In addition, the leaders of the Turkish team demanded that the organizers of EuroBasket provide minute-by-minute recordings from video surveillance cameras in the subtribune, threatening to withdraw from the tournament in case of refusal. Turkey also filed an official protest against the outcome of the match. According to representatives of the Turkish national team, when a foul was recorded against Sanadze and a fight began, 4:48 remained until the end of the regular time of the meeting, but after the resumption of the game, the counter already showed 4:26.

Potential Consequences

There is no doubt that the Georgian national team will face the most severe fines in case of confirmation of information about the unsportsmanlike behavior of its players. The most severe punishment possible is disqualification of the team and a large fine, however, with a high degree of probability, only the players who started a brawl will be punished.

Turkey, in turn, can take advantage of all the nuances of the FIBA regulations and disciplinary code, in addition to the fight, pressing on the mistake of the referees with the game time counter. With the most favorable development of events for the Turkish side, the tournament management may decide to replay the match or even punish the Georgian team with a technical defeat.

Camera recordings, which will reveal all the details of the scandalous episode, will have the main value. At the same time, FIBA, which will choose the measure of punishment for the Georgian team, will most likely face sanctions - the participation of police officers in a fight can deal a reputational blow to the organizers and raise questions from higher authorities.
