2022 NCAA Tournament Brackets
GREENSBORO, N. C. (theACC.com) –
Five Atlantic Coast Conference programs earned bids to the 2022 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Duke, Miami, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech were selected to compete in the 68-team event, which begins Tuesday with First Four games in Dayton, Ohio. The first round starts Thursday.
ACC regular-season champion Duke (28-6, 16-4 ACC) notched the No. 2 seed in the West Region and plays No. 15 seed Cal State Fullerton (21-10) on Friday in Greenville, South Carolina. Making their 44th NCAA appearance, including the 36th under head coach Mike Krzyzewski, the Blue Devils are 114-38 all-time in NCAA Tournament action, with national championships in 1991, 1992, 2001, 2010 and 2015.
North Carolina (24-9, 15-5) earned a No. 8 seed in the East Region and will play No. 9 seed Marquette (19-12) on Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas. UNC will make its 52nd appearance in the NCAA Tournament – most of any ACC program – and head coach Hubert Davis guided the Tar Heels to the tournament in his first season at the helm. UNC owns a 126-48 record in the tournament with NCAA titles in 1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009 and 2017.
Miami (23-10, 14-6) notched the No. 10 seed in the Midwest Region. The Hurricanes will take on Southern California (26-7) on Friday in Greenville. Miami picked up its 11th NCAA Tournament bid, including its first since 2018 and fifth under head coach Jim Larrañaga. The Canes are 8-10 all-time in NCAA Tournament action.
Fresh off winning its first ACC Championship on Saturday night, Virginia Tech (23-12, 11-9) earned the No. 11 seed in the East Region and will battle No. 6 seed Texas (23-12) Friday in Milwaukee. The Hokies will be making their 13th NCAA Tournament appearance, including the fifth straight and the second under head coach Mike Young. Virginia Tech holds an 8-12 all-time record in NCAA play.
Notre Dame (22-10, 15-5) earned its 37th NCAA bid, including its first since 2017 and 13th under head coach Mike Brey. The Fighting Irish earned a No. 11 seed in the West Region and will play Rutgers (18-13) on Wednesday in a First Four matchup, with the winner moving on to play No. 6 seed Alabama (19-13) on Friday in San Diego. The Fighting Irish are 38-40 in all-time NCAA Tournament games.
The ACC is the winningest conference in NCAA Tournament history with a .654 winning percentage. Programs currently in the ACC have combined to win 17 NCAA Championships. League teams have combined to win 454 NCAA Tournament games all-time. In the last six tournaments, ACC teams have combined to win 78 games while placing five teams in the Final Four and earning three national titles (Duke 2015, North Carolina 2017 and Virginia 2019).
Sosnovka athletes play at Chelyabinsk basketball tournaments
Sosnovskaya Niva journalist found out on which Chelyabinsk basketball courts one can cheer for Sosnovskaya teams.
BallGames Development League Tournament
Venue: Sports Hall of the All-Russian Society of the Deaf, Krasnoarmeiskaya Street, 140.
Team School Dolgoderevenskoye
According to the organizers of the tournament, about 15-20 teams participate in the competition every year, including commercial, corporate, construction and sports teams.
The team of the Dolgoderevenskaya school under the guidance of coach Semyon Popov is one of the youngest in the tournament. Among the participants there are teams from the sports school of the Olympic reserve No. 8 and the sports school "Olimp", in which schoolchildren also play. But the main composition of the rest of the teams are students and already established athletes.
Dmitry Kozlov, team of Dolgoderevenskoye school
– Pupils from grades 7 to 11 play for the Dolgoderevenskoye school, says Semyon Popov. - We started training in September of this year and immediately decided to enter the city competitions. Of course, it is difficult for the guys to play with more experienced opponents - they are just getting to know this sport. But we will try and work.
Vitaly Yarchikhin , Dmitry Kozlov , Ilya Odintsov play in the Dolgoderevenskaya team0008 , Gleb Yalalov , Nikita Astakhov , Timur Davletshin , Artyom Martsiokho and Nikolai Vinogradov .
