The UNC Tar Heels have enjoyed a ton of success in school history as one of the top basketball programs in the country.

Frank McGuire led the team to its first NCAA championship in 1957. Legendary coach Dean Smith eventually took over and established the program as a perpetual powerhouse in college basketball. The Tar Heels secured two national championships under Smith and have won the national championships three times under current coach Roy Williams.

UNC is no stranger to the Big Dance.

How many national championships has UNC won in basketball?

UNC is no stranger to the Final Four and no stranger to winning the national title.

Out of its 20 Final Four appearances, the Tar Heels have won the national title six times. UNC's first title came in 1957, after three overtimes against Kansas under head coach Frank McGuire.

Three of UNC's titles were won under head coach Roy Williams, most recently in 2017 against Gonzaga. North Carolina was playing in its second consecutive title game, after losing to Villanova at the buzzer the previous year, and it was the eighth title game to be played between two No. 1 seeds.

North Carolina: Top-tier men's basketball program

The Tar Heels played their first season in 1910, and UNC is considered to have one the most successful college basketball programs in the last 50 years. They boast an impressive list of former students who have made it big in the NBA.

UNC holds the record for most Final Four appearances (21), and are tied with Duke for second-highest number of NCAA Championship Game appearances at 11 apiece. UCLA and Kentucky are tied in first place with 12.

They are also the only school to have made at least one Final Four appearance for nine consecutive decades.

North Carolina's NCAA championships

North Carolina first won the NCAA championship in 1957, in a three-overtime 54-53 victory over Kansas.

It took them 25 years to repeat the feat, however, after narrowly beating Georgetown 63-62. After that, the gaps between championships became smaller. They won against the Michigan 77-71 in 1993; against Illinois 75-70 in 2005, and over Michigan State, 89-72, in 2009.

The Tar Heels last won the championship in 2017 against Gonzaga, 71-65.

North Carolina currently ranks third in number of national titles with six, behind UCLA which has 11, and Kentucky with eight.

If they win, the No. 8 Tar Heels will also tie the Villanova Wildcats for lowest overall seed to ever win March Madness.

Anastasia Marinina: BSE Secretary General: Belarusian basketball is developing despite ridiculous bans

Recently, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) banned Belarus and Russia from participating in international tournaments. In connection with such an extremely unfair decision, the leadership of the Belarusian Basketball Federation turned to FIBA. Was there any reaction to the open letter of the BSE from the side of world basketball bosses, what is the life of Belarusian basketball now and what are its prospects? These questions were answered by BelTA's secretary general - executive director of the Belarusian Basketball Federation Anastasia Marinina.

- Unfortunately, modern sport has turned into absolute politics, moving away from the postulate of the founder of the modern Olympic movement, Pierre de Coubertin, "Oh, sport! You are the world!" Some countries, and it should be noted, are by no means sports giants, realize their ambitions by eliminating competitors by dishonest methods. Such "victories" are incompatible with the Fair Play principle and comply with the "win at all costs" rule.

So it was with the suspension of our basketball teams. Far from the leading basketball powers addressed the international and European federations with a request for suspension - the presidents of the federations of Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Great Britain, Denmark and Italy put their signatures. They demanded to remove our teams from the qualifying competitions of the World Cup and the European Championship. Their letter said so: it is impossible to imagine that the governments of these countries will allow them to play matches against the teams of Belarus and Russia. That is, the usual blackmail took place, where it meant: either we or they. And the very fact that just a few minutes after the publication of the FIBA decision, the British federation released a post on social networks with joyful photos, that for the first time in history they reached the next round of World Cup qualification, looked rather dirty and ridiculous. But they occupied the last place in the group, they had practically no chance to go further. But, having eliminated the Belarusian team by political means, they achieved tremendous success for the first time in 72 years. Of course, this is much easier than winning a head-to-head matchup on the basketball court.

It is obvious that they wanted to remove us because they were afraid of losing to us. When our men's team defeats Turkey, is minimally inferior to Greece, then the UK has no choice but to apply political methods to eliminate rivals.

And you need to understand that it started long before February 2022. In 2016, when the European Olympic Committees asked Belarus to host the second European Games, at the EOC Assembly in Minsk, the Scandinavian countries strongly opposed such a decision, although they were in the minority. In November 2021, the Netherlands really didn’t want to play with our women’s team and they didn’t come up with any kind of quests for us. Until recently, we were not sure that their team would arrive in Minsk.

