How to get ranked in middle school basketball

How to Get Ranked in FAB 50

There are more than 18,000 high schools nationwide with boys’ hoops programs, but only 50 have the credentials to reside in the FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by Ballislife.com.

The following steps can land your basketball team in the FAB 50 rankings:

Play the strongest schedule possible.
Teams which desire to be ranked in the FAB 50 play competitive schedules, including tournaments or showcases with opponents who could be ranked. The adage “If you want to be the best, beat the best” holds true.

Defeat a FAB 50-ranked team.
Upsets are common in boys’ hoops, but beating a ranked team — especially a winning team with a good track record — can make a huge statement.

Own significant head-to-head victories.
These results carry weight among the editors compiling the FAB 50. A non-ranked team has a strong argument if it defeats a ranked team — or previously ranked team. Sometimes in basketball, there are “fluke” wins, where a non-ranked team upsets a highly-ranked team, then goes back to playing at the level it did previously. That’s why a pattern of success or winning a tournament with multiple FAB 50-ranked teams is a sure way to move up or into the rankings.

Earn a high ranking in your state or region.
The FAB 50 takes into consideration credible state rankings. If a team wants to be nationally ranked, it must be a consensus top choice in its own state or local rankings.

Root for your rivals.
If an opponent you’ve defeated beats some highly ranked teams during its season, it makes a case for a ranking. This is especially true in basketball where top-ranked teams schedule non-league games against each other or meet down the line in the playoffs.

Come from one of the traditional hoops hotbeds.
A successful program’s location in a traditional hotbed for boys’ basketball such as New York City, Philadelphia, California, or Illinois certainly doesn’t hurt its chances to be ranked. This category has expanded and contracted over the years. For instance, high school basketball in Texas once lagged behind spring football. Memphis has long been a hoops stronghold and now receives long-deserved national recognition.

Dominate a non-power state.
Plenty of ranked teams fit into this category. That is why teams with extended and dominant in-state successes make the cut. They’ve earned their spot by setting standards in those states (multiple state title streaks, record victory streaks, etc.).

Have a top recruit on your team.
“Wait a minute,” you might say. “I thought the FAB 50 rankings were based on game results, not player rankings.” That is true, the FAB 50 is based on game results. But with the explosion of national events, holiday tournaments and intersectional competition, boys’ basketball has the most solid foundation to rank teams among the high school sports. That relates to individual talent because in basketball, one player can make a difference. Having a player near the top of the 247Sports, Rivals.com, Scouts.com, ESPN.com or Hoop Scoop player rankings increases the likelihood of being invited to a tournament or showcase. That’s where the opportunity to defeat another ranked team lies.

Basketball rankings are the most pure of the national ratings since there are more measuring sticks and barometers to base judgments and team positioning.

FAB 50 Basketball Policy: We do not rank teams with players on the roster that have completed eight semesters of high school i.e. 5th-year players. We do not rank programs that don’t follow age cutoff guidelines of the state association in which the program resides or the recommended date outlined by the NFHS  (19 before September 1). Programs also must be recognized by a high school athletics governing body or be an associate member of a state association. Generally, programs must be allowed to play members schools of the state association in which the program resides and, outside of recruiting, follow all other rules of the high school governing body in that particular state. If coaches intentionally provide false or misleading information about his/her program, it automatically disqualifies that particular program from inclusion in the FAB 50 this year and each subsequent year.

Basketball Recruiting Rankings | NCAA Basketball Recruiting Rankings

Basketball recruiting rankings consist of ratings of high school players overall, by position and by state as well as basketball team rankings of which colleges nationally and by conference have the best overall classes. The latter set of rankings helps fans learn which teams may be the best ones in the years to come.

Of course, college basketball recruiting rankings are an inexact science, so all basketball recruiting rankings should be taken with a grain of salt. We don’t know exactly how the best high school athletes will perform in college or if they will make it to or be contributing players at the professional level afterwards. However, basketball recruiting rankings remain important to those looking to be basketball commits as players listed are who they are competing against for scholarships and, in some cases, playing time.

