Buying a Basketball Hoop: What to Look for
August 10, 2021 Basketball Goals
As soon as you begin your search for a basketball hoop, you’ll soon realize there is no shortage of brands and models available. Whether you’re a first time buyer or or looking to replace an existing system, here are some key factors to keep in mind when buying a basketball hoop:
Installation Type
This one of the primary factors to consider when purchasing a basketball hoop. There are 4 main basketball goal installation types.
Portable
Portable basketball hoops are generally cheaper and smaller than hoops that are cemented into the ground. These goals include a base that is stabilized with either water or sand. Because of this, these goals CANNOT be dunked on. Additionally, they may be at risk of damage from garbage collectors as well. They are, however, a great solution for situations where mounting a goal in-ground simply isn’t possible (rental properties, for example).
Wall-Mount
Wall-mounted hoops are mounted to, you guess it- the wall. This type of hoop works well when space doesn’t allow for an in-ground goal. They should be installed by a qualified professional to ensure safety and structural integrity of the wall to which it is being mounted. If the goal is indoors, consider also adding wall-padding for player safety. Wall mounts usually come in an adjustable version that allows you to change heights and fixed that keeps the hoop affixed and rigid.
Pro Tip: If you use water as a base-filler for your portable hoop, be sure to drain it or add an antifreeze to the water before Winter. Otherwise, the base can become damaged when the water freezes and expands.
Direct Burial (Permanent) In-Ground
Basketball hoops with the post cemented directly into the ground are known as direct-burial in-ground hoops. The goals provide much more stability than portable goals. The drawback to this type of goal is that it cannot be moved once it is installed. This type of goal is most commonly found in commercial applications such as parks, where height adjustment isn’t needed.
In-Ground Semi Portable
Semi-portable in-ground goals, on the other hand, are mounted onto a completely separate anchor system that is cemented into the ground. This provides the same stability of a direct-burial post while still allowing the goal to be moved to a new location (if you move to a new home, for example). Then, only a new anchor kit is needed, rather than an entirely new basketball system. Goalrilla and Goalsetter goals feature this type of installation. Most residential high end hoops have moved to this system for both ease of installation and portability when moving.
The Backboard
Backboard Size
The size of the backboard is another important factor to consider when buying a basketball hoop. The most common sizes you’ll find are 54”, 60”, and 72”. This refers to the width of the backboard. The heights will vary also, depending on the model.
Regulation backboard size is 72”x42”. If you are purchasing a hoop for an aspiring high school or college athlete, or if you just want the most authentic, arena-like experience, the 72”x42” is the way to go. If you don’t need a goal quite that big, the 60” hoops are great mid-size hoops and the most popular choice for residential use. 54” goals are more common for smaller driveways that don’t have as much space to accommodate a larger hoop. For more info on finding a backboard size that fits your space, check out What Size Backboard Do I Need?
Backboard Material
Along with backboard size, you’ll want to consider backboard material. You’ll typically find basketball hoop backboards in one of 3 materials: Polycarbonate, Acrylic, or Tempered Glass
Polycarbonate backboards are made from a clear plastic material. They are often used on cheaper hoops because while they are very strong, the polycarbonate material has one major drawback; after prolonged exposure to UV light (aka sunlight), these backboards begin to turn an unflattering shade of cloudy yellow and become brittle. This can happen in as little as 3-5 years.
Acrylic is similar to polycarbonate in that it is a strong, clear backboard material. Unlike polycarbonate, however, acrylic will not become cloudy, yellow, and brittle over time. Acrylic maintains its brilliance after 15-20 years of sun exposure. It’s also very strong and unlikely to chip or crack, even if someone were to throw stones at it.
Tempered glass backboards are what you’ll find on pro-style hoops and in high school, college, and NBA arenas. The backboards are made from a safety glass that is hardened in the production process, making it 5-10 times stronger than normal glass. Tempered glass provides the most rigidity and better, more consistent rebounding across the glass.

