Team USA Select Team announced filled with 17 up-and-coming NBA stars to train with U.S. Olympians

As the United States men's Olympic basketball team prepares for the 2020 Tokyo Games in a few weeks, they'll be tested by some of the brightest young stars in the NBA as they train in Las Vegas. USA Basketball announced Thursday afternoon the roster for the 2021 men's Select Team, which will train daily with the Olympic team between July 6-9 in Las Vegas to prepare the 12 selected to compete on the global stage before they head to Tokyo.

"This USA Select Team continues the legacy established by previous Select teams of helping prepare our USA National Team for the Tokyo Olympic Games," USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo said"With all the uncertainty of how many of our Olympic Team members will be available for the USA training camp because of the overlap with the NBA Finals, we chose a USA Select Team consisting of many of the top young NBA players and four players who not only own international experience, but who played recently for USA Basketball in important national team qualifying competitions. If we need to add players to fill out our roster for any of our exhibition games, we feel this USA Select Team has an excellent variety of skilled players to choose from. "

Here is the full roster of players who were named to the USA men's Select Team:

The roster features six players who were named to the 2021 NBA All-Rookie first and second team, including Saddiq Bey, Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton, Immanuel Quickly, Isaiah Stewart and Patrick Williams. Tyler Herro and P.J. Washington were also All-Rookie selections in their first year in the league.

There's also four players on the squad who have experience playing for USA Basketball before. John Jenkins, Cam Reynolds, Josh Magette and Dakota Mathis have all represented the United States during different qualifying windows for international competitions.

The Select Team will be coached by Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, while Gonzaga University head coach Mark Few and Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Jamahl Mosley will serve as assistants.

USA Basketball details how Olympic 3x3 teams will be chosen - OlympicTalk

By Nick ZaccardiMay 2, 2019, 9:11 AM EDT

Getty Images

USA Basketball will choose its teams for the Olympic debut of 3×3 via selection committee, but it’s unlikely NBA players will be eligible.

USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley said that FIBA rules dictate all four players on each of the men’s and women’s teams, should the U.S. qualify (more on that here), must accumulate ranking points by playing in 3×3 events for the year leading up to June 22, 2020.

Two of the four players must be ranked in the top 10 among Americans in the FIBA rankings, based on results from the last 12 months, on June 22, 2020. The other two must be in the top 100. That means nobody can make the Olympic team without playing in a FIBA-endorsed 3×3 event.

Ideally, USA Basketball wants to take an entire 3×3 team that has been playing together. But it could pick and choose players from different teams. The Olympic teams would be named at the latest possible date before the overall July 6, 2020 entries deadline for the Games.

NBA players would likely have to use their 2019 offseason to play 3×3 and accumulate ranking points.

“It’s unlikely, but by the letter of the law, it is possible,” Tooley said. “You could get somebody who plays in a tournament in some open window, perhaps, that earns enough points to be eligible. That’s to be determined.

“It wasn’t [FIBA’s] vision to say this is another opportunity for NBA players. It’s for a different generation, a different style of player.”

USA Basketball has heard from one unnamed WNBA player who is interested in going for both the traditional, 12-player team event and the 3×3 event, though that double may not be doable given the Olympic schedule. The WNBA season calendar, from May to September, opens up more opportunities for players to venture into 3×3 events.

USA Basketball is trying to get the word out to potential 3×3 Olympic hopefuls, as well as evaluate them, by announcing a series of more than 20 domestic 3×3 tournaments sponsored by Red Bull on Thursday. The first is June 22 in Detroit. It starts getting serious with national championships in Las Vegas this week.

So far, the highest-profile player taking part in elite-level 3×3 is former Purdue star Robbie Hummel, who played 98 games for the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2013-15.

Three-on-three games last 10 minutes, or until one team reaches 21 points. Games are played on a half-court with a 12-second shot clock, and offense immediately turns to defense after a team scores.

Matterhorn Alpine skiing men’s World Cup downhills canceled

    Associated PressOct 24, 2022, 2:28 PM EDT

    Getty

Two men’s World Cup downhill races next weekend that start in Switzerland and finish in Italy were called off Saturday due to a lack of snow on the final 300 meters of the course following an unseasonably warm fall.

Added to the calendar this season, the Zermatt-Cervinia downhill against the spectacular backdrop of the Matterhorn was set to become the first cross-border event in Alpine skiing’s World Cup history.

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) said Saturday and Sunday races had to be canceled “due to the lack of snow and the safety situation on last section of the race track” and will not be replaced.

A decision on two women’s races scheduled on the same course for Nov. 5-6 was expected Tuesday.

FIS Secretary General Michel Vion said in a statement on the federation’s website that the cross-border downhill was “a new and unique project that we continue to believe in.”

“There is a possibility of a change in weather,” Vion said. “We are therefore giving the organizers until Tuesday to make a final decision about the women’s races.”

Earlier Saturday, the season-opening giant slalom of the women’s World Cup also had to be called off because of unfavorable weather conditions on the glacier in Austria.

The 4-kilometer Gran Becca course starts in Zermatt at an altitude of 3,700 meters and finishes in Laghi Cime Bianche above Cervinia at 2,835 meters.

While parts of the course are covered by over a meter of snow, mild temperatures in recent weeks hindered snowmaking for the lower section.

FIS usually carries out its snow control two weeks before a World Cup event but last week postponed its decision on the races to give organizers more time.

Vion said local organizers “achieved great things in the past few days. It was certainly not their fault that the men’s races could not take place.”

The new downhill is a signature event for FIS President Johan Eliasch, who labeled it “iconic.”

