Coaching Middle School Basketball -- Drills, Plays, Tips, Offenses, Philosophy, Tactics
Coaching middle school basketball presents some unique challenges because your players have SUCH a wide array of talent and experience...
Some players have very little experience and they need youth level drills and coaching. Other players have already played hundreds of games and might even be good enough to play high school basketball. So we'll be sure to provide you with a mix of tips geared for both youth and more advanced levels.
Before digging into the information below, be sure to pick up our free Drills and Plays eBooks (if you haven't already done so). These eBooks serve as a great resource for middle school coaches and all levels.

DVD Resource - Bob Bigelow's Coaching Middle School Basketball The Right Way
Top 10 All-Around Basketball Drills for Middle School Teams
We call these top "all-around" drills because the drills you choose should depend on your coaching philosophy, the offense you use, skill level, and player strengths.
For example, if you run a motion offense, we suggest that you use lots of drills that mimic motion movements from your offense (cuts and screens) while working on skills at the same time (shooting, passing, etc).
Never the less, we're still constantly asked what drills we recommend. So here are our top "all-around" drills for middle school coaches:
- Jump Stop Drill
- Steve Nash Passing Series
- The Multi-Purpose Offense and Shooting Drill
- Fast Break Drill
- Defensive Challenge
- Full Court Press Breaker Drill
- Defense Drill - 1,2,3 Progression
- Chair Changes
- Middle Man Passing
- Reaction Rebounding

Best All Around Advice for Middle School Basketball Coaches
1) Keep things fun!
Don't forget that your young players are there just want to have fun. Don't make the all too common mistake of getting caught up in the pressure of winning.
To keep things fun, young players like to be active and keep moving. So be sure to plan out practices that keep things fast paced and fun. You should minimize standing in lines and use fun drills. (For more ideas, check out this eBook for fun basketball drills and tips to make practice fun.)
2) Allow your players to be successful!
Sometimes competition is not a motivator for young kids. However ALL kids need to taste success (and hopefully lots of it). Now this doesn't mean winning. It means getting better and succeeding in practice. Allow your players to run drills that they can succeed at and feel good about. Celebrate small accomplishments and successes with your players.
3) Don't neglect the inexperienced kids.
You'd be surprised how good some players can become if they just get a chance. I was one of those late bloomers that didn't get interested in basketball until late in school. Many kids just need an opportunity, confidence, and someone that believes in them.
I know it seems that some kids are hopeless, but at this level you should implement a program that gives everyone an equal opportunity to learn fundamentals and skills.
4) Teach life lessons in your practices.
A good reminder of what's important and we can all do a better job with this...
https://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/articles/lifelesson1.html
5) Make sure your players have a solid foundation!
This is a critical time in most player's lives where they really start getting lots of experience and develop habits. This point and time can have a HUGE effect on your player's success when they get into high school and college.
You should teach basic fundamentals and skills that these players can use no matter who is coaching them in the future. You must build a SOLID foundation for these kids to build on. This is better for your players in the long run.
6) Fix shooting form NOW!
If you have players with poor shooting form, take the time to fix them now. I know it's hard to do. But if they don't fix it now, it may never happen.
When correcting shooting mechanics, make sure players practice AWAY from the basket. In other words, have them shoot to a spot on the floor, to a spot on the wall, or to themselves. Do NOT send them to the basket. Because if they don't see the ball going through the hoop, they will think the new form does not work and get discouraged.
7) Focus on the fundamentals.
8) Work with your high school coach (even if you don't like him/her!).
It amazed me how few middle schools run a system that complements the high school program. Swallow your pride and do what's best for your players. You should run a
program that complements the high school coache's system and prepares your players for maximum success.
Arrange some meetings with the school coach. Learn about their system and teach your players fundamentals that will benefit them when they get into
high school. Why in the world should players have to learn a whole new style of play every single year? That doesn't help them. Working with the high school coaches is the right thing to do.

