1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan RC #57

  • Buy on eBay.

The 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card is one of the most important cards in the history of the hobby. For modern card collecting, one could argue it's as iconic as the 1952 Topps Baseball Mickey Mantle is for vintage collectors. However, given its popularity and value, MJ rookie fakes are a huge issue, so be careful when shopping.

Those looking beyond his first Fleer card are in luck as there are also many more key Michael Jordan cards from the 1980s.

1996 SPx Michael Jordan Autograph

  • Buy on eBay.

The 1996 SPx Michael Jordan Autograph is his first signed basketball card. These die-cut beauties feature on-card signatures and rarely surface for sale.

1996-97 E-X2000 A Cut Above Michael Jordan #5

  • Buy on eBay.

1996-97 Flair Showcase Legacy Collection Row 2 Michael Jordan #23 #/150

  • Buy on eBay.

The road of high-end Michael Jordan cards is paved with a ton of low-numbered parallels. While the 1996-97 Flair Showcase Legacy Collection Row 2 Michael Jordan isn't the rarest, it is certainly one of the most beautiful. Mixing an action shot in the foreground with an emotional foil portrait in the background, the card beams with elegance.

1996-97 Metal Net-Rageous Michael Jordan #5

  • Buy on eBay.

The 1996-97 Metal Net-Rageous Michael Jordan is another outrageous mid-90s insert that's ridiculously tough to find. Loud and proud, cards from the die-cut set can be found 1:288 packs.

1997-98 E-X2001 Jambalaya Michael Jordan #6

  • Buy on eBay.

Another wild insert from the era, 1997-98 E-X2001 Jambalaya focused on basketball's best dunkers. And when you're talking about the game's best dunkers, Michael Jordan is king. Inserted at a very tough rate of 1:720 packs, Jambalaya remains one of the most desirable insert sets ever created.

1997-98 Fleer Thrill Seekers Michael Jordan #7

  • Buy on eBay.

Mixing a holofoil shimmer, a matte front and some horrible fonts, there's no doubt what era the 1997-98 Fleer Thrill Seekers Michael Jordan came from. Cards in the ten-card set are a case hit, falling 1:288 packs.

1997-98 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Michael Jordan #23 #/100

  • Buy on eBay.

The grand-daddy of parallels, if you've got a 1997-98 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Michael Jordan, you've got a few tuition payments for your children's college education. And textbooks. And a lifetime supply of Kraft Dinner. The blazing red background is perfectly appropriate for Jordan. Although numbered to 100, only 90 of the famed Precious Metal Gems cards are red.

The remaining 10 cards are green. And if you have one of those, you may be able to trade it for a house, white picket fence and all.

1997-98 Ultra Star Power Supreme Michael Jordan #SPS1

  • Buy on eBay.

If you haven't figured it out by now, Fleer ruled the wild insert designs, parallels and tough pulls of the mid- to late-1990s. The 1997-98 Ultra Star Power Supreme Michael Jordan is a case hit parallel that mixes a die-cut design with holofoil. Individual singles in the 20-card set appear 1:288 packs of 1997-98 Ultra Series 2 Basketball.

1997-98 Ultra Stars Gold Michael Jordan #1

  • Buy on eBay.

1997-98 Ultra Stars was the set's Series One case hit. Of those, ten percent were given the Ultra Stars Gold treatment. Basically, the 1997-98 Ultra Stars Gold Michael Jordan is an impossible parallel of a nearly impossible set. And it's got all the flash and jazz collectors expect and love.

1997-98 Upper Deck Game Jersey Michael Jordan #GJ13

  • Buy on eBay.

The first Michael Jordan game-used jersey card might not be the prettiest. But it's still the first. With 22 cards in the set, even odds of one per case would make it tough. Try 1:2,500 packs for any given card in the set. That's 1:55,000 packs for the 1997-98 Upper Deck Game Jerseys Michael Jordan.

There's also an autographed version that is hand-numbered to 23 copies.

1998-99 Fleer Tradition Playmakers Theatre Michael Jordan #9 #/100

  • Buy on eBay.

Limited to 100 copies, the 1998-99 Fleer Tradition Playmakers Theatre Michael Jordan has a lot going for it. It's embossed and has some great gold shine. Collectors should beware of versions that have neither embossing or serial numbers. These were likely in the Fleer archives when the company went out of business and the assets were sold off.

1998-99 Hoops Slam Bams Michael Jordan #1 #/100

  • Buy on eBay.

The 1998-99 Hoops Slam Bams Michael Jordan is a strange beast. While it has some great photography, the overall design is among the busiest you'll ever find. Oh yeah, it's numbered to 100 copies so it commands attention whenever it pops up.

1998-99 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Michael Jordan #1 #/50

  • Buy on eBay.

Instead of numbering to 100 like the previous year, the 1998-99 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Michael Jordan has just 50 copies. The parallel's immense popularity and the low numbering make this one of the ultimate Michael Jordan card prizes.