“I have been there, inspected the race course, and it is truly phenomenal,” Eliasch said the day before the event was canceled.

The introduction of the race was meant to give the speed racing season an early start, closing the gap between the traditional season-opening giant slalom in Austria in the third week of October and the downhill and super-G races in Lake Louise and Beaver Creek in late November and early December.

However, FIS men’s race director Markus Waldner said after Saturday’s cancellation that from next season the Zermatt-Cervina downhills might be moved to a later slot in the calendar.

“For the future, we absolutely need to review the dates because we need to have more guarantee,” Waldner said. “We have to observe the nature. We have this climate change, we had a very extremely warm summer, extremely warm autumn, also. These are signals and we need to respect this.”

Earlier, some racers voiced concerns over the project, which brings the speed season forward by a month with a demanding, high-altitude race.

“It’s not really a normal downhill, it’s a long one. And it’s also on 4,000 meters in the first downhill race of the year,” Norwegian speed specialist Aleksander Aamodt Kilde told The Associated Press in a recent video call.

“So, it’s not really an easy start, so that’s what I’m most concerned about,” Kilde added. “It’s really annoying to get injured in the first race.

Jan Scherrer, Olympic snowboard medalist, ‘loses’ bet, gets funny tattoo chosen by wife

    By OlympicTalkOct 24, 2022, 2:13 PM EDT

    Getty

Swiss snowboarder Jan Scherrer won an Olympic medal and lost an unusual Olympic bet. He recently paid up.

Scherrer said that, last year, he accepted a bet from his wife, Sasha, who gave birth to daughter Sienna in May. If he won an Olympic halfpipe medal, he had to get a tattoo of her choosing.

“I thought, ‘Well, if I’m going to end up in the top three, I’m not going to care about anything anyway,’ so I said yes,” Scherrer said.

In February, Scherrer won an Olympic bronze medal, relegating Shaun White to fourth place in the last contest of his career. Scherrer previously finished third at the 2021 World Championships and 2020 X Games.

Eight months later, Scherrer got that tattoo just above one of his knees and filmed Sasha’s reaction. He said that Sasha drew it, and the design was inspired by Hiller Goodspeed.

It features a person wearing the Olympic rings across their chest and a dunce cap with “#3” on it. Above the person is a banner reading, “GOOD BUT NOT THE BEST.”

Dream Team 1992 is a unique team in the history of the sport. Could the Dream Team have been assembled at another time: earlier, later, this year? - Blogg on the floor - Blogs

    We remember the greatest.

Dream Team's performance in Barcelona 1992 is one of the iconic moments in the history of the Olympics. For the first time ever, an American basketball team was made up of NBA stars, , and it went through its opponents on its way to gold without noticing resistance.

No one managed to avoid defeat - neither the Croats with the magical Drazen Petrovic and the young Toni Kukoch (-33 in the group and -32 in the final), nor the Brazilians with the Games' top scorer Oscar Schmidt (-44), nor the bronze-winning Lithuania with Sabonis and colorful jerseys (-51, only the first rival Angola got worse, losing 48:116).

After that, the Americans brought NBA stars more than once, continued to win the Olympics, once they still lost, and now for the first time they came to the basketball tournament not in the status of favorites - and have already managed to confirm this status, having melted in front of France.

But no American team is remembered and praised as much as Dream Team. Neither the one that won the home Olympics in 1996, nor the "Ready Team" of 2008, nor the last champions of Rio.

Of course, the superiority effect also works. After losing at 19On the 88th, the Americans realized it (even somehow late - after all, the last time they took Olympic gold outside of North America was in 1964, and on European soil - in general in 1960). Finding that students were no longer able to regularly beat adult foreigners, the US Basketball Federation convinced first FIBA and the IOC to allow professionals to compete, and then the NBA to send stars to the Games.

But Dream Team's worldwide and timeless influence came from the fact that it was not just a team made up of stars. It was a team of all the best basketball players on the planet at that time.

Of the 10 players selected to start the 1992 NBA All-Star Game, 9 made the Dream Team. Another, Scottie Pippen, started instead of an injured Byrd. 11th - John Stockton, the best NBA assistant, who ended up in the second symbolic five of the season.

Another angle on the completion of the application: 9 Dream Team players represented the first or second five of the NBA season, accompanied by living legends Magic and Bird.

The 12th, as you know, took a student as a tribute to past US amateur teams. But not the advertised Shaquille O'Neal, who will become the first draft pick, but Christian Leittner - more mature (both in terms of passport, and mentally, and in game terms), more experienced (already played for the national team at the World Cup, at the Pan American Games and at the Games goodwill) as leader of the Duke University championship team and NCAA Player of the Year.

Never in any sport has a team of all the strongest players in the world gathered. It's as if the combined team of the two countries, reinforced by Borje Salming, would compete in the USSR-Canada Super Series. Probably the closest analogy is from the same 1992: Agassi, Sampras, Courier and the veteran McEnroe in the US team at the Davis Cup, but even then there were athletes from other countries equal to them in tennis: Becker, Edberg, Lendl.

There was no one equal to 11 NBA stars (we leave Leittner's mascot out of the equation) in 1992. Only Olajuwon is waiting for his American passport.

It just so happens that scoring NBA greatness ratings is my hobby, and it fits in nicely with Dream Team history.

Using my NBA Hall of Fame formula for the end of the 1991/92 season, the rating of American players who played in the 1992 All-Star Game would look like this:

    1. Magic Johnson
    2. Larry Bird
    3. Michael Jordan
    4. Isaiah Thomas
    5. Charles Barclay
    6. James Worthy
    7. Karl Malone
    8. Clyde Drexler
    9. John Stockton
    10. Dominic Wilkins
    11. Patrick Ewing
    12. Joe Dumars
    13. David Robinson
    14. Scottie Pippen
    15. Chris Mullin

...and beyond Rodman, Dougherty and the rest of the Kevin Johnsons and Tim Hardaways.