Top 10 Offenses & Plays For Middle School Coaches
- 5 Out Motion Offense - Cutters - Motion offense that was used by State Champs (and it can be taught in ONE day)! It can be used as a delay offense, primary offense, and can be used at any level.
- Michigan - Man Offense - This offense is continuous and has a very simple motion.
- Yo Yo - Zone Offense - This is a very simple zone offense that can be used at any level. It works best against a 2-3 zone.
- Overload - Zone Play - This overload play is simple, but very effective against zone defenses.
- Double - Zone Play - This play works great against any zone defense but works especially well against the 2-3 zone.
- Pitt - Zone Play - If you have a point guard who is a solid decision maker, this play can work at any level. I've seen it used by Pittsburgh against Syracuse's deadly 2-3 zone, and I've used it with 12 year olds as well.
- Quick Hitter Against 1-3-1 Zone - This play can get you an easy lay up against a traditional 1-3-1 zone defense.
- Wide Open Spaces - Inbounds Play - This is an inbounds play against man-to-man defense that creates great shot opportunities and forces the defense to be concerned about the whole court.
- Slice - Sideline Inbounds Play - This sideline inbound play can get your best shooter a wide open jump shot.
- Line - Press Breaker - This press breaker works extremely well against teams that pressure the inbounds pass.

Recommended Products for Middle School Coaches
Here are a few products that we highly recommend for middle school coaches. These products will help you accelerate your teaching of fundamentals and your team's success.
- Coaching Middle School Basketball the RIGHT WAY (By Bob Bigelow) - In this two DVD set Bob Bigelow takes you through a variety of drills, fundamentals, and teaching points specifically targeting coaches that work with players around the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade levels. We highly recommend this DVD. It gives you excellent ideas on how to run offense, teach fundamentals, and drills to run.
- Footwork and Post Player Development - One of the most important things to teach players is proper footwork. Yet few coaches know how to teach footwork properly. Tim Duncan, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and countless superstar players all have ONE THING in common -- they have superb footwork. Teaching proper footwork will take your players a long way in their development. We highly recommend this book because it demonstrates footwork brilliantly and simplifies the teaching process.
- Developing a High Scoring Motion Offense - We highly recommend motion offense for middle school coaches because of its versatility, effectiveness, and because it teaches kids "how to play". One of the best things about a motion offense is that you work on fundamental skills while practicing the offense. This allows you to get more done in less time and also improves player development. This is what we recommend to all youth and middle school coaches.
- Developing High Percentage Shooters - In addition to footwork (which is an important aspect of shooting), developing a great shooting stroke is very important for young kids. In this book you will discover concepts you never knew existed. This product is the most comprehensive shooting resource available today -- partly because it was developed by a group of 8 experts, 6 of which are some of the greatest shooting coaches in the world. We guarantee this book will help you develop better shooters and increase your team's shooting percentage.
- Developing a Tough Man to Man Defense - When it comes to defense we strongly recommend man to man defense. From a development standpoint, there are numerous advantages to a man defense, which you can read about here. If you'd like the quickest and most effective step by step method to teach defense, check out this book.
- Fun Youth Drills and Games - This is a very popular product that youth and middle school coaches really appreciate. We recommend this product because it will make practices more for fun for you and your players. And making practice fun is one of the best ways to motivate and get more done!

8 Tryout Tips Guaranteed to Get You Noticed (And What To Avoid So You Don't Get Cut)
Do you know exactly what the coach is looking for in tryouts? Do you know everything you need to do?
You may think that you do, but its highly unlikely.
Actually, what you think would help with tryouts may be the exact reason you get cut from the team. Sad thing is that Ive seen players like you make these critical mistakes over and over and over again.
Ive been fortunate to conduct tryouts for youth clubs with over 400 kids. Ive also been part of high school varsity tryouts with 100 kids for a state championship caliber team at the high school level.
Im able to give you the critical tips that can help you make the team and avoid those mistakes that get you cut.
