But athletic scholarships of all types are highly competitive, and students need to be prepared to work hard to get noticed by college recruiters.
Students hoping to win a basketball scholarship need to begin their campaign early in their high school career. No later than their sophomore year, students should be working with coaches to develop their game, honing the skills that will attract a college recruiter. With the guidance of their high school coaches, they should begin choosing the colleges or universities they most want to attend. It’s a long process, and students will have to petition colleges to get the attention of their recruiters and coaching teams. Only a very few players every year win a basketball scholarship, and diligence and hard work are as important as talent on the court.
Elite Basketball
College basketball is regulated by three national athletic associations, the NCAA, the NAIA and the NJCAA. These organizations set the rules governing all aspects of college basketball, with an eye toward protecting student-athletes at the collegiate level. They also closely regulate the number of basketball scholarships any given school can offer. These restrictions add to the competitive nature of athletic scholarships, and only the very best players will make it to college on a full or partial scholarship. Hundreds of thousands of high school athletes every year dream of winning a basketball scholarship for college, but only the very elite make the cut.
NCAA – Basketball
The National Collegiate Athletic Association, or NCAA, was founded more than a hundred years ago. The NCAA regulates every aspect of college athletics. It consists of three divisions, which determine the rules by which member colleges and universities can recruit players and award athletic scholarships. All NCAA member schools are bound by the regulations of their division, and are subject to severe penalties for any infringement of those rules.
NCAA Division I
341 member colleges and universities make up the NCAA Division I. These are the powerhouse schools when it comes to all collegiate sports, and only the best and the brightest athletes will win scholarships to these elite institutions. The NCAA closely regulates the number of scholarships that a Division I school can offer. Division I women’s basketball programs are limited to 13 full tuition scholarships, while the men’s programs are capped at 15 full ride scholarships. That means only 13 women and 15 men will receive Division I basketball scholarships in any given year.
NCAA Division I Schools
NCAA Division II
NCAA Division II is made up of smaller public universities and private colleges. There are 290 men’s programs, and 291 women’s programs, in Division II basketball. Each member college and university in Division II is restricted to 10 full ride scholarships for their men’s program, and 10 full ride scholarships for their women’s program. Unlike Division I schools, coaches at Division II schools may divide their allotted full tuition scholarships into partial tuition awards as a way of attracting more players to their campus. For example, a Division II coach may recruit 20 players for a school’s women’s basketball team, dividing the ten available scholarships between them.

NCAA Division III
NCAA Division III schools are typically smaller than those in Division I and Division II. They also tend to place a greater emphasis on academics than athletics. This doesn’t mean, however, that Division III schools aren’t home to impressive basketball programs. There approximately 395 Division III men’s basketball programs, and 425 women’s basketball programs across the country. According to NCAA regulations, Division III schools are restricted from offering any basketball scholarships as a recruiting enticement for their teams. However, Division III schools routinely offer general scholarships for academically talented students who also excel on the basketball court. In this way Division III schools can build successful basketball teams, while bringing academically talented students to their campus.

NAIA Basketball
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, or NAIA, is comprised of smaller colleges and universities throughout the country. While NAIA schools do not have the high profile of those in the NCAA, they do offer a fair number of scholarship opportunities for student-athletes who may be as interested in earning a degree as in playing basketball. NAIA schools allow talented high school basketball players to turn their skill on the court into a college education. Like the NCAA, the NAIA strictly regulates the number of basketball scholarships a member school can offer.
NAIA Division I
There are 113 men’s basketball programs, and 112 women’s basketball programs in Division I of the NAIA. Each school is allotted eleven full ride scholarships for both the men’s and women’s teams. Partial scholarships are common in Division I NAIA schools, as it allows the schools to entice more players to their campus. NAIA schools also often offer players with impressive academic histories general scholarships and grants, which do not count toward the college’s allotment of basketball scholarships.

NAIA Division II consists of 149 men’s basketball programs and 148 women’s basketball programs. Division II schools are allowed six full ride scholarships for both their men’s and women’s teams. Again, partial scholarships are common at NAIA Division II schools, as are general scholarships and grants for talented players who also excel in the classroom.