Isiah Thomas was so hated by everyone that his candidacy was not even discussed in the federation so as not to risk losing other key players - and without Thomas as teammates, Jordan and Byrd did not agree to participate for a long time.

Worthy and Wilkins would not have been physically fit to compete in the Olympics - both had knee surgery midway through the season. And Joe Dumars was considered the first choice to replace in the event of an injury (or if the Magic was not allowed to play) - in some ways it was he, and not Laitner, who was the last player in this stellar lineup.

15 top stars of the NBA season by historical rating - and 11 of them get into the Dream Team, another one in the reserve (Dumars, like Shaq, will play later in the World Cup-1994 and OI-1996), two are simply injured, and only Isaiah Thomas is out of the question - as the very exception that confirms the rule.

Of course, the team was assembled not at the end of the 91/92 season and not even during its course - the plan for recruiting the squad was invented back in February 1991, the first 10 participants (without Leittner and Drexler) were announced in September, before the start of the season, when finally convinced Larry Bird to join. Healthy Wilkins could claim the last position, but tore his Achilles - at 1994th and he will be called to the team for the World Cup.

As a result, the greatest of the best, the best of the greatest, went to Barcelona.

One can argue for a long time whether greatness in the NBA has vanished in the 21st century, but it will no longer be possible to make such a team, and for another reason. Foreigners have taken over the NBA, among the best players are now the Greek Antetokounbo, Serbian Jokic, Slovenian Doncic, Cameroonian Embiid, Frenchman Gobert. Crusaders from the world of sports, the Dream Team went on a campaign for the lost kingdom, returned the gold to America, but enchanted the whole world, who wanted to reach for their divine status (the Crusaders never dreamed of this). Basketball is no longer a US monopoly, and not even an NBA monopoly, but the Metcha Team has secured its uniqueness with this.

For example, this is what an expanded list of candidates for the US team this year to 15 people would look like, if the same rules are accepted - participants in the 2021 All-Star Game, the choice of the 15 most deserved according to the formula, no one refuses:

Doesn't look as powerful as in 1992 - plus Kawai would definitely miss the Olympics due to the operation, a few more stars are not quite healthy, and by analogy, someone else needs to be unhooked, like Isaiah. There were no such unshelled youth as in the third line of the 2021 version in Dream Team.

Okay, it's a pandemic, the Olympics have been postponed, let's reschedule here too: Westbrook and Lowry will be credited with last year's All-Star Game. At the same time, as an analogue of MVZ, we will write Butler into the NBA team of the season, and Green and Holiday into the first defense team. Alternative version of the top 15 candidates:

It makes no sense to define a student in 12th place - the level of top NCAA players has fallen too much, because the most promising players no longer stay in college for more than a year. Basketball players of the caliber of Shaq and even Leittner are not here.

By the way, which coach should be appointed to the national team? We also evaluate on the basis of the formula: in 1991 (a year before the announcement of the final composition), the US Basketball Federation had five official candidates: Chuck Daly, who got this job, as well as Lenny Wilkens (he was taken as an assistant), Don Nelson, Cotton Fitzsimmons and Larry Brown. These are the five best current coaches I rated at the end of the 90/91 season, if you take into account only those who won at least 40% of the matches that year (Bill Fitch and Dick Motta lost their coaching form, Pat Riley at 90/91 took a break from basketball).

The person with the most recent championship was appointed as the main one, his assistant - with the previous one.

According to these rules, the five candidates for the 19/20 season would look like this: Popovich, Rivers, Spoelstra, Carlisle, D'Antoni. Popovich would be in charge, Spo would be his assistants.

If we move back a year, determine by the 18/19 season, then Kerr would be the candidate instead of D’Antoni, he would become the main one, Popovich helped (now the opposite is true in the US team). Perhaps Steve in 2021 is better able to step aside and trust his leaders, and we would not see such a dead end game.

But in reality, LeBron preferred cartoons to his compatriots, and his participation was the only factor capable of once again uniting NBA superstars in the team.

Okay, what would Dream Team look like if they were going for gold for America back in 1988, and not after that bronze? 15 candidates:

Head coach - Pat Riley, assistant - KC Jones. David Robinson (most likely) or Danny Manning would go for the NCAA.

In the late 80s, the generational change in the NBA was just beginning - Ewing, Drexler, Karl Malone, Stockton at 1988th for the first time got into the team of the season, but only Carl was selected to start the All-Star Game. The team would have had two illustrious centers in the person of Karim and Moses - the third, Parish, did not make it to the MVZ that year. Ralph Sampson was also injured again, whose career broke just in the 87/88 season.

Lots of talent, but still less than in 1992. All players of the Barcelona national team could already play in 1988, but not all future superstars managed to acquire this status. Not the best time to assemble a Dream Team, especially since Bird is starting to have serious problems with his legs and back, and the Lakers players are so tired after the final with Detroit that they want to strangle Riley (Karim literally gagged Pat in the locker room with a towel, if only he did not again promise the journalists that LAL would defend the title in a year).

If Danny Ainge is in your top 15 all-stars, then something is wrong. In this case, the generation that joined the NBA in 1983-1985 and formed the backbone of the 1992 team is still too young.

