Find an area where you can lay out materials and do some hands-on construction.

Additional information

Materials:

• A wire hanger. It cannot be a partially metal hanger made substantially of wood or plastic.
• A large, flat piece of cardboard.
• The tape of your choosing. Masking tape may be the easiest to work with; duct tape would certainly make the hoop durable.
• Markers or paint.
• Scissors.
• String (optional).

Instructions:

1. Bend the wire hanger into a circle. You do not even have to dismantle the hanger, but just reshape it into a hoop.
2. Bend the hook of the hanger so that it is at a 90 degree angle with the hoop. Do not cut away the hook, as it still can be of some use.
3. Cut the cardboard to the size and shape of your liking. Standard high school, college, and NBA backboards are rectangular, if you are looking to replicate that appearance. Try to make sure the relative scale of the hoop and backboard seem reasonable. For comparative purposes, an NBA backboard is 6 feet wide, while the basket opening is 18 inches (1.5 feet). That means the basket width is 1/4 (or 25%) as wide.
4. Decorate the hoop and backboard to your liking. Traditional hoops are painted red, but you can certainly customize it to fit whatever you desire. The backboard of most high schools, colleges, and all NBA franchises are now made of transparent glass; as there is no transparent cardboard, you can really be as creative as you want.
5. Tape the hoop to the backboard. You can attach the hook (which you bent up earlier) to lower back side of the backboard. Make sure the rim is as close to the backboard as possible.
6. Attach a net to the basketball rim (optional). You can make make a net out of string, or even out of twisted tape.
7. Hang the completed basket to a wall or door. Masking tape will work well for this purpose, as it will not leave a sticky mess behind like duct tape would. There are two different taping methods you can employ.

Tips for Supporting Your Children's Learning

Get your child actively involved in their own learning and having their questions drive the learning. Let them observe and figure out, and try to hold back from answering questions for them. Instead, try to ask: What do we know? What else can we find out? How might we figure that out? DIY an over-the-door basketball hoop with wood backboard.

I love my kids.

I don’t love all the kid stuff.

It is rarely aesthetically pleasing, but I can fix that – this one time.

My son has an over-the-door basketball hoop that is fun to use, but not super easy on the eyes.

For the record, I have no one but myself to blame for this eyesore. I’m the one who purchased the over-the-door basketball hoop for him.

The things we do for our kids.

Here’s how we took an over-the-door basketball hoop and gave it the full court press a makeover with a wood backboard.

It’s a total SLAM DUNK!

Here is the step-by-step tutorial.

Wood Backboard Step 1:

Use an over-the-door basketball hoop

that has a detachable backboard.

You need to be able to unscrew and reattach the door hook and rim to the new backboard you are going to create.

Wood Backboard Step 2:

Use the old backboard as a template to cut a new backboard out of wood. If needed, sand the backboard smooth.

Since your power tools are out, you may want to use this opportunity to at least pre-drill the holes where the over-the-door hardware and rim will reattach. However, depending on how you are finishing the backboard you may not want to reattach everything until you are all done.

Wood Backboard Step 3:

Here’s the fun part! Pick your backboard design. There are a million different ways you could choose to finish the backboard. Paint it. Stain it. Make it your team colors.

I chose to stain the backboard a warm honey color, but leave the rectangle or shooter’s square a natural wood color.

In order to prevent the stain from bleeding through to the rectangle that I wanted to keep natural, I taped off the rectangle. Normally, I’d use painter’s tape for this, but I didn’t have any on hand in the correct width, so I used hockey stick tape

. Hence, the skull and crossbones! It worked though.

Then I used a utility knife

to score around the taped off area. This creates a little ditch, of sorts, to stop the stain from running into the taped off area. It’s not foolproof, but it’s the best technique I’ve come up with.

Very carefully use a small paintbrush to “paint” a small amount of stain right up to the scored line. Wipe excess away with a cloth or paper towel. Be careful to wipe away from the tape. Then stain the rest of the backboard as you normally would.

I used two coats of stain and kept the tape on until I was done applying the second coat of stain.

Wood Backboard Step 4:

Reattach hardware and rim to backboard, hang over the door, and start playing!

Simple as that.

My son is 9 years old and he doesn’t have strong feelings on decorating.

