There’s

No Better Time to cash in on your MVP TRADING CARD investments

Tapping into the nostalgia of breaking open a new set of Panini rookie cards or Topps collectible packs, it’s evident that the resurgence in the sport of buying and selling trading cards is here to stay. There have been several trends that have shaped card collecting over the last decade and with further advancements in technology, such as Investacard’s state-of-the-art program, there will be further trends carrying the industry well into the future. Once labeled just a hobby, the sport of buying and selling trading cards has never been hotter.

Market Overview/Industry Trends

The trading card industry has seen unprecedented

Activity & Growth over the last few years

Record sales, soaring values, and major national media attention. Recently, eBay reported a jump in card sales of nearly two and a half times for 2020 compared to the previous year. Industry trends show that this rise can be tied to several factors. Here are a few that seem to be most prominent.

Mid-Grade Vintage Cards

Even if you don’t have a perfect grade, vintage cards have never been more popular. This means that box of cards in your garage still holds a ton of value.

Local Card Shows

Although most cards are bought and sold online these days, live local card shows still gather the most attention. Local card shows allow fans the opportunity to marvel at classic cards in person, find great deals, and network with other members of the trading card community.

Autographs of Former Legends

As the decades’ pass, so too does the value of former legends that have since passed away. Fans will seek out collectibles of their sporting heroes as a way to honor their memories on and off the playing field. Think of it as owning a piece of artwork from a famous artist. The value will only continue to grow as time passes.

Best Selling Brands

The trading card industry has welcomed a ton of

New Players throughout the years

When first getting started, it can be daunting to try and figure out which brands are best. The three most prominent trading card brands are Panini, Topps, and Upper Deck. Each brand has an exclusive deal with one of the major sports leagues, making it the official trading card for that sport. Panini has recently become one of the most recognizable trading card brands in the world, having signed exclusive deals with the NBA and NFL. Topps continues to be the home for officially licensed MLB cards, while Upper Deck rounds out the trio as the NHL’s official trading card partner.

How the NBA became the biggest entertainment industry on par with movies and music

In April 2021, an unnamed collector purchased a LeBron James shoot video at the NBA Top Shot NFT auction for $387,600. The auction is estimated to have brought its users and the NBA up to $500 million. large organizations capitalizing on the crypto-currency NFT fever is not surprising. Even in the best of times, the league's revenue from match ticket sales amounted to no more than 20% of its budget. The NBA is a huge entertainment industry with its heroes, legends and fanatics; the same pop culture phenomenon as, for example, the Marvel franchise. Basketball in America is inseparable from cinema, fashion, music, the digital revolution, and in itself is like a fascinating series (sometimes literally: The Last Dance documentary, assembled from NBA archival materials and dedicated to the great player Michael Jordan and his team "Chicago Bulls", became an absolute hit last year and collected all possible awards). The NBA is no longer just a sport.

The NBA is a movie

Basketball itself is very cinematic. The heroes here are bright, the plans are big, the matches are full of events - the drama of a tense confrontation can at any moment be replaced by a comedy of an absurd blunder. The players are potential actors: their faces are not hidden by helmets, and they themselves are quite charismatic.

Prior to becoming the goon Bombaata in Conan the Destroyer with Arnold Schwarzenegger (1984), Wilt Chamberlain was an NBA legend who once scored 100 points in a game. Another great center, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, played a variety of roles during his NBA career: here he is the mysterious kung-fu master Hakim, Bruce Lee's rival in The Game of Death (1974), and now the angry co-pilot Roger Murdoch in the parody comedy "Airplane!" (1980). He also played in police dramas (21 Jump Street, 1990), and in horror films ("Confrontation", 1994), and even once starred in a family drama ("Whitepaddy", 2006). Shaquille O'Neal could have been the genie Kazaam (Did They Call the Genie?, 1996) or a superhero (Mr. Steel, 1997), but, of course, he played himself - the big clown Shaq. Dennis Rodman was himself - a jovial freak with hair of strange colors - in The Colony (1997), Superspy Simon (1999), and The Long Jump (2000). When Michael Jordan returned to basketball in 1996, three light basketball comedies came out at once: Eddie with Whoopi Goldberg, Basketball Fever with Dan Aykroyd, and Space Jam itself, in which it turned out that Jordan’s loud and triumphant return evil aliens and painted rabbits had a hand.