If "Dream-Team" were assembled, on the contrary, only in 1996, the composition would be similar to the classic one. Without Byrd and Magic, but with Hakim Olajuwon and Shaq, and the formula identified Reggie Miller, Penny Hardaway, Richmond, Kemp and Payton as alternative candidates. By the way, all these new faces, except for Kemp (Grant Hill instead) went to the Olympics-96.

It is interesting to look completely into the past. Could the collective team of the NBA and ABA-1972 (so far without newcomer Julius Irving) avoid defeat by the USSR team? Judge for yourself:

Only Archie Clark is not a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame. Bill Sharman helps Red Holtzman on the coaching staff. The brightest student is Bill Walton.

In this team, almost half of the squad are players who are used to being the second or third option in their clubs, so there would certainly be no problems with the distribution of roles. But this is the only advantage of the failed Dream-Team-1972 compared to Dream Team 1992.

The second best team in US history is considered to be the Redeem Team of 2008, which also had the task of regaining the gold medals lost by the Olympics earlier.

Here's what a perfect named set of candidates would have looked like in 2008 (Shaq is gone because he didn't make the All-Star Game that year): Hansbrough, his 00s collegiate basketball Leittner.

Recall that the real "Team of Redemption" with Kobe, LeBron, Kidd, Wade, Paul and Dwight also played Carlos Boozer, Michael Redd, young Bosch, Carmelo and Deron Williams, and neither Billups nor Hamilton went from Detroit and not even Sheedy Wallace - but the non-star, but very useful Tayshawn Prince. That team was made up of stars, but only Kidd was young, over 30. Kobe was then considered an uncle mentor - but in the composition in the picture there are 7 people older than Bryant at once.

Such a set of stars could be considered worthy of the Dream Team title, but it would be even better if it gathered in 2006, for example. The leaders were even closer to their ideal form.

Duncan, Iverson, Stoudemire, and LeBron, Wade (as well as Carmelo and Boozer) who remained by 2008 were on the bronze team, but even more top players refused to participate. And no one refused from Argentina.

An even weirder Jackson-Riley coaching duo. In general, we can easily identify a student - this is Emeka Okafor (who also went to the real Olympics in Athens), but it would be such a bright flick on the nose of the student association if the newcomer LeBron was taken to the youth place, who went straight from school to the NBA bypassing the game for the university.

The 2004 Ideal Team looks threatening on paper, especially the top five, which included exactly the same five people that were selected to the 2003/04 NBA All-Star Team. But the globalization of the NBA has already begun - that year, foreigners Novitski, Stojakovic, Kirilenko, Yao and Magloir went to the MVZ, a year earlier Nash and Ilgauskas played there. A year later, Ginobili, the best player of the 2004 Olympics, will make his debut.

The same Olympics, where even without Dream-Team it became extremely clear: The concept of a national team super team is a thing of the past millennium.

The “Dream Team” is now literally just a dream: even if all the best players in the United States decide to come together again at the Olympic Games, one of the rivals will definitely have stars of equal size and brightness.

Dream Team 2014. How participation in the World Cup affected the players of the US team - Basketball virus - Blogs

Today the participation of professional athletes in the Olympic Games does not cause any special emotions in anyone - winning medals is still prestigious, but professional leagues are increasingly pushing amateurs and enthusiasts into the background. In the most commercially successful team sports (football, basketball, hockey), athletes simply refuse to participate in the Olympics so as not to violate the pre-season training schedule, etc. Even the prize money from the national Olympic committees, sometimes very considerable, does not change the attitude of athletes to the main sporting event much. It cannot be said that this trend has become widespread, but the Olympic Games remained, perhaps, the No. 1 competition only for athletes and several representatives of individual sports (and hockey players who do not play in the NHL). These are the realities of today. Early 9In the 0s of the last century, the attitude towards the Olympic Games was fundamentally opposite from today. To take part in the Olympic Games, and even more so, to win an Olympic gold medal was the dream of any athlete. In 1992, the dream became a reality for overseas professionals.

Before the Olympic Games in Barcelona, the stars of the National Basketball Association were recruited for the first time into the national team to participate in the most important international competition. After the 95th session of the International Olympic Committee, a decision was made to allow professional athletes to participate in the Games. The only representative who did not vote for that decision was the USSR. By the way, the USSR men's Olympic basketball team triumphantly completed the games of 1988 years old in Seoul, defeating the US team in the semifinals (82:76). The last US Olympic team, made up of students and defeated by the Union, included such notorious future professionals as Dan Marley , Danny Manning , Mitch Richmond and David Robinson .

The IOC's decision was truly historic. For current NBA players, this meant the fulfillment of some pipe dream. Such legendary, already at that time, personalities as Magic Johnson and Larry Bird got a chance to win at the end of their careers in addition to their Olympic “ring” ( Michael Jordan already had the Los Angeles 1984 gold in his personal museum). The team was entrusted to manage the team to the two-time NBA champion - the main "bad guy" Chuck Daly .

More than one article and historical opus has been written about the results of the performances of that team. 11 NBA pros plus student Christian Lettner 9Duke University's 0182 (Chuck Daley's assistant and future US national team coach Mike Krzyszewski was already coaching the Blue Devils at the time) beat all their opponents at the Olympics by an average difference of +43.8 points. The team, assembled seven weeks before the Olympics, did not leave a stone unturned from the rivals in the American Championship (passed as a stage of preparation for the Olympic Games) and the Olympic basketball tournament, becoming one of the most vivid impressions of the Games. Chuck Daly did not take a single time-out for the entire tournament, and the words spoken on the eve of the tournament became prophetic:

"You'll see great professional teams in future Olympics, but none of them can compare to this one" - Chuck Daly

The whole world watched the ups and downs of the Olympic basketball tournament, which the NBA could not boast of in those years. Fans of the game all over the world witnessed how 11 future members of the Basketball Hall of Fame (all but Lettner) introduced the world to the level of play of the strongest basketball league, which previously could only be read in the newspapers. It is that team that is rightfully considered the only Dream Team - this is how the team was called by journalists and experts of those years.

