How to make a jv basketball team

The Definitive Guide to Making the Junior Varsity (JV) Basketball Team

The Definitive Guide to Making the Junior Varsity (JV) Basketball Team

For many aspiring basketball players, making the school team is the first step in that journey.  And while making the junior varsity (JV) team may feel nerve-wracking, it doesn’t have to be.  Below, we’re going to provide you with the definitive guide to making the junior varsity (JV) basketball team.

While making the basketball team is not easy, there are a few steps you can take to better your chances.  However, above all else, if you want to make your junior varsity’s basketball team, you need to be willing to put in the time, effort, and practice to prove yourself.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Above all else, in order to make it to your junior varsity’s basketball team, you will need to put in the hard work.  This means that you will need to practice your basketball skills on a daily basis.

While you may hear differing pieces of advice and the level of time-commitment needed, we believe that practicing daily for one-hour will help you to not only refine your basketball skills but will also help you to hone your shooting, dribbling, passing, and rebounding skills.

While the level of competition at the junior varsity level isn’t as tough as in the varsity league, you will still be competing against other players who are willing, and have been, putting in the additional time to the sport.  If you want to give yourself a good shot at making the junior varsity team, then you too will need to put in the time.

Practice Against Other Players

While practicing by yourself is a great first step, you will also want to test your skills in real-world settings.  Basketball is, after all, a team sport.  And the only way to get better is to play with and against other players.

Now, you may be tempted to play against younger or less skilled players.   While still good practice, we would advise playing against players whose skill levels are higher and better than your own.  Not only will this allow you to develop your own game, but it will also allow you to learn differing techniques, plays, and fundamentals from them.

Work on Your Dribble

At the junior varsity level, many other players have not fully developed their dribbling and ball handling skills.  Either due to a lack of confidence or effort, these players are doing themselves a disservice and are not fully developing all aspects of their game and potential.

To help yourself make the middle school team, you should look to practice your dribble and ball handling skills.  Work on your dribble with both your dominant and non-dominant hands and learn simple crossover moves.  These skills will translate well on the court and will help you to be a better ballhandler.

Develop a Deadly Shot

Whether you are looking to play the center position or the point guard one, you should have a refined shooting ability and style.   This can be from any point on the court and need not necessarily be from beyond the three-point line.

Rather, if you can develop and refine an accurate, quick, and efficient shot, you will be able to help your team win more games.  At the end of the day, coaches are looking for players to help their team’s win and having a deadly shot can do just that.

Similarly, you may consider practicing your shot on a double-rimmed hoop. Double-rimmed hoops are more difficult to shoot on due to their added thickness and practicing on those rims will help you develop a better shot on single-rimmed hoops.

Get a Coach or Mentor

If you are able to, get some assistance from a professional coach or an older mentor.  There are many aspects of the game that you will have yet to learn.  However, a coach or mentor will be able to walk you through the fundamentals and help you to develop your offensive and defensive abilities.

While a professional coach may be expensive, you can instead opt to enlist the help of an older athlete.   Whether a family member or close family friend, this mentor can help guide you through the basketball motions and drills and teach you the fundamentals.

Work on Your Endurance

Basketball is a game of endurance, and while speed can play a role in the game, it is oftentimes better to have stamina throughout all four-quarters.  If you are looking to join your middle school basketball team, then working on your cardiovascular endurance will give you a leg-up against the competition.

There are a multitude of ways that you can build up your endurance.  One way is to run a quarter of a mile and time how long it took you to complete.  Then, the next day do the same quarter of a mile run but try to beat the previous days’ time.

Similarly, you can run a quarter of a mile one day and then look to run half a mile the next day.  Keep adding distance each day, until you are able to run multiple miles with ease and without getting too fatigued or exhausted.

Lastly, a simple way to build your endurance is to run full-court drills.  On a basketball court, dribble the basketball up-and-down the court ten times.  Rest for five-minutes and repeat.  Continue to do so until exhaustion.  The next day, run the same drill but try to add one more rep and beat the number of reps you did the day before.

Give it Your All in Practice

Don’t let all that training go to waste during a practice session.  Be sure to bring out you’re A-game and give it your all.  Be visible both on and off the court.  Make smart, calculated plays.  Don’t forget, you can be an integral part of the team even without the ball.  Playing good defense, making screens, hustling for a rebound, and making smart passes will all get you noticed by the coaching staff.

Be Early and Leave Late

If you’re committed to your basketball dream and to making it on the junior varsity team, then you need to be willing to make it to practice and the tryouts early.   This not only shows professionalism but also shows commitment and a willingness to play.

In addition, don’t be the first person to leave.  Stay after practice and work on your shooting skills, your dribbling abilities, and your cardio strength.

Wear Proper Basketball Attire

You wouldn’t show up to school in your pajamas, so why would you show up to a junior varsity basketball tryout in anything but correct and proper basketball attire?

Be sure to not only have a full basketball uniform, including shorts and a jersey, but also proper basketball shoes and socks.

