How Long Is A College Basketball Game On TV?
With just two 20-minute halves each and a 15-minute break, the standard length of a college basketball game should be 55 minutes.
However, the total length of the match when broadcast on television is often much longer than that. Most NCAA matches last for 2 hours and 10 minutes.
With that total, we have 40 minutes for actual play, two 30-second timeouts for each team, and three overall timeouts. The total time is 48 minutes.
One exciting thing you should note is that college games are usually 8 minutes less long than an NBA game. Even so, the average real-time NCAA match duration is less than a few minutes. The number of timeouts and the frequency with which teams take the free throws during and after college basketball games are the main contributors to this problem.
Unlike NBA games, men’s college basketball games have no quarters. It means fouls will last for an inning and not much reset time. The more fouls a player commits, the longer the game lasts and increases the game’s length.
Each men’s college basketball team will have four timeouts in a basketball game. Three of them lasted 30 seconds, and only one timeout lasted 60 seconds.
They had to use a timeout in the first half, or they would have missed it. The second half stipulates that each team can stop the game only three times.
In addition to timeouts and halftime breaks, four sets of TV waiting times are scheduled for each round. Their name is stoppage and appears at 16, 12, 8, and 4 of each game. If there is no stoppage at one of these four milestones, it will be ignored.

How Long Will A Women’s College Basketball Game Last?
Unlike a men’s college basketball game, women’s matches usually last for 2 hours with four 10-minute quarters.
Women’s basketball games used to last as long as men’s. In 2015, new regulations changed the format of the game. The use of four quarters is entirely consistent with other major leagues. These matches also include a break between the 2nd and 3rd half.
During the game, each team is given about four timeouts, similar to the men’s game. Even so, the women’s groups have no limit on when they can use them.
The Longest NCAA Basketball Games Of All Time
In addition to the longest NBA game, some people are curious about the longest NCAA game in history. Let’s find out in this section.
Bradley Vs. Cincinnati
Bradley Vs. Cincinnati (1981)
The basketball match between Bradley and Cincinnati on December 21, 1981, was the longest NCAA match. After six innings, the two teams still kept the score even. It was only in the 7th extra time that Cincinnati gained the upper hand over Bradley.
This match lasts for about 4 hours, from 19:30 to 11:20. Interestingly, the score of this match was relatively low, 75-73.
Connecticut Vs. Syracuse (2009)
On March 12, 2009, Connecticut faced Syracuse in a match that lasted until sixth overtime in the quarterfinals of the Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Syracuse was the winning team with a score of 127-117. The match lasted a total of 3 hours and 46 minutes. You can watch the footage of this college game here.
How Long Is An NBA Game?
A typical NBA game usually lasts from 2 to 2.5 hours. This number is not fixed because many factors can directly affect the time of the match.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) rules each round of an NBA basketball game to be about 12 minutes. With four games, the total playing time will be up to 48 minutes. The extra time of these matches lasted 5 minutes.
There will be a 15-minute break time between the 2nd and 3rd rounds, but they are only theoretical. Some issues will cause a basketball game to last longer than expected, up to about 2 hours in actual play. Compared to FIFA games, these matches last longer.
How Long Will The FIBA Games Take Place?
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) stipulates that each basketball game will have four quarters. With a total playing time of 40 minutes, each basketball quarter will last 10 minutes. We can see that the duration of FIBA basketball games is slightly shorter than that of NBA games.
This tournament also sets the following rules on break time:
Each team is given 20 minutes to prepare before the start of the competition
There will be a short break between the first and second half, lasting 2 minutes.
In order for both teams to have time to change the pitch and move on to the next half, the break between the 2nd and 3rd half is 15 minutes.
The break between the 3rd and 4th quarters is 2 minutes.
Extra time will have a break of 2 minutes.
If both teams play four quarters but still don’t find a winner, they go into overtime periods. The team with the most points in the first extra-time wins.
In the opposite case, the two teams will continue to play in the following extra time.
When the FIBA alarm clock goes off to end the round, the halftime break will begin.
How Long Does A High School Basketball Game Last?
High school basketball game
According to NFHS regulations, high school basketball games will consist of four quarters. Each round will last 8 minutes, with a 10-minute break in between.