As it turned out, the Dream Team label has become an integral part of the US team of any convocation at every major competition. The US team had periods of complete dominance in world basketball, there were periods of sensational defeats and recessions, but invariably, every major world forum was preceded by talk of the Dream team and the heirs of the glorious team.

In the 90s, the US team managed to maintain the brand of the strongest basketball nation under the banner of the Dream Team and invariably return as a triumphant of the most important world forums. Dream Team II won the World Championship 1994 years old (coach Don Nelson ), Dream Team III at the 1996 Olympics (coach Lenny Wilkens ), Dream Team IV at the 2000 Olympics (coach Rudy Tomjanovich ). The only exception was 1998, when, due to a lockout at the World Championships, the US team was represented by European legionnaires and college students, and the team was content with bronze medals.

The Dream Team tag has become an integral part of the US team of any convocation at every major competition

The beginning of the 21st century was marked by the collapse of Dream Team V (coach George Carl ) at the 2002 home World Championships in Indianapolis, where the US team took a shameful 6th final place in the tournament classification. The team interrupted the 58-match winning streak, losing in the 1/4 finals of the Yugoslav national team to Pezhi Stojakovic, and ceased to be associated with something unshakable. After such a fiasco, the bronze of the 2004 Olympic Games (coach Larry Brown ) and the 2006 World Championship (coach Mike Krzyszewski ) only stated the fact that the term Dream Team has become untenable and has sunk into oblivion.

Failures of the US national team at the largest international tournaments contributed to the fact that the position of general manager appeared in the team, who was entrusted with Jerry Kolandzhel - the head of the US basketball Federation. Such a step by Jerry himself indicated that among the fans and functionaries, strong dissatisfaction was growing over the latest results of the team that had dominated world basketball for many years. Duke University helmsman was named coach of the national team.0003 Mike Krzyszewski - Led the Blue Devils to NCAA championship three times (1990/1991, 1991/1992, 2000/2001).

The result did not come immediately. The defeat at the world forum in Japan in 2006 was the first result of the work of the Colangelo-Krzyszewski duo. But already at the next major competitions - the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 - the US team again ascended the throne, where it remains to this day. The bet on coach Krzyszewski (who worked for Chuck Daly in Dream Team I) worked and today the authority of the coach in the national team and the US Basketball Federation is reinforced concrete. Coach Kay (combining work in the national team and Duke University) has already won two Olympics and two world championships with the main team of the country. In addition, Krzyszewski is the highest paid coach in American sports, earning $9 in 2014..68 million

Today, the US basketball team is called the Dream Team more cautiously. The defeats of the vaunted team in the early 2000s were already very painful. The dominance of the Americans is no longer so unconditional - there are quite a lot of strong national teams on the world stage, made up of basketball players playing in the NBA. There are 101 non-US basketball players in the new NBA season (a league record) representing an increase in the level of play and interest in basketball outside the US. Of course, not every NBA basketball player defends the colors of his national team, but the trend indicates that every year it will be more and more difficult for Americans to achieve victories in the international arena. Moreover, each team goes against the US team as the last match in life and the opportunity to "light up".

Today, the US basketball team is called the Dream Team more cautiously

Team USA won their fourth big win under Mike Krzyszewski in the summer of 2014. The team was treated cautiously on the eve of the World Cup. I heard less and less about the Dream Team and the like. Compared to the 2012 team that won the London Olympics, the team has changed almost beyond recognition. Among the victors of the last Olympics, Krzyszewski has James Harden and Anthony Davis .

In an extended list of the national team players for the World Cup announced in January 2014, many triumphs of 2012, as well as players who defended the colors of the national team at different times. It cannot be said that Koich Kay himself weeded out many NBA stars - some players decided to quit the national team even before the start of preparations for the World Cup ( LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul ), others decided to part with the national team during preparatory camps ( Kevin Durant, Kevin Love ), someone was prevented by injuries ( Blake Griffin, Paul George ), and someone made a statement after the end of the Olympics ( Kobe Bryant ). The latest stars personally expelled by Mike Krzyszewski are Russell Westbrook, LaMarcus Aldridge, Tyson Chandler, Dwight Howard, Andre Iguodala, Deron Williams, John Wall, Damian Lillard, Kawhi Leonard and others.

Spain is still fresh in memory. Those who followed the tournament remember what the team did with the opponents, which was reproached for being “not a star”. Krzyszewski coaching staff (assistant Jim Bayheim, Tom Thibodeau and Monty Williams ) did not rely on stars and experience, but on youth, ambition and physics. Many national team players had never won anything in their careers and were hungry for victory. The US team became one of the youngest at the World Championships and the youngest in the history of the Dream Team (since 1992). The oldest player of this team Rudy Gay celebrated his 28th birthday during the tournament, and he won all his victories in his career in the US team (world champion 2010). All opponents were swept off the floor with an average difference of 33 points. Thus, Dream Team has not lost in the international arena for 8 years, after losing to Greece (95:101) in the 1/2 finals of the 2006 World Championship.

each 2014 USA Team Player of the Year is a mega-talented basketball player who hasn't reached his full potential (maybe except Rudy Gay ). Only Derrick Rose won the MVP of the season award, and no player on this US team became the NBA champion, which happened for the first time in the history of the Dream Team (since 1992).

    The best school is victories!