Don’t forget, always dress to impress do so in a manner that gets you taken seriously.

Hustle at All Times

Too often, whether in the younger or more professional leagues, players will simply stand around waiting for the ball to come to them.

Good basketball players don’t wait for the ball to come to them, rather they create opportunities for themselves and their teammates.   Whether on offense or defense, hustle through each play and make each play an opportunity to impress.

Speak to the Coaches

While practicing your basketball skills is important, you should also look to learn and glean information from the coaches and the coaching staff.

Be sure to introduce yourself to each coach individually.  Ask them for feedback and listen to their advice.  Show maturity and real growth by working on the aspects of your game that they gave feedback on.

Don’t Forget Your Academics

While making the junior varsity basketball team may be your goal, you should remember that most school’s require minimum grades in order to be eligible for the team.

Make sure you continue to do your schoolwork and maintain a grade point average to remain eligible for the team.  You should learn good time-management skills and learn how to juggle both school and extracurricular activities.

Don’t Give Up!

If you don’t make it to the junior varsity basketball team, you shouldn’t give up or stop trying.

Remember, famously, Michael Jordan himself didn’t make the varsity team at his high school.  But, instead of giving up, he worked harder and committed himself to getting better.

If you don’t make the team, simply work harder, and prove yourself the next year.

Also know, can freshmen make JV? Although the intensity of the JV team may vary from place to place, most junior varsity teams consist of players who are in their freshman and sophomore years in school, though occasionally upperclassmen may play on JV teams. If you chose to play J.V. basketball, that’s already a bad sign. … If you’re playing an average team, the sweet spot should somewhere around 34% – 59% of your total effort.

Furthermore, how likely is it for a freshman to make varsity? Odds of a US High School Male Athlete playing College: Overall a little over 7% of high school athletes (about 1 in 13) go on to play a varsity sport in college and less than 2% of high school athletes (1 in 57) go on to play at NCAA Division I schools.Varsity team has the more skilled, faster, and stronger players than JV team. It is the varsity team that gets a chance to represent the institution. Varsity team is made up of 11th grade and 12th grade students whereas JV teams are made up of sophomores and freshmen.

Varsity is the big show. The premier level of high school sports. It’s the biggest and best players the school has to offer, often being mostly seniors, juniors, and exceptional sophomores and rarely tremendously talented freshmen.

Is making varsity basketball hard?

The tryouts themselves are not hard but in order to become the “potential” that they are looking for, it is difficult. My best advice is to get explosive, lose weight, and try to beat everyone at the park. Then showcase your athleticism to the coaches, and you’ll have a much higher chance of making it onto the team.

How do you tryout for basketball?

  1. #1 Practice and Prepare.

  2. A t-shirt, jersey, or singlet that isn’t binding. Favor sleeveless tops to allow your arms the maximum freedom of movement.

Is it hard to make varsity basketball as a freshman?

All things considered, making a Varsity team as a freshman requires dedication. However, it can absolutely be done, as proven by the above athletes, and the level of difficulty in making a team depends on the year and on the sport itself.

Can a freshman date a senior?

There’s no law against seniors dating freshmen. However, there are laws that have to be considered regarding sexual contact with people under the age of consent. If one person is below the age of consent, it doesn’t matter if they say they give their consent; legally speaking, they’re unable to do so.

Is it rare for a freshman to play varsity?

Most varsity spots are reserved for upperclassmen, so freshman making varsity is rare. In order to make varsity, freshman must be advanced in the sport. During tryouts, people are evaluated based on different components in the sport.

Southern Federal University | Press Center: Congratulations to Rostov-Don-Southern Federal University on its 15th anniversary!

Basketball club "Rostov-Don-YUFU" celebrates its fifteenth anniversary

Rostov-Don Basketball Club was founded on February 16, 2006 in Rostov-on-Don. In 2014, the club entered into an agreement with the Southern Federal University and changed its name to Rostov-Don-Southern Federal University.

“Southern Federal University is inextricably linked with sports. SFedU trains highly qualified specialists in physical culture and sports, conducts scientific research in this area, develops and popularizes student sports and sports of high achievements. Today SFedU supports professional handball and basketball clubs. On February 16, the Rostov-Don-YUFU basketball club celebrates its fifteenth anniversary. More than five years ago, an agreement was signed between the university and the club. The team of the club achieves great sports success. We are proud of their victories and try our best to help and support the club. 80% of the team consists of students and graduates of the Southern Federal University ,” said Inna Shevchenko, rector of SFedU .

During its 15 years, Rostov-Don-YUFU has become the winner and prize-winner of Russian championships more than once. So in the 2019-2020 season, for the third time in a row and the fourth time in history, the club took first place in Super League-1 and made its debut in the European Women's Basketball League (EWBL), becoming the owner of the bronze medals of the tournament.

The day before, on February 15, 2021, in the match against the Ivanovo club Energia, the Rostov basketball players broke their own record and scored 23 victories in a row.