Usually, people don’t use shot clocks in high school games. However, there is still a rule that mercifully turns the game clock into a running clock if a team leads by a specified number of points in the second half. Only a few states apply this rule.
Each state has different regulations, so there will be other criteria for regulating the time and managing clocks.
A junior high basketball game lasts shorter at 1 hour 30 minutes. These matches also cover four quarters with 6 minutes each quarter. In some states, the game time for each quarter can be as long as 8 minutes.
The break is 10 minutes long, and there is usually no shot clock for junior high basketball games. If the allotted time runs out and the two teams still tie, there will be an extra time of 5 minutes.
How Long Does A Youth Basketball Game Last?
Youth basketball games will last for about an hour. These matches usually consist of 2 halves of 20 minutes each. Unlike other leagues, the youth basketball game uses a running clock. This type of clock will not stop except for halftime breaks and timeouts.
The interval between sets is about 10 minutes. Also, when a team calls for timeouts, the match time will be extended by 4 minutes. With the primary audience being children, we have to consider a period to settle down and hold their positions.
Youth basketball games usually do not have over time, so that the score can be a tie in some situations.
Final Thoughts
On average, how long is a basketball game? It will be challenging to give a general answer as the time of each match will vary based on the tournament rules. A playoff game also usually lasts longer than a regular-season one because of the longer promotional period.
A college basketball game lasts from 1.5 hours to more than 2 hours, depending on many factors. Knowing about the playing time will make it easier for the audience to observe and follow the game.

In this article, we will discuss the lengths of these games in more detail along with the reasons for what makes these games last as long as they do. Let’s discuss it level by level: How long do basketball games last?
Table of Contents
How long is an NBA basketball game?
In 2018, the average NBA game lasted 2 hours and 11 minutes. Obviously, the length of an individual game can be impacted by many things, such as pace of play, amount of fouls called, in-game reviews, timeouts, and possibly overtime. In general, expect the NBA game you attend to last 2-2.5 hours, with rare exceptions lasting closer to 3 hours.
NBA games consist of 4 quarters that are each 12 minutes long. There is a 2 minute break separating the 1st and 2nd quarters and the 3rd and 4th quarters. There is also a 15 minute break, known as halftime, between the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Each team is given 7 timeouts to use throughout the game, each of which last for 1 minute and 15 seconds (not all timeouts must be used).
The pace of play in the NBA is very good thanks in large part to the shot clock. NBA games have a 24-second shot clock, which means teams have to shoot the ball in 24 seconds or less on every possession. The shot clock makes sure teams keep the game flowing and one team doesn’t try to hold onto the ball for long periods of time, which makes game more fun to watch.
If you are planning on going to a game in person, you will need to allow for more time than just the length of the game. Parking is available at all stadiums, but you will need to plan on foot traffic when you get there, and allow time to pass through security before finding your seat.
Also, you may want to buy concessions, jerseys, or souvenirs that will also take time. Depending on the expected crowd, traffic to and from the game may also be heavy.
How long is a WNBA basketball game?
A WNBA game lasts approximately 2 hours. The game consists of 4 quarters that are 10 minutes each. There is also a 15-minute halftime break between the 2nd and 3rd quarters.
The WNBA games have a 24 second shot clock just like the NBA does. Each team is given 7 timeouts to use throughout the game.
In general, do not expect crowds to be as heavy at WNBA games in comparison to NBA games. This means you will not need to allow as much time for parking, getting through security, and finding your seat.
How long is a FIBA basketball game?
FIBA basketball games last approximately 2 hours. They consist of 4 quarters that are each 10 minutes long. For comparison, NBA quarters are 12 minutes in length, so these shorter quarters cause FIBA games to be a bit shorter in overall length than NBA games.
FIBA games have a halftime of 15 minutes between the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Each team is give 5 regular timeouts throughout the game which is one less than the NBA allows. The FIBA shot clock is 24 seconds.
How long is a men’s college basketball game?
Men’s college basketball games last on average slightly over 2 hours in length, but the overall game length can vary dramatically based on game flow, timeouts, and fouls.
Men’s college basketball has two halves that are 20 minutes each. The game also has a halftime between these two periods that is 15 minutes long.