NJCAA Basketball
The National Junior College Athletics Association, or NJCAA, is the regulating body that sets the rules for athletics programs at community colleges and junior colleges throughout the country. The popularity of junior colleges has risen over the years, as they offer an intermediary step for students who may not be prepared to proceed directly to a four year college. While junior colleges often get overlooked when students think basketball, they actually offer an impressive number of scholarship opportunities for students who may not be headed to a four-year college or university.
NJCAA Division I
There are 221 NJCAA Division I schools, offering 216 men’s basketball programs and 179 womens basketball programs. Each member school is limited to 15 full tuition scholarship for both its men’s and women’s teams. Scholarships at NJCAA Division I schools are full tuition awards, including stipends for books, fees and housing.

NJCAA Division II
NJCAA Division II is comprised of 123 men’s basketball programs and 130 women’s basketball programs. Participating schools are limited to 15 scholarships for both their men’s and women’s teams. These scholarships may only cover tuition, and can not extend to books, fees or housing. Division II scholarships can not be divided into partial awards.

The NJCAA Division III is comprised of 98 participating schools. Each member school is home to both men’s and women’s basketball programs, but like the NCAA Division III schools they are restricted from offering any athletic scholarships. However, students with strong academic backgrounds, who excel at basketball as an extracurricular activity, may find that they are eligible for a general scholarship or grant that will help them pay for their junior college tuition.

High school basketball stars who want to turn their skills on the court into money for college will find that they have to work hard to get the attention of college recruiters. There are an extremely limited number of basketball scholarships available each year, and only the very elite players will be tapped for recruitment.
Unlike academic awards, applying for a basketball scholarship is not as easy as simply filling out an application and submitting high school transcripts.
Hopeful student-athletes will need to begin their scholarship quest early, working closely with their high school coaches and counselors to choose the schools with the most promising scholarship programs, and to notify coaches and recruiters of their intention to pursue a basketball scholarship.
They will also need to prepare play reels demonstrating their skills which can be submitted to college coaches for consideration. Then, recruiters will research the student’s athletic and academic history to decide if they are eligible for a scholarship. It is a long process, and students must be prepared to stay in it for the long haul.