Throughout almost the entire history of the club, the Donetsk team played in the Russian national team and brought home gold, silver and bronze medals from European and world sports forums.

SFedU President Marina Borovskaya is also the President of the Rostov-Don-SFedU Basketball Club.

Director General of Basketball Club Elena Shvaybovich spoke about the formation of Rostov-Don-Southern Federal University.

Tell us a little about the history of the club, how was the idea of its creation born?

In 2003, together with my husband and small children, I moved to Rostov-on-Don. At that time, her husband was a member of the leadership of the Lokomotiv-Rostov basketball team. Of course, initially I did not know anyone in a foreign city and was completely occupied with raising children, then I got acquainted with the local basketball community, sports school No. 7 - the only basketball school in the city. Its graduates, especially girls, had an acute question about the further continuation of their sports career in professional clubs. For example, in Orenburg, Yekaterinburg, Moscow, Kursk, the system of training players for their clubs is perfectly built. In Rostov-on-Don, this was a problem. That's why we came up with the idea to create a women's basketball team for girls 1992 years of birth on the basis of sports school №7. Since then we have come a long way from the First League of the Southern Federal District to the Superleague.

Why only women's basketball? Are there any plans to create a men's team?

When the women's team was created, the men's team, Lokomotiv, was already playing in the elite division. For all the time of our fifteen-year existence in Rostov-on-Don, three men's teams managed to stand out: Lokomotiv, Ataman, Barsy. Now it is pointless to create a new men's team.

Tell us about the interaction between SFU and the Club? When and how did they start?

Cooperation agreement between the Rostov-Don Basketball Club and the Southern Federal University was signed on September 1, 2014. This was preceded by the idea of integrating sports clubs into higher education institutions. I am very pleased with this collaboration. The president of the basketball club is Marina Borovskaya, who currently holds the position of president of the SFU. She is very kind to the club, and we have developed professional, but, most importantly, friendly relations with her.

SFedU rector Inna Shevchenko also supports our club and is interested in its life and success.

How many players of the Club are students or graduates of SFU? How can SFedU students become club players? What are the selection criteria? Are there any privileges at the university for admission to the SFU for the players of the Club?

The Rostov-Don-Southern Federal University team consists of 80% students and graduates of the Southern Federal University. Our athletes study not only at the Academy of Physical Culture and Sports, but also at various faculties of the SFedU. Girls enter the university on a general basis. I must say that we select the players of our team very carefully and have been following them since childhood. First, the children play in the Children's Youth Basketball League, then the best continue to play in the team, including when they enter the Southern Federal University.

Are there any joint events with the university (and specifically with AFKiS) and what kind?

From time to time I conduct master classes and meetings with students from various departments of the SFedU, as well as students of the lyceum at the university. Students ask me a lot of questions. They are curious about the life of a professional women's basketball team. This communication is a huge step in creating a target audience and fans of the team, replenishing our basketball family.

Basically, cooperation with the university consists of several important aspects. On the basis of the Academy of Physical Culture and Sports, a survey of the physical, psychological, and functional state of the players is carried out several times a year. We understand how we need to work with players. Coaches use a scientific approach in their work. In the field of writing programs in the direction that the coach needs, we cooperate with the Taganrog departments of the university.

During the pandemic, the club's athletes became volunteers for a while, but in general, how do the Club treat charity and volunteering?

During the pandemic, our team held online workouts that anyone who wanted to get in shape could connect to. Also, understanding the social significance of helping the elderly and people with limited mobility, we joined the action of the All-Russian Popular Front. Young people should always help the elderly, we were given instructions, and we fulfilled them with honor.

I would like to say that "Rostov-Don-Southern Federal University" is a socially oriented club, that is, we pay a lot of attention to the sports lifestyle of children. We conduct master classes in educational institutions and orphanages in the Rostov region. We also patronize orphanages in Luhansk and Donetsk regions. Before the pandemic, pupils from these institutions came to our games.

Which of its current or past athletes is Rostov-Don-YUFU proud of? Why?

Among our pupils there are champions, silver and bronze medalists of European championships, world champions in their age, candidates for the first Russian team. At the moment, four people from BC "Rostov-Don-Southern Federal University" are candidates for different national teams of Russia according to their age. Rostov players are always present in the youth teams of the Russian national team.

The task of the club is not only to educate a quality athlete and player, but also to educate a person with certain life principles. Coaches and administrative staff are working in this direction. We want our pupils to have not only a successful sports career, but also a personal life. We are for the continuity of generations. The children of some graduates of our club are already playing basketball with the sports director of Rostov-Don-YUFU Tatyana Troitskaya and the master of sports, the captain of our team Anna Belyaeva.

What are your plans for celebrating the Club's anniversary and the current sports season?

On the 16th of February BC "Rostov-Don-YUFU" turns 15 years old. For me, every year in the life of the club is valuable, every player and every coach who has worked and is working in the team. I think we will be able to gather all the people involved in this holiday and solemnly celebrate it at the beginning of the next season. I want this to be a holiday for everyone who has been with us during these 15 years.