Coach Nikolai Kornilov
This season Sosnovsky district is represented by two teams led by Nikolay Kornilov . They also compete in different divisions. The "OldStars" team in the Super A division, which brings together the strongest teams in the championship. "Sosnovsky district U16" in the division below the rank - Super B.
“Last season, the Sosnovsky District U21 team played under my leadership, which brought together the best young players of the Sosnovsky District under 21,” says Nikolai Kornilov. - We made our debut very well, beating strong and experienced men's teams. In the regular season, we managed to take sixth place out of 19 teams. And in the Development League Cup at the group stage, we suffered only one defeat in a match that already meant nothing to us from a tournament point of view. In the playoffs, we reached the final, where we lost in the end to a very experienced and large team "Impulse". As a result, already in the debut season, we became vice-champions of the Development League Cup. The result is more than excellent!
In the current season, Nikolai Alexandrovich decided to “rejuvenate” the Sosnovka team and showed up with players under 16 years old. At the same time, there is no need to talk about a lot of victories and medals. The main goal is to gain valuable experience by playing at a completely new level and prepare for district and regional starts for your age.
Game Sosnovsky district U16 against school Dolgoderevenskoe
As part of the team "Sosnovsky district U16" play Danil Abdrakhmanov , Rinat Vdovin , Vladislav Fazlov , Arthur Khuzhin , Daniil Shakirov (Solnechny village), Makar Antonov , Nikita Kapanets , Denis Popov , Yegor Rudetsky , Aleksey , Arseny Fedorov , , Maxim Fominykh , Alexey Khukhlov , Danil Shulekin (Roshchino settlement), Vladislav Nikitin , Evgeny Novikov , Ilya Rusalin and Nikita Slyusarsky (settlement Esaulsky).
Team Sosnovsky district U16
- Strong young players from our region are gathered here, who also take part in the championships of the Chelyabinsk region for the appropriate age, - explains Nikolai Kornilov. - The guys from Roschino and Esaulsky are pupils of Alexander Yukov and Kyazim Kazimov . Since the guys play mainly against men's teams, it was decided to strengthen with several 18-year-old players who, by their example, show how to act in difficult moments and give all the best in each episode.
– How long have you been training guys? What are your most significant achievements with this team?
- In fact, we are playing in this lineup for the first time. While we are only establishing interaction, we are trying to play as a team. It turns out so far with varying success, but we are progressing from match to match, and this cannot but rejoice. The main goal for the season is the victory in the rural Spartakiad of students of the Chelyabinsk region. Since 2018, the Sosnovsky district team has lost only one game in the framework of the Spartakiad. It happened last season in the final match. This season, we aim to return gold to the Sosnovsky region. Also, as part of the preparation, we will take part in various tournaments of the district and regional levels.
OldStars team Sosnovsky district
"OldStars" is a men's team, where the youngest player is 20 years old, and the most experienced is 35. Anton Grigoryev , Alexey Yeleshchin , Matvey Filatov (Mirny village), Egor Vasiliev (Kasargi village), Nikolai Kornilov , Ivan Kochnev , Mikhail Galimov , Oleg Semenov (Solnechny village), Kyazim Kyazimov , Dmitry Perov , Vyacheslav Spitsin (Esaulsky village), Sergey Rudenko (Dolgoderevenskoye village) and Denis Chernyshov (Chelyabinsk).
Initially Ivan Kochnev proposed the idea to assemble a team of guys from Sosnovka. He also came up with the first "working" name - "Solyanka", because the team brought together players from different settlements. The result was a "hodgepodge". But at some point, the guys decided to abandon this idea. The current name of the team is consonant with one well-known phrase from the world of sports "All Stars", which is translated from English as "All Stars".
- At one time, each player from the current roster was one of the leaders in his team, one might say, the star of the team. Therefore, the word "Stars" was well suited, - says Nikolai Kornilov about how the athletes came up with the name under which they are now performing. - We also changed “All” (“everyone”) to consonant with “Old” (“old / elderly”), since many have been playing for a long time and are a kind of “veterans” of Sosnovka basketball. It turned out to be an original and even funny name. It was a fusion of youth and experience.