Less than one percent of high school athletes will go on to play NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball—but we already knew the competition was tough. Even though the odds of landing a scholarship are slim, it isn’t impossible. There are several competitive opportunities, from NCAA Division 1 to JUCO programs, where athletic scholarships are available. Division 1 college coaches offer headcount scholarships, meaning each player gets a full ride. NCAA Division 2, NAIA and JUCO programs, on the other hand, award equivalency scholarships. Coaches at these levels have a pool of athletic aid and they can distribute it to as many athletes as they want, so student-athletes could get partial scholarships. When it comes to basketball scholarships, it’s important to understand the difference between a headcount scholarship and an equivalency scholarship. In NCAA Division 1, student-athletes receive headcount scholarships, which are full rides. In other words, coaches award exactly 13 full ride scholarships to 13 athletes, and they can’t distribute that money any other way. At the Division 2, NAIA and JUCO levels, college coaches offer equivalency scholarships. Coaches are given a pool of scholarship funds and they can distribute it to as many athletes as they want. Therefore, depending on the program, some athletes will receive partial scholarships at these levels.
How to get a basketball scholarship
Every coach has a specific set of criteria they look for when recruiting student-athletes. Here are the most important aspects you should keep in mind as you search for scholarships:
Compete at the highest level possible: To accurately assess a recruit’s ability to compete in college, coaches want to see them play against high-ranked recruits from across the country. That’s why AAU is so popular among top-tier programs—it provides recruits with a chance to play at the national level. However, this level of AAU is the most expensive as recruits are often required to travel to several tournaments. While club basketball can help, it isn’t a necessary requirement to securing a scholarship. Varsity high school teams can also offer great competitive opportunities.
Compete in the summer during live periods: Scheduling conflicts make it difficult for college coaches to watch recruits play in-person during the regular season. So, they turn to live periods. These stretches in the offseason allow coaches to hit the road and scout several players at once. Bottom line: playing in front of college coaches in the summer is essential.
Attend elite camps: In addition to tournaments, college coaches also evaluate recruits at elite camps. These events, which can be invitation only, attract top talent and college coaches from across the country. There’s one caveat—camps at a Division 1 school tend to invite Division 2 or 3 coaches to attend, as well, but more likely than not, no other Division 1 programs will be in attendance. Make sure to attend camps at schools that are at the top of the target list.
Excel academically. Grades and test scores matter to college coaches. First, for divisions that offer equivalency scholarships, academic aid can ease the burden on the coach to provide athletic aid. More importantly, it speaks to a recruit’s character. Coaches know that students who work hard in the classroom are responsible, independent and will have a smoother college transition than those who don’t.
Create a highlight film. The best way to secure an in-depth and in-person evaluation is by sending coaches highlight and game film. Highlight film acts as a first impression—it’s a quick way to show coaches a snapshot of the recruit’s skill set.
Be proactive. Despite what families may think, coaches don’t simply discover recruits. Unless they’re one of the very best players in the country, recruits need to do some work to get noticed by college coaches. This is especially important in basketball where student-athletes are still allowed to talk to coaches via phone when they’re the ones initiating the contact. Don’t sit around: research, email and call coaches.
Know your best college fit. Lastly, don’t forget to visit the college roster for every team on your target list. The last thing families want to do is waste their time emailing coaches at schools that aren’t a good fit. Here are a few things student-athletes should look at: the players who are in their position (are they seniors who are graduating?), athletic stats (how do they measure up?) and backgrounds (does the coach recruit from a particular region or tournament?)
What are the odds of getting a basketball scholarship?
In short: It isn’t easy, but it isn’t impossible either. From NCAA Division 1 to JUCO, there are 32,890 men’s basketball athletes across 2,009 programs. The odds of a high school basketball player making a Division 1 basketball roster is 105:1, and the odds of a high school basketball player making any college roster is 18:1.
Division 1 basketball is a headcount sport—so coaches have exactly 13 full-ride scholarships that they can award to 13 players. Division 2 is an equivalency sport, so coaches can award full scholarships or divide their funds and offer partial scholarships across athletes. If we break it down to these two NCAA divisions, it comes out to 10,773 athletes competing for 7,719 scholarships. From an NAIA perspective, we’re talking 4,616 athletes competing for 1,845 basketball scholarships. JUCO offers the most opportunity as these programs can award a maximum of 15 scholarships per team and the average team size is 15 players.
Can you play college basketball without a scholarship?
Yes, but it is very unlikely. Basketball players on NCAA Division 1 teams who aren’t on a scholarship are called walk-ons. Some Division 1 schools hold tryouts where they bring on one to two walk-ons. But these players typically never see any actual playing time. Plus, recruits could be competing against an athlete who already has an established relationship with the college coach—some coaches will recruit walk-ons for their team, known as a “preferred walk-on. ”
NCAA Division 2, NAIA programs and JUCO colleges are more willing to allow walk-ons to compete for roster spots—and even earn a scholarship. For example, a student-athlete could walk on to a Division 2 program their freshman year and then earn a scholarship the next year and year after as these coaches award partial scholarships and renew them on a yearly basis.