Of course, in the current situation, it is very disappointing not only for the men's national squad, which has been going to such a result for 7 years, but also for our youth women's teams, for the 3x3 basketball teams. This season, we simply had to have medals, because the squads are now stronger than ever. And now it’s rather strange to read the words of Coubertin, who was convinced that it was sport that was one of the tools for resolving international problems: “You establish good, kind, friendly relations between peoples. young people to respect each other. You are the source of noble, peaceful, friendly competition. You gather youth - our future, our hope - under your peaceful banners. O sport! You are the world!". But now no one pays attention to this, there is no more fair competition - athletes are removed on far-fetched grounds, the masses are being pushed to persecution on racial grounds. Sport has become an instrument of dirty politics. And the most interesting thing is that FIBA, due to the sanctions imposed by the European Union, cannot even return our fees for participating in tournaments from which we were suspended.

- Nevertheless, life goes on. What is the BSE doing now, what are the prospects for developing cooperation with Russian colleagues who find themselves in exactly the same unpleasant situation?

- Naturally, no one sits idly by, we continue to work. Moreover, the executive committee decided in the summer season to focus on working with the reserve of national teams and preparing 3x3 teams. Tournaments were held with the participation of the strongest Belarusian and Russian athletes in different age groups. The 3x3 teams went through training camps and got good competitive practice in Russia and Belarus. A decision has already been made to create a men's club, which will be entered into the Russian Championship and the United League 3x3. Now there is a discussion of the formation of the same women's team.

The coaching staffs of both senior teams looked over the entire available reserve over the summer and have already determined the areas of work. In autumn our youth teams will take part in international tournaments in Kazan and Kaluga. In December Minsk will host another tournament in memory of Vladimir Ryzhenkov. Of course, we will continue to search for talents within the framework of the FIBA Europe projects "Step into the Future" and "Her World, Its Rules", and the screening of players born in 2011-2012 will begin.

- Coaches, functionaries, athletes themselves are sure that the international isolation will end anyway and there is no time to waste - you need to train in order to come back fully armed . ..

- Basketball in our country is a game of fans who love their sport and will do everything to further develop it, and our athletes have every opportunity for self-realization. BSE Chairman Maxim Ryzhenkov stressed that we could be banned from participating in tournaments, but no one could forbid us to play basketball.

- Concerning the reserve - what is the life of the Belarusian children's and youth basketball, how many children go to sports schools, is the orange ball popular with boys and girls?

- Basketball in our country is now at the peak of popularity. Schools are faced with the fact that they simply cannot accept everyone who wants to, as there is a shortage of gyms, there are not enough coaches. Given the shortage of modern venues, I would like to say a huge thank you to the Presidential Sports Club: thanks to its "Sport for All" campaign, excellent locations for streetball practice appear throughout the country. Those who wish can realize their desire to play basketball and lead a healthy lifestyle. In the capital, the Palova site is always packed to capacity. In the National League 3x3, the number of participants increases with each stage. Thus, the recent stage of the tournament brought together 184 teams. In 2022, all the planned children's and youth competitions were held: the championship of Belarus, the Sports Contest of the Youth Sports School, the Olympic Youth Days, the Sports Contest of schoolchildren. At the end of May, the final stages of one of the most popular and numerous competitions, the Slodych Children and Youth Basketball League, ended. This league gave many a ticket to big-time sports. 1700 young basketball players from 21 localities of Belarus were represented by 61 youth squads and 44 teams of girls. in three (U-12, U-14 and U-16).In total, more than 6,000 children are involved in basketball in sections of our country.

- When does the next national championship start? Will there be any innovations in it?

- Already the 31st national championship will start on September 17th. Last season 11 men's and 8 women's club teams took part in the Belarusian Basketball Championship. To popularize basketball, the final play-off matches among women's and men's teams were held, respectively, in the sports complexes of the capital RGUOR and the Sports Palace, the sports complex "Olympian" in Mogilev. The capacity of these arenas allowed everyone to see medal battles. For the first time Belarusian viewers could see the final games of the women's championship and the entire final series of the men's championship on the TV channel "Belarus 5", for which many thanks to the management of the channel. All 310 matches of the national championships were broadcast on the Internet television "SportTV".

Every year the system of competitions is improved, changes and additions are made to the rules of their conduct. We plan that in the men's championship the number of teams will increase, and the participants will be divided into two groups based on the final table of the past season. This will make the championship more interesting for both spectators and players.
