The episode begins with Barney recalling the events of the previous night to the rest of the gang, in which he is accused of being too rough during laser tag by the game's owner. He then reveals plans to break into the laser tag arena and throw toilet paper everywhere. He is shown arguing with the owner in a parody of a scene often used in crime shows. Ted brushes it off, informing Barney that he is too old for laser tag. Ted then reveals "The Murtaugh List", a reference to the Roger Murtaugh character from the Lethal Weapon series, whose signature phrase is "I'm too old for this shit". Throughout the episode the narrator Ted replaces the word "shit" with "stuff" as he retells the story to his children. Ted's use of the list is to keep a record of the things he believes he has become too old to do anymore. Barney accepts Ted's revealing of the list as a challenge, and makes a bet with him that he can perform every item on the list within the following 24 hours. If he cannot, he will spend three hours listening to Ted talk about architecture, an idea so horrible even the thought of it causes him to twitch involuntarily.

Meanwhile, Marshall has taken on the role of coaching Lily's kindergarten's basketball team. He is extremely aggressive in training the children, doing such things as forcing them to run and throwing basketballs at them when they don't conform to his standards. A flashback shows his father relentlessly training Marshall, yelling at him aggressively. Lily is shocked by this, as her usual training tactics involve playing a guitar and allowing the children to do whatever they like.

Barney continues to try to perform every action on the Murtaugh List, contracting an ear infection and spinal injuries in the process, from self-ear-piercing and sleeping on a futon, respectively. During a conversation with Robin, Ted reveals that he would prefer being older to being younger. Upon hearing this, Robin and Barney make Ted his own list of things he would do when he was older. Another bet is made between him and Barney to see who can complete their respective lists first, thus introducing the "gentleman's agreement".

Lily grows tired of Marshall's over competitive coaching and tells him off - fearing he will be father as he is a coach - forcing him to be less like his father and go easier on the children. During the game, they lose without scoring a single point, but Marshall realizes the value in playing for fun and makes good with Lily.

After being drugged at a rave, Barney is finally forced to accept the reality that he is growing older and gives Ted the victory. Having re-watched the complete Lethal Weapon series and Ted realizes that Murtaugh still did the things he claimed he was too old for, and decides that he has more to live for than waiting to grow older. He agrees to accompany Barney in covering the laser tag arena with toilet paper, despite winning the bet. Ted, Robin, and Barney are discovered by the laser tag arena owner, who pretends to be accepting of the situation before going to call the police and he walks away.

Continuity

  • Marshall and Lily have a telepathic conversation.
  • Future Ted censors Roger Murtaugh's catchphrase by saying "stuff" instead.
  • Marshall having a large head, previously mentioned in Miracles and Not a Father's Day, is brought up again, when a flashback reveals Marshall's father mocked him for it while putting him through a grueling basketball training.

Memorable Quotes

Lily: At tomorrow's game, if you're anything less than a teddy-bear stuffed with cotton-candy and rainbows, I will silent-treatment your ass into the ground. You will think the time I found your internet search history was a freakin' picnic.

Robin: A Gentleman's agreement!
Barney and Ted: Huzzah!

McCraken: Your way is totally stupid Stinson! Son you have been a pain in my ass but damn it if this ain't some of the finest TP work I've ever seen. You're reinstated effective immediately.
Barney: Really?!
McCraken: Hell, no! I'm calling the police! Grown-ass man with pink hair throwing toilet paper. You've got to be kidding me, I'm too old for this -
Future Ted: Stuff. He said stuff.
McCraken is the owner of the lazer tag club, and is scolding Barney the way the police chief on Lethal Weapon scolds Riggs and Murtaugh.

Notes and Trivia

Goofs and Errors

  • After Barney and Robin return from the rave, Ted says he found some Russian beer in the basement. The beer is Švyturys Ekstra Draught, a Lithuanian beer. It may be just a confusion, since Lithuania and Russia were part of the same country, USSR, until 1991.
  • When the game owner scolds Barney for the second time at laser tag, he was seen stepping on a kid. A few seconds later, after the camera went back to Barney, the kid was already gone.
    • The kid could have run away during that time.
  • When Ted is listing some examples from the Murtaugh list he says that one is doing an all-nighter however Barney sets himself 24 hours to complete the list. Barney then has to 'crash on a friends futon for the night' and it is shown that Barney woke up on the futon which suggested that he did not complete that part of the Murtaugh list.
    • However, in Aldrin Justice, when Barney first sleeps with Marshall's professor, he exclaims that he pulled an all-nighter.
  • After telling Lily the backstory attributing his aggressive coaching style to his father, Marshall says "I totally gotta call that guy", implying he hasn't spoken with him in a while. However, it's established later in the Season 6 episode Big Days that Marshall talks to his dad daily. However, this may be just a reminder to call him thay day.
  • Ted states that he watched Lethal Weapon 1 - 3 and half of 4 when he couldn't sleep at 8pm. Earlier in the episode we see one of the challenges is to be up at 4am. Lethal Weapon 1 - 3 and half of 4 is just under 7 hours. If he watched the movies at 8pm but got up at 4am, this would give him less than 1 hour of sleep, making it highly unlikely he could get up at 4am wide awake.
    • However, the task is to be up, not to get up, so he could have stayed awake instead of going to sleep. Alternatively, by drinking coffee or other stimulants, he may be wide awake at 4:30am, which is when Barney and Robin ring him.