Like this article? Download it as a free PDF! (Download Now!)
1. Do what you do well.
One of the biggest mistakes you can make is trying to impress the coach by doing things that are outside your skill set. This often results in a disaster for you.
If you are a good rebounder, grab every rebound.
If you are a good shooter, shoot when you are open.
If you are a good finisher, attack the basket when a lane is open.
If you are a good ball handler, make the simple passes, the simple moves.
If you are not a good 3-point shooter, dont step out and shoot one during tryouts. Ive seen kids literally hit the side of the backboard trying to do this.
The coach will instantly think, Wow. This kid does not know a thing about shot selection. Maybe hes a low IQ kid.
Trust me... with the limited time that a coach can see you. .. this is not the impression you want to make. Even if you play great the rest of the time, the coach already has impression about you and thats hard to change.
Here is a good measure... can you make 7 out of 10 shots unguarded from a spot. Maybe 6 out of 10 for youth players. If not, dont take the shot at tryouts.
2. Hustle! Hustle! Hustle!
There is no excuse for any player on this one. You just have to commit and develop that mentality.
When the ball is on the floor, dive on the floor. Box out on every shot. Sprint on the fast break. Sprint to spots on the floor on defense.
Communicate on defense and offense. Be loud and do it often.
These are things that every player can do and every player should do.
This is why you see players who arent skilled make the team. Theyre willing to do the little things that make teams good or great.
3. Dont be just one of the guys in the crowd - Make a great first impression.
Here is a great way to make a first impression.
When the coach calls everybody in at the beginning of the first tryout...
Instead of walking out there or jogging out there like every other kid.
Sprint! Sprint directly to the coach and stand right in front of him. Stand tall and keep eye contact on the coach during the entire talk.
I guarantee youll have the coachs attention. Ive conducted tryouts. Ive been in rooms with coaches discussing who to cut. This makes a difference.
Your buddies may give you some crap, but youll be the one laughing when you make the team or get more playing time than them.
4. Avoid the amazing play mentality. Do something that makes you stand out in a positive way.
This is not what you think. This is not making an amazing play. Remember... do what you do well.
Flashy doesnt impress coaches. It may look cool on the playground, but thats why you dont see NBA guys doing streetball moves during games. Its flash. Its hype. Its not effective against good players.
You should do something with substance that coaches will notice in a positive way.
Earlier, I mentioned communicate on defense.
One time when I was conducting a tryout for 3rd to 8th graders, we were with the 4th grader session.
All of the sudden, across the gym, I hear a blaring yell Screen! Screen! Screen! It was from this little guy named Tommy.
Ten seconds later, I hear Tommy yell again, I got ball!
This continued the whole day. He communicated early. He communicated loud. He communicated often. (ELO Early Loud Often. Kevin Eastman would have been proud.)
There may have been 30 other kids communicating in the gym, but he is the only one I remembered. I didnt know him before the tryouts, but I sure know him now. Guess what... he made the first team.
5. Dont be shy Talk to the coaches before tryouts.
Too many make the big mistake of being too shy to talk to the coach. And this can make a huge difference with making the team.
Sometimes, this simple act will elevate you in the eyes of the coaches because they know that you care and youll do whatever it takes to help the team.
Be specific. Tell the coach that you really want to make the team. Ask them what they need on their team.
6. Be a great teammate Great attitude and sportsmanship
Every coach wants a player who is a great teammate and makes the players better around them.
You can do this by...
Being a great practice player and challenging your teammates during practice to make the team better.
By putting everybody in a better mood with your positive attitude. Lets face it... were all humans and its more enjoyable to have a little fun in life. Nobody wants to be around a person with a poor attitude.
Display great sportsmanship. When a coach sees you helping players off the floor and playing hard but clean basketball, they know that they can count on you not to lose your cool and hurt your team in a negative way at an important time.
7. Get there early / warm up properly.
Getting there early shows the coach that you care and that he can depend on you to show up on time to practices and games.