Mike Krzyszewski can almost be called the "Godfather" for the players of the current national team. Coach Kay gave young basketball players the opportunity to feel the taste of victory and record the victory in the World Championship in their personal biography. The best school is victories! In last year's MVP vote, there were only two names of basketball players - James Harden (5th place) and Stephen Curry (6th place). The start of a new regular season and the progress of almost all the 2014 world champions is clear. The most important thing is that this is expressed not only in the growth of statistical indicators, but also in the progress of teams led by players. Analyzing the results of the players at the start of the season, it can be assumed that 5 players of the national team will seriously claim the MVP of the season at once - Curry, Harden, Clay Thompson, DeMarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis . The progress of young performers is obvious, and after all, the basketball players of the national team did not have a full-fledged summer vacation because of the preparation for the World Cup. Let's try to evaluate the results of the US national team players at the start of the regular season in relation to last season's performances. To what extent did participation and success at the World Championships contribute to the progress of young performers?

Scales for assessing the progress of players are the most elementary: + ” ( Progress ) - the player progresses in comparison with the last season, = = = = " (same) - the player remained at the same level, " - " (regression) - the player regresses compared to the previous season. An exception was made only for Derrick Rose - due to injury, the result of the 2011/12 season was taken for evaluation (39games).

90 9000 For the MVP Of The Last World Championship, The Summer Was So Full Of Events And News That It Could Have Been Extended For Two Summers. Kairi put on a real show in the final against Serbia, scoring 26 points, 4 assists and making 6 of 6 3-pointers. After the final, Irving said in feelings that this was his most important victory in his life.

"To date, winning the World Championship is the biggest achievement of my life." — Kyrie Irving.

Irving's Cleveland went from a playoff fighter to a championship contender in one summer, and Kyrie himself went from a first choice on offense to a 2-3 option. LeBron James the undisputed leader of the Ohio State team, and Irving accepted the fact, resigned to the role of a shell carrier for the King. So far, however, Irving is not showing himself to be the best assistant - the number of assists has decreased by 1.3 on average. for the match. Most of Kyrie's authority to organize the team's attacks was taken over by James, but so far this is seen as one of the problems that new team coach David Blatt needs to solve. LeBron, one of the best scorers in the history of basketball, is doing what Irving was called to do before the start of the season, and losing in scoring, which is often to the detriment of team results.

Kyrie Irving loves and knows how to score - this season he is second in scoring in Cleveland (behind James) and improved last season's individual record. Most notably, Kairi has significantly improved his field goal execution, shooting the same amount as last year (7.5 hits), but using fewer attempts (15.3 attempts) - 2.1 attempts less. Both 2-point attempts (52.2%) and 3-point attempts (42.2%) have improved - Irving has never shot so accurately in his career. Also worthy of respect is the decrease in the number of losses in cf. per game - 1 loss per game less than last season and 1.2 losses less than avg. for a career. It remains to wait for the Kairi team to find their game and gain the necessary momentum. So far, the defender and his team have more questions than flattering reviews.

    2014/15 season:

    36.4 min, 21.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.0 steals, 2.7 turnovers, 46.3% FG

Rudy Gay has already been written off by many, especially after he was traded twice in one year. Especially unpleasant for Rudy were the statements of former teammates, who stated that the departure of Gay had a positive effect on his former teams. Toronto, after leaving Gay, managed to climb to 3rd place in the Eastern Conference in the last regular season, which contrasted strongly with the team's results before the trade. The player with a heavy contract looked like a real ballast, but the new season gives hope that Rudy Gay's career can still be rehabilitated.

Mike Krzyszewski believed in Gaye and never forgot the player's contribution to the 2010 World Cup victory. The forward became the oldest player in the national team at the last World Cup. Other basketball players played the main violin in the team, but the trust from the head coach of the country became a strong impetus for Rudy.

The new season gives hope that Rudy Gay's career can still be rehabilitated.

Sacramento is looking much stronger this season, with a 10-10 (50.0%) record so far and 1.5 wins behind the playoff zone in the strongest West. Every NBA fan will admit that Cousins has most of the credit for the team's progress, but it's pointless to deny glimpses of Gaye's game. Rudy has improved all major stats from last season, with career highs in points, assists per avg. for the game and the implementation of free throws (86.7%). The likelihood of Sacramento making it into the postseason is still slim, given the competition in the West and Oklahoma City returning to the top 8 with a high probability. The player is believed in by his current team, as evidenced by a new contract signed recently. Now the Kings are coming 9-mi and, perhaps, we are witnessing the brightest stage of the career of Rudy Gay.

    Assessment 9000 Derrick Rose (Chicago)

    Career averages:

    36.2 minutes, 20.6 points, 6.7 assists, 3.8 rebounds, 3.0 turnovers, 45.8% from the field

    2011/12:

    35.3 minutes, 21.8 points, 7.9 assists, 3.4 rebounds, 3.1 turnovers, 43.5% FG

    2014/15 season:

    26.9 minutes, 15.6 points, 5.2 assists, 3.2 rebounds, 3.2 turnovers, 40.3% from the field

What deserves the most respect when analyzing the game and career of Derrick Rose it is the tenacity with which Chicago continues to believe in its traumatic leader. One of Krzyszewski's assistants in the national team, head coach Bykov Tom Thibodeau managed to push his favorite to the world forum, convincing the coaching staff that this would be good practice and motivation for the player. So far, Rose is one of the minority of US team members who regressed after the World Cup. In this state of affairs, one can find both objective reasons (injuries) and subjective ones (Derrick's attitude to his health and career).

"When I miss matches, I don't care about the current season, but about my health and future" - Derrick Rose.