Nikolai Kornilov (in red) participates in tournaments as a coach and player
- Your name is on the list of participants in the Old Stars. How do you manage to combine the work of a coach and play yourself at the same time?
- Yes, in this team I act as a player-coach. This is probably the first time I've played this role. Therefore, now it is quite difficult to play and lead the team at the same time. After all, you need to understand in time when to replace players, when to change tactics, to evaluate the actions of an opponent from the outside. As a result, so far it turns out that on the court I don’t quite show myself as I should, and the team game periodically suffers due to untimely decisions. Therefore, we are still on the way of becoming together - besides, we are playing in such a composition for the first time.
In our conversation, Nikolai Kornilov did not forget to mention his fellow countrymen from Dolgoderevensky, whom we wrote about above.
- It turns out that our district is represented by as many as three teams, which is a record for both rural teams and, in principle, for teams from territories not from Chelyabinsk, - Nikolai Alexandrovich emphasizes. - This indicates the great popularity of basketball in the Sosnovsky district. In addition, Oleg Kapanets from the village of Roschino plays in the ChMZ team. Nikita Kapanets from Sosnovka U16 is his son, as well as one of the leaders of the Youth Sports School team, which takes part in the open championship of Chelyabinsk among youths. What a great succession!

One of the Legends matches p. Dolgoderevenskoye (in blue uniform)
10 teams in the first and 15 teams in the second group take part in the tournament. Sosnovskaya "Legend" got into the second.
- The team "Legend" has been participating in the tournaments of the regional basketball federation since 2015, - says team captain Semyon Popov. - Many times became the winners of the Sosnovsky district championship. In April of this year, they won silver in the regional basketball tournament.
For Legend is played by Artyom Ivlev , Semyon Popov , Vasily Paukov , Stanislav Ershov , Pavel Gladkikhi , Kirill Crinitsin , Maxim Osaulko (since long -term agricultural), Andrey Vigininsky Verhininin , Ilya Schukin (Roshchino village), Denis Shlyapin (Krasnoe Pole village), Artyom Sharmanov , Ilya Sharafutdinov , Ilya Kaloev , Vadim Ivanovsky and Vadimovsky 0008 (Chelyabinsk).

The first game of Lokomotiv 2011-13 against Olympus
Tournament organizers report that this season the maximum number of teams in the history of the competition has been announced - 80 teams, of which 37 are regional. Participants are divided into nine groups: five groups for boys and four for girls. In total, the Conar Cup will host about 200 games. The competition will last until December 30th.
With the teams of the Dolgoderevenskaya and Kremenkul schools, which perform under the leadership of Semyon Popov and Alexander Teplyakov , we already know each other well, thanks to their success last season. The team of the Youth Sports School of the Sosnovsky District plays under the leadership of Nikolai Kornilov, with whom we have already talked in detail in the first part of the material. Let's get acquainted with the newcomers of this season - the teams of the Krasnopol and Poletaev schools.
Krasnoe Pole-2011 Team
The girls' team of the Krasnoye Pole School was registered in the age group 2011-2012 year of birth.
- We have six teams as rivals, - says coach Vladimir Dzina . - Of these, three teams of future professionals - the "Palace of Pioneers", the sports school of the Olympic reserve No. 8 and "Cats" from the same sports school. The other three teams are represented by school sports clubs - Pchelki Kunashak, Pervomaisky and the team of the educational center No. 2 in Chelyabinsk.
Alina Zyryanova , Polina Komar , Olga Zhuravleva , Maria Sherstobitova and captain Lilia Nigamatyanova 0008 . Vladimir Yurievich notes that the girls, with the exception of the team captain, have been training for less than a year. They have little gaming experience, but a great desire to participate in serious competitions.
For the first time, Krasnopolie players tried their hand at the 3x3 Orange Ball Championship of the Chelyabinsk Region Basketball Federation in August 2021.
- Of the eight teams in our group, we took only eighth place, - says the coach. Disappointed, silent girls left the playground one by one. And the next day at eight o'clock in the morning everyone was already in the hall. Lots, lots of work. Over mistakes, over technique, over physical form, over tactics.