The major basketball recruiting rankings such as 247 basketball recruiting rankings, Rivals basketball recruiting rankings and ESPN basketball recruiting rankings all use star ratings in ranking top basketball recruits. The highest is five stars while the lowest is two stars. Nobody receives one star; you either receive two or more or zero.

But it’s important to remember that basketball recruiting rankings can be inaccurate at times in both directions. Not only do some blue chippers falter and not contribute much in college, there are also others who were not all that highly thought of in the basketball recruiting rankings but ended up not only being a top college player but also, in some cases, doing well in the pros. One example is Jimmy Butler, who has been a multiple NBA All-Star and Olympian. He was 1,253rd in his recruiting class before he went to Tyler Junior College prior to playing at Marquette University and heading off to the NBA.

College basketball recruiting rankings and star rankings

A lot goes into basketball recruiting rankings as the various organizations that rate and rank them do their best to project how impactful these players will be at the next level. This is done via a variety of ways. For example, they tend to have dozens of analysts spread out across the country who take a look at top players any way that they can, including in person when possible as well as through film evaluation.

The ratings then allow these services to rank players, first within star ratings and then within those subgroups as well as by geographical region and position.

  • Five-star prospects are the best of the best. Just a few dozen if that will receive this type of rating, and demand for them is high as those involved with UNC basketball recruiting, Michigan basketball recruiting, Kentucky basketball recruiting and recruiting efforts at other top schools tend to be highly interested. Players who are rated at five stars comprise roughly 1 percent of the basketball players who are at two stars and above.
  • Four-star prospects are also very talented players and in the top fraction of a percent of high school players nationwide. There will be a few hundred in this category, and these players are expected to have a significant impact on whichever college team he or she heads to. Professional play after college is often expected as well.
  • Three-star prospects tend to be amongst the top players in their region, will generally develop into a starting player for an NCAA Division I team and have potential to play professionally after their time in college is over.
  • Two-star prospects listed in various NCAA basketball recruiting rankings are expected to be able to play ball at a Division I school but is not expected to be a regular starter or to become a pro afterwards.
  • Zero-star prospects or those who are not on the radar by those compiling college basketball recruiting rankings or from Division I schools and tend to either walk on at those colleges or play for an NCAA Division II or III or NAIA team. However, it’s important to note that only a small percentage of high school players end up playing college ball at any level, so that is still an impressive achievement and can make for a fulfilling collegiate experience.

What is a Blue Chip prospect ? What is a Yellow Chip athlete?

Other terms related to the star ratings are blue chip and yellow chip. Although blue chip is one that doesn’t have an exact definition, most view it as describing those who have rated at five stars or at five or four stars. Conversely, yellow chip athletes are those who are at the next level, still highly in demand but not nearly as much as is the case for blue chip athletes.

NCAA basketball recruiting rankings

It’s recommended that top basketball recruits research who their competition is to get a feel for what they’re up against overall, by position and by school. Fortunately, due to how much interest there is amongst fans and others in the college basketball recruiting process, a lot of information is out there from a variety of sources.

Here are some of the most respected NCAA basketball recruiting rankings:

  • ESPN basketball recruiting rankings
  • Future150 basketball recruiting rankings
  • Scout basketball recruiting rankings
  • Rivals basketball recruiting rankings
  • 247 basketball recruiting rankings

Basketball scouting reports

Although much of what goes into basketball recruiting rankings cannot be easily put into a few words or numbers, the information that’s included in scouting reports can be quite useful to a lot of people. Those accompanying NCAA basketball recruiting rankings generally include information such as team(s) played for, grade in school, height and weight, but they can also include interesting descriptions ranging from a few sentences to several paragraphs. These can go into detail on which positions the players have played and can play, how comfortable they are around the basket, their leadership ability and potential and how quick they are, both in terms of acceleration and overall pace. Finally, lists of colleges that are interested in the players and ones that the players are interested in are often shown.

Of course, the information that is included in scouting reports will fluctuate some from source to source.

What is a project recruit or sleeper recruit?

Project or sleeper recruits are those who are not very high in the NCAA basketball recruiting rankings and are not expected by many to put up top college basketball stats but who do have the potential to prove the prognosticators wrong and do well in college. What sets some of these recruits apart from those who simply surprise in college and possibly the pros too is due to things about them that coaching staffs see and realize could result in more potential than is otherwise being shown.