To be honest, Rose's statement about stress and old age did not cause any emotions, except for negative ones. Trying to understand him as a person, I still suggested to myself that he is an athlete who earns millions and instills hope in the hearts of hundreds of thousands of his fans (who, most likely, have diminished recently). In 12 matches this season, out of 20 team games, Rose only sporadically turned on the speed for which he was loved and recognized in 2011. It is striking how carefully the defender plays and in every possible way avoids collisions and risky passages. This style of play entails a decrease in the effectiveness of Rose and his influence on the team's game. To be more precise, Derrick is a pitiful shadow of his past self, and the more media reports about another injury, etc., get into the eyes, the less one believes in the success of the Bulls management's idea to build a team around Rose.

    2013/14:

    2014-15:

    33.6 mins, 19.4 points, 2.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds, 1.4 steals, 2.0 turnovers, 39.4% FG

Another player who did not benefit from the World Cup and the lack of a full summer vacation was DeMar DeRozan. Against the backdrop of team success, this fact looks somewhat illogical. Last season was by far the best of a shooting guard's career, with career highs in points, rebounds, assists and 3-pointers (30.5%). DeRozan took full advantage of the departure of Rudy Gay from the team and shouldered the burden of leadership with which he walked until the start of the new season on his thin shoulders. One gets the impression that DeMar simply overworked - the player is not able to run back at the proper level as much as he did last season. The most surprising statistic is when DeRozan is on the floor, the team concedes 4 points more than they score for every hundred possessions. That is, with DeMar on the floor, Toronto, the leaders of the East, play worse than without him. As a result of all this, the undisputed new leader of the Raptors was Kyle Lowry .

With his confident play during the last championship, the player proved the groundlessness of assumptions about a possible exchange.

Before the start of last season, there were a lot of rumors that DeMar DeRozan was one of the first on the list of Masai Ujiri for a trade. With his confident play during the last championship, the player proved the groundlessness of assumptions about a possible exchange. DeRozan took part in the first all-star match in his life and did not go unnoticed by the coaches of the US team. The player fits into the game of the Toronto coach Duane Casey . The unsuccessful start of this season ended for the player after 16 games with a tendon rupture. The timing of the recovery of the player is still unknown. Today, the Dinosaurs are leaders in the Eastern Conference, but the loss of one of the main performers can greatly affect the team's game.

    2014/15:

    32.8 minutes, 23.2 points, 7.7 assists, 5.1 rebounds, 1.9 steals, 3.2 turnovers, 48.7% from game

In the new season, Stephen Curry has made himself known as one of the best players in the entire association. A confident game at the start of the championship was crowned with the best player of November in the Western Conference (Jimmy Buttler won the prize in the East). The playmaker's statistics, which remained approximately at the level of last year, are still impressive. Steph holds a career high in rebounding and 2-point shooting (55.4%). But the most important thing is that Curry's bright and spectacular game has finally become effective.

Of course, a lot of the credit for Stephen Curry being considered one of the season's MVP contenders goes to Steve Kerr, the new Golden State helmsman. The balanced game of the team in all lines, without a roll in any direction, but with a small emphasis on attack, is the merit of the new coach. And Curry is the embodiment of the ideas and ideas of the coach in the attack, as a point guard and organizer of the team's attacks. Stef's defensive skills need to be discussed separately, because. he brings the main benefit precisely on someone else's half of the site.

And Curry is the embodiment of ideas and ideas of the coach in attack.

is striking that the main performers of “Warriors” - Curry and Thompson - are at the peak, which can turn out to be an inevitable decline at the most inopportune moment. The players were deprived of proper rest in the off-season, which is fraught with a decrease in physical condition due to overload and fatigue. The challenge for the new coach is to pick the right moment to slow down in the middle of the regular season, maybe before the All-Star weekend, to pick up the pace and bring the team to its peak just in time for the playoffs. Only a blind person can doubt that Golden State will become a participant in knockout matches today, the “warriors” are so confident in the regular season.

DeMarcus Cousins shows perhaps the most progress since last season. And this progress is expressed not only in statistical terms, but also psychologically - a bad guy with whom no one wanted to mess with, who disdained to shake hands with opponents after matches, became one of the best, if not the best center in the league. Together with another participant in the summer world championship, Rudy Gay, Cousins literally revived the dying Kings from the ashes. The team is in serious playoff contention this season, and DeMarcus himself will almost certainly go to his first All-Star game. If Cousins is not in the West team, it will be the greatest injustice.

DeMarcus will almost certainly go to his first All-Star game.

DeMarcus started the season with career highs in points, rebounds, blocks, field goals, and an astonishing 80.6 percent from the free throw for a center. Cousins is being considered as one of the contenders for the MVP of the season. To do this, he went to the level of playing the dominant center league. Will this be enough to reach the playoffs or not? It all depends not only on Buggy, but also on teammates and the level of play of the opponents in the conference - the competition in the West is too strong. In the meantime, face-to-face duels with teammate USA by Anthony Davis (New Orleans) became one of the decorations of the beginning of the season. The rivalry between the two big ones promises to be one of the most important in the near future in the NBA.

Drummond's style of play, not distinguished by resourcefulness in attack, but rather tenacious in defense, attracted the coaching staff of the national team. On the agenda was a potential final with the hosts of the World Cup, the Spaniards, and such a player in the paint was very helpful. As it turned out later, the meeting with the Spaniards never took place, and the Americans went through all their rivals without using heavy artillery.

One gets the impression that the coach wants something from Drummond that he simply does not know how to do yet.