Vladimir and Daria Dzina
Vladimir Dzina has been coaching the basketball team for the second year.
- By education I am an officer and a military engineer for the repair and operation of automotive equipment, - says Vladimir Yuryevich. - I was accepted to the Krasnopol school without any problems - education allowed. Retraining, thanks to a well-coordinated school team, went quickly and successfully. The sports hall at the school is small, it is as long as a real basketball field in width. Because of what, the girls, leaving the large field, were lost. But difficulties only harden us. We circumvent this problem by agreeing on games in other schools in the Sosnovsky district and Chelyabinsk.
Darya Dzina (second from right) plays in the Russian Championship of the Student Basketball Association for the team "Gvardia" of the Tyumen Industrial University
His daughter Daria , who began to get involved in basketball, played a big role in the development of Vladimir Yuryevich as a coach.
- In general, I started training athletes in 1992, and even a little earlier - from the army, - continues Vladimir Dzina. - Army experience has shown that with the right approach, an athlete can be made from any healthy person, of course, motivation is needed for both you and him. Perhaps he will not become an Olympic champion, but he will definitely become much better than himself today. Throughout the path of an athlete, there is a constant struggle, first of all, with oneself, one’s laziness, one’s complexes, one’s shortcomings, and insecurity. As for basketball, we can say that I got there by accident. At that time, I was engaged in putting athletes on their feet who, after severe injuries and operations, came to my gym on crutches, and my task was not just to teach them to walk again, but to teach them to run faster than before the injury. One of the athletes said that his son, playing basketball at the age of 10, trains for three months on the beaches in Turkey. Oddly enough, I wanted the same for my daughter.
Daria easily passed the physical training tests at the Olympic Training School No. 8 in Chelyabinsk (which, by the way, is now being played against by Krasnoe Pole). The girl was included in the team, but she did not get to Turkey, as well as to the training camp in the Crimea and Sochi. The political situation in the world has changed. As a result - fees in Kashtak.
- Daughter started playing basketball while sitting on the bench. I had to change teams. We moved to the Palace of Pioneers named after Krupskaya. They began to let them play for 3 minutes out of 40. Why am I telling this? To the fact that you can not despair and give up. You can't stop. In addition to basic training, they hired a personal basketball coach, which was inexpensive, due to the fact that I put him and his father on their feet after severe knee injuries, and my son three times. And I watched again, memorized, studied. How to and how not to. Intensity and intelligence in everything. All different. This is me about the girls of the current team. Tall and short, powerful and fragile, kind and aggressive, the ability to use each in the right place, based on its abilities and capabilities. Not breaking them, not changing them, but helping them. To make their eyes burn with a flame, to cultivate restraint to the provocations and rudeness of rivals, developing their best qualities, achieving solidarity and friendship, confidence in each other. Understanding that your mistake will be noticed, understood, forgiven and helped to fix everything, if, like the whole team, you give everything 100%. So, developing and raising my own daughter, I became the coach of the Red Field basketball team.
Darya Dzina, a 10th grade student of the Krasnopol school, is playing in the Russian Championship of the Student Basketball Association for the Guards team of the Tyumen Industrial University.
Among the successes of the Krasnopilska basketball players, two first places in volleyball among the senior and secondary teams of girls from schools in the Sosnovsky district in 2021–2022 can be noted. Vladimir Yuryevich called it a "side effect" of basketball training, where girls develop jumping ability.
- I would also like to add one rather important point, - says Vladimir Dzina at the end of the conversation. - There would be no Red Field team without the participation of parents who are interested in the success of their children, without the school administration, which, realizing that it cannot change the size of the hall, but will not stand aside, will provide us with time for training, balls of a high competitive level, will provide us with uniforms and, if possible, transport. In addition, the Sosnovsky District Administration has now found and allocated funds for the repair of the school gym and the purchase of new equipment. Many thanks to all these people who help to develop our children.
Members of the Lokomotiv Poletaev School team
In the children's basketball championship, the Poletaev School is represented by three youth teams Lokomotiv 2006-2008, Lokomotiv 2010-2012 and Lokomotiv 2011-2013.