How to get a D1 basketball scholarship
The first thing you need to know about NCAA Division 1 scholarships is that coaches recruit early. And we mean early—in some cases middle school. So, if a student-athlete is looking to land a Division 1 scholarship, they need to be on a coach’s radar before their junior year. Then, obviously, they need to be good. These are the best collegiate basketball players across the country and coaches are extremely selective when offering athletic scholarships. Elite Division 1 athletes rank nationally, such as making the ESPN Top 150 list. Less than one percent of high school athletes go on to play Division 1 basketball.
Division 1 coaches typically find top recruits through AAU club teams as they roster top talent and compete nationally. But AAU ball is by no means the required path to competing in college outside of Division 1. Playing in tournaments over the summer is an important way to getting coach exposure. Another option is to attend an elite camp hosted by the college. In this case, families want to make sure they’re picking camps where the student-athlete is a good fit athletically and academically to maximize their chances of being evaluated. Remember that academics do matter to college coaches. The higher a recruit’s GPA and test scores, the more doors that will open for them.
Most importantly, student-athletes need to be proactive. They should create a highlight film, obtain game film and create an online profile showcasing their stats and academic information. Then—and we can’t reiterate this enough—they need to contact college coaches. Send them an introductory email, follow up when it’s relevant and let coaches know when they’ll be calling. Basketball is unique in that student-athletes and coaches can talk via phone when the recruit initiates the contact. So, coaches aren’t allowed to call recruits, but if the student-athlete puts the work in and reaches out to them by phone, coaches can talk to them. If student-athletes aren’t hearing back, they might be reaching out to programs that aren’t an athletic fit. This is when families can lean on their high school or club coach to help them build a list of realistic target schools.

It’s true that NCAA Division 3 schools can’t offer athletic scholarships. However, they do leverage other types of aid the recruit might qualify for, such as academic scholarships, merit-based aid and grants, to create a competitive scholarship package. Division 3 is mostly made up of small private schools, so they tend to have these kinds of funds readily available. In fact, 82 percent of all Division 3 athletes receive some form of aid. Student-athletes with high test scores and a strong GPA will benefit the most from Division 3 scholarships.

There are currently two basketball divisions within NAIA and they each award their own maximum number of scholarships. NAIA Division 1 offers 11 scholarships per team, while NAIA Division 2 offers six per team. However, the NAIA is set to combine these two divisions beginning with the 2020-21 school year, and at this time, each team can award up to eight scholarships. Furthermore, the NAIA will continue using the equivalency model where coaches receive athletic funds and decide how to distribute scholarships among athletes. Typically, to make the most of their recruiting efforts, coaches award multiple athletes on their team with partial scholarships. That does mean, however, that some student-athletes need to supplement with other types of aid, such as academic scholarships and need-based aid.

Junior college is not as cut and dry when it comes to men’s basketball scholarships. First, it depends on the division. There are three divisions within the NJCAA, and only Division 1 and 2 can offer athletic scholarships to basketball players. Even more, Division 1 is the only division that can offer a full ride. Division 2 is allowed to cover tuition, fees and books, but they can’t pay for housing. In addition to an athletic scholarship, both divisions will pay for an athlete’s transportation costs to and from the college by direct route once per year.
Basketball scholarship requirements
Every potential NCAA Division 1 and Division 2 college-athlete is required to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center and submit their transcripts and SAT/ACT test scores and answer questions pertaining to their amateur status. In order to secure a roster spot and athletic scholarship, student-athletes must meet the academic requirements and be cleared by the Eligibility Center.

How many full ride scholarships for basketball are there?
In NCAA Division 1 basketball, coaches can offer a maximum of 13 scholarships per team. These are called headcount scholarships, also known as full-ride scholarships. Universities often automatically consider their applicants for academic merit scholarships , but larger scholarships like Gates must be applied for separately. It may include a motivation letter and a research plan. Sometimes candidates need to go through an additional interview.
Large scholarships are calculated mainly for undergraduates. For bachelors, the size of merit-based scholarships rarely exceeds 3,625-6,041 USD.
Many universities have alumni scholarships . These are discounts for graduates who continue their studies at the master's program at the same university. If you, for example, graduate from the University of East Anglia, then studying for a master's degree there will cost half as much.
Scholarships for specific areas are often found - subject-specific scholarships . The University of Surrey gives a discount of up to 50% to MBA students. You need to apply as early as possible - so the chances will be higher.
For Subject-specific scholarships, good grades and background in the chosen specialty are important: have you studied it before, have you written articles, do you have work experience. It happens that candidates are selected by projects and portfolio.
Scholarships are also available for Foundation programs. Such is, for example, at Newcastle University. Its size is from 12,082 USD to 24,164 USD. Moreover, the first half of the scholarship is paid while studying at the preparatory program, and the second - after successful admission to the bachelor's degree. [1] . Most low income scholarships cover only part of the student's costs. The average payout is 1,208-3,625 USD/year, large amounts are rare. Such scholarships are given out so that the student can afford a trip to summer school or field research. To cover the training completely, they are not enough.
In addition to the financial situation, the commission usually takes into account academic achievements. Therefore, a high GPA and a good portfolio will still come in handy.