The Rim
Rim Material
The rim of the basketball goal should be made of steel to ensure strength and stability. The rim should be at least 19mm thick. Thinner rims may seem more cost-effective initially, but are prone to bending and even breaking over time. This means a lower quality rim could also pose a safety hazard. For outdoor hoops, we recommend a rim that is finished with a weatherproof paint to reduce the risk of rust.
Pro Tip: For the best performance, look for a high-quality steel rim with an NBA official diameter of 18 inches.
Rim Suspension
In addition to rim material, you’ll also want to pay attention to the spring or suspension system of the rim when buying a basketball hoop. There are 3 basic types of rims: Static (or standard), Exposed Spring Breakaway, and Enclosed Spring Breakaway.
Static or standard rims have no spring, meaning the rim cannot flex. This puts added pressure on the backboard and is not ideal for dunking since the extra pressure can cause the backboard to shatter. The cheaper version of these rims are typically found on portable basketball goals which are not meant to be dunked on. Sometimes they are found on higher end goals, for example a commercial application where they are looking to deter dunking. Goalsetter even offers a double ring static rim that is considered extremely durable for commercial applications.
A breakaway rim, on the other hand, contains a hinge and a super strong spring (or springs) at the point of attachment to the backboard. This allows the rim to bend downward and then snap back into place when a player dunks on the goal without affecting the backboard. Exposed spring breakaway rims are open underneath with the springs exposed (hence the name). This is not preferred for outdoor use since exposure can lead to rust. Goalrilla carries both a medium weight and heavy weight flex rim.
Enclosed spring breakaway rims have the spring fully enclosed, making it the ideal choice for longevity of outdoor use. This is the type of rim found on pro-level hoops, and is what you’ll find on every Goalrilla goal.
Net Material
The net attached to the rim serves two primary functions. It provides a clear indication to players, referees, and spectators when a basket is made. It also slows the ball’s trajectory as it passes through the hoop and guides it back down toward the court (ideally straight underneath the rim).
Basketball nets can be found in a variety of materials. For outdoor play, we recommend a nylon net because they are incredibly durable and made to withstand the harsh weather elements of snow, rain, and wind.
Height Adjustability
Height adjustability is an important consideration, particularly when buying a basketball hoop with younger players in mind. Goals that can be adjusted lower make the hoop accessible for younger children, or players who simply desire a lowered rim. Look for a goal that includes a removable actuator handle so you can lock the height in place and prevent unwanted height adjustments.
ASTM standards dictate that a hoop should NOT lower beyond 7.5’ for safety reasons. If 7.5’ isn’t quite low enough for your little ones, consider an add-on like the Silverback Junior Basketball Hoop – a smaller backboard that mounts directly to the post of your full-size hoop. That way, everyone can get in on the fun while staying safe. For more info, check out our article that goes over the dangers of lowering below 7.5 feet in detail.
Warranty
Before purchasing a goal you’ll also want to research the type of warranty included. Is it a 1-year? 5-year? Lifetime? Pay attention to which parts are warrantied and for how long. This will give you a good indication of the quality of the goal and its intended longevity. Goalrilla goals, for example, include a limited lifetime warranty because the goals are intended to last for as long as you own them.
Manufacturer
What’s in a name? Well, a lot, as it turns out. The most well-known brands are household names for a reason. It takes years of product development and testing to build consumer trust. If your eye is caught by an ad for a basketball hoop from a brand you haven’t heard of, do a quick web search to see what (if anything) other people are saying about them. Remember the old rule of thumb – if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
If your eye is caught by an ad for a basketball hoop from a brand you haven’t heard of, do a quick web search to see what (if anything) other people are saying about them. And remember to be leery of reviews that are only from their website and not from an approved third party application like Shopper Approved, which is one of only a handful or merchant reviewers to be syndicated by Google’s trusted network of providers.
Here are a few quick tips to sum up:
Installation Type: A semi-portable hoop with a separate anchor is your best choice. A portable goal is also an option if in-ground mounting isn’t possible.
Rim: Breakaway or flex rims are the way to go, as they flex under pressure. Make sure the rim is regulation-size 18 inches in diameter.
