How popular is basketball in france

The Popularity of Basketball in France

Basketball is a popular sport played almost all over the world. Although it was invented in the United States, many countries have also appreciated the sport and has grown in popularit. It is a solid proof how well basketball has spread from the place where it was invented.

The sports most played in France according to popularity are football (soccer), tennis, rugby union, rugby league, and basketball is in the fifth place. The game of basketball was invented on December 1, 1891, in Springfield, Massachusetts by a man named James Naismith. It was first played in France in 1893.

The first European game was held in Paris on December 1893. It was an era when American culture enticed French youth to play basketball. French teams were at the forefront of European competition in the 1930s and post-World War II period.

France’s period of glory in the history of basketball began in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The French basketball team led by Robert Busnel won an Olympic silver medal at the 1948 Olympics which took place in London. It was the first medal in France’s basketball history. The game ended with France losing to the United States who won the gold medal at that time.

France won two consecutive medals under coach Andre Vacheresse. They won bronze at the Eurobasket in 1951 and 1953. However, in the 1960s and 1970s, French basketball team was in a low spot. Their teams had disappeared almost completely from the major world competitions.

Until the 1970s in France, even though there is a French national basketball team, there are were no basketball games shown regularly on TV. There were often basketball gyms available but many kids didn’t own a basketball to play with. In the 1980s NBA games started to be shown on TV and this started a growth in popularity of the game.

This next generation of players included French basketball icons such as Richard Dacoury and Jacques Monclar. With a great line-up of players during this decade, the French national team had the opportunity to return to the Olympics in 1984 and in the FIBA World Championship in 1986.

Young French players were not attracted to the NBA games just because of the style of the game but it was also because basketball started to become a part of French pop culture. The NBA game and culture created new a new generations of fans. It imparted the fashion, music, and sneaker culture that surrounded the sport in the 1980s and 1990s.

Michael Jordan was also one of the major reasons for this change in France. He was really the most effective athlete of his generation ad marketed world wide as a great instrument in popularizing the NBA around the globe including France.

France competed in the Eurobasket in 2003 with a talented team that included NBA players Tony Parker, Jerome Moiso and Tariq Abdul-Wahad. The team also included future NBA-player Boris Diaw and Euroleague players Laurent Foirest, Cyril Julian and Florent Pietrus.

The French national basketball team has had strong results in competing internationally over the years. Many French nationals have entered to play in the NBA. There are 22 French citizens that have played in the NBA in the United States and in Canada as of the 2015-2016 season.

Like other young men, French NBA players left home to chase their dreams in the U.S. at the top of the sport. Many have left their mark on the sport such as five time NBA champion Tony Parker as well as many others. Soccer may still on the top spot when it comes to the county’s most played sport but basketball is continuing to gain popularity.

PARIS - It's the number one women's team sport in France and now the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) have once again set a new record for the number of licensed players.

The eye-catching upward trajectory of participation in recent years has been linked with the success of the national teams in competing or medals, along with the hosting of major tournaments in the country. These include FIBA EuroBasket 2015 which smashed attendance records, as well as the 2016 FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Now all eyes are focused on the exciting prospect of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with the dynamic national team star Marine Johannes having recently been named to the prestigious Athletes Commission for the quadrennial event.

Even though the current season is not yet over in France, the number of registrations has soared from 661,025 to 668,312 - something which seals a ninth consecutive annual increase.

A thrilled FFBB President, Jean-Pierre Siutat, said: "Despite a difficult global context (the fall of the National Center for Sport's Development, reduction of most public financing, subsidized jobs cut, the uberization of sport), this new historic record of licensed players demonstrates all of the attractiveness of French basketball.

"It serves to reward the work carried out daily by our clubs, departmental committees, regional leagues, as well as the services of the Federation (FFBB), all of whom implement the federal policy across the territory. We also owe this evolution to the good results achieved by the National Basketball League (LNB), the Women's Basketball League (LFB), professional clubs and to the exposure of French basketball.

"The young people who are starting out in basketball can identify with the players from our French teams, who shine as much through their commitment to the national jersey and the sport's value as by their excellent performances (both the men's and women's French national teams are ranked third in FIBA's World Rankings)."

