Who's Playing

UCF @ Memphis

Regular Season Records: UCF 18-11; Memphis 19-9

What to Know

The UCF Knights and the Memphis Tigers are set to clash at 9 p.m. ET March 11 at Dickies Arena in the second round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament.

UCF earned some postseason bragging rights after a successful outing on Thursday. They skirted past the South Florida Bulls 60-58. The Knights got double-digit scores from four players: guard Darius Perry (13), guard Darin Green Jr. (11), guard Darius Johnson (10), and guard Tyem Freeman (10).

Meanwhile, Memphis didn't have too much trouble with the Houston Cougars at home on Sunday as they won 75-61. Guard Tyler Harris (15 points) was the top scorer for the Tigers.

UCF is expected to lose this next one by 9.5. Those betting on them against the spread shouldn't have high expectations for them since the team is 2-6 ATS when expected to lose.

UCF found themselves the reluctant recipients of an unpleasant 88-60 punch to the gut against Memphis when the two teams last met earlier in the regular season. Can the Knights avenge their loss, or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll soon find out.

University of Memphis Center Jaylen Duren may be No.

1 pick in 2022 Draft - Basketball

As Bleacher Report reports, the start of the U.S. Collegiate Championships season has put Memphis center Jaylen Duren firmly in the pre-draft list.

Düren (18 years old, 211 cm) in his first season in the NCAA is averaging 10.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game on 65.5% field goal shooting.

Scouts are already comparing the player to Lakers center Deandre Jordan. Prior to the start of the season, Duren was in third place in the NBA draft, behind Duke forward Paolo Bankero and Gonzaga center Chet Holmgren.

Basketball is back in Memphis - God Damn It! - Blogs

Editor's Note: You are in the God Damn It! User Blog. Here they write about the NBA in the context of advanced statistics, analyze the draft and the moves of the clubs in the offseason. Plus, subscribe - and there will be even more such posts on the Tribune.

    Glossary

Win Shares (WS) - the number of wins that the player has brought by his actions.

Win Shares/48 (WS/48) - contribution to the player's victory in one game.

The indicator can also be divided into a defensive part (DWS) and an attack part (OWS).

VORP is the point scale score for 100 team possessions a player has contributed for a player above replacement level, promoted to the average team and proportional in an 82 game season. This is the equivalent of WAR in baseball, which indicates the overall contribution of players to their team.

Box Plus/Minus - an assessment of the quality of the player and his contribution to the success of the team. It can also be defensive and offensive

What do you need to know?

    What is Memphis known for?

The fact that Francis got angry as soon as he heard about who chose him.

What the team gave for Pau Gasol's sack of potatoes and Mark's Lithuanian sack of potatoes.

By losing the chance to pick LeBron on the lottery of the decade.

And of course, that in the best period of her history she managed to be better than Popovich in terms of killing the opponent's game.

"Grit&Grid" - it was, of course, a very interesting experiment, but in general it is quite difficult to implement in our time. Back in 2004, Detroit won with the same philosophy (not tactics), but now the principle “Attack wins games, defense wins titles” works with some limitations.

Memphis got respect, but the team had little chance of winning the championship. The paradox is that a franchise that had its brightest period in history during the Grit & Grid era, fans forgive me, is sad enough.

In fact, Memphis is not allowed to play Grit & Grid. It's true, friends. Not only is the team located in Tennessee, and if you don't like monster trucks and Jack Daniel's, then you definitely don't want to go here.

Now imagine yourself as an NBA star entering the SA market. How likely are you to want to play Grit&Grid in Tennessee?

Exactly, but a lot has changed in one summer.

Congratulations, basketball is back in Memphis!

    Why is Memphis worth watching?

Do not forget about Telegram channel and a plus sign to speed up the process of materials / podcasts!

First, Ja Morant. Russell Westbrook once saved basketball in Oklahoma. Yes, he did not lead the team to the championship, but with what frenzy and diligence he played for the team deserves special respect.

Morant looks like a puny Westbrook with a pinch of Fox, and he also reminds me of Lillard and CJ in the context of being the first boys in the country at their little universities. This is a good side of the mentality, they were already leaders, they did not need to be taught to take responsibility, and they tried to escape from their university ahead of time. Lillard peaked in his 4th year in the NCAA, CJ in his 2nd but decided to stay (in vain), Morant left after his second season, but what! 24.5+5.7+19- there is no point in staying further in the system of this university, and changing it to a conditional Kentucky is also a controversial issue that does not have a clear answer. It can help someone a lot - Clark, but Morant could only go down in the draft, especially next year, when it will be difficult to select a NOT defenseman in the first round.

Morant is a lot of fun, his jet engine in his ass only runs at full speed.

Nerds will say something about efficiency, but you won't hear them because of Jah's highlight highlights.

