Basketball rims, or hoops, are orange painted goals attached to the backboard and used for scoring points in a game of basketball. Basketball rims today are designed as breakaway rims comprised of a hinge and spring that allow the rim to bend when a player dunks without shattering the backboard. The rim itself is made of a 5/8” | 1.6 cm steel diameter steel rod that is formed into a ring with an inner diameter of 18” | 45.72 cm. Basketball nets are hung from the bottom of the rim with lengths between 15”-18” | 38.1-45.7 cm. Basketball rims are mounted 10’ | 3.05 m from the court floor.

In basketball, the basket is comprised of a hoop (net) attached to a flat backboard (vertical glass board). Regulation basketball hoops are suspended 10’ | 3.05 m from the playing surface and have a standard rim diameter of 18” | 46 cm. The vertical backboard surface is made of plexiglass or tempered glass to prevent shattering and is sized at 42” x 72” | 110 x 183 cm. Basketball rims are manufactured from high tensile carbon steel to provide the ball with the correct amount of bounce while also having give for players that can dunk.

Purpose and selection of basketball nets
Basketball has been an Olympic sport since 1936. Invented by the American James Neisman at the end of the 19th century, the game has undergone many changes. This applies not only to the rules, but also to the equipment.
Confirmed historical fact: in the early days of basketball, simple wicker baskets were used instead of baskets to collect fruit. They were suspended from balconies at a level of about three meters above the ground. The people sitting on the balconies prevented the balls from flying into the baskets, so basketball backboards appeared to protect the projectile from the fans. It was inconvenient to get the ball out of the basket every time it hit, so the bottom of the fruit container disappeared.
After some time, the baskets were replaced with metal rings, leaving the historical name of the inventory. Basketball hoops were more durable and comfortable than wicker bowls. After a while, a net was hung on the ring.
Photo 1. Ball in the net
Requirements for nets
Basketball nets are subject to stringent requirements. When equipping a playground for professional games, the following standards are taken into account:
- 12 fastening loops;
- 40-45 cm long;
- production material - white rigid cord;
- diameter is optimal so that the ball does not get stuck.
Manufacturers of nets know exactly what is bad if, when throwing the ball, the woven fabric gets tangled, thrown up, torn. To produce high-quality equipment, serious manufacturers of sports equipment strictly follow the regulations.
Why does a basketball hoop need a net?
It seems to ordinary people that the grid is an extra element of the structure. Especially when you consider the fact that both balls and fingers of especially active players get stuck in it. Surprisingly, even professional basketball players do not always give the right answer to the question why the ring needs a net. These are the assumptions made by athletes and fans:
- for beauty;
- makes a pleasant rustle when the ball hits;
- helps you aim better;
- after hitting the ring, the ball falls exactly down thanks to the net, and there is no need to run after it;
- a relic, a tribute to tradition - the mesh is hooked to make the ring look more like a fruit basket, which was originally used for the game in the 19th century.
Photo 2. Chain net
All the answers are good, but the truth is: the net on the basketball hoop helps to fix the ball hitting the target. Her appearance reduced the number of controversial points. They are not in a hurry to get rid of the net even now, when the flight of the ball is monitored not only by players, referees and fans, but also by modern video surveillance.
Basketball hoop nets in examples
Not all nets withstand powerful attacks in basketball. In the yards, you can see structures with metal chains instead of rope mesh with cells. They are certainly strong and durable, but there are other options. The best characteristics are characteristic of products made of kapron. Even products made from thin threads show the highest level of reliability.
Photo 3. Nylon mesh
A good purchase for yard use, school or other children's educational institution - inventory art.0
. A mesh with a thread thickness of only 2.6 mm is used here. For competitions, active training, professional sports, a product with a cord thickness of 7 mm, art. 0
