Penn State and Virginia Tech both survived second-half comebacks by their respective first-round opponents to advance to the semifinals of the Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic in Charleston, S. C., Friday. It’ll be another early tip for the Nittany Lions, as the game will begin at noon Eastern and will be carried by ESPN2.
Penn State is 4-0 under second-year coach Micah Shrewsberry. The Nittany Lions advanced to the semifinals with a 73-68 win over Furman Thursday.
Virginia Tech is 4-0 under fourth-year coach Mike Young. The Hokies beat Old Dominion 75-71 to make the semis.

• Penn State is considered the road team Friday and will be wearing its blue uniforms.
• The Lions led 46-21 with 1:30 to go in the first half against Furman, and shot 54.8 percent from the floor and 46.2 percent from the arc in the opening period. But PSU made only 35.7 percent of it shots from the floor and the same percentage from the 3-point line in the second half.
• The Paladins got as close as 69-68 with 1:48 to go, but Lundy hit a jumper and two free throws down the stretch to close out the scoring. Furman missed its final four shots of the game, all 3-point attempts.
• Funk was 1-of-6 from the floor and 1-of-5 from the arc before hitting two 3-pointers in the clutch. One was with the shot clock below one second and PSU leading 66-63.
• Pickett and Lundy each scored 20 points to lead Penn State. No other Lion reached double figures in scoring. Pickett paced the team with seven assists and Lundy was tops with seven rebounds.
• Pickett and Lundy shot a combined 14-of-22 from the floor. Penn State’s three other starters — Funk, Wynter and Dorsey — combined to shoot 6-of-22.
• Penn State has outscored its opponents 163-116 in the first half this season. That margin shrinks to 161-147 in the second half.
• The Lions have made at least 10 3-pointers in all four games this season. They made 10 or more in just seven games in the entire 2021-22 campaign.
• Penn State has had at least 16 assists in all four games this season. It had 16 or more in just five games in the entire 2021-22 campaign.
• The Hokies had five players reach double figures in scoring against ODU, led by Pedulla’s 18.
• Virginia Tech led by as many as 20 points late in the first half before the Monarchs stormed back in the second half. They got as close as two (73-71) with eight seconds left before Cattoor made two free throws to seal it.
• ODU outrebounded the Hokies 46-32. Of course, some of that had to do with the Monarchs going 29-of-71 from the field, which allowed them to grab 18 offensive rebounds.
• Virginia Tech had only two offensive rebounds Thursday and has only 31 on the season.
• The Hokies’ four opponents this season have a combined record of 4-10.
• The Caesars Sports Book line closed at Virginia Tech -3.0, the first time this season Penn State was an underdog. The over/under was 142.0.
• Virginia Tech is the highest ranked team in the tournament according to KenPom.com (27 as of Thursday night). Penn State is second among the field (34 as of Thursday night).
• Penn State is 4-6 all-time versus Virginia Tech. The Lions are 3-3 at home, 1-2 on the road and 0-1 at neutral sites in the series.
• Penn State hammered Va. Tech 75-55 in Blacksburg in the last meeting between the two programs, which took place Dec. 8, 2020.
• The Lions are 153-194 against current members of the ACC.
The winner of this contest faces the winner of the Colorado State-Charleston game in the tournament final at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Sunday (ESPN2). The two losers will play for third place at 6 p. m. Sunday (ESPNU).