He has a reference first step - sharp, fast, far, but if this does not work, then he has about a million tricks from street platforms in his arsenal.

But the main difference from Westbrook is the vision of the court and intelligence. Morant at the NCAA level was a passing genius, both hands, pick and roll, pick and pop, drive and kick, cutting, all over the court. Morant knows everything.

    On top of that:

    Pros:

    • Unique speed that only Wall at his peak and De'Aron Fox now can match
    • The combination of cunning, speed and a good crossover will make it intolerable to defend
    • Potential for a good shooter
    • NBA level point guard. He owns all types of passes and double custody against him does not work at all
    • Leadership qualities are reminiscent of Lillard. He dragged a very weak university
    • Plays always at the limit of his abilities
    • Good completion, but rather limited. You need to take into account its dimensions and see if he can get used to it. fox smog
    • High basketball IQ
    • Good defender, but not elite
    • He is a selfless player and a good teammate
    • Elite athleticism
    • Don't think he's just a star. For example, he often cut off players on rebounds
    • If he played so well in Murray State, then what will happen to normal partners?
    • Best Draft Dribbling
    • Plays better at key moments
    • Scouts say it has a positive effect on teammates in the dressing room

    Cons:

    • Incorrect throwing mechanics, need careful adjustments like raising the release point or straightening the elbow
    • Will be able to defend against position 1 and until the potential of a versatile defender is seen
    • Need to improve the right hand. The NBA has better defensemen who will sort out his problems with her.
    • Sometimes they flirt and complicate simple solutions
    • Often loses focus on defense against off-ball players. This is a problem and needs to be worked on0023
    • There is too much process going on in his head and sometimes he turns simple decisions into complex ones, making losses

I followed Morant some more, changed something and now I am very confused by the mechanics of his jump. He jumps not just on straight legs, but does it like this:

This needs to be changed yesterday. The issue of injury during such jumps is a matter of time.

I once predicted that Fox would need a year to get used to the league, fortunately I was right, Morant looks more ready, but the athletes in the NBA are the best in the world of basketball. The transition to this level is still difficult.

Second, the team has Jaren Jackson Jr.

Obviously, last season's choice of Memphis can be safely called successful and one of the most potential for the franchise.

The club was taking a serious risk, Jackson went to the draft at 18 and was very raw. At least it was considered as such by the scouts.

But the first season showed us too much potential.

Ayton got into Phoenix, which is already sad.

Bagley has a serious problem with making decisions.

    Luca may have limited growth.

Young will never learn to defend himself.

But what about Jackson? It doesn't have a single obvious disadvantage, there is no reason to limit its potential right now. Maybe that will change later, but that's the way it is now.

First, Jackson's main skill is versatility.

For example, his post-ups already in the first season were more effective than Gasol (3.3 attempts, 47.6% versus 4.1, 44.9%). His wing span (224 cm) gives him a good advantage against other big men.

While Wendell Carter is looking for a shot, Jackson has the best shot in the draft. 2.4 attempts per game, 35.9%. At the same time, Jaren scores 72% from the paint !!!

But most of all he stands out in defense. Here it can already be a guide for the players. -4% of the opponent's hit already in the debut season.

See how Jackson got into position and when he started to move.

And this is called a competent safety net. The choice of position also fetters Lillard to the maximum. Look carefully, Jackson came out when the corridor between him and a teammate completely closed the space for a pass to Collins, but at the same time, the second option was a throw, Jackson also controlled and made a block.

By the way, he and Draymond are from the same university.

    Still, Jackson has some problems.

He's the league's foul leader on 36-minute transfers while only playing 26 minutes, with Towns second.

Jackson is just getting used to the league, some conclusions on this point need to be made after the next season with a look at the dynamics in terms of 36 minutes, we will put this question on hold, but it needs to be decided now or it will not allow him to just play decisive minutes next season.

He's probably not the best rebounder yet. 6.5 rebounds - in translation for 36 minutes, this is negligible. Actually, Memphis was in 29th place in this parameter. It's hard to say what the problem is, but I can assume that Jackson's playing style is just different. Physics, arm length - with him, I would like to see how coaches work with him. So far, it's hard to imagine that Jackson will be able to reach the line of 10 rebounds, but he can collect 8.

Need to work on pick-and-rolls, or rather increase their number. This is an important skill that will greatly increase his quotes. Don't forget that pick-and-roll with Jackson easily turns into pick-and-pop.

    Player A:

    Player B:

Where is Jackson and who is second? 90,003 90,002 Player A - Davis in his first season, who came as a complete star and franchise. Player B is Jackson and not much of a difference at point A.

    Third , Brandon Clark.