Backboard Size: 60” backboards are the most popular. 72”x42” is regulation size. 54” hoops are great for smaller driveways.
Backboard Material: Acrylic or tempered glass are ideal for outdoor use. Tempered glass provides the most rigidity and consistent rebounding (this is used in professional settings).
Height Adjustability: look for a goal that can be easily adjusted (but not lower than the ASTM standard pf 7.5’)

Show off your court skills at home by finding the hoop that fits your needs.
Whether you’re helping your future playmaker improve their game or just looking to shoot free-throws in your spare time, a basketball hoop can become a cherished part of your home for the whole family.
But where do you start? Which kind of hoop is best for you and your needs? You’ll need to take into account a variety of factors, from location to backboard material. There are a number of styles and combinations, so let’s take a shot to find the type that best suits you.
Do you already know which type of hoop you need? Shop all basketball hoops at DICK’S and get the game going!
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Before buying your basketball hoop, you’ll want to have an area with plenty of space. A flat, paved spot is usually best, making driveways a popular option. If you decide to place a basketball hoop on the street or sidewalk, just be sure to keep street safety in mind. Some neighborhoods prohibit installation on these public spaces, so check with your borough first.
TYPES OF HOOPS
Once you know where your hoop will go, start looking at the different types that are available. Each has its own benefits, with designs created for a variety of players:
In-Ground: In-ground hoops can offer exceptional stability and durability. These hoops are typically fastened to the ground in one of two ways. The traditional method is to place the pole directly into the ground and seal it with cement — a great option if you plan to keep the hoop in a permanent location. However, if you’d like more freedom to move the hoop, there are also anchor-mounted options in which the pole is fastened to a plate that sits atop the ground. This gives you the ability to unfasten the pole and move the hoop to a different spot (or even a different home if you move).
Shop All In-Ground Hoops
Portable: If you’re looking for convenience, you may want to consider a portable hoop. These stand-alone models feature bases with wheels, allowing you to move the hoop quickly when needed. The bases typically range in size from 27–42 gallons, and they can be filled with water, sand or BaseGel for stability. And, because there is no digging or hanging required, portable hoops tend to have the most straight-forward assembly.
Shop All Portable Hoops
Mounted: These models typically feature a backboard and hoop that can be mounted onto a structure, like a garage or exterior wall of your home. These hoops offer superior stability and allow you to make a court with limited room. Many mounted hoopsare set at a fixed height, though there are some that can be adjusted.

THE BACKBOARD
The material used in the backboard will affect how the ball bounces off of it as well as the hoop’s overall durability.
Tempered Glass: This is the material used at the pro level. Tempered glass offers players a similar bounce and spin they’ll find in gyms.
Acrylic: These hoops offer the look of glass at a lower price. They also tend to be lightweight, so they don’t need as much support. More experienced players may notice a different bounce or spin than they’d see at the gym.
Polycarbonate: These backboards are highly durable and offer a similar bounce as acrylic. They are designed to withstand the elements.
Also take into account the size of the backboard. These can range from 44″ up to 72″, which is the regulation size at the professional level. The smaller-sized backboards, typically between 44″ and 54″, save on space and are good for a standard two-car driveway. The 60″ backboard is a great midway point, saving space but still offering a larger size for banking shots.
Backboards generally come in two distinct shapes: rectangular and fan-shaped. Rectangle backboards are more common and offer players more space to spin the ball off the glass. The fan-shaped backboards tend to take up less room. Sometimes, it can come down to which look you like better.
OTHER ESSENTIALS
After figuring out which type of hoop and backboard best fits your needs, you will want to take into account what makes up the rest of the hoop:
Rim: The standard rim on a basketball hoop is 18″ in diameter. Most modern hoops are equipped with a breakaway, spring-loaded rim. The springs may be exposed in some lower-priced hoops while most higher-priced options have the springs enclosed to help protect it from the elements.
