  • FGA the total number of field goals attempted, FGA = 2PtA + 3PtA
  • FG% the percentage of 3 point shot made, FG% = (FG / FGA) x 100
  • EFG% the Effective Field Goal percentage gives more credit to made 3 point field goals since they yield 1.5 times the scoring of a 2 point field goal, EFG% = (2Pt + 1. 5 x 3Pt) / FGA

  • +/- the plus/minus statistic is a measure of the point differential when players are in and out of a game. It is calculated by taking the difference in the score when the player enters the game and subtracting it from the score when the player exits the game. These differences are added up over the entire game to give the score. Thus, it is a measure of the impact a player has on the score of the game when he is in the game without measuring any specific statistic.
  • Effic a measure of a player's efficiency, Effic = Pts + Rebs + Ast + Stl + Blk (TO + FG Misses + FT Misses)

  • Pt/Possess the average number of points scored per possession
  • OReb% the percentage of available rebounds the offensive team gets, OReb% = OReb / (OReb + Opponents DReb)
  • DReb% the percentage of available rebounds the defensive team gets, DReb% = DReb / (DReb + Opponents OReb)

The NBA introduces a "plus-minus" indicator - Basketball

In the NBA regular season that has just started, official match reports now indicate a new statistical indicator "plus-minus".

As in other team sports (hockey, football), it shows how much more points the player's team scored (or conceded) in those moments when he was on the court.

For example, Andrey Kirilenko's plus-minus score was +18 in the match against Golden State, the third result in the team. And the leader in the league after the first day was his partner, point guard Daron Williams, "+24", writes "Sport-Express".

    sports resources, you can surprisingly often find lengthy publications on the NetRtg statistic (in common parlance - no rating). So, the other day, on one of the most visited resources of the Runet, with reference to a certain “Athletics”, a multi-ton “analysis” of the NetRtg indicators of Los Angeles Lakers players from a certain blogger was presented. To my reasonable question - about the relationship between the +/ and NetRtg indicators, the first advice was not to disgrace and learn the materiel, and then, after I requested the “super complex” NetRtg formula, a ban followed.

    Surprisingly, quite a few users are ready to haw "analysis" about NetRtg and react extremely negatively to the use of the +/- indicator.

    Why is that? The main reason is the absolute transparency of the +/- method and the turbidity of the NetRtg method.

    Since the results of the analysis of the +/- method are easy to check, it is avoided by bloggers whose main goal is to please their hamsters, who are terrified of the revival of the mosquito. On the contrary, the NetRtg method allows you to lay out complete nonsense and represent the analysis with a smart look.

    Descriptions of terms and formulas for some of them are available on the NBA website: https://stats.nba.com/help/glossary/. However, most often synthetic formulas are given there with an erroneous description. In the NBA glossary, you can read:

    NetRtg - measures the difference in team points per 100 possessions. At the player level, this statistic is the team's point difference per 100 possessions while he is on the court. Formula:

    NetRtg = OffRtg - DefRtg .

    OffRtg - measures the team points scored in 100 possessions. At the player level, this statistic is the team points scored per 100 possessions while he is on the court. Formula:

    OffRtg = 100*((Points)/(POSS) .

    DefRtg is the number of points allowed per 100 possessions by the team. For a player, this is the number of points per 100 possessions that the team allows while that individual player is on the court Formula:

    DefRtg = 100*((Opp Points)/(Opp POSS))

    Poss is the number of possessions played by the player or team

    firstly, the glossary was written by a rewriter hired on the text exchange, and secondly, you don’t make a report, for mistakes in which the employer will give you a fine in the amount of your salary, and half-lying in bed half-asleep reading materials about the NBA, so your moscow works at 10% Mosca Lucy

    In simple terms, NetRtg is the same as +/- with the difference being the product of two (!) coefficients:

    1) dividing the number of team possessions by 100,

    2) dividing the number of average team minutes by 48

    For example, for LeBron, the product of these coefficients during his career varied from 1. 131235 to 1.511382, not counting this season.

    On the NBA offsite, the POSS parameter is not shown in public tables, instead there is the PACE parameter - the number of possessions per 48 minutes for a team or player. But if you average the number of minutes and possessions on the basis of publicly available tables, then you will not have NetRtg and +/- values, although their correlation will be close to 1.0.

    NetRtg is a +/- rate of change type.

    However, this “speed” can be high for slag players, in LAL the NetRtg value is now the highest for Bonga and Caruso, and many times more than for LeBron.

    Watching an NBA video match, even under the threat of being shot, you will not be able to accurately measure the NetRtg of an individual player who has played several minutes in different quarters, because you will have to record all this time, in addition to score changes, also changes in time and number of possessions. Even a chronic alcoholic who is in a multi-day binge can measure +/-.

    What does +/- (and NetRtg too) show?

    The +/- indicator (and NetRtg too) shows how much the score has changed while player A is on the court.

    Let's take a real example:

    Chandler played only the last minute of the 1st quarter. He entered the court at a score of 29-28, left at a score of 35-28.
    We consider:

    (35-28) - (29-28) = +6.

    So +/- Chandler is +6, while Chandler did not score a single point (all points were scored by his partners).

    Chandler's NetRtg was probably +7.8 (too lazy to count the multiplier, because it has no physical meaning)

    But if you write in a comment, they say, Chandler's indicator is +/- equal to +6, you will get 10 dislikes. But if you write on a hamster resource: Chandler's NetRtg is +7.8, you will get 10 likes. Why? Because to the question “ish bin das ist NetRtg”, you can safely answer “these are complex calculations, go learn the materiel”.

    Let's take another example:

    Player B of team C scored 25 points in the C-D match, but his +/- turned out to be -11.