Also, make sure to warm up prior to playing, so you are playing your best as soon as the whistle blows. First impressions are very important.
8. Who cares if you screw up Next play!
If you make a mistake... oh well, it happens. Everybody makes mistakes.
Always go on to the next play.
The best players react in a positive way to those mistakes and dont let them snowball into a bunch of mistakes.
There are no guarantees in life. However, if you use the tips mentioned above, you will dramatically increase your chances to make the team and earning more playing time.

46 films about basketball
As we all know, basketball is considered one of the most popular and colorful sports. On the site you can observe sports aggression, and a fervent spirit of rivalry, and true friendship, and an incredible understanding of each other's team members from the floor of the word. That's why basketball movies are so exciting.
To pass the long and cold autumn evenings at home, we invite you to get acquainted with the 46 best films about basketball.
-
Space Jam (1996). A family-friendly and entertaining film starring basketball star Michael Jordan. Events tell about cartoon villains who arrived from another planet in the hope of taking possession of the characters of "Looney Toons". Bunny Bugs Bunny invites aliens to play 1 basketball game, the winner of which will get everything.
- His game (1998). The plot is tied to a family drama and conflict between father and son. Not surprising, because 6 years ago a murder was committed - mom dies at the hands of dad. In order to get out of prison before the required 15 years, the father needs to persuade his talented son, a basketball player, to enter a certain university.
- Sixth player (1997). The film is about two brothers who achieved great success in the basketball team while still at school. But suddenly a terrible thing happens - one of them suddenly dies. It seems that everything is already lost, and it is no longer possible to win the school cup. But something strange happens during the first game...

- Coach Carter (2005). The film is based on real events and tells about the main problem of school administration in America. Usually young basketball guys from the street after training are waiting for either a successful career in the NBA or a life of crime outside the home. That is why school leaders have always waved their hand at the future of the new generation. But not Coach Ken Carter. This man single-handedly pulled guys off the street and made them NBA stars. The film will tell about such human qualities as will, fortitude and faith not only in yourself, but also in the people around you.
- Above the ring (1994). Another film about basketball with world legend Tupac Shakur. The plot tells about the high school basketball star, who, like many teenagers, gets into trouble with the law. The adaptation of Jeff Pollack's "Above the Ring" is recognized as one of the best old-school films of our time.
- Find Forrester (2000). The film tells the story of two talented individuals: a young basketball player who has a wonderful and bright future, and a writer who lost his taste for life after the triumph of the book of the same name. A 16-year-old boy is trying to return the meaning of existence to a lost person, and does not notice how his life is changing dramatically. The main idea of the film is to break the stereotype that a talented basketball player is always an illiterate guy from the street.
- Moving up (2017). The plot tells about the events taking place at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. It was then that for the first time the USSR national team won against the invincible Americans. The film is completely based on real events and shows the true stories of basketball players faced with the most important choice in their lives.
- White people can't jump (1992). The action of the film tells about basketball games for money taking place on the streets of a hot Los Angeles. Fate will bring two basketball cheaters who will want to compete in what they know best - the art of deception and the ball game. This picture is as close as possible to the atmosphere of the streets of Los Angeles and conveys realistic events that took place on the sites of the metropolis.
- Game by someone else's rules (2006). The story is about a young coach who recruited black boys for the first time in a basketball team and led them to victory in the Championship. The events are based on a true story and touch on the racial dislike of some Americans towards black people of that time. Even 50 years ago it was believed that only white people know how to play basketball. But the coach of the Texas team proved the opposite to everyone and brought the world sport to a new level.
- Rebound (2005). College basketball coach Roy McCormick is like a fish thrown out of the water onto dry land. He allowed himself a flash of anger during the game and flew out of work. Now he is forced to coach the school team, and his wards are all losers and losers. But Roy is not discouraged - he plans to create a truly great team.
