In the United States, polls have never been conducted to determine the best basketball player, such as those practiced in hockey. But to name the best player in the NBA is not difficult - this is Michael Jordan. The name of this defender of the Chicago Bulls club, who won the sixth and, very likely, the last NBA title with his team a month ago, has become a symbol of sports and financial prosperity in America. And in the near future, hardly any other athlete will be able to achieve the financial success that this tall black guy from Brooklyn, who became a multimillionaire thanks to basketball, achieved.
However, not only thanks to him.
Ever since Chicago picked University of North Carolina graduate Michael Jordan in the draft in 1984, Jordan has never cheated on his club. Although sometimes the relationship of the basketball player with the owner of the team Jerry Reinsdorf and its general manager Jerry Krause was, to put it mildly, not very good. “It’s just that the Bulls became my home club, and Chicago my hometown,” Jordan explained the reason for his constancy. - I never wanted to leave, change the team. This probably could only happen if our coach and one of my best friends, Phil Jackson, left. Once he was offered to head the New York Knicks and he almost agreed. At that moment, I also thought: maybe I should go to New York?
Jordan probably regrets not being born a little later. In the mid-1980s, when the NBA, and then the whole world, recognized him, the crazy salary race had not yet begun. It's now, even with the income cap on rookies, the San Antonio Spurs' 1997 draft pick, Tim Duncan, is making $3 million a season. And then the debutants did not even dream of such money. Jordan signed his first really big contract just before the last season, and before that, the strongest basketball player of all time received $ 4 million a year.
By the way, this was preceded by the seemingly strange and shocking transformation of a great basketball player into a bad baseball player. This then, announced by him on October 6, 1993, the sensational decision to move from the Chicago Bulls to the Chicago White Sox baseball team will be called an outstanding publicity stunt. Like, because of this transition, the already fantastic popularity of Jordan has grown even more. But he himself claims that when he left the Bulls, he did not think about it at all. Just tired of basketball, besides, he had an emotional breakdown when the bandits killed his father. He had to change his life to forget about the shock.
In baseball, Jordan, who last took up a bat while still at university, naturally failed. And in 1995, the prodigal son, to everyone's joy, returned to Chicago basketball. And in February 1996, he sat down at the negotiating table - the "gold rush" began in the NBA.
Then even not the most eminent players began to demand several million dollars per season. Jordan first asked Reinsdorf for $25 million over three years. He was afraid that the leader's requests would undermine the club's 180 million budget, but then he realized that the loss of Michael (it was in those days that the Knicks option surfaced) would be a disaster for him. In any case, there was no doubt that the 125 VIP boxes at the United Center Palace, which brought Reinsdorf $500,000 a year, would be empty. As a result, he agreed to sign an unprecedented agreement, the amount of which, according to various sources, is estimated at between $33 million and $36 million, although for only one season, which left both Reinsdorf and Jordan room for maneuver.
The salary determined the position of the basketball player in the team. He used to play a special role in it, and now he has become something of her co-owner. Only he could afford, for example, not attend training for more than three weeks or openly criticize Krause for the unreasonable, in his opinion, sale of striker Jason Caffey. “I do not hide the fact that I often do not share the point of view of the leadership,” he said.
After Chicago won its sixth league title this season, Jordan did something no other player could ever do: demanded a $25 million pay raise for his friend Scottie Pippen, who was by his side throughout career, and last fall went on strike, believing that the owner of the Bulls underestimated him, a top-class forward. And Reinsdorf would certainly have satisfied this requirement, if the fact that Michael Jordan himself would not be in Chicago soon would not be so obvious. After all, Jordan from the very beginning set the condition for continuing his career with the Bulls to extend the contract with Phil Jackson. But at the end of June, he announced that he was leaving basketball - at least for a while. Moreover, he hinted that he does not see a better moment for Jordan to leave. The basketball player himself, however, promised to think about whether he should follow the advice of a friend, but it is obvious to everyone that, most likely, he will follow. Even if the club offers him an even better contract.
However, in any case, Jordan's retirement from basketball will not greatly affect Jordan's financial well-being: in addition to the contract with Chicago, he has always had other equally reliable sources of income.