It is important to note that although the college game is 8 game-minutes less than an NBA game, the real-time game length is only a couple minutes less on average than an NBA game. This is due to the number of timeouts and how often teams shoot free throws during and at the end of the college game.
In the NBA, team fouls reset at the end of each quarter. The college game (men’s) does not have quarters, and so team fouls last for an entire half. That means if a team gets in foul trouble early in a half, it last for an entire half instead of just a quarter (because they don’t have quarters). This means there can be a lot more foul shots, which slows the pace of play and increases the length of game, sometimes significantly.
Each men’s college team is given 4 timeouts per game. Three of the timeouts are 30 seconds and one timeout is 60 seconds. A team must use one of these timeouts in the first half or they lose it, as they are only allowed to carryover 3 timeouts into the second half.
On top of these team timeouts and halftime, there are also 4 scheduled TV timeouts per half. These TV timeouts are called once there is a stoppage of play after the 16, 12, 8, and 4 minute marks of each half. If there isn’t a stoppage of play during one of these 4 minute stretches, the timeout is skipped and there will be one less TV timeout during that half.
Men’s college basketball games have a 30 second shot clock (source). It used to be 35 seconds, but was reduced to get more game flow and more possessions in a game.
As mentioned above, when teams get in foul trouble, it lasts the entire rest of the half instead of the just the rest of a quarter since men’s college games do not have quarters. This has been a major complaint about men’s college basketball and a reason why the games last so long.
Also, it is quite common for the end of the games to take a long time to play out if the team that is behind is fouling the other team in an attempt to make a late-game comeback. When the game is on TV, these long drawn out end of game scenarios can make games carryover into other games and cause fans to miss portions of their team’s games.
It is also very common to have multiple in-game reviews late in a game when referees are allowed to go to the monitor to review certain calls to make sure the correct call was made. Although this protects the integrity of the game, it does slow down the length of game and can cause frustration for fans who feel the energy of the game drained during these in-game reviews.
How long is a women’s college basketball game?
Women’s college basketball game lasts approximately 2 hours in length. The game consists of 4 quarters that are 10 minutes long.
The women used to play halves that were 20 minutes each just like the men, but changed to the quarter format in 2015. This format aligns with every other major basketball league.
The game also has a halftime between the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Each team is given 4 timeouts they can use throughout the game. Just like the men’s game, one timeout is 60 seconds and the other 3 are 30 seconds long. Unlike the men, there is no restrictions on when they can use them.
There is one TV timeout under the 5 minute mark of each quarter. That can change though, when one team calls a timeout before the 5 minute mark in a quarter, it will count as the TV timeout for that quarter.
The shot clock is 30 seconds, just like the men’s college basketball game. Since the game is broken up into quarters, when teams get in the free throw bonus it only lasts for the rest of that quarter. This is a major reason why women’s college basketball games are on average shorter in length than men’s college basketball games.
How long is a high school basketball game?
High school varsity basketball games last approximately between 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours.High school junior varsity basketball games last about 1 hour and 30 minutes. High school game length can vary dramatically due to style of play, level of competition, and number of fouls called during a game.
High school varsity basketball games consist of 4 quarters that are 8 minutes long. In some states, the varsity games are 4 quarters that are 10 minutes long. In those states, the games will last about 20 minutes longer.
The junior varsity games are 4 quarters as well, but they are only 6 minutes long in most states. JV games are typically played on the same night at the same location as varsity games.
High school basketball games do not have a shot clock. Some states implement mercy rules that turn the game clock into a running clock if one team gets a certain number of points ahead in the second half. The rules are set by each state, so there are different criteria for each state and how they manage the clock.
In some states, all you need to be is ahead by 30 points or more and it turns into a running clock, while some states it is as high as 40 points. Some states still stop the clock during timeouts when the game is under the mercy rule, and some states never let the clock stop.
How long is a junior high basketball game?
A junior high basketball game lasts about an hour and 30 minutes. Junior high basketball games have 4 quarters that are typically 6 minutes long, although there are some states that last 8 minutes each.
These games also have a halftime that lasts 10 minutes. If games are tied at the end of regulation, they also play a 5 minute overtime period. Junior high basketball games do not have a shot clock.