Perhaps somebody is not high in the college basketball recruiting rankings because he or she recently started playing the sport, but coaches can see that his or her potential is high for that reason despite the current ability not being all that great as compared to others of the same age. Another example can be someone who is playing out of position for a high school team as compared to where their strengths would be in college such as a center at a small high school who may be perfect as a shooting guard in college.

Once top basketball recruits have gone through the recruiting process and have decided, it’s time for that to become a commitment. There are three types of commitments, and only one of them is binding.

  • Silent commitment
  • Verbal commitment
  • Signed commitment

Someone who has taken part in a silent commitment is one who has told the coaching staff what the decision is and the coaching staff agrees and wants the player to be a part of the program but who has not told anybody else outside of family and close friends. In other words, the commitment has not been made public.

A verbal commitment is the same except that it now has been made public, including to other schools who had been in the recruiting process prior to this point as well as to national and local media outlets.

However, silent and verbal commitments are ones in which both sides could back out.

A signed commitment occurs when a National Letter of Intent has been signed. Once this has been done, both the university and the student-athlete have committed to providing and accepting a scholarship for at least one academic year. Also, all recruiting efforts by other schools must stop at this point and can only resume if the player later, in their collegiate career, enters the transfer portal.

How to improve your basketball recruiting rankings

Anything that you would do to improve your basketball recruiting rankings would also help you get more noticed by coaching staffs and have a wider selection of schools to choose from. Of course, that makes sense since those compiling college basketball recruiting rankings are attempting to predict as accurately as possible which players will end up being the most highly recruited ones to be offered scholarships.

One of the best ways to improve your standing in both areas is by creating highlight videos. In most cases, coaches will appreciate not needing to search for these, and it also makes the job easier on those who compile NCAA basketball recruiting rankings.

Another activity to consider is participating in basketball camps. These help provide you with more exposure than might be possible while playing for your high school team or otherwise. Also make sure that you understand and keep up with the basketball recruiting timeline. Many of the activities listed there will also have a direct impact on your college basketball recruiting rankings.

It’s also important to note that the recruiting process is competitive in women’s basketball as well and that highlight videos and camps should be taken advantage of by women’s players too. Also take a look at the recruiting timeline as it relates to the female side of the sport so that you can improve your status in the women’s basketball recruiting rankings.

How NCSA can assist

How school basketball works in the USA - Sports and studies in the USA - Blogs

In this article I will tell you how the system of school sports (basketball in particular) works in the USA.

Let's start with the fact that all schools in America are divided into 2 main types - state (public schools) and private (private schools) .

Foreign student athletes can only study in private schools. Public schools are not allowed to issue the i20 form (the document required for obtaining an F1 visa - student visa), and those foreign students who study in public schools are participants in exchange programs (for example, programs FLEX, which was recently closed in Russia), they go to the American School for only a year, then they must return to Russia after a year of study; students who want to leave on an exchange usually cannot choose the school they will go to, but most often they settle in remote villages, away from large cities and all sorts of temptations, but exchange programs are a completely different story.

The number of students in public schools is not comparable to the number of students in private schools. I was told that in public schools in large cities, in some subjects, there can be 40-50 people in the class!

It turns out that foreigners can go to study only in Private schools where education itself is quite expensive. However, athletes and good students can receive discounts on their studies, which in America is called a scholarship (scholarship). The most promising and talented athletes can receive a discount on education up to 100%.

An example of a good American Private school campus

America has a three-tier school system:

  • Elementary school (1st to 5th grade)
  • Middle School (6th to 8th grade)
  • High School (9th to 12th grade)

Americans go to school for 12 years, so they finish school later, usually at the age of 18-19.

Accordingly High School is divided into 4 years:

  • Grade 9 (Freshman year)
  • 10th grade (Sophomore year)
  • 11th grade (Junior year)
  • 12th grade (Senior year)

The same gradation is maintained at the university level: first-year students at the university are called Freshman, second-year students are Sophomore, and so on.