Clark I don't really understand a person who looks at Clark's game and says, "I don't like him" - that's impossible. It's just unrealistic. Clark could be a revolution in the NBA, and a terrible revolution.

    Pros:

    • Excellent jumping ability. He is only 203 centimeters tall, but he averaged 3.1 blocks per game. I deliberately do not write blocks in the statistics, because these are not always objective figures. For example, Towns is in the top 10 in blocks, but he tries to block on every attack and because of this, he leads to every fake, allowing a large number of fouls. Here the situation is different - excellent reaction and a good jump
    • He is a very "correct" player, makes good decisions and plays smart.
    • Good ball handling
    • Good screening, but still not quite NBA level
    • Tearing ass for the team
    • Interestingly finishes attacks under the basket, rather unpredictable
    • Reads the game well in defense and has the ability to trade for defenders
    • Good athlete

    Cons:

    • He needs to develop a long shot or he will have to play a center with a height of 203 centimeters, and this is problematic
    • It's interesting, but he himself tends to play the role of center, but how will he play against healthy guys?
    • I don't like the mechanics of his throw, it needs to be changed. He already did this after moving to Gonzaga, but
    • needs to be finalized
    • Almost 23 years old, limited potential
    • Frequent block attempts - lost rebounding position, but overall he rebounds well

I wrote all this before, but then he became the MVP of the summer league, and this is a dubious tournament, but the way Clark stood out is not to be missed.

The next segment is permeated with extraordinary love, perhaps it will not be completely objective.

First step speed from a quarterback with the athleticism of an American football player, "light feet", 68% paint percentage in college, this is on par with the best sticks in the style of Treewood Deandre Jordan, but he is not a stupid dunk tool, he can finish like a technical guard:

In the last 10 years, I have not seen a player with so many paint finishes. A very soft brush that can be used for a quick release.

But Clark's main advantages are not in this, he has 2 qualities that are very rarely combined. He's an ass buster and he's a smart player. He can give passes, he chooses the position on the rebound based on the rebound, boxing out for the opponent, but when necessary, he will calmly deviate from the principles of logic and climb into the wheelhouse to three big men. And he'll take the pick.

Why is such a player not in the top 3 of the draft?

    A) Age - 23 years old, the main reason that cost 10-15 positions, but here it is also debatable. I once wrote that despite his age, you can expect potential from Siakam, but maybe not from Doncic. Clark spent 2 years at the university, from which there was almost no one in the league in the history, but then he missed the year and ended up in Gonzaga and showed a great level of play. Total - Clark can make another leap.

    B) Shooting - although to be honest, I'm starting to look less and less at shooting in students, because Clark has thrown 4 out of 15 over the past year, and in the summer league he already made 5 out of 9. There are a lot of reverse examples, there is not much choice , Clark has slightly wrong throwing mechanics, but a very soft brush. He will shoot from a distance

    C) Clark is a small forward with a power forward skill set playing center. Perhaps Clarke will have to play center, since Jackson will most likely remain playing on the four, but it's one thing to crumble future auditors in the paint, and another thing to meet Giannis, Robinson or something else in the Taco style in the paint.

    Fourth, Taylor Jenkins.

Popovich's most successful student now is Mike Budenholzer, and now the second man for Atlanta and Milwaukee was Taylor Jenkins. He was also in the Spurs system, so you can expect a lot from him. We don’t know what to expect from him, but the Popovich system is a stigma and a certain level of expectation from graduates of this system, and you can’t help but remember this Jenkins moment:

    What will Memphis play?

If this is the head coach - a student of Budenholzer and Popovich, then there are few options. The priority will be shifted towards creating space, open throws, but still with an advantage towards long-range shots. Perhaps Jonas will have to throw more, and on defense he will take Brook's position. Players will be driven into a trap to him. Well, and the teams of Popovich and Budenholzer are famous for their accurate game without fouls - very important, given that the team is young, and Jackson has big problems with this.

    Who else does Memphis have?

In fact, the depth of the composition is very good.

There's Dillon Brooks, , who looked like a potential first-team guy in the village at Memphis, but an injury in his second season severely curtailed his prospects. Now Brooks is considered in the Western media as Middleton on the minimum wage. He has dimensions, physical data, he can defend himself and throw, but now his place in the attack will have to be won again. There are Jackson and Morant - the first options, then the seats are vacant, but Clark looks preferable to the rest. However, Brooks looks like the perfect match for a duet with Morant. Jah will usurp the ball from the first season, but Dillon is an auxiliary function that does well without him. In the pre-season game, he came out at the start.

Yes Melton. The Ringer had material about the players who will become the next Pascal Siakam. Not in terms of position, of course, but in terms of development, progress. One of them is Melton.

Last year, among all the players who played at least 900 minutes, Melton had the highest percentage of interceptions (3.3%). The last player who had a higher figure was Rondo. Usually a player's defense gets much better after the first season, but a rookie year is a good projection, a litmus test.