Poles: If you are buying a portable or in-ground hoop, take into account the type of pole used. Round poles are typical for portable and smaller in-ground options. Made of multiple pieces, these are not designed for dunking. A square pole holds up better against shaking and vibrations. These components are made of a single piece of steel and can help provide the support for heavier backboards as well as players looking to dunk. Also, if you’re considering an in-ground hoop, make sure to check if the pole is designed to go directly into the ground or if it bolts down on top of a plate. Go with the plate-mounted option if you want freedom to move the hoop.
Nets: Hoops commonly come with nets made of nylon. But you can also use a chain link net, which can have a long lifespan but also rust if left out in wet weather. Breakaway net clips can be added. They will disengage if too much pressure is applied.
Height adjustment: Depending on the type of hoop you buy, it may come with a height adjustment mechanism. This is a good option for parents who have a younger player not ready to play on a full-size hoop but will grow into it. Most of these hoops can adjust from 7 1/2 ‘ up to 10’, though some come with a larger range.
Now that you know what to look for it’s time to turn your space into your own personal court. Once you have your hoop set up, you’ll be ready to show off your skills to the rest of the neighborhood.

It's easy to please family and friends: how to make a basketball hoop with your own hands at home
Basketball is a great game, and the street version is the most democratic kind of sport. It can be played by a team of 6-8 people or by yourself to train throws.
A basketball hoop installed in the backyard or in the yard is sure to gather fans of this sport around. Moreover, often homemade product is better than purchased options , since the age, height, and preferences of the players are taken into account.
It could be is an order of magnitude stronger and more durable than store-bought . And a person receives much more moral satisfaction from a hand-made ring.
How to make a basketball backboard with your own hands
First, you need to decide which ring you want to get in the end. Just a basket with a wall or tree mount, or a complete shield complete with everything you need. Then - choose a place to install the shield and prepare the site. Next - break down the work into stages.
Photo 1. Schematic of a standard basketball backboard with required measurements. To play in the yard, it is not necessary to consider all of them.
Tools and materials
jigsaw for metal;
hacksaw for wood;
drill or hammer drill;
adjustable wrenches;
paint and brush.
9 can be used to make the ring0400 thick steel wire , at least 5 mm in diameter , iron strip or old hula hoop . It will have to be shortened a little in the future. For the manufacture of the shield, plywood will be used, at least 5 mm thick . If the shield is to be installed in the yard, a strong pole is provided for support.
Dimensions
Ring size should be 45 cm in diameter (slightly larger than a basketball). Shield size - 180x105 cm.
The product will be attached at the bottom of the shield: 5 cm from the edge. So, from the ring to the top of the shield there should be exactly 1 meter.
The shield can be hung at any height depending on the average height and age of the players. But it is also possible on the standard one - 3 m 5 cm.
This will allow players to feel comfortable on any standard court in the future.
If the ring is attached not just to a tree, wall or post, but has its own shield , then it must have the appropriate appearance. The shield is usually white with black perimeter stripes and a painted square directly above the net. The size of the square is 45 cm high and 56 cm wide. This standard will make the game correct and help to put the ball directly into the basket, because if it hits the square, it will bounce right on the target.
Making a basketball hoop
0400 wind around a cylindrical object and fasten both ends. If from the hula-hoop tube, cut out the unnecessary part of the hoop with a hacksaw and reconnect the ends. When making a ring, you need to remember to make fasteners, for example, bend the ends of the wire in one direction, so that you can then attach them to the shield.
On the ring there must be a net : after the ball hits the target, it will direct it straight down, and not to any corner of the court. It takes 9 to craft.0400 long cord.
Pieces of cord approx.
Then with another piece in a circle, tie all the ropes, and so several times with an interval of 5-6 cm. Net is ready.
Shield is sawn with a jigsaw or hacksaw, after marking with a pencil. After that, the product can be painted.
Important! The black stripes and the square above the basket on the shield must be 5 cm wide otherwise they will simply not be visible.
After the paint has dried, you can attach a ring to the shield, and fix the shield itself to a pole or wall. The rate and type of fasteners depends on what the ring was made of and how the shield will be attached. The main thing is to calculate so that the design can withstand at least 40-50 kg of load.
Home mount
If the ring is made from round wire , and its ends are bent down, then they can be pulled to the shield with 2 bolts connected by a metal plate in the area of the caps.