This project was ALL for me since I walk by this basketball hoop, which is hanging on the door to our attic, multiple times a day.

What my son really cares about is having someone to shoot hoops with in the house. I’m that someone and this is one game I am happy to play over and over…until he starts regularly beating me.

P.S. If you just wanted to paint your backboard, you could do that without having to cut a wood backboard. Just make sure you use paint or primer that adheres to plastic.

Do-it-yourself basketball hoop for children

Basketball is a great game, and the yard version is the most democratic kind of sport. It can be played by a team of 6-8 people or by yourself practice throwing.

A basketball hoop installed in the backyard or in the yard is sure to gather fans of this sport around. Moreover, often homemade product is better than purchased options , since the age, height, and preferences of the players are taken into account.

It can be much stronger and more durable than store-bought . And a person receives much more moral satisfaction from a hand-made ring.

How to make a basketball backboard with your own hands

First, you need to decide which ring you want to get in the end. Just a basket with a wall or tree mount, or a complete shield complete with everything you need. Then - choose a place to install the shield and prepare the site. Next - break down the work into stages.

Tools and materials

• jigsaw for metal;
• hacksaw for wood;
• drill or hammer drill;
• adjustable wrenches;
• paint and brush.

To make the ring, you can use thick steel wire , with a diameter of at least 5 mm , iron strip or old hula hoop . It will have to be shortened a little in the future. For the manufacture of the shield, plywood will be used, at least 5 mm thick . If the shield will be installed in the yard, then a strong pole is provided for support.

On the ring there must be a net : after the ball hits the target, it will direct it straight down, and not to any corner of the court. It takes 9 to craft.0005 long cord.

Then with another segment in a circle, tie all the ropes, and so several times with an interval of 5-6 cm. Net is ready.

The shield is sawn with a jigsaw or hacksaw after marking with a pencil. After that, the product can be painted.

Important! The black stripes and the square above the basket on the shield must be 5 cm wide otherwise they will simply not be visible.

After the paint has dried, you can attach a ring to the shield, and fix the shield itself to a pole or wall. The rate and type of fasteners depends on what the ring was made of and how the shield will be attached. The main thing is to calculate so that the design can withstand at least 40-50 kg of load.

Home Mount

If the ring is made from round wire , and its ends are bent down, then they can be pulled to the shield with 2 bolts connected by a metal plate in the area of ​​​​the caps.

If the ring is made from a wide iron strip , then you must first bend the ends so that the strip fits snugly against the shield.

Such a product is also fastened with bolts threaded through pre-drilled holes in the strip and plywood.

If shield is not available and the ring is to be attached directly to the wall, anchors can be used instead of bolts . In this case, you will need a hammer drill to make holes in the wall.

To a tree or wooden post , the ring can be nailed with 100 mm nails or screwed with long screws.

Attention! Whatever type of fastening is used, one thing unites them - it is necessary to put the ring on a horizontal level. If it hangs crooked, then the ball will slide off the edges past the basket.

After the shield and ring are fixed, the site is prepared. It should not have stones, puddles, and protruding stumps. Basketball is a very traumatic sport and players do not need any extra risk at all, they will stumble over a bush, stump or stone sticking out on the court. If the ring is installed indoors, then before playing , you need to make sure that everything that breaks easily is hidden, and the glass on the windows is securely protected.

Which ring is better, homemade or purchased. There is no definite answer here. Homemade product performs sporting functions and is more aesthetically pleasing than for family members and friends of the manufacturer.

4. diameter of a bar or a pipe for a ring — 16-20 mm;
5. distance from the ring to the shield - 15 cm;
6. mesh length - 40-45 cm;
7. mesh material - metal chain, synthetic cord, rope, braid.

Types of basketball hoops

Hoops can be different:

• metal with anti-vandal nets made of metal chain;
• metal with rope mesh;
• plastic with nets of various types of materials;
• creative (from the remains of construction, from old furniture, from large plastic containers).

The construction of a metal bar ring begins with marking. Since the basket must have an internal diameter of 45 cm, a rod or pipe is selected based on this.

Material length is calculated using the formula:

Bar length = Circle diameter x 3.14 (pi value). We have 45 × 3.14 = 141.3 cm. diameter and straighten with a mallet. The rest of the rod or pipe should be prepared for fastening to the shield using drilled holes and screws.