In fact, the film industry and the NBA have always gone hand in hand - back in the 1960s, when the Lakers moved to Los Angeles, all of Hollywood began to gather in the stands. Jack Nicholson, sitting in the front row in the same black glasses, has become as much an attribute of the Lakers' success story as have legendary players Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. In the same place, but in the colors of the LA Clippers, one could often see Billy Cristal, for "My Giant" took on the title role of the tallest player in the history of the league, Gheorghe Muresan (2.31 cm). On the East Coast, Woody Allen and Spike Lee cheered for the Knicks—with Lee himself playing the part of a cheerleader in his first hit film, so well that the character became part of an advertising campaign for Nike and Michael Jordan. At 19In 1997, Lee released "His Game," arguably the best basketball film ever made.

Now the basketball comedy genre is experiencing a renaissance - LeBron, chasing Jordan's ghost, releases the second "Space Jam", his ex-teammate Kyrie Irving turned a series of Pepsi commercials into the feature film "Uncle Drew". The pinnacle of cooperation between Hollywood and the NBA is the Oscar, which Kobe Bryant received for the animated short film Dear Basketball.

NBA is music

Hip-hop is the art of subcultures; Basketball is a sport of subcultures. They had to cross. There have always been singing basketball players: in the 1960s, Wilt Chamberlain recorded a single in the bubblegum pop genre. Another great center, Bill Walton, hit the counterculture - he played drums several times at concerts of the legendary psychedelic rock band the Grateful Dead.

But before the 1990s, it was difficult to sell an athlete-musician (or musician-athlete) to the public. But in the golden age of hip-hop, basketball players turned around: rap albums were released by Shaquille O'Neal (Shaq Diesel, 1993), Chris Webber (2 Much Drama, 1999), Kobe Bryant (track K.O.B.E with Tyra Banks, 2000), Allen Iverson (album not released due to NBA protests) and B-Ball's Best Kept Secret compilation, an NBA star collab with rappers, in 1994 crushed by critics. But success in music was Wayman Tisdale, a mediocre center, but an excellent jazz bassist who recorded eight albums, one of which even hit the first lines of Billboard in the category "modern jazz". In the 2000s, the trend for basketball players in rap was supported by Ron Artest, Tony Parker and other players, but the real breakthrough came in the next decade: Damian Lillard under the pseudonym Dame D.O.L.L.A. became a successful soundcloud rapper, releasing three albums, Victor Oladipo participated in The Mask, and JaVale McGee even wrote a song for Justin Bieber.

It also happened the other way around: rappers kept trying to break into the sport.

Kool Herc, the famed DJ and founder of hip-hop, was a New York street basketball legend in the early 1970s. Actually, the nickname Herc, short for "Hercules", he got there.

But musicians usually did not go beyond streetball or school teams, with the exception of curious exceptions - in the early years of the NBA, pop accordionist Tony Lavelli played in the league. In the late 1990s, rapper Master P tried to get into the NBA and even signed two full contracts with league clubs, but was expelled. Not so long ago, rapper J. Cole tried to repeat this trick, but he did not even get to watch it in training camp. And yet, basketball is inextricably linked to music: the names of Knicks players and other NBA teams could be heard in the songs of the Beastie Boys on almost every record, the Red Hot Chili Peppers once did not miss a single game of the Lakers, and the kings of grunge Pearl Jam were originally called "Mooky Blaylock" after the famous defender of the 1990s. Music specially written for NBA Live 2003 became the first platinum soundtrack in the history of computer games.

Where there's basketball, there's Ice Cube, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, 2 Chainz, Migos, Snoop Dogg and hundreds of lower ranked rappers. Drake is generally the official ambassador of the Toronto Raptors, Jay-Z was at one time a co-owner of the Brooklyn Nets team, and Justin Timberlake was the Memphis Grizzlies.

The NBA is fashion

Brands and fashion houses have long understood that tall athletes have the advantage of fitting more clothes. Already at 1970s basketball players were style icons: Wilt Chamberlain and his silk shirts, disco style and huge afro hair "Doctor" Julius Irving, Knicks point guard Walt Frazier and his chic suits, hats, raincoats and overall image of a stylish pimp.

