The great state of New York has millions of diehard sports fans. But how many NBA teams are in New York? Just in case you're not from town or you're just getting started into the NBA world, we're going to address that doubt right away.
As some of you may already know by now, New York currently has two active NBA teams but, contrary to popular belief, those two franchises aren't the only teams to have played on The Empire State.
That's why today, we're going to put together the ultimate list of the NBA teams located in New York State. Those who still play, and even those who relocated and rebranded quite some time ago.

The New York Knicks are New York's most popular team, and one of the most popular teams in all major sports. They have almost 6 million fans despite not making it to the NBA Finals since 1999 and missing the playoffs over the past seasons.
Madison Square Garden is considered the mecca of basketball, the venue all superstars want to bring their A-Game to, and that's why the Knicks will always be a prime destination for the best players in the world.
Brooklyn Nets
Founded: 1967 Former Names: New Jersey Americans (1967-68), New York Nets (1968-1977), New Jersey Nets (1977-2012), Brooklyn Nets (2012-Present) Arena: Barclays Center Location: Brooklyn, New York Hall of Famers: 16 (10 players, 6 coaches) Championships: 2 ABA (1974, 1976), 0 NBA Fans: 2.7 million
Spending most of their history in New Jersey, the Nets have often been overlooked by those in Manhattan. Still, the team has a strong and growing fanbase and there's plenty of space in the city for both of them.
The Brooklyn Nets are a franchise on the rise. They've developed a winning culture and it's only a matter of time before they're among the strongest teams in the league, even if it hurts Knicks fans.
Former / relocated NBA teams in New York:
Rochester Royals (1945-57)
The Rochester Royals were actually founded in 1923 but weren't a truly professional team until the mid-'40s. They stood in Rochester, New York, for over a decade and were a somewhat popular franchise. They later moved to Cincinnati and went through countless rebrandings and relocations. They're now the Sacramento Kings.
Syracuse Nationals (1946-63)
Long before they became the Philadelphia 76ers, this team was actually called the Syracuse Nationals and played in upstate New York. They were a perennial contender and even won an NBA Championship in 1955 but the team eventually relocated to fill the void the Philadelphia Warriors left when they moved to San Francisco.
Buffalo Braves (1970-78)
The Buffalo Braves were founded in 1970 and competed in the league for 8 seasons before his owner swapped it with the Boston Celtics. His new owner took the team to San Diego and renamed it the San Diego Clippers. The franchise moved to Los Angeles in 1984 and has been known as the Los Angeles Clippers ever since.

NBA Basketball in New York is an invigorating experience.Basketball season runs from October to April. You can support the Brooklyn Nets in Brooklyn or the New York Knicks in Manhattan. The atmosphere at a game is awesome, even if you are not a fan of basketball, you won’t regret buying tickets. Games last between 2 and 2.5 hours depending on if overtime is necessary. With a drink in one hand and a hotdog in the other, a basketball game is a great way to feel like a real New Yorker!

New York Basketball Teams
New York is the proud home to two big NBA (National Basketball Association) teams, the New York Knicks (officially known as the New York Knickerbockers) being the most famous. Madison Square Garden in Manhattan is the Knicks’ stamping ground and alongside the twenty thousand ordinary spectators, you can regularly see world-famous stars sitting courtside to encourage their team.
If New York Knicks tickets are a little out of your price range, check the calendar for a Brooklyn Nets game. Barclays Center in Brooklyn is home to the Nets and tickets to see this team are often cheaper. You could even bump into avid Nets supporters Jay Z and Beyoncé.
The New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets are rivals, predominantly because they play in the same city. When they play each other it’s known as “Clash of the Boroughs”. The Knicks are my favourite team, and one of the reasons for this is where they play: at Madison Square Garden, situated in the heart of the city, each game is an extraordinary experience.
WNBA in New York
If you are visiting New York when the Knicks or Nets are out of season then you can visit a WNBA game. The Women’s National Basketball Association has one basketball team that plays in New York: New York Liberty. New York Liberty plays in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The WNBA season is from May until late September when the WNBA Playoffs are played.

New York Basketball Games
A basketball game consists of two opposing teams of five players. Each game commences with the singing of the national anthem, a remarkable experience. The game is split into four 12-minute quarters. The aim of the game is to get the ball through the metal hoop (basket) whilst obstructing the opposing team from doing the same. The players can dribble the ball over the whole court, once they are over the midline they are not allowed back with the ball. If a player stands still with the ball, he must pass it to another player or try to score a basket. If he scores from within the circle, the team get two points, from outside the circle, the score is worth three points and a free throw is good for one point. The team who ends the game with the most points wins. A draw is not a permitted outcome so in that case, there is overtime.
There is a short break between each quarter in which an abundance of entertainment is provided, expect to see dunking contests, kids playing basketball and performances from the Knicks City Dancers or the Brooklynettes (yes, that’s their real name).
New York Playoff Tickets
The basketball season runs from October to April. The playoffs are the final leg of the tournament and begin in April. The NBA finals between the top two teams are played in June. If one of the New York teams reaches the playoffs you can buy tickets online, these tickets are in high demand so expect them to be more expensive than normal games.
Eric’s Tip: Tickets for the Brooklyn Nets are often cheaper and the stadium in Brooklyn is easy to get to by subway. So if you really want to experience a New York Basketball game but don’t want to spend too much, buy tickets for a Nets game.

Since the Dutch colonists came to these lands, the most important events in the history of America have taken place in New York. The emergence of eclectic musical trends, the fiery riots of the inhabitants of the ghetto, the murders of religious and political leaders, the birth of the greatest actors, artists, athletes. New York is the world's most greedy city, with 8.1 million inhabitants, more than anywhere else in the United States. Most visited by tourists. With a diverse population, immigrants who come here in the hope of finding a new homeland and recreate small oases of Jamaica, Canada, Israel, China in the poorest neighborhoods. This city has many names: Babylon, Meat Grinder, Market, Big Apple. But those who have picked up an orange ball at least once in their lives will tell you that the real name of this city is not New York, but the Mecca of basketball.

It was Reed who decided the outcome of the seven-match confrontation with the Lakers when he entered the last game with a severe injury to the muscles of his right leg. The demoralized Lakers couldn't believe their eyes and spent most of the match wondering how Reid managed to get on the court with such an injury.
It took the Knicks three years to play in the Finals again, and once again the Lakers were the opponent. But this time the main instigator of New York was the inimitable Earl Monroe, nicknamed Pearl. Monroe was a real James Brown on the court, waddling around the parquet, he seemed to be dancing. It took this dude and his partners five matches of the final series to hang another championship banner under the arches of Madison Square Garden. After that, Holzman worked in the team for one more season, and then retired. After that, the Knicks only occasionally reminded of themselves.
The following bright personalities appeared in the Knicks in the late 80s, early and mid 90s. It was then that a basketball player came to the team, about whom they said: "Patrick Ewing is the Knicks, and the Knicks are Patrick Ewing." Entering the coaching bridge was Pat Riley, who lost to the Knicks twice in the Finals while still a Lakers player. After that, for the next decade, Riley would come up with new schemes, and Ewing would play with different, but consistently great partners.