What is Melton's problem? He's not bad in the draw, he's great in defense, but he can't be a very important option in attack - his shot is frankly bad. Aside from under-the-rim shots, Melton's most accurate hitting area is mid-range and long-range two-point shots. This is no good, that is, hits are good, but it would be better if this zone were not the most effective.

Well, Melton's external problem is Morant, Brooks and Jones, who have to play a lot.

Yes Tyus Jones. Did you know he set a new NBA record last season? For one loss, the player took 6.9 assists. His playing IQ is beyond praise, perhaps the only point guard with whom Towns looked like a very good duet.

In a good script, Jones becomes the perfect supporting element for Morant, who takes part of the rally, and Jackson is fed twice as many passes, but Jones is too limited a player. No one doubts his playmaking abilities, but as a stand-alone offensive option, he looks unconvincing.

In a realistic scenario, Jones will become the leader of the second five, who will lead the game of reservists.

There is also a negative scenario - Melton is progressing very seriously, there is Brooks, Allen, they may be worse, but in general they look more versatile. They can create a moment for themselves, look stronger defensively (not Grayson), and their physique looks preferable.

    Everybody hates Duke!

Grayson Allen's career had gone through so many stages by the age of 24 that it feels like we've known him for 10 years. Allen was a young, up-and-coming Duke star. Unlike most white players, Allen had a good physique and character. Then Allen became the most annoying player in the NCAA, and hatred of him united the fans of other teams. Dirty play, mean tricks and yet playing for one of the most successful colleges was insanely annoying. Then Allen stayed for the fourth year, spent it faded and came under 21 peaks in the league. In Utah. And everyone forgot about him. Not that he failed the first season, but much more was expected. As a result, he turned out to be a bargaining chip and got into the meat grinder of defenders in Memphis. There is Morant, Brooks, Jones and Melton, and they all look more talented and stronger, but Allen has become even weaker - the defense has become much worse, the shot is rather mediocre, and the ratio of assists to losses is negative.

Yes Jonas Valanciunas , the need for such a player disappeared 7 years ago, but the Lithuanian can provide the necessary level of experience and protection. Yes, and Jonas for those 19 games in the team gave out 19.0 + 10.7 + 2.2, which is already a good level, but in fact even such Valanciunas will not be needed in the long term - 3 years, this is exactly the period where the team will need a Lithuanian.

There is Jay Crowder , which is a 3-and-D performer who can be traded during the deadline. On the other hand, Jay can be left to build culture and pair well with other players.

There is Andre Iguodala, who doesn't really want to stay in the team, and if you think about it, then with all the possibilities of Andre, the team doesn't really need him. Using Andre without a ball is tricky, he was never even a mid-level shooter, and Morant is not Curry, he's a mix of Fox and Westbrook that needs a ball.

Role players will be Kyle Anderson as a player who can do everything, but very slowly, Bruno Caboclo as a player who has finally reached the level of a player who has a couple of years left to the level of an NBA player and a contract Solomon Hill, which will hang on the payroll.

There is John Jackson, who was called the potential leader of the team, but very quickly merged his career, and even tried so hard to do it.

Two years ago, Jackson entered the league as the new Butler, and in the wildest predictions, Kawhi. There was one small note - the character of the player. And everything would be fine if he got into Miami Riley, who didn’t correct such people, but he got into Phoenix:

    • Josh Jackson charged with resisting arrest and attempted escape
    • Josh Jackson is accused of smoking his 4-month-old daughter

    Total:

Memphis and Josh Jackson agreed that the player will not come to training camp

Skipping a training camp with a new team is not a path from scratch, but from -10. Congratulations Josh!

In fact, I don't want to blame the team from Arizona here either, it certainly didn't affect the player, but here the case was launched from the very beginning.

    Resume

Tennessee used to be the best at keeping others from playing, but that's changed. The talent of the team per unit is too high to play it again, can Morant and Jackson soon form another all-star duo or trio? Clark is very close to surprising many, and then there's Brooks and a potentially good coach, so maybe it's time to look at Memphis again, if only because of the new jerseys!

    Cultural comparison

When Panic! At the Disco was the first to make a big name for themselves - it was cool, but it wasn't that new, it wasn't that chic, it wasn't that bright. Unusual, interesting, but not unique. No, Brandon, I've seen you before, you were the pop version of Fall Out Boy, which was the pop version of Sum 41, so thanks for trying, there were flashes, but overall quite boring. – «Grit&Grid»

But Brandon Urie, who was essentially alone in the band and gave a great sprint since 2015 in the form of two top albums, when he started working on everything on his own – is this already an application for one of the vocalists of the generation? Difficult.