There are also some states that have a mercy rule that is the same as the high school mercy rule for that state. As discussed in the high school section, once a team gets up by a certain amount of points the game clock may become a running clock and only stop between quarters or timeouts depending on the state rules.
How long is a youth basketball game?
A youth basketball game usually takes approximately an hour to play. This can obviously vary dramatically based on the rules of the youth league.
Many youth league games consist of 2 halves that are 20 minutes each in length. Unlike other levels of basketball, most youth leagues use a running clock, which means it never stops except for halftime and timeouts.
When leagues use a running clock, the length of game becomes very easy to predict. Running clocks make for structured game lengths, which means games start on time, and makes things much easier for parents to plan for. If your youth league does not use a running clock, that is when the length of the game can vary dramatically.
Most leagues have a halftime that lasts for 10 minutes. This makes for a total of 50 minutes of game time plus halftime (20+10+20). Each team is given 1 timeout per half and is usually 30 seconds, although it will likely last closer to a minute.
So if each team calls both of their timeouts that will raise the time to roughly 54 minutes. With kids, there will be a lost minute here or there as well, and that is where the the game will push close to an hour in length.
Youth games typically don’t have overtimes, so the games can end in a tie. You may want to check with a youth league official or the team coach to see if the teams keep score and what they do for ties. If they do keep score and they play overtime, games will obviously take longer. Not only that, the other games may not start on time.
How long is a basketball game on TV?
If you are planning to watch a game on TV, there will likely be pre and post-game show that will add to the time of the telecast. If you are interested in watching those, or if you are hosting a watch party and you expect that your guests will be interested, you will need to plan accordingly. These pre and post-game shows are more common during playoff games.
Most pre-game shows start 30 minutes before the tip. These shows will usually consist of analysts who break down the game and help you understand key statistics or matchups to watch out for during the game. The post-game shows are usually shorter, like around 10-15 minutes, and will consist of interviews with players and the pre-game crew breaking down what happened and why it happened.
If you are going to watch a playoff game, you will want to plan for more time than you do for a regular season game. The average playoff game lasts about 15-20 minutes longer than a regular season game does.
In general, playoff games consist of more free throws, more timeouts, more in-game substitutions, and more in-game reviews for critical plays. This means you can expect average playoff games to last approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Steps to improve NBA game flow
Unlike other sports, basketball is fine with the length of the games they have as it is still one of the shortest games for major sports entertainment. With that said, they have taken steps to keep the time down and improve the flow of the game, especially the last 2 minutes.
Here is an article from the NBA back before he 2017-2018 season where the commissioner, Adam Silver, highlights some changes they have made to improve game flow. They are also listed here:
Teams also have 7 timeouts that they can call, down from 9 in previous years.
All of these timeouts last 75 seconds, as there are no longer 2 minute or 20 second timeouts
Teams can use a maximum of 2 timeouts in the last 2 minutes of the game, if they have more than that they lose them.
Each quarter will have a mandatory two timeouts, one from each team, to keep teams from saving all their timeouts to the 4th quarter
If the game goes to overtime, each team will only get 2 timeouts instead of 3.
When shooting a free throw, the shooter has to stay within the three point line. This is to keep shooters from wandering around between or before free throw attempts.
Standardize the length of halftime to start immediately after the completion of the 2nd quarter.
These are not major changes to the game and shouldn’t have much effect on how long the game takes. But it should help game flow, especially in the last two minutes, which helps fan engagement.

How long is a basketball game (and why)?
Last updated: August 26, 2022 / author Sandeep Bhandari / Fact verified / 3 minutes
Exact answer: 48 minutes
When it comes to outdoor games, there are many games in which people participate or support their teams. And basketball is one of them. This guide contains more information about the different types of b-games and the time spent on each game.
What is basketball and its variations
Basketball is a team sport in which two opposing teams of mostly five players play on a rectangular court. The goal of a field goal is worth two points, except when it occurs behind the three-point line.
The time required to play basketball varies. The difference is caused by the varying degrees of basketball games. For example, basketball times for high school, college, NCAA, NBA, and professional players differ. In addition, each of the above levels uses extra time whenever there is a tie after the end of the game.
