The College of Charleston Cougars have quite the challenge ahead of them as they're expected to be blown off the court. They will take on the #1 North Carolina Tar Heels at 7 p.m. ET Friday at Dean E. Smith Center. These two teams come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous games.
The Cougars were able to grind out a solid win over the Chattanooga Mocs on Monday, winning 85-78.
Meanwhile, UNC had enough points to win and then some against the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks on Monday, taking their contest 69-56. The top scorers for UNC were RJ Davis (17 points), Caleb Love (17 points), and Armando Bacot (16 points).
The wins brought College of Charleston up to 1-0 and UNC to 1-0. No. 1 North Carolina looks to have a much improved offensive game against the College of Charleston on Friday after looking sluggish in its 69-56 win over UNC Wilmington in Monday’s season opener.
It was the fewest points scored by the Tar Heels (1-0) in a season opener since a 67-55 win over Michigan State on Nov. 11, 2011 on the U.S.S. Carl Vinson aircraft carrier. It was the fewest points scored in a home opener since a 77-69 loss to Hampton on Nov. 16, 2001.
What will help is the Cougars’ (1-0) desire to play fast. According to Ken Pomeroy, C of C plays at the eighth fastest tempo in the nation. Charleston defeated Chattanooga 85-78 in its opener on Monday.
Carolina shot just 2-for-10 from 3-point range in the opener and scored just four points on fast breaks. The Heels will need to improve in both of those categories on Friday to feel more like normal.