– Pupils of the Poletaev school from grades 2 to 10 play in the teams, – says coach Andrey Timachev . – The senior team includes a graduate of school Aleksey Kuchin . Another athlete Egor Eknadiosov comes to train with us from Trubnoy. All teams participate in competitions at the city and region level for the first time.
Andrei Timachev was actively involved in sports during his school years.
Andrei Timachev is 23 years old. Until recently, he himself sat at the desk of the Poletaev school. Throughout his school life, Andrei Vladimirovich was successfully involved in various sports. He played football for five years, tried his hand at basketball and volleyball, lifted weights and ran in the track and field relay race.
Semyon Mordik and Roman Sereda. Last year, Roman was recognized as the best player at the district stage of the basketball tournament among schoolchildren
- In January 2021, I returned to the Poletaev School as a physical education teacher and basketball coach, - says Andrey Timachev. - Since September of this year, I have also recruited a volleyball team. In October, he received a bachelor's degree in physical education from the South Ural State Humanitarian and Pedagogical University.
Andrey Timachev (second from left) and his colleagues took third place in the volleyball tournament among educational institutions of the Sosonvsky district, March 2022.
Now 65 children are training under the guidance of Andrey Vladimirovich.
- I started training with the guys born in 2011 and younger only six months ago, with the older ones for a year and a half, - the coach notes. - At this tournament, we want to gain experience with teams of a higher level, gain confidence and get an incentive to continue training in the basketball section in our village.

2020 | Basketball: Everything You Need to Know About the Olympic Tournament
Schedule, arena, rules and favorites - we tell the most important things about the basketball tournament at the Olympic Games, July 23 - August 8, 2021
date of birth. The game, the meaning of which is to throw the ball into baskets suspended on special structures, was invented in 1892 by a Canadian school teacher James Naismith .
Basketball entered the official program of the Olympic Games in 1936 in Berlin, although he was also present at the 1904 Games as a demonstration discipline. The first Olympic women's basketball tournament was held in 1976 in Montreal.
Schedule and dates
25 July - 8 August. Full schedule here.
The basketball tournament is traditionally one of the longest at the Olympics. It will begin the day after the opening ceremony, with the final match of the women's tournament taking place in Tokyo on the closing day of the Games.
Medal sets: 2
Competitions: Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament
Arena
The Olympic men's and women's basketball tournaments will be held at Saitama Super Arena, located in the suburbs of Tokyo, with a capacity of 21,000 spectators. One of the most modern sports arenas in Japan has already hosted many of the largest sports events - in particular, the world championships in basketball and figure skating.
Tournament rules and structure
Basketball is played by two teams, each of which can have five players on the court at the same time. The goal of the game is to throw the ball into the opponent's ring, which is at a height of 305 centimeters. Accurate throws have different values: one point is awarded to a team for hitting without resistance from the free throw line after an opponent foul, two points for hitting a field goal, three points for hitting a field goal from a long distance (from behind an arc located at a distance 675 centimeters from the ring). The size of the court in this sport is 28 by 15 meters. A basketball match consists of 4 periods of 10 minutes. In case of a draw in regular time, an additional period of 5 minutes is assigned to determine the winner.
The Tokyo Olympics for men and women will each have 12 teams, and the formula for the men's and women's tournaments is the same. At the preliminary stage, the teams are divided into three groups of four teams, and according to the results of round-robin tournaments in groups of two best teams and two more best third-placed teams advance to the playoffs. Quarter-final pairs and the entire playoff bracket will be based on the ranking of teams based on the results of group tournaments.
The success of the Russians and who to follow in Tokyo
In the entire history, the Russian team was able to win Olympic medals only once - it happened in 2012 in London, when the Russian team became the third. But the basketball players of the USSR national team under the guidance of legendary coaches won the gold of the Olympics twice: in 1972 in Munich, the team Vladimir Kondrashin won the legendary final against the US team with the famous decisive hit Alexander Belov in the last second of the game, and in 1988 in Seoul the gold medals were won by the USSR national team, led by Alexander Gomelsky . In addition, the Soviet team won silver medals at the Olympics four times and bronze three times.
