Dunking through an opponent is an NBA treasure. Here is a whole study to determine the best of the best - Personal foul - Blogs
In Russian there is a word "poster" in the meaning of "poster, poster". But there is no version of the verb posterize. There is, of course, the expression "put on a poster", but it sounds too dry when it comes to a specific event in a basketball game.
If you watch the NBA with American commentators, then this word is familiar to you. "Posterize" means to score so beautifully that the photo of this process is worthy of being turned into a poster and hung on the wall.
Here is my completely objective and almost scientific classification of posters and posterizations in the NBA.
POSTER BUT NOT DUNK
Some moments are good enough to be put on a poster, even though no one even scores from above. This is only for the chosen ones. For example, I have a photo of Michael Jordan's decisive shot in the final-19 hanging on my wall98. Michael in red uniform, everyone else is discolored, the hopes of hundreds of people are about to be shattered into pieces - the poetry of sports in one shot. I can quite imagine how a photograph of LeBron James' block shot on André Iguodala in the 2018 finals or Dennis Rodman's jump after the ball in a horizontal position hangs on the wall.
DUNK BUT NOT A POSTER
The true, canonical poster is an overhead throw over a defender who is trying to prevent this dunk. He will be "posterized". But there were also such throws from above that were worthy of a place on the wall and without the poor defender.
The king of these posters was "Chocolate Thunder" Darryl Dawkins. He broke the shields and tore off the rings, for which he received a warning from the commission agent that he would be fined 5,000 dollars for each new broken shield.
“Dawkins is the father of power dunks. I am just one of his sons. Possibly the best son. Guess whose quote? Yes, it's Shaq. He doesn’t have so many posters through people, because, apparently, when he went to the ring, there was no one left who could or wanted to stop him. But O'Neal had a recognizable silhouette of a dunk with wide legs apart, worthy of a poster.
Although when the opponent still tried to resist Shaq, the dunks turned out to be very juicy. My favorites are the sledgehammer through Alonzo Morning, the tomahawk through David Robinson and, of course, the humiliation of Chris Dudley.
This dunk could technically be considered a posterization, but Dudley was so bad at obstructing his opponent that a good shot didn't come out of the moment. The episode should be in the Most Disrespectful Dunks Hall of Fame, but the posterization? As for me - no.
In 2010, Dudley ran for Governor of Oregon and lost 1% to his opponent. Surely the poster from Shaquille played a key role in this.
POSTER BUT NOT TOTALLY DUNK
Here we are talking about posterizations with photogenic resistance from the defender. Why "not quite a dunk"? Because this is a borderline category, when a dunker does not touch the ring with his palm, throwing the ball into the ring in handball.
In this category the king for me is Blake Griffin with posters through Timofey Mozgov and Kendrick Perkins.
Throw through Mozgov will always be a reference posterization for me, because
- I watched that match live
- Griffin then scored a record 44 points for himself
- a Russian took part in the moment
- Mozgova's surname entered NBA folklore as a synonym for posterization
Oklahoma's Kevin Durant also features prominently in this category, as he adds points to the fact that his moment came in the Western Conference Finals against Dallas.
REAL POSTERS
The history of true posters is the history of the best dunks in NBA history. A cool poster consists of several elements.
1) Famous performers
For example, Julius Irving through Bob Gross in the 1977 final is beautiful.
“When you look at this, you think: “What for? Why even try? But you have to give credit to his courage. Well, or a lack of intelligence, ”Steve Kerr laughed.
But Dr. J through Bill Walton... This is already a historical poster.
Or Dominic through a random victim - this is a regular Tuesday, but Wilkins through Larry Bird ... Well, you get the idea.
2) The reaction of the most dunking
Sean Kemp's dunk through Elton Lister wouldn't be half as good if it wasn't for the cool "Haha, gotcha!" celebration.
Because of this criterion, any modern posterization suffers greatly, since today one cannot celebrate a successful action. The maximum that can be counted on is a dominant look at the defeated enemy.
3) Commentary
This includes "WHAT ARE YOU DOING DRAGIC?!", "WE JUST SAW MAN FLY" and other phrases that make the moment more memorable.
All Sacramento players until recently lost positions under this criterion after posters due to the annoying "If you don't like that, you don't like NBA basketball".
4) Degree of contact
Dominic Wilkins remains the undoubted king here.
“I was always looking for contact in the air. But, despite the contact, I first of all wanted to finish the moment with the points scored,” Wilkins said.
Wilkins "didn't dunk" or "dunked". No, he just worked with meat, with some special cruelty. A nail through Robert Parish is the quintessential hardcore character of Wilkins' dunks.
Contact is important even when the defender is noticeably smaller in size, but adds color to the dunk by his presence.
- Deandre Jordan via Brandon Knight
- LeBron via Jason Terry
- Dwight Howard via Drew Holiday
Underrated in this category: Amar'e Stoudemire (via Richard Jefferson, via Anthony Tolliver).
I don't really like it when a dunker in the air borders on a very close offensive foul, as was the case with Griffin's dunks through Gasol. But here the decision is left to the discretion of the judge.
If an episode with posterization ends with a foul on the part of the defender, then this also benefits the episode, since it becomes possible to take a breath and again evaluate the dunk in the replay on the screen under the arches of the arena (YES, VTB LEAGUE, REPETITIONS SHOULD BE SHOWED ON THE SCREEN).
5) Reaction of other players
In Griffin's dunks just mentioned above, Andrew Bynam's face is the best.
My personal top also includes Mozgov's reaction after Larry Nance's dunk and Stephon Marbury's face after Amare Stoudemire's dunk.
6) Humiliation
Here you need to understand that getting on the poster as a defender (the one through whom they score) is considered insulting and shameful. Therefore, an important factor in the overall impression of the dunk is how humiliating it turned out to be for the blocker.
Bob Lanier is said not to have spoken to Wilkins for six years after the memorable double-clutch dunk.
Grant Hill, for example, was too polite and intelligent for his posters to be perceived as domination and humiliation. Although his dunk through Alonzo Morning is a poster of the highest standard.
Particularly memorable in terms of humiliation are dunks, after which the defender falls on his back, while the attacker remains on his feet and has the opportunity to look down at the defeated opponent.
It's important that it comes naturally - I, for one, sense a bit of false theatricality in the way Dwyane Wade stepped over Anderson Varejao. The dunker also loses points when he goes down (like Nikola Vucevic after dunking through Gasol).