Allusions and Outside References

  • The title is a reference to Roger Murtaugh, Danny Glover's character in the Lethal Weapon film series.
  • Barney yells "Barney Stinson" before entering the bathroom, a parody of the internet famous Leeroy Jenkins war cry.
  • Lily's pep talk to Marshall to not be strict on the kids is a reference to the scene of Jessep being interrogated by Kaffee, Wienberg and Galloway from A Few Good Men.
  • During the kindergarten basketball game, Ted mentions that Marshall's subsequent retelling of the events became more ridiculous each time. At first, the opposing team consisted of grown men, but Marshall's retelling grew to include a werewolf player. The flashback then includes several shots of the wolfman slam dunking the basketball, as an homage to Teen Wolf.
  • The laser tag manager gives Barney one last chance but warns him he will be playing Duck Hunt if he doesn't behave. Duck Hunt is a video game from Nintendo that uses a light gun.

Music

Other Notes

  • When Barney gets warned that he will be banned from laser tag if he goes on playing so aggressively, one can read on the whiteboard behind him that he holds all the records.
  • The reason they had a telepathic conversation in this episode is because Alyson Hannigan had laryngitis and could not talk.
  • Throughout the episode, Alyson Hannigan has something in front of her stomach to hide her pregnancy.[1]
  • Cobie Smulders is also pregnant during this episode. Her baby bump can be seen as well as she is also always covering her stomach like co-star Alyson Hannigan. One can see it even more clearly in the next episode, Mosbius Designs.

The Murtaugh List

The Murtaugh List was a list Ted created around the time he turned thirty. It was a list of things he felt he was too old to do, as a reminder to never attempt to do anything on the list. It's named after Roger Murtaugh, Danny Glover's character in the Lethal Weapon film series, due to Murtaugh's line "I'm too old for this shit". Barney and Ted make a deal that if Barney can do everything on the Murtaugh List in the next twenty-four hours, Ted has to TP the laser tag place with Barney. If he can't, Barney has to listen to Ted talk about Architecture for three hours. Below is a list of all the items on the Murtaugh List that are recited during the episode.

  • Pull an all nighter.
  • Eat an entire pizza in one sitting.
  • Hang posters on your wall without frames.
  • Get ear pierced.
  • Do laundry at Mom's house.
  • Crash on a friend's futon instead of getting a hotel room.
  • Put off going to the doctor.
  • Drinking shots with strangers.
  • Leave an annoying two-person message on your answering machine.
  • Help someone move out of a six-floor walk up in exchange for pizza and beer.
  • Dye your hair a funny color.
  • Go to a rave.
  • Beer bong.

Robin's List

In response to Ted's Murtaugh List, Robin creates her own list of things that Ted is too young to do. Ted and Barney agree that if Ted can't finish Robin's List before Barney can finish the Murtaugh List, Ted will TP the laser tag place with Barney, and buy the toilet paper. If Barney doesn't finish the Murtaugh List first, Barney has to listen to Ted talk about Architecture for six hours, and he can't do anything on the Murtaugh List ever again. Below is a list of all the items on Robin's List that are recited during the episode.

  • Colonoscopy.
  • Have sex with an old lady
  • Put on reading glasses.
  • Yell at neighborhood kids.
  • Wake up at 4 am.
  • Take forever to answer the phone.
  • Go to bed at 8 pm.
  • Eat dinner at 4 pm.

'How I Met Your Mother': gravestone in episode 1 may have foreshadowed mother's death

    Entertainment

How I Met Your Mother was a hugely popular TV show that ran from 2005 to 2014. It was about Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) looking for the woman who would eventually become his wife. As many fans may know, Ted eventually finds the love of his life, Tracy McConnell (Christine Milioti). However, she suddenly dies in the series finale.