Also on all kinds of highlights of Ballislife players, we see the phrase “class of 2015”, “class of 2016” - this means in what year the player graduates from school. This is due to the fact that in America it is not customary to rank schoolchildren by age (for example, the rating of players is 1995 year of birth), and the ratings are compiled according to the year of study at school, i.e. Some lists may include children of different ages.

ESPN ranking of the 100 best high school basketball players graduating in 2015.

In addition, some schools also have Preparatory year .

Prep year comes after the end of the 12th grade of school and is suitable for those who for some reason could not enter the university or who want to play another year at the school level and better prepare for the university.

Children from 19 to 21 years old study at prep. The season they play is no longer with high cheekbones, but between the same Preps, i. e. unlike school games, here everyone is already about the same age.

Sunrise Academy in Texas is one of the best basketball academies in America where players can take Preparatory Year.

Preps are a good option for foreign athletes. Many who want to go to America at 19 or 20 years old are already suitable for college, but in most cases their level of play does not hold up to receive an athletic scholarship to an American university. Therefore, it is advisable to take a Preparatory year, spend a year at the school level and shine in front of college coaches.

School itself is also very different from Russia.

In American High School students choose their own subjects that they will study during the year. There is a list of compulsory subjects (for example, English, mathematics, history, physical education), the rest of the subjects are optional and the students themselves form their own schedule. You can choose any courses at any time, the main thing is to collect the required number of hours for each of the groups of disciplines for the entire period of study. An example of extracting grades from school

What may seem strange for children who come from Russia is that at the lesson, in one classroom, there can be children from both 9th and 12th grade. Since the students themselves choose at what time they take this or that subject, then, for example, a physics lesson can be taken in the first, and in the high school graduation year.

Each sport has its season of play at certain times, such as American football season from late August to late November, and basketball season from November to March. The number of games and opponents against which the school will play depends on the level of the school itself. Let's say schools with strong basketball like Findlay prep or Oak Hill Academy play 40-45 official games per season.

Oak Hill Academy (who once played Carmelo Anthony, Rajon Rondo, Kevin Durant) went 45-0 this season without losing a game AAU season . Here, the players do not play for schools, but for teams that are formed from the best players in the city / state.

Jabari Parker and Julius Randle during the AAU

College coaches recruit players during both the official and AAU seasons. Under the rules of college basketball, college coaches can only communicate with their potential players during certain periods.

In the next article I will describe the organization of student basketball in the USA (Universities, Junior/Community colleges)

    Trinta
    Sports basketball
Benefits one of the leading basketball schools; easy to do; serious attitude to general education and high scores of the GIA and USE

Requirements: compliance with age and height indicators. Boys are accepted from 9 to 12 years old, girls from 9 to 13 years old. The minimum height for the youngest incoming boys is 146-153 cm, for girls - 150-156 cm. The oldest boys must be at least 171-178 cm, girls - 176-183 cm. All indicators are given on the school website.

In the early stages of its existence, the school did not have a pronounced basketball focus - there were departments of football, volleyball, athletics, field hockey, rhythmic gymnastics, wrestling, cross-country skiing and biathlon. Later, some of these departments ceased to exist, and some formed separate sports schools. Sports commentator Roman Skvortsov, President of the Russian Facesketball Federation Sergey Chernov, as well as many Russian sports stars graduated from Trinta. In 2012, 36 pupils and 3 coaches of the school were included in the list of candidates for various national teams of Russia.

    Alina Semenova

    school student

How to apply: I found myself unexpectedly in Trinta. In the 4th grade, I was the tallest among my classmates. Once, during recess, two women came up to me and asked if I liked basketball and would like to play it. I was not at all interested in it, but at that moment I became very curious and wanted to try myself in this sport. The women were coaches from Trinta who travel to schools in search of future students. That same evening I got a call from the school, and the next day I was already on my way to my first training session.

Every child can enter Trinta. Coaches come to schools, watch children and offer to play basketball. In addition, screenings are also held in Trint itself. The main thing here is compliance with physical requirements - in terms of growth, speed, agility and endurance.

Also very important is the ability to work in a team, the desire to learn how to play beautifully and great patience.

In our team, there were cases when players received serious injuries, it even came to operations, after which they had to recover, not train for a long time, and then start everything almost from scratch.