How much time does various games in basketball take
4 Type of game

NBA basketball game
48 minutes
Basketball match of the secondary school

Professional basketball games
48 minutes - 2 hours 15 minutes
1) basketball matches in college 9000
also play baseball. Unlike the four quarters used in other regular matches, high school games consist of two 20-minute parts.
The half time is 15 minutes, as in the National Basketball Association, and overtime is 5 minutes. Broadcasts of school games last approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes.
2) NCAA Basketball Game
The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the high school b-ball gathering. This game is considered to be excessively long.
Numerous breaks consume almost 30 minutes of play. In the event that the ball hits either end of the basket or the team in possession of the ball changes, shot checks come into effect and the ball is pocketed. This time is different.
According to the NCAA, the time to shoot is 35 seconds for men and 30 seconds for women.
3) NBA basketball game
An NBA game is 48 minutes long. The game is usually divided into four quarters of 12 minutes each. Whenever any of the playing teams have a tie, the time will surely increase.
In the case of b-ball, the bind gives extra time, and the game is played separately until a winner is determined. Extra time lasts 5 minutes.
4) School basketball
B-ball is one of the most popular games in high schools. School games are estimated to last 90 minutes. This is an absolute time including breath holds, clock stops and fouls that may occur.
Like the NBA, high schools use four quarters, although the quarters are shorter. Each quarter lasts 8 minutes, and there is a ten-minute break between the second and third quarters.
For example, extra time in high school is four minutes if the teams are tied.
5) Professional basketball game
This game depends on the affiliation that controls it. An NBA game is 48 minutes long, although FIBA games are 40 minutes long.
The total time required to play any particular professional game is more than 2 hours and 15 minutes. Time includes breaks in time such as breaks, fouls and breaks.
NBA games, however, have different breaks, not like the Olympics and FIBA games. There are four mandatory breaks in NBA games.
In addition, ball finals take longer than regular games; about 3 hours.
Why do these basketball games take so long
In basketball, a game can never end in a draw because there must be a champion. So depending on the type of game, from high school to professional level, there is extra time to determine the winner.

Basketball: official rules of the game in brief
Basketball is a team sport in which players throw the ball with their hands into the opponent's basket. In a duel, 2 teams of 5 field players compete, and the number of substitutions is not limited. The goal of the game is to score more points by throwing into someone else's ring than the opponent. To do this, teams are allowed to dribble and pass according to the official rules.
Today basketball is considered to be one of the most demanded and popular sports on the planet. It is included in the program of the Summer Olympic Games. In addition, world and European championships, various club rating tournaments, for example, the NBA and the Euroleague, are regularly held. Both men and women play professional basketball, but in separate categories (mixed teams are not allowed).
Basic Rules
The International Basketball Rules were adopted in 1932, but have been adjusted more than once. The final set of rules was approved in 2004. It includes all sorts of amendments regarding the nuances of holding national and international tournaments.
The starting line-up for a match must have 10 players on the court (5 from each side). Each team must be in its own half. During the game, the ball can only be touched by hands. Running with the ball is allowed in parallel with hitting it on the floor. It is forbidden to kick the projectile, cover it with the body, throw it into the basket with a fist. A gross violation is a run when a basketball player has taken more than one step with the ball in his hands without hitting it on the floor. In this case, accidentally touching the ball with the foot or back is not considered a violation (at the discretion of the referee).
The victory in the match is won by the team that, after the final beep, scored the most points. In case of a tie, additional time is assigned - 5-minute overtime. If, after the first overtime, the opponents could not determine the winner, a second overtime is assigned, and so on.
For different types of ball hits in the ring, different numbers of points are counted:
for a free throw - 1 point;
for a throw from close or medium distance - 2 points;
for a shot from outside the three-point line - 3 points.
A basketball game always starts with a jump ball in the center circle. Then the teams play for 4 quarters of 10 minutes each with breaks of 2 minutes. In the NBA, a quarter is 12 minutes long. The break in the middle of the match is equal to 15 minutes. After it, the opponents change baskets.
In addition, each team receives 2 time-outs for the first half of the game and 3 time-outs for the second. Their duration is 30 seconds. A time-out taken by one side extends to the other. Unused time-outs may not be carried over to the next half or extra period. In each overtime, the opponents have 1 time-out.