Application
The application includes a questionnaire, four essays and two references. The essay, as always, is the most important thing.

The third essay is about selected master's programs. Here you need to explain why these universities and these programs are suitable for achieving your goals. What is unique about these universities is laboratories, teachers, courses. You need to convince the commission that your choice is not accidental. To do this, show how the chosen field of study relates to your academic and professional experience.
The fourth essay is about your career plans, short and long term. They must be specific and justified. You can set a global goal, for example, to change the attitude of society towards environmental issues in your country. But you need to explain what specific steps you want to take for this and how the Chevening program will help you. Stages of the competition
The competition for Chevening takes place in several stages.

From March 1 to April 30, interviews are held at the British Embassy. The commission will ask questions about the goals of study, plans, choice of universities, work experience. In March-April, without waiting for the results of the interview, you need to apply to universities. This can be done earlier, depending on the deadlines on the university website.

Priority areas are mostly technical - for example, mathematics or physics: students who study in them can receive 5000 R, graduate students - 10 000 R. Students and graduate students of areas not included in the list of priorities receive 1440 R and 3600 R respectively.

Governor's scholarships

It consists of three divisions, which determine the rules by which member colleges and universities can recruit players and award athletic scholarships. All NCAA member schools are bound by the regulations of their division, and are subject to severe penalties for any infringement of those rules.
There are 290 men’s programs, and 291 women’s programs, in Division II basketball. Each member college and university in Division II is restricted to 10 full ride scholarships for their men’s program, and 10 full ride scholarships for their women’s program. Unlike Division I schools, coaches at Division II schools may divide their allotted full tuition scholarships into partial tuition awards as a way of attracting more players to their campus. For example, a Division II coach may recruit 20 players for a school’s women’s basketball team, dividing the ten available scholarships between them.
According to NCAA regulations, Division III schools are restricted from offering any basketball scholarships as a recruiting enticement for their teams. The popularity of junior colleges has risen over the years, as they offer an intermediary step for students who may not be prepared to proceed directly to a four year college. While junior colleges often get overlooked when students think basketball, they actually offer an impressive number of scholarship opportunities for students who may not be headed to a four-year college or university.
These scholarships may only cover tuition, and can not extend to books, fees or housing. Division II scholarships can not be divided into partial awards.

This is especially important in basketball where student-athletes are still allowed to talk to coaches via phone when they’re the ones initiating the contact. Don’t sit around: research, email and call coaches.

However, they do leverage other types of aid the recruit might qualify for, such as academic scholarships, merit-based aid and grants, to create a competitive scholarship package. Division 3 is mostly made up of small private schools, so they tend to have these kinds of funds readily available. In fact, 82 percent of all Division 3 athletes receive some form of aid. Student-athletes with high test scores and a strong GPA will benefit the most from Division 3 scholarships. 
NAIA Division 1 offers 11 scholarships per team, while NAIA Division 2 offers six per team. However, the NAIA is set to combine these two divisions beginning with the 2020-21 school year, and at this time, each team can award up to eight scholarships. Furthermore, the NAIA will continue using the equivalency model where coaches receive athletic funds and decide how to distribute scholarships among athletes. Typically, to make the most of their recruiting efforts, coaches award multiple athletes on their team with partial scholarships. That does mean, however, that some student-athletes need to supplement with other types of aid, such as academic scholarships and need-based aid.
First, it depends on the division. There are three divisions within the NJCAA, and only Division 1 and 2 can offer athletic scholarships to basketball players. Even more, Division 1 is the only division that can offer a full ride. Division 2 is allowed to cover tuition, fees and books, but they can’t pay for housing.