He continued: "Paris will host the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in the summer of 2024. This formidable challenge for French sport calls for both excellence and high performance.

"It will require French basketball to continue its modernization and, in line with its project 'FFBB 2024', evolve its sporting offerings (basketball and 3x3) and non-sporting ones within its 4,500 historical clubs or for new clubs that will join the Federation as of next season.

Jean-Pierre Siutat (FRA)

"We will unveil FFBB 2024 in June and it will be our answer to preparing the legacy of the Olympics and the transformation of our sport to better satisfy the demand of our future licensed players," concluded Siutat.

Popularization of basketball in Russia

Federal University, Rostov-on-Don, Russia

The necessity of basketball popularization in Russia is substantiated. The solution of this issue is highlighted in the literature. The result of a sociological survey is given, on the basis of which the immediate prospects for the development of basketball in Russia are calculated.

Keywords: basketball, popularity, analysis, opinion poll, development prospects

Basketball is a sport that millions of people around the world are passionate about. In the United States, a certain cult of this sport has even formed. The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the men's professional basketball league in the United States and Canada, currently the best in the world.

Europe also maintains a high level of basketball development. For example, in Lithuania basketball is considered a national sport. The London Arsenal club has been actively promoting its sport in some areas of the British capital, ensuring that local teenagers change basketballs for footballs.

This sport is growing in popularity in Japan. Manga (Japanese comic) "Kuroko no Basuke", dedicated to basketball, during 2012-2013. remained in the top three most popular and best-selling works [8]. Basketball is the most popular among students of the Syrian Arab Republic among sports games, although its effective use in the process of physical education is hampered by the imperfection of the youth education system in the Middle East [1. S. 62].

Despite the popularity of basketball around the world, in some regions this discipline is not accepted. Judging by the statistics, in Russia basketball occupies only the fourth place in the ranking of the most popular sports disciplines [6]. But this is a professional area. In the amateur sphere, the share of those interested is even smaller, the sites are empty, the rings are broken. In some cases, when conducting amateur sports events, basketball is not included in the list of disciplines in which competitions are held.

The most popular sports in Russia, which are popular not only among professionals but also among amateurs, are football and volleyball. Basketball is inferior to them in these indicators. However, it is basketball that has the greatest potential and opportunities for future development. Today, football has already reached its peak in terms of building new stadiums and providing the sport with new equipment; volleyball, although it lags behind the latter, but, like football, has sufficient financial support from the state.

An article by two Ukrainian authors S. G. Zashchuk and T. V. Ivchatova “Basketball in the physical education of students of non-sports universities” shows the full extent of the need to improve society by introducing sports into everyday life [5. S. 69]. The authors note that sports (in particular, basketball) have a positive effect on the general, even mental development of a student, and give numerous arguments in favor of the fact that basketball promotes creative thinking, improves nervous processes, increases a student's endurance in mental stress and improves other qualities.

M. V. Bazilevich in the article “Efficiency of sportized basketball lessons at the university” argues that within the framework of sports-oriented physical education, which is based on taking into account the interests of those involved, it is possible not only to improve the physical fitness and health of student youth, but also to form a sports culture of the individual [3. S. 25].

The authors of the articles prove that the implementation of a policy of free choice of a sport has a positive effect on the growth of independence among young people.

The Student Basketball Association (ASB) plays an important role in the development of basketball in the country. It not only maintains the level of student competitions and the organization of this sport, but also gives the winners of the annual ASB championship the opportunity to compete at the European Championship among students, thereby increasing the chances of athletes to get into the professional league [7. S. 170].

The President of the Russian Basketball Federation A. G. Kirilenko noted that financial support from the state would make it possible to more effectively involve capable people in basketball [4]. This is what the Russian Basketball Federation is now striving for.

First of all, the federation intends to improve the quality of basketball schools. (There are 300 registered basketball schools in Russia, but in reality there are 170. ) Then the Federation plans to create a single base of basketball players - from professionals to amateurs, including schoolchildren, which will make work with athletes more targeted than it has been before. . These events demonstrate how relevant and important the topic of the spread of basketball in Russia is now.