Official competitions may be held indoors or outdoors. The size of the field is 28 by 15 m. The height of the shield is 2.9 m, its dimensions are 1.8 by 1.05 m. The basket is a metal rim covered with a net with a hole in the bottom for the ball. The ring is attached at a distance of 15 cm from the lower edge of the shield and 3.05 m from the field level.
In the men's category, the circumference of the ball should be in the range from 74. 9 to 78 cm, and the mass - from 567 to 650 g. In the women's category, the circumference will be 72.4-73.7 cm, the mass - from 510 to 567 g.
Rule violations
The list of official violations of the rules in basketball includes:
Out. Standard position when the ball has gone out of the playing area.
Dribbling violation. It is fixed for the following set of actions: dribbling, stopping, covering the projectile with both hands and continuing to dribble.
Jogging. The ball carrier moves more than one step without hitting the ball to the floor, or more than two hits without subsequently throwing into the ring.
Jumping from a place with the ball in hand.
3-Second Rule. An attacking player is in a rectangular area under the opponent's hoop for more than 3 seconds while his team has possession of the ball in the attacking area.
5 second rule. During the throw-in, the player does not put the projectile into play for more than 5 seconds, or the player, while in possession of a “live” ball, does not pass and throw for more than 5 seconds.
8 second rule. The team in possession of the ball in the backcourt did not take it out of the frontcourt line within 8 seconds.
24th second rule. The team in possession of the ball did not make a single shot at the opponent's ring in 24 seconds. The counter is reset when the projectile touches the shackle of the ring. After this touch, the attacking team has the right to rebound and gain possession of an additional 14 seconds.
Ball return violation. The attacking team must bring the ball into the defensive zone, after which a new possession begins.
If a player of the attacking team has been infringed, they are entitled to:
continuation of the countdown from the moment of stop if the team had 14 or more seconds of possession;
a new 14 second possession if the team had less than 14 seconds of possession at the time of the violation;
new 24 second possession if the kick-off in the defensive zone will be made by the team in possession of the ball at the time of the infringement.
Types of fouls
A foul in basketball is a foul play violation. It is given by the referee for non-compliance with the rules of personal contact with the opponent or for unsportsmanlike behavior on the court. The player who committed such a violation receives a personal reprimand (foul).
The following types of fouls exist in official tournaments:
Personal foul. If the infringement is made against an opponent who is not in the throwing phase, then the offending team shall take the throw-in. In the event of a foul on a player who was in the shooting phase, the affected team will shoot as many free throws as the number of points taken from them by the foul. If the shot during the foul was scored, then the injured player receives an additional 1 free throw.
Mutual foul. This refers to a situation where players from different teams commit personal fouls at the same time. As a result, both offenders are punished with a personal foul, but there are no free throws.
Offensive foul. It is fixed by the referee for grabbing or interlacing the defender's arm, using an outstretched arm at the moment of dribbling in order to move the opponent to the desired distance from the ball, as well as when pushing the defender away from the teammate in possession of the ball in order to prevent him from taking the projectile.
Technical foul. Violation of the rules, not caused by contact with the opponent. It implies disrespect for the referee, coach, opponent, violations of a procedural nature, delay of the game. For such a foul, the opposing team receives 2 free throws.
Unsportsmanlike foul. Deliberate violation of the rules when the player did not even try to play the ball. If an unsportsmanlike foul was committed on a player in the shooting stage, then the affected team will attempt a number of free throws equal to the number of points lost. If the foul is committed on a player who is not in the throwing stage, then the injured player performs 2 throws. For 2 such fouls, the player is removed from the court until the end of the match with the possibility of replacement.
Disqualifying foul. A gross unsportsmanlike violation for which the player is immediately removed from the site. In this case, a foul can also be received by a spare game, the coach and any official of the team. An additional penalty will be the assignment of free throws to the basket of the offending side (similar to an unsportsmanlike foul).

in the event of one technical foul, whereby a substitute or an official present commits 2 technical fouls;

National Basketball League
NBA (NBA) is considered the main national tournament in the world. Represents the men's professional league in North America, which involves the best basketball clubs in the United States and Canada. The NBA is one of the TOP-4 professional sports leagues in North America (NHL, NFL, MLB) and is widely covered by hundreds of TV channels around the world.