Study VS training: You can study according to the general education program both at Trint and at your own school. The guys who study in ordinary schools have classes in the first half of the day, and training in the second. There are more trainings in sports classes - they take place before and after classes in general education subjects. Teams often leave for training camps or games in other cities and miss school. However, after that they have to make up for everything, because the coaches strictly monitor their school performance. I know that the guys who studied at Trint later became students of Moscow State University, RANEPA, National Research University Higher School of Economics, Russian University of Economics. Plekhanov and, of course, RSUPC.

Sports basketball, figure skating, swimming, dancesport, modern pentathlon
Benefits one of the largest sports and training bases in the country; athletes studying here are part of the Sochi 2014 experimental team and successfully participate in competitions as part of Moscow and Russian national teams

Requirements: it is necessary to pass the standards for admission control digits

The school, named after the great basketball coach Alexander Gomelsky, was created relatively recently - in 2006. It was one of the few in Moscow and the only school in the North-Eastern District of the capital with a basketball department for girls. At the first stages, in addition to basketball, there were swimming and gymnastics departments. Two years later, on the initiative of the then mayor of Moscow, Yuri Luzhkov, and the president of the Moscow Figure Skating Federation, Irina Raber, figure skating began to gain momentum here. Last year, a department of modern pentathlon was opened. Today, the educational and sports complex includes one general education school and five specialized sports schools, as well as departments of sports improvement and higher sportsmanship - in figure skating and basketball. In addition, there is a sports and recreation complex with a swimming pool and an ice palace.

    Natalia Mukhina

    school student

How to apply: I go in for figure skating at MSSUOR, where I study. I came to watch, they took me first to the skating rink, and then to school. The requirements for all athletes are strict here, I think it's the same everywhere. After graduating from MSSUOR, I plan to enter a university and continue my sports career.

Study VS training: There is no reason to complain about the teaching of general education subjects, the teachers are good, they also teach very well. Just like in other sports schools with a unified educational and sports program, trainings are set at such a time that we have time to study and train. Education in ordinary schools, combined with training at MSSUOR, is also practiced here, in the morning schoolchildren go to their schools, and in the evening to train with us.

Sports sambo, boxing, sumo, karate, judo, gymnastics, sports dancing
Benefits is one of the largest educational and sports complexes in Europe; almost all popular types of martial arts; the opportunity to enter with a minimum level of training, subject to availability; a chance in the future to get a job in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSB

Requirements: Desire to go in for sports and lack of medical contraindications for playing sports, there are no standards or requirements for physical parameters

The martial arts school was opened by the first world sambo champion David Rudman in 1970. Trainings are held here in seven sports, including not only martial arts, but also gymnastics. Sambo-70 has one sports school, two general education schools, as well as a suburban sports complex, which began operating in March of this year in the south-west of the capital.

The famous judo fan Vladimir Putin attended the opening, accompanied by actor Steven Seagal, seventh dan in aikido.

Among the coaches of "Sambo-70" sports stars are the champions of Russia and the world in karate, sambo, judo, kyokushinkai, kumite and sumo. In the event that school graduates eventually decide to end their sports career, Sambo-70 provides them with the opportunity to go to work in the special units of the Federal Security Service and the Ministry of Internal Affairs - for many years the school has been cooperating with sports units of key law enforcement agencies of the country.

    Vladislav Dubovik

    school student

How to enter: My first attempt to get into Sambo-70 in early childhood failed because of the large number of people who wanted to study there. I entered there only when I was a fifth grader, and before that I went to a regular school and at the same time to training. My coach was sambo and judo champion Elena Guseva, she taught and still teaches at Sambo-70.

Study VS training: Students of ordinary schools who attend Sambo 70 for training sometimes skip classes and go to the gym, where they diligently prepare for competitions. Those guys who study here have their own schedule, where it is distributed, when are the lessons, and when are the trainings. According to the general education program, Sambo trains no worse than other schools, there are good teachers here, I had no difficulties mastering the program.

    team
    Sports football
Benefits preliminary preparation for applicants; high-quality sports equipment; the opportunity to play in a famous football club and get into the

Requirements: must pass a special screening held at the school every three months for children aged 9 to 12. Certificates from a doctor about admission to football, as well as a sports uniform are required. For young athletes from 13 to 19years, viewings are organized by invitation - to do this, you need to download a questionnaire on the official website of the school, fill it out and send it to the selection service.

