At the 2004 Athens Olympics, which is considered one of their worst performances ever, the USA men’s team lost three games - Puerto Rico 92, USA 73; Lithuania 94, USA 90; and Argentina 89, USA 81. Their 24-game Olympic winning streak since 1992 ended when they lost to Puerto Rico in the opening game. In the semi-final, they lost to Argentina 81-89. They had to be content with a bronze medal after they beat Lithuania 104-96.

He played at the Olympics in the following years - 2016, 2012, 2008, and 2004.
4. Why did the USA lose at the 2004 Olympics? Several prominent players declined invitations, in part due to security concerns over attending the first Olympic Games after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The roster was hastily assembled, and heavily flawed. They managed to secure the bronze with a victory over Lithuania in the third-place game, but the 2004 Olympics has widely been deemed a disaster in USA’s basketball history.

In the US, they have been trying to take away that gold for 50 years!

50 years ago, the Olympic Games took place in Munich, where the USSR men's basketball team sensationally won gold medals. In the final, Soviet athletes beat the USA - 51:50. But no matter how many years have passed since that day, overseas will never admit that they were defeated in that match. The controversial outcome of the decisive meeting still worries the Americans who participated in it. And yes, five decades later, they are still fighting for justice and demanding the return of the Games-19 gold to them.72.
Video of the day
The fateful meeting took place on September 9, 1972. During the match, the Soviet team, which reached the finals of the basketball tournament without any problems, was confidently ahead of the opponent - its advantage reached the mark of 10 points. But the fate of the gold medals was decided at the very end of the meeting, when the Americans still managed to reduce the gap in the score to a minimum.
A few seconds before the final siren, US national team defender Doug Collins poisoned himself on the penalty line. After the first throw, which Collins successfully implemented, the head coach of the USSR national team Vladimir Kondrashin requested a time-out. Everything is according to the rules, however, both the judges and the players completely ignored the mentor's request. At this time, Collins realized his second shot, and the player of the USSR national team Alzhan Zharmukhamedov even managed to put the ball into play. However, the meeting was immediately stopped.
The USSR national team tried to find out why the request of their coach was ignored. Assistant head coach Sergei Bashkin went to the referee's table with complaints, but Yuri Ozerov, the former coach of the team, took more drastic measures. He turned to FIBA Secretary General William Jones, who was present at the match. As a result, he personally asked the referees to give the Soviet team the requested time-out. Kondrashin's wards were given a coveted pause, after which they still failed to successfully attack the ring. The team was one step away from defeat - the US team led in the long run for the first time during the match.
And when Ivan Edeshko put the ball into play and gave a pass to Modestas Paulauskas, a siren suddenly sounded on the court. It is generally accepted that it rang out ahead of schedule - it was still too early to complete the meeting. The USSR national team had three seconds to attack. And although the Americans had already begun to celebrate the victory, Jones again intervened in the course of the meeting and insisted that Kondrashin's team be allowed to finish the game on time.
At the same time, the judges claimed that only one second, not three, allegedly remained on the stopwatch. But since the signal to end the meeting was still given too early, the match had to be resumed. The timer was unscrewed for three seconds, as Jones wanted. Edeshko got another chance to put the ball into play and gave a pass across the entire court to Alexander Belov, who was standing under the opponent's shield. He put the ball into the ring without any problems and got a historic victory for the Soviet team.
The Americans, of course, were not happy with what had happened. Immediately after the match, they filed a protest, which was urgently considered by the FIBA commission. However, the jurors did not decide in favor of the US team, and the requested replay was never scheduled. In protest, the Americans skipped the awards ceremony, refusing the silver medals. The team has not received the awards so far - they are still kept in Lausanne, in the office of the International Olympic Committee.
The other day the victory of the Soviet team turned 50 years old. And this, of course, gave rise to a whole wave of high-profile statements from American ex-basketball players who were directly involved in that meeting.
Thus, 70-year-old Tom McMillen still hopes that over time the IOC will give the Americans the gold medals of that Olympics:
”) officially returned the title of champion posthumously, then I still hope that previously unknown and important circumstances will be revealed that will allow us to return the gold. I hope this happened not after my death, but in the near future.
Here is what 72-year-old Ed Ratleff had to say about this:
“Soviet basketball players know that it was not they who actually won the final, but the USA. And we know it too. Just then, during the Cold War, it was important for them to defeat us. When they returned home, it did not matter to them how exactly they achieved this victory. They didn't care, they became kings in their own country.
In the US, if we came back with a gold medal, it would be business as usual. The next day, normal life begins.
Officials from the Olympic Committee said that in order to receive medals, everyone must accept the result. But I know I will never accept it. Kenny Davis, our captain, even wrote in his will that no one in his family would accept medals.
I say one thing to all people: “My mother taught me in childhood not to take what does not belong to me.” This silver medal does not belong to me, so I cannot take it."
And this is a quote from 71-year-old Doug Collins:
“We were a pain team. This is what we faced and what we felt should not have happened to us. The medal we worked so hard for was taken from us.”
In general, the position of the Americans is principled, and the rhetoric has not changed over the years. Year after year, the United States continues to chew on the events of that ill-fated ending. However, now there is a very suitable situation in order to once again complain about FIBA. At EuroBasket 2022, the playoffs of which are now taking place in Berlin, refereeing scandals arise one after another. And the level of referees appointed by the organization for the European Championship is, frankly, low. And against the backdrop of a general wave of criticism, anything can be pulled by the ears, even if the so-called judicial error occurred half a century ago.
In addition, the decision of the FIBA Commission on the final of the 1972 Games is often called politicized. According to one version, representatives of the countries of the socialist bloc allegedly voted for the award of victory to the USSR national team, of which there were a predominant number at the meeting. The same McMillen believes that William Jones was in "conspiracy" with the USSR. So now, against the background of the aggravated political situation in the world, the decision to suddenly give the victory to the Americans at the Games in Munich would hardly surprise anyone.
But for our basketball, the 50th anniversary of that gold is a significant date. These were the first medals of the highest value that the men's team managed to win at the Olympic Games. The names of the basketball players who took part in that championship have gone down in history forever.