The
League was formed in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America, but was later expanded and renamed the NBA. The League's headquarters is based in New York City at the Olympic Power Building. Since 2004, the tournament has included 30 teams, which are divided geographically into the Western and Eastern conferences. In turn, each conference consists of 3 divisions of 5 clubs. Teams play the regular season first, then top out in the playoff rounds:
Regular season.
The first stage of the NBA championship lasts 171 days. The season starts in early October. For 171 days, each team plays 82 matches, that is, approximately every other day. Such a density of games often leads to injuries to basketball players, but the organizers do not deviate from the usual format due to the financial side of the issue (television rights, advertising, etc. ).

During the regular season, each club plays 4 games against divisional opponents, 4 games against 6 teams in its own conference, 3 games against the remaining 4 clubs in its own conference, and 2 games against each team in the opposing conference. The season calendar is based on the results of the previous season and the wishes of the team management. At the same time, matches can be played even on Christmas holidays.
In February, the regular season goes on a short break for a stellar weekend. For several days, the League organizes various basketball-related competitions, and completes the festive program of events with the NBA All-Star Game.
Playoffs.
The elimination stage starts at the end of April. The playoffs feature the top 8 teams from each conference. At the same time, the first 4 places in the conference receive 3 division winners and the best team in terms of winning ratio in the regular season. The remaining 4 places for this conference go to the teams with the best difference of wins and losses.
A pair of teams determines the winner in a series of matches up to 4 wins. Theoretically, a confrontation series can include from 4 to 7 games. Home court advantage is given to the team with the highest win rate. Until the semi-finals, only opponents from their own conference can meet in one branch of the tournament grid. The semi-finals determine the winner of the conference, while the Grand Finals help determine the best NBA team entered for the season.

International team tournaments
The most significant tournaments among national basketball teams include:
World Championship.
This is the most rated and prestigious tournament for national teams, which is held under the auspices of FIBA. The World Cup is held every 4 years among men's teams. The debut draw of the championship took place in 1950 in Buenos Aires and brought together only 10 teams under its banner. The winner of that tournament was the team of Argentina, which managed to beat the powerful US team in a bitter struggle. From 19For 53 years, the Women's Basketball World Cup has been held every 4 years. The first world champions were Americans.
For the first time, the World Cup was conquered by Soviet male basketball players in 1967, and for women in 1959. Today, Russian teams regularly qualify for the main championship of the planet, but rarely compete for medals. Americans, Serbs, Spaniards, Greeks, Argentines are considered the flagships of world basketball.
European Championship.
Tournament for national teams of European countries. It is held every 2 years. The debut championship among men was played at 1935, among women - in 1938. The Russian national team is traditionally ranked among the favorites of the tournament, regularly making it to the decisive rounds of the playoffs.
Olympic Games.

It was the Americans who became the first Olympic champions in basketball, who are still considered the main favorites of each next Olympic Games. The USSR team took gold for the first time at 1972 year. The debut women's tournament at the Olympics was held in 1976. Today, professional basketball players are allowed to the Olympic championship.
Development history
The idea of creating basketball belongs to the American teacher of the Massachusetts College J. Naismith. In December 1891, he decided to diversify the traditional gymnastics classes and tied two peach baskets to the railing of the balcony of the sports hall. The students were divided into two teams, whose members had to throw the maximum number of balls into their basket.
Naismith's game was only remotely reminiscent of modern basketball, since there was no dribbling, and players could only throw a projectile to themselves, standing still, and throw it into the basket in any way. Nevertheless, the game became popular in the US and Canada. It was included in an expanded physical training program for students in schools and colleges. Gradually, the rules began to improve, dribbling, zoning of the site, shields appeared.
The formation of professional basketball took place at the beginning of the 20th century with the emergence of a number of serious basketball clubs. The main problem of the initial stage of the development of the discipline was the lack of a single organization that could control the activities of teams and leagues. The players could easily play for different teams, and the meetings themselves were held in sports halls that did not meet the standards.
In 1932, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) was formed in Geneva. This organization began to gradually unite national basketball associations and make demands for official tournaments. Thanks to FIBA, basketball has gained worldwide popularity.