Although Tracy's death was unexpected for viewers, it could have been foreshadowed several seasons earlier, with a headstone in one of the episodes.

does Julio Jones have a girlfriend?

    Mother's death shocked many fans

Ted and Tracy have two children, but Tracy passed away from an unknown illness when their children were young. Her death ultimately causes Ted to continue his relationship with his ex-girlfriend Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) again.

However, some of the actors apparently knew about Tracy's death years before. For example, the actors who played Ted's children, Lindsey Fonseca and David Henrie, had to film all of their scenes during the first few seasons in order not to age on screen. As a result, according to Bustle, Fonseca and Henry secretly filmed the revelation scenes in the presence of several crew members. They also signed non-disclosure agreements, which meant they both knew about the ending but had to keep it a secret for years.

Alyson Hannigan, who played Lily Aldrin, also told Huffpost that there were "whispers" on set about her mother's death. She shared, “I knew it was. I didn’t know who mom would be, but I knew that he was telling all these stories for the reason that she passed away, which was very sweet.”

The tombstone in one of the episodes could foreshadow Tracy's death.

RELATED: How I Met Your Mother: Why Fans Think Tracey Died of Coronavirus

Meanwhile, keen onlookers could also see clues about Tracy's death. In one episode in particular, there is a tombstone that could allude to this.

In the Season 7 episode "The Back Door", Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel) visits his father's grave on New Year's Day to continue their tail-following tradition. As Buzzfeed shares, the cemetery also has a tombstone that says "MOTHER" in large letters. It seems to be an indication of what the Mother of the Show is in store for.

There was other evidence pointing to Tracy's death.

RELATED: 'How I Met Your Mother': Robin-Ted's Important Scene Was Cut From Finale

Several other hints of Tracy's death were added throughout the season.

Big - Ted's favorite book, Love in the Time of Cholera Gabriel Garcia Marquez. He can be seen reading in several episodes and even reads it at Farhampton train station when he first meets Tracy. A book about two young lovers who later marry different people. However, when the woman's husband dies years later, the couple is reunited, possibly foreshadowing the situation between Ted, Tracy, and Robin.

In the scene where Ted and Tracy first meet, the song playing in the background also eerily predicts their future. This is the "Funeral" of a group of horses.

    8 things we will remember - Moscow 24, 04/01/2014

    April 01, 2014, 14:45

    Culture

Photo: facebook.com/HowIMetYourMotherCBS CBS aired the final episode of How I Met Your Mother.

Will we remember for years when and under what circumstances Ted finally stumbled upon the love of his life? Hardly. In the hearts of the viewers, the "Bro Code", interventions and the exclamation "legen [wait, wait] darn" will rather remain. M24.ru recalls "Mama" and those moments, jokes and themes that have migrated to the audience's "use".

How I Met Your Mother ran for nine years. This is a flashback story of a group of friends (Ted, Barney, Robin, Marshall and Lily) who fall in love, break up, look for a job, hang out in a bar, and, of course, dream about the future. Events unfold in our time, but the grown-up Ted tells about them to his children in 2030. As you might guess, an extensive and detailed narrative of youth is tied to the question of how Ted managed to meet his beloved wife.

    The olive theory

Ted came up with the olive theory: A couple is harmonious if one member loves olives and the other hates them. It is built on observations of Lily and Marshall, whose relationship is close to ideal. Lily likes olives, but Marshall doesn't eat them, so these guys are very good for each other.

    Shot from TV series

However, in fact, Marshall likes olives, so the theory - alas - is not consistent. But Ted doesn't know about it.

    Ted

A dreamy romantic looking for love. Despite the fact that he is often unlucky, he sincerely believes that happiness is somewhere nearby. We just have to wait a bit...

    Marshall

Marshall is a lawyer. His dream is to protect nature, but, alas, they pay little for this. She and Lily have been dating since college and are therefore each other's only ones.

    Lily

In her youth, Lily dreamed of becoming an artist, but eventually she went to work as a kindergarten teacher. However, towards the end of the series, her dreams begin to slowly come true: she goes to work for the benefit of art.

    "High five from above!"

Barney Stinson loves to high-five everyone. He does this for almost any reason, and the main feature of the branded "five" is that it always has a special name: it can be five from above (for joyful occasions), a dull five from below (if something sad happened), five out of pity, as well as various other "five".

    Photo: facebook.com/HowIMetYourMotherCBS

    - Reverse High Five Guys! Look, we high-five, then we get a little awkward, and then we high-five again.

    Barney

    "Legen [wait, wait] darling!"

Perhaps Stinson's trademark "It was legen [wait, wait] gift" is the best invention of the creators of the series. There is nothing more to add here.