But no matter how useful basketball is, the share of those interested in this sport remains negligible compared to the same football. However, there are still prospects for the development and dissemination of this discipline, and very favorable ones, as the study showed, or rather, a survey of young people in educational institutions.

The survey (oral interview) was conducted with high school students of school No. A. S. Pushkin (Vladikavkaz) and students of the Southern Federal University (Rostov-on-Don). To the question “Are you fond of such a sport as basketball, and are you interested in its development?” in Vladikavkaz, 80% of respondents answered in the negative; in Rostov-on-Don, 73% of respondents supported the idea of spreading and developing this sport discipline. The results of the survey characterize the attitude towards basketball of an average youth representative in different regions of the Russian Federation. The youth of the central cities are more interested in the spread and development of basketball than their peers in the periphery. Perhaps the decision of the respondents was influenced by age: the older the respondents were, the more often the answer was positive.

I would also like to discuss what can be done not only to increase the popularity of basketball in Russia, but also to improve the quality of this

game. Increasing the number of physical education classes in educational institutions is an important task. Today in Russia, students are engaged in physical education in universities until the fourth (sometimes up to the third) year. It is necessary to extend physical education classes at least until the student receives a bachelor's degree. The Russian Basketball Federation should introduce the so-called draft - a procedure for recruiting students into teams who do not have a contract with any team in the league. The NBA has been drafting almost since the league's inception, which has been one of the main factors behind the rapid rise in youth basketball's popularity.

In the article "Formation of the needs of teenagers and young men in basketball and street ball: Russian and international experience" a detailed study was presented, proving the positive impact of street ball on the team game in basketball. The authors noted that the correct parallel involvement of players in both disciplines will improve tactical thinking and explore new strategic combinations and techniques [2. S. 7].

Conclusions.

It follows from the above analysis of the sources that basketball is not yet a widespread and "favorite" sport in Russia, although this sport has great potential for improving health, it is spectacular, it gives emotional satisfaction to both players and fans. Basketball is one of the most beloved sports in the West.

The outlook for basketball in Russia remains twofold. On the one hand, its popularity is growing, and on the other hand, basketball may lose what it has if no action is taken to popularize and spread it.

RUSSIA - FRANCE - 67:74 / Russian Basketball Federation

The Russian men's team lost to the French in the group stage match of the European Championship - 67:74.

Already before the start of this match, it became known that our team had lost all chances to qualify from the group, so this game had no tournament value for the Russian team.

Nevertheless, the Russian basketball players came out against the reigning European champions extremely motivated. Our starting five (Pateev, Fridzon, Khvostov, Monya, Vorontsevich) had an excellent stretch, forcing Vincent Collet to take a timeout with the score 17:8 in favor of the Russian team with 3. 34 left in the quarter. The classic interaction between the playmaker and the center gave Ruslan Pateev six points from the game.

Dmitry Khvostov chalked up three assists, and in one of the attacks this duo performed a “parachute”. Vitaly Fridzon scored three times from behind the arc. Moreover, he attacked through the hands of the French defenders.

Opponents did not have the best first quarter: losses during passes, missed free-kicks, fouls in attack, attacks in the last seconds of possession from extremely uncomfortable positions.

The Russian team earned the maximum advantage (13 points) in the middle of the second quarter, but the French did not let our team break away: at the end of the half they “turned on”, made several interceptions, after which they ran into fast breaks. Russian basketball players did not have time to return, so they were forced to foul. The teams went to the big break with the score 36:34 in our favor.

The third quarter turned out to be almost equal. The fourth, which at first developed favorably for the Russian team (+6), then became the benefit of the French attack. Over the last four minutes, the owners of the site made a breakthrough 14:4 and did not allow the Russian basketball players to catch on in the end.

Vitaly Fridzon became the most productive player with 20 points. Dmitry Khvostov gave out 10 assists. Andrei Vorontsevich made 9 rebounds.

Center Andrey Desyatnikov and defender Yevgeny Baburin made their debut at the European Championship in this match. In the five minutes spent on the court, Evgeny scored two interceptions, while Andriy played for more than 17 minutes and, with the help of his partners, who loaded him with passes under the basket, scored 8 points.

Russian national team center Andrey Desyatnikov:

— Thanks to the coach for the debut.