If the ring is made from a wide iron strip , then you must first bend the ends so that the strip fits snugly against the shield.
Such a product is also fastened with bolts threaded through pre-drilled holes in the strip and plywood.
If there is no shield and the ring must be attached directly to the wall, then anchors can be used instead of bolts . In this case, you will need a puncher to make holes in the wall.
To a tree or wooden post , ring can be nailed with 100 mm nails or screwed with long wood screws.
Attention! Whatever type of fastening is used, they have one thing in common - , it is necessary to put the ring on a horizontal level. If it hangs crooked, the ball will slide off the edges past the basket.
After the shield and ring are fixed, the site is prepared. It should not have stones, puddles, and protruding stumps. Basketball is a very traumatic sport and players do not need any extra risk at all, they will stumble over a bush, stump or stone sticking out on the court. If the ring is installed indoors, then before playing , you need to make sure that everything that breaks easily is hidden, and the glass on the windows is securely protected.

Which ring is better, homemade or purchased. There is no definite answer here. Homemade product performs sporting functions and is more aesthetically pleasing than for family members and friends of the manufacturer.
Even if outwardly it is a little more unsightly than store bought. In addition, homemade is calculated for certain loads . Whereas a store product, it is not known how much it will sag in conditions of harsh operation.
On the other hand, high-quality, expensive , a ring with a shield, produced at the factory in compliance with all sizes and GOST , handmade, unique. So it's up to the players to choose.
What is the diameter of the basketball hoop?
Basketball is a ball game that originated in Massachusetts. The weather here is very unstable, so a game that could be played indoors was needed. A feature of the game is that the players need to show their dexterity by throwing the ball into the ring with a net, located at a height of three meters.
Features of rings
Each playing court must have two rings of the same size. The thickness of the hoop cannot exceed two centimeters. The traditional diameter of a basketball hoop is 45 cm, which is enough for the ball to pass through. Also, the basket is equipped with a mesh that is securely fixed. The mesh ring is placed on a special shield, three meters away from the ground. It is very important that the basket is well attached to the pad, as players often jump and hang on it during the game, which can cause it to break. Due to this, it is able to withstand loads up to 82 kg.
The maximum diameter of the basketball hoop is 45.7 mm. But this is not its only feature. It is painted bright red so that the player can clearly see it when making a throw. All basketball players must be tall. Otherwise, they would not be able to hit the target, since the ring is usually located at a height of three meters from the ground.
Height of the backboard
The height of the basketball hoop is 3. 05 meters from the ground. A person of average height is unlikely to be able to hit him with a ball. Therefore, special racks are installed in schools, thanks to which you can adjust the height at which the basket is located. The shield itself is installed at a height of three meters. The ring is attached a little higher - from here another 5 cm of height appear. The shield is necessary in order for the ball to bounce off it and hit the playing court again.
DIY basketball hoop
Most people make their own basketball hoops, which are installed in the country or even at home. After all, the game captivates everyone, regardless of age. To make a basket at home, you need to consider the size of the basketball hoop. In addition, all materials should be purchased. This is a thick wire and rope. If there is no wire, then you can use the old halahup. It needs to be cut, shortened to the required size (the diameter of the basketball hoop should be only 45 cm), and then reconnected. When making a ring out of wire, you should use something instead of a template (some kind of cylindrical vessel), around which you need to wind the wire.
The diameter of a homemade basketball hoop should be only a few cm larger than the diameter of the ball. After that, you need to take the rope and cut it into 20 segments of the same length. They must be attached to a metal ring. Then you need to tie the two ends of the adjacent ropes around the circumference of the ring. You need to secure the basket well so that it does not fall off after being hit by the ball.
Benefits of a DIY Basketball Hoop
Making your own basketball hoop is easy. However, many people wonder which is better: bought or created on their own? Of course, making something with your own hands is always nice. However, this requires materials, free time. Anyway, you need to learn how to work with welding in order to connect the ring. If this is difficult for you, then it is better to purchase a basket from trusted manufacturers.