    Photo: facebook.com/HowIMetYourMotherCBS

    - It will be legen [wait, and I hope you like the first part of this word, because the second will be…] darn!

    Barney

    Barney

Barney is a pickup truck guru, woman lover and costume fanatic. Even his pajamas are a thin silk suit with a tie.

It's usually the ladies who get attached to Barney, not the other way around, but he's also had several serious relationships. One of them is with Robin.

    Robin

Robin is a Canadian journalist and the daughter of a man who really wanted a son. In her youth, she was pop star and Canadian teen idol Robin Sparkles. She strenuously concealed this fact from her friends until the moment when the secret became clear, and a video of one of her performances fell into Barney's hands.

When Ted met Robin, mutual sympathy arose between them, but the guy spoiled everything: after the first date, he confessed his love to his new acquaintance. The story, of course, has just begun - throughout the series, Robin and Ted either meet, then part, then converge again. No less complicated relationship with Robin and Barney.

    Slap Argument

One day Barney lost to Marshall in a slap bet - he made the wrong guess about Robin's "dark" past, which she carefully tried to hide. Barney thought she was doing porn and Robin was really just a Canadian teen idol. The winner of the dispute got the right to hit the loser on the cheek five times, and at any - even the most unexpected - time.

    Photo: facebook.com/HowIMetYourMotherCBS

The topic of slapping was stretched out for more than one episode, or even ten. To hit Barney on the cheek, Marshall chose especially reverent and controversial moments: his performance on the theater stage or Thanksgiving, for example.

    - Slap bet! We used to do that when I was a kid... The one who turns out to be right slaps the other in the face as hard as he can.

    Marshall

    "Challenge accepted!"

Another typical Barney phrase is "Challenge accepted!". Barney always rises to the challenge: whether it's an offer to hang out like an 18 year old for days on end, meet a girl by talking like a little kid, or get a hottie's phone while wearing a girl's dress. In general, Barney can do anything.

    - You won't do that. She is almost 50 years old!

    - Is she good?

    - Well, yes, good.

    - Marshall, I've thought it over. Challenge accepted!

    Marshall and Barney

    Photo: facebook.com/HowIMetYourMotherCBS

By the way, the "Challenge accepted!" Borrowed from the series "Friends". True, in "Mom" she is slightly "finished off".

There's an episode of Friends where Chandler and Joe argue with Rachel and Monica that boys know girls better than girls know boys. In this episode, Ross loudly announces that "Challenge accepted!".

    Friendly interventions

As soon as one of the members of the company began to behave too strangely, wear crazy things or overdo it with some kind of hobby, the rest of the intervention forced him to stop. The weapon was a large banner with the inscription "Intervention", near which the "victim" was explained in detail what was wrong with her. An extremely useful thing for large and small companies, by the way.

    Still from TV series

Sometimes the interventions got too serious - for example, Lily, Marshall, Barney and Robin arranged an intervention for Ted when they decided that he should not marry his girlfriend Stella.

    Bro Code and Playbook

Bro Code and Playbook invented by Barney. A set of rules for the behavior of bros and a collection of scripts with which a costume lover "hooked chicks" can be obtained by everyone today - the creators of the series released both books on the wave of success of the idea.

    Book covers

    Bro Code

Bro Code: Article 26 Until a Bro has a couple of kids, he shouldn't be wearing a cell phone on his jeans belt clip.

Bro Code: Article 27. A Bro never takes his shirt off in front of his Bros, except at the beach and in the pool.

Bro Code: Article 150 It is not permissible for a Bro to sleep with an ex Bro. Violating this principle is worse than killing a Bro.

    Playbook

The Playbook contains detailed descriptions of such pick-up scenarios as "Orphan Girl" (you need to pretend to be an orphan and arouse pity in the "victim"), "I will serve in the Marine Corps" (the need for a second date is instantly cut off) , "European" (should speak with a strong accent) and various others.

    The sound of breaking glass

Everyone has habits that annoy others. But sometimes, even if you communicate with a person on a daily basis, some of his little minuses go unnoticed for you. In one of the episodes of "Mom" a very plausible effect is shown: when someone "disappoints" you in another person, it is as if you hear the sound of breaking glass, after which you can no longer perceive the actions of this very person in the old way. In other words, after the glass has broken, all you do is pay attention to that little flaw that you didn’t notice at all before.

In the episode about the sound of breaking glass, Ted tells Marshall that Lily eats too loudly, Lily opens Robin's eyes to the fact that Ted is always correcting everyone, Robin notices that Marshall is always singing about everything he does. It also turns out that Robin herself overuses the word "literally", and Barney likes to exclaim in a too high voice.