In the 1990s, basketball players dressed like gangsta rappers, in the 2000s they experimented with style and experimented until the league introduced a dress code in 2005 - now the player is required to wear only business casual off the field. The subtlety is that the interpretation of the concept of "business casual" in basketball has changed very much over the past 15 years. At first, it was just the first XXL business suit that came across in the store, then a blazer thrown over a T-shirt, later - designer three-piece suits from Tom Brown, combined with colored socks and basketball shoes. Gradually, basketball players became full-fledged models, and the room under the stands, where they parade before matches, became the local equivalent of the podium. Now Russell Westbrook, James Harden and, for example, Jimmy Butler participate in Fashion Weeks in Paris and Milan. Fashion designers see great potential in NBA players, both as physically beautiful athletes and as popular public figures. Every now and then, the league collaborates with a variety of brands (Supreme, Dior, Bershka, BAPE), which ignored the sports market a few years ago. Ronnie Feig and his brand Kith this season not only created a collection with New York Knicks symbols, but also presented a new set of game uniforms.

Last January, Louis Vuttion menswear creative director Virgil Abloh, a close friend of Kanye West, by the way, announced a long-term collaboration between the French fashion house and the American Basketball League. The first step was the creation of a case for the Larry O'Brien Cup, the main trophy of the NBA champions. It was followed by capsule collections of clothes and accessories with the league logo and prints in the form of basketball court markings. “This collection is dedicated to the world of basketball as a cultural phenomenon. The unifying power of this sport is universal for everyone,” said Abloh.

Sometimes people are not even aware of the basketball roots of the clothes they wear. So, for several generations of hipsters and just fans of good shoes, they have been wearing sneakers autographed by a basketball player - Chuck Taylor, whose signature adorns a star on every Converse All-Stars model, invented these shoes a hundred years ago specifically for playing basketball, focusing on his sports experience, moreover, for the first half century, this model really dominated the venues and only then moved into the everyday wardrobe. The tradition was continued by Puma's iconic Clydes, the first signature sneaker line in history created for Walt "Clyde" Frazier. The model became popular with fans of hip-hop and skate punk - it was convenient to break dance or ride a skateboard in them.

The Air Jordan has taken basketball sneakers to the next level, making them a cult item from athletes (from Jordan himself to boxer Gennady Golovkin), designers (Virgil Abloh), directors (Spike Lee), musicians (Eminem, DJ Khaled) , Billie Eilish) and thousands of collectors.

The NBA is the future

The NBA understands that most of the potential audience cannot or will not watch games live. In 1996, the NBA became the first league to register not only its official page on the Internet, but also the websites of its clubs.

Over the past 25 years, the Internet has become the new television for the NBA - the League Pass streaming service allows you to watch any NBA game from anywhere in the world on any device. The NBA was the first major sports organization to conduct online fan voting for All-Star Game participants, and in 2013 it integrated this system into social networks. The league now has nearly 2 billion social media followers, with 500 million of them in China. With the help of digital services, an NBA fan can not only watch matches and follow the latest basketball news, but also evaluate the best moments, communicate with players, place bets, play fantasy tournaments, buy paraphernalia, tickets and even hot dogs at the stadium. The digital business willingly goes to the NBA for advertising and partner products - for example, the capabilities of the Google voice assistant were advertised on the Golden State site, where he adjusted the lighting, turned on the music and carried out any commands of the arena manager. When the 2020/2021 season resumed after the lockdown without spectators in the stands, Microsoft created a service through which fans bought "virtual seats" and the webcam filmed them and broadcast them on huge screens located along the site.

The NBA holds technoconferences every year (the biggest being the NBA Tech Summit during the All-Star Game and the SSAC based at the MIT business school) and never misses a single new opportunity. Athlete card collecting is one of the most popular hobbies in the US, and rare pieces are sometimes sold for millions of dollars. The NBA managed to digitalize this industry thanks to the boom in NFT tokens. NBA Top Shot is the same card, only not a photo, but a video, and not on cardboard or a sticker, but in the form of a unique cryptographic token.