One of the best football schools in the country is engaged in targeted physical and sports training of players for the main team of the Moscow football club Lokomotiv, as well as for the Russian national teams, both youth and adults.

Among the school's star graduates are Spartak midfielder Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, Dynamo forward Alexander Kokorin, and Lokomotiv Moscow defender Taras Burlak.

The educational institution is located on the territory of the Lokomotiv stadium and has indoor arenas, playing fields with natural and artificial turf, as well as a multifunctional sports complex. There is also a secondary school on the territory of the stadium. For non-resident students, and there are about 40 of them in the school, there is a special boarding school.

    Ivan Krinochkin

    school student

How to enter: The desire to get into the Lokomotiv football school appeared when I was in the 4th grade. But they took me there only from the 5th grade, so I had to wait another year and then go there. Only Lokomotiv football players study at our school, if you are accepted into the team, then they will be accepted to the school without any problems. I would not say that there are any special requirements for the guys in terms of physical indicators - prove on the field that you are able to play, and everything will be fine. While I'm training here. In the future, of course, I would like to get into the youth squad, and from there to the main team. I will try very hard to achieve this.

Study VS training: In Lokomotiv, school education is combined with training. The schedule is designed so that we can do everything. Honestly, it is no different from general educational institutions. Yes, there are concessions for us, but small ones. We take exams just like everyone else. There are guys who study in ordinary schools and periodically ask for time off to get to training with us.

    Sports football
Benefits attempts to prepare young people for the career vicissitudes of a professional football player; strong female soccer

Requirements: for children 6-12 years old - no medical contraindications for playing sports, for children 14 years old - the need to pass a screening at school. Coaches pay attention to the technique of working with the ball and the speed of decision-making.

Along with Lokomotiv, Chertanovo has been preparing young blood for Russian professional football for more than 30 years. The center includes an Olympic reserve children's and youth sports school for boys and girls, a general education school with a boarding school and a health center. There is also an amateur club and a women's football team, which plays in the first division of the country's championship among women's clubs. Chertanovo tries to prepare students who want to play football seriously for the career ups and downs that await them - communication with agents, concluding contracts, and also recommends football team breeders.

    Olga Zlatkovskaya

    school student

How to apply: I got into the Chertanovo football school quite by accident. My future coach at that time, Tatyana Bikeikina, recruited girls to join her team, and reached our school, where we met. Since then, I can’t live a day without football, for which I am very grateful to her. Previously, to get into the school, you just had to play for the team.

Over time, our school has managed to establish itself and getting there is not so easy now.

In Chertanovo, boys and girls from other cities come to watch, they are provided with housing at a sports base, they are provided with a place in a general education class. They try to transfer Muscovites to our comprehensive school, but there are exceptions.

Study VS training: After classes, training sessions are held almost every day, games are usually done in their free time, so combining sports and education is quite simple and convenient. For "Chertanovo" I played 9years old, and graduated from school with a good student, teachers and coaching staff provided me with all the necessary knowledge. I also still play football, only for a different team, I'm a 3rd year student at RSUPEKSMiT, I plan to get a sports higher education and also raise little champions.

The Sparta Education Center was opened in the late 1980s. Today it includes the Greco-Roman wrestling Olympic reserve children's and youth sports school, a general education school with a sports bias, and a college of physical culture. There are three sports halls and a shooting range, the sites and facilities of several Moscow schools and the Olympic Village-80 sports complex are also used. Various athletes study and train at Sparta, despite the fact that the main profile is Greco-Roman wrestling. "Sparta" cooperates with many metropolitan universities of sports and pedagogical orientation: Moscow State Pedagogical University, Moscow State Educational Institution. Krupskaya, MIFKIS, MFPA, RGUFKSIT and MGPI.

How to apply: My teammates and I decided to enter Sparta on the recommendation of girls who had already studied there. They praised the school very much. The five of us went to try our luck. In the end, everyone did. Sparta is an ideal school for those who are ready to train hard and hard.