- Love and Basketball (2000). Monica and Quincy have known each other since childhood. Even when they were 11, Quincy was shocked that some girl could play basketball better than most guys. But as time went on, they got older. And in place of friendship came another feeling - love. Unfortunately, this did not last long - Quincy, dreaming of being a famous NBA player like his father, leaves Monica and goes into professional basketball. Basketball, which brought them together, cruelly separated them. But life is not so bad, and it gives them a chance meeting that can make them close and happy again or ... alien and very distant.
- Indiana team (1986). The film is based on the true story of an Indiana Provincial High School basketball team that made it to the state finals in 1954 thanks to an independent-minded coach.
- Lover (2018). Basketball player Terron gets a chance to shine. He is given a place in a prestigious team, where there is everything for development: an excellent coach, training rooms, equipment. But what will Terron have to do to become a professional player?
- Gambling (1994). The coach of a basketball team finds himself in a dilemma: playing his team in the same composition leads to a loss, and attracting new players is impossible without violating existing rules.

- Throw, or it all started on Saturday (1976). Soviet feature film directed by Serik Raibaev, based on the story "The Ability to Throw a Ball" by Kir Bulychev. The protagonist receives as a gift from a mysterious professor the ability to accurately throw objects at a target, from great distances and almost without aiming. The coach of the local Arman basketball club finds out about this and invites him to try his hand at the game.
- Lucky Irish (2001). Kylie Johnson dreamed that he was short and that he and his mother were little elves. Kylie grows pointy ears. To regain his former human form, he must challenge and defeat an evil leprechaun in order to become normal again. Otherwise, he will remain forever a small green creature.
- Like Mike (2002). Fourteen-year-old Calvin Cambridge lives in an orphanage and dreams of becoming a famous basketball player. But there is one problem - Calvin, as they say, "didn't come out tall." However, the boy continues to hope that his dream will come true. One day, a pair of old sneakers falls into his hands, on which the almost erased initials “M.J.” are still visible. Calvin decides that these shoes belonged to the famous player and basketball legend Michael Jordan, and soon he has a chance to see that this old pair is truly magical. Wearing sneakers on his feet, Kevin can make huge thirty-foot jumps.
- Like Mike 2: Streetball (2006). Basketball fan who dreams of becoming a famous professional player. But his tiny stature and very limited abilities make this dream impossible.
- The Eighth Wonder of the World (1981). The heroines of the film are Soviet basketball players taking part in international competitions for the Gera Cup. Exciting basketball fights, the nobility of a Soviet athlete who saved the life of a Greek basketball player, the anxieties of first love - all these and other events make up the plot of the film.
- Air King (1997). Norm was a clown, but he couldn't make anyone laugh. From the complete failure of his performance was saved by the dog Buddy, who did tricks in tandem with a clown. In anger, Norm hit Buddy, and the smart dog ran away from him. Josh, an 11-year-old boy, becomes Buddy's new friend. They meet on the basketball court, where Josh goes to practice in the hope of being accepted into the school team. When Josh saw how Buddy could shoot the ball into the basket, his delight knew no bounds! Training together, friends achieve success: Josh is taken to the team, and Buddy becomes her mascot and favorite of the public. Buddy's former owner finds out about his basketball talent and, dreaming of making money on it, demands the return of the dog...
- Basketball fever (1996). What can you decide on for the victory of your favorite team? For all! - decide Mike and Jimmy on the eve of the final match between their beloved Boston Celtic and Utah Jazz. They take a desperate step and kidnap the best player of the rivals, Lewis Scott, having drunk him half to death in a bar. But things don't go the way they planned...
- Basketball dreams (1994). The true story of two inner-city Chicago teenagers Arthur Edge and William Gates and their quest for NBA glory. Immediately after leaving school, the boys fall into a group of athlete scouts, isolated from the streets, where mostly white teenagers study. Following in the footsteps of their basketball idol Isaiah Thomas, both boys go through a rigorous course of growing up, mastering academics and athletics.