The contract with the Bulls always brought Jordan less than half of his income. The main part was given by advertising. There is hardly any other athlete who has so many advertising contracts. Jordan has 13 of them - with AMF Bowling, Ball Park, Bijan, CBS Home Video, Chicago Cheviland, Gatorade, Hanes, WorldCom, Oakley, Ray-O-Vac, Wheaties, Wilson and Nike. He advertises everything: sportswear, breakfast cereals, toilet water, underwear.
Most of Jordan's advertising revenue comes from a contract with Nike. This company made it their symbol 13 years ago. It was risky then: Jordan's potential was obvious to everyone, but no one could say with certainty that he would become a real superstar. In addition, the Chicago defender had just recovered from a knee injury (which, fortunately, remained the only serious one in his career). But Nike took a chance and did not lose.
Immediately after the conclusion of the contract, the inscription Air Jordan ("Air Jordan") appeared on the company's sneakers. Since then, she has become his nickname and perhaps the most popular trademark in the world. And soon Nike organized the release of a new clothing line - Jordan Brand. Jordan took an active part in this project. “He told me that not everyone can wear his clothes, but only those to whom it suits. He had excellent taste. Michael even named several NBA teams and players that he would like to dress in the Jordan Brand,” recalls corporation president Phil Knight with a smile.
The Nike-Jordan alliance brought good profits to both parties. But, despite this, recently there have been rumors that it may be terminated. And for reasons that are by no means material in nature: Jordan recently said that he was shocked to learn from the media about how Nike mercilessly exploits the workforce at its enterprises in Southeast Asia. “I have to see everything with my own eyes. If the picture turns out to be what it is described in newspapers and on television, I may stop working with this company, ”he said.
Jordan's demarche seemed strange to many (voluntarily give up tens of millions of dollars!), but those who know him well were not at all surprised: the basketball player has repeatedly declared his active social and political position. However, Nike is confident that Jordan will not leave them, and they are preparing new commercials. If in the past Air Michael has always acted as Superman, now, when he is about to announce his retirement from basketball, he is supposed to be portrayed as an ordinary person. In the new clips, Michael Jordan, most likely, will not hit the ball into the ring, but, on the contrary, will miss, demonstrating that the great ones have weaknesses.

...A huge bright room in a luxurious house on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. This is the headquarters of Jordan's Jump Inc. The president, of course, is Michael Jordan. He loves to sit in a wide chair in a dark suit. He goes for expensive things. Jordan sometimes comes here even on the days of the Bulls' home games - after the end of the game. The activities of Jordan's Jump are diverse (one of Jordan's most successful projects is a chain of restaurants in America, growing year by year). And the profit is very good - about $ 75 million annually.
Jordan feels great in the role of a businessman, although until recently he had very little time for the direct management of the corporation. He himself admits that his presidency is rather conditional. “But I like doing business,” Jordan says. - This is also a kind of game, and very intriguing. True, I would never let business completely take over me, as many business people do. If things start to go worse than before, it's a real shock for them. I take it easy."
This, however, does not mean that Jordan does not care what the situation is in the area of his financial interests. “I take everything I do very seriously,” he says. Friends say that if Jordan had really taken a great interest in business and devoted his whole life to it, he would hardly have gone bankrupt. They think he is a very capable person.
Jordan's favorite subject at the University of North Carolina was mathematics. “It’s a pity that I missed a lot of classes,” he smiles. - In general, to be honest, I don’t know how intelligent I am. I've never taken an IQ test." Jordan's mathematical ability, according to his partners, is especially noticeable when he plays cards. The favorite game of Chicago basketball players is thin. Over time, it has become a ritual: they play cards every time the club goes to the next championship match. Bets range from $10 to $40 per game. Jordan almost never lost. “I considered myself a good tonka specialist. But when I moved to Chicago and sat down to play against Michael, I was shocked,” says Bulls defenseman Ron Harper. - It seems that he sees the opponent's cards! I don’t know, maybe he’s just a cool cheat, but no one has ever managed to convict him of cheating.
Cards and competition for accuracy and distance (basketball players used to have fun after practice - hitting the basket from 15 meters costs a dollar) Jordan's passion for gambling is limited. He rarely visits the casino (unlike, for example, Dennis Rodman, who even during the last, final series with the Utah Jazz managed to fly from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas for a day and spend a tidy sum there).
And one more thing. Jordan never allowed companies to use his name on their products without permission, although many other famous athletes do not pay any attention to this. In computer games, "simulators" in the "Chicago" there is an unnamed basketball player at number 23, who hits the ring almost without a miss. And just a T-shirt with the name Jordan in America is extremely difficult to find.

“People often ask me: what does it mean to be very rich? And I have no idea how to answer them. I never once wondered how much money I have. The main thing is that I have enough of them. Enough for me, my wife and children to live in peace, ”Jordan once said.
He doesn't really like to talk about money. Once he quarreled over this with such an authoritative publication as Sports Illustrated. The correspondent was interested in how much Jordan gained from the transition to baseball. But the athlete considered the question unethical and then for some time refused the magazine an interview.
But if you don't go to Jordan with questions about his financial condition, he is very nice in communication, which is noted by all American journalists, comparing him with some other stars. Big money doesn't seem to have spoiled Air Michael at all, they argue.