Drummond still looks like a very promising player. The new Detroit coach Stan Van Gundy does not hide the fact that he wants to build a new team around the young big man, similar to the one he had in Orlando with Dwight Howard. So far, a humiliating losing streak is postponing the success of the coach's plans. Moreover, under Van Gundy, Drummond plays less effectively, which is not surprising against the backdrop of a team failure. But losing more than 15% in the implementation of shots says a lot. One gets the impression that the coach wants from Drummond what he simply does not know how to do yet. The center has never had any special creative skills - Drummond is a tip player, waiting for his pass in the area of \u200b\u200bthe shield, and pushing his opponent into the paint. Van Gundy's constructions lead to the fact that the center is increasingly pulled away from the ring and participates in draws. Accordingly, the number of losses increased (career record). In any case, Andre's talent hasn't gone away overnight, and the Pistons have to go through a long and nasty rebuilding process that Stan started.

The forward was tireless as always, only now his energy was more meaningful and directed, and at the end of the championship he got into the symbolic team. It seemed that Kenneth would continue to rock in the NBA, but the fairy tale ended somewhere in the World Cup final with Serbia. Either fatigue, or lack of proper motivation, or competition within Denver suppress Farid's fuse. The reason for Kenneth's weak game is seen in the team 9 coach0181 Brian Shaw, unable to take full advantage of the player's speed and skill. Judging by the way the forward played in the summer, Krzyszewski managed to do it.

The reason for Kenneth's weak game is seen in the coach of the team, Brian Shaw, , who is unable to take full advantage of the player's speed and skills.

Farid's not very impressive statistical line, in the new season has worsened even more. Last season, which Denver finished 36-46 (43.9%), Kenneth was the most valuable player on the court in his team - when Farid was on the floor, the Nuggets beat opponents by 7 points per hundred possessions. In the new season, for the first time, Kenneth Farid has this indicator negative (-1 point). The most effective Denver player in this regard is Timofey Mozgov (+9).

Mike Krzyszewski said before the World Championship that the US team will be built around its key player - James Harden. The bearded man held the championship smoothly, without splashes, at his level. Harden's style of play does not imply enchanting performances when his team completely dominates the opponent. James turns on when it is necessary to turn the tide of the fight, make adjustments to the result with an accurate 3-pointer or an unexpected pass from the euro-step.

James turns on when it is necessary to turn the tide of the fight.

This season, Harden faced a situation where staffing problems made his beard responsible for that guy as well. In the absence of three players from the starting five (Howard, Beverley, Jones), James did not hesitate and managed to keep Houston afloat. There were, of course, failed matches, as against Memphis, but there were also real extravaganzas. Harden finished 5th in MVP voting last year and is in serious contention this season. It remains to wish Beardach the same as Curry - to get around the slump due to fatigue at key moments of the season and continue to improve his game in defense. So far, Harden has one of the best defensive ratings (DefRtg) on the team (98.0) and the best in his entire professional career. James Harden's most impressive record is 23 blocked shots since the start of the season. It still says something about it.

At the World Championships, Anthony Davis did not shine as expected. He took another trophy outside the NBA (NCAA and Olympic champion) and returned to New Orleans to start breaking his own statistical records. It makes no sense to list individual indicators in which Anthony gives out career records - in almost all indicators he has the best season in his career.

Anthony Davis' efficiency never ceases to impress the imagination. In just his third season in the league, Monobrow is already aiming for the MVP of the season. And he's only 21 years old. Everything rests on the Davis team. Even the arrival of Omer Ashik does not allow New Orleans to fully compete in the West. No amount of statistics will be able to convince the experts to vote for Davis for the MVP if the team is left out of the playoffs.

At the moment, Davis' participation in the global forum looks like a positive thing. In past seasons, the big man was often prone to injury, so significant stress can result in unnecessary damage. We wish Anthony to avoid injury and look forward to another personal meeting with DaMarcus Cousins.

Clay Thompson's progress is as obvious as progress is obvious Anthony and Cousins. Clay was one of the players who benefited from being on Mike Krzyszewski's staff. The results of Golden State at the start of the season speak for themselves - the team leads the association with a record of 17-2 (89.5%) and does not seem to be going to slow down. And the Curry-Thompson duet, or “Splash brothers”, as journalists call them in the USA, is gaining a gorgeous 44.4 points for two. How not to remember the main weapon of the duo - 3-point shots. Together, Curry-Thompson shoot 14 times per match, while throwing 6 long-range shots on average. per game (42.8%).

What sets Thompson apart from this season's sample is relative stability. Clay doesn't alternate between fantastic performances and failures, which happened to him often last season. Thompson has matured in terms of play and is ready to conquer new barriers. Mark Jackson's Warriors last year were a pretty offensive team that clearly had a ceiling of opportunity at the 2nd round playoff level. The current Warriors of Steve Kerr are a team with much more opportunities and potential. Reaching the conference finals will not come as a surprise to anyone. There is a strong feeling that the Splash brothers are mentally prepared to conquer the Western Conference. )

Cshishevski and the University of DUK quite unexpectedly ended up in the final application of the national team. The center is well known to Coach Kay from his NCAA performances. Such trust of the coaching staff was a big advance for Plumley Jr. Sason is the only player on the US national team who is not a starter on his team. It's still too early to judge the prospects of the center to become the main one in Brooklyn, because even when Brooke Lopez is on sick leave, Plumley is rarely trusted with a place at the start. According to the first impressions this season, Mason Plumley has remained at the same playing level as a year ago.

Summing up the performances of the US team players at the start of the new regular championship, it is worth noting that practically all players have reduced playing time (except Irving), and many young performers are experiencing a decline in playing time. Most likely, this is a consequence of fatigue and workload in the offseason.