1998-99 SkyBox Molten Metal Fusion Michael Jordan #41 #/250

  • Buy on eBay.

The 1998-99 SkyBox Molten Metal Fusion Michael Jordan is unique with its tiny die-cut dots that combine to create the legend's portrait. While the basic Fusion parallel is numbered to 250, a Titanium version is much tougher with just 40 copies.

1998-99 SkyBox Premium Star Rubies Michael Jordan #23 #/50

  • Buy on eBay.

Resembling something Pacific might have created with their Prism lines a few years earlier, the 1998-99 SkyBox Premium Star Rubies Michael Jordan is one of the most desired parallel cards of all-time. Numbered to 50, it pictures Jordan preparing to drive to the hoop.

1998-99 SkyBox Thunder Noyz Boyz Michael Jordan #9

  • Buy on eBay.

Who names these cards? Although the title might be horrible, it's memorable—kind of like those late-night TV jingles that stick with you for months on end. The distinct die-cut design and rarity (1:300 packs) make the 1998-99 SkyBox Thunder Noyz Boyz Michael Jordan one of the greatest insert cards in the hobby.

1998-99 Upper Deck Game Jersey Michael Jordan

  • Buy on eBay.

Building on the 1997-98 Upper Deck insert, the Game Worn Jersey line in 1998-99 Upper Deck Basketball offers another key MJ jersey relic card.

In addition, Upper Deck released six different Michael Jordan autograph jersey cards in 1998-99, all of which are numbered to 23. These all rank among the best Michael Jordan cards ever made.

1999 Upper Deck Employee Game Jersey Michael Jordan #/275

  • Buy on eBay.

Upper Deck staff have gotten some amazing exclusive cards over the years. Perhaps none are more beautiful than the 1999 Upper Deck Employee Game Jersey Michael Jordan. Numbered to 275, the card pictures Jordan making his original last shot. The card was produced just for staff and wasn't inserted in packs.

1999-00 Upper Deck HoloGrFX Shoetime Autograph Michael Jordan #MJA #/23

  • Buy on eBay.

When you think of Michael Jordan, a handful of iconic things come to mind: the number 23, his impressive dunks and his signature shoes. The Air Jordan sneaker line is bigger than the game. Yet, it has only appeared on a handful of Michael Jordan cards. The 1999-00 Upper Deck HoloGrFX Shoetime Autograph Michael Jordan is among the first of just a few signed shoe cards of the great.

2000-01 Ultimate Collection Signatures Gold Michael Jordan #MJG Autograph #/25

  • Buy on eBay.

The greatest strength of the 2000-01 Ultimate Collection Signatures Gold Michael Jordan is its simplicity. And autograph. And limited numbering to 25.

2003-04 UD Glass 1-2 Combo Jersey Autographs LeBron James, Michael Jordan #LJMJ #/10

  • Buy on eBay.

The 2003-04 UD Glass 1-2 Combo Jersey LeBron James/Michael Jordan is the only card from LeBron James' rookie year to combine the pair's signatures and jersey swatches. Numbered to only ten copies, the design is somewhat understated given its significance. The pair signed many more cards together since then, but this is one of the best.

2003-04 Exquisite Collection Michael Jordan #3 #/225

  • Buy on eBay.

When was the last time you saw a modern base card that wasn't a rookie card go for $500+? It's unheard of — almost. Michael Jordan and 2003-04 Exquisite Collection are two very special hobby beasts. One is the greatest player, the other is the greatest set. MJ has many other impressive Exquisite cards, as well.

47 Most Valuable Michael Jordan Cards (2022)

by joe | Last Updated: February 27, 2022

Michael Jordan is without a doubt the most iconic basketball player of all time. As his cards and other memorabilia continue to increase in value, it is evident that his legacy will live on forever.

Here is a list of the most valuable Michael Jordan cards, including base cards, inserts, die cuts, autos, patches and refractors. It will give you a good idea of just how valuable Michael Jordan cards can be, under the right circumstances.

Most Valuable Michael Jordan Cards from the Early Years

1986 Fleer Michael Jordan #57

PSA Pop Report

On average a PSA 10 of this Michael Jordan rookie cards sells for around $300,000, though it has sold for as much as $700,000+. Although his rookie season was in 1984, this was his first widely produced card from a staple basketball card brand. While the PSA population count is quite high, it is difficult to come by this card in mint condition. Combine that with the hobby’s affinity for rookie cards and you have a recipe for a 6-figure evaluation of Michael Jordan’s 1986 Fleer rookie in Gem Mint condition.

Other notable rookies from this set include Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, and Hakeem Olajuwon.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 20,895 times with 319 being graded Gem Mint 10 and 2,847 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

1986 Fleer Michael Jordan Sticker #8

PSA Pop Report

On 10/27/2021 a PSA 10 sold for $75,000.

Grading Breakdown

This rare and often off-center Michael Jordan rookie card has been graded by PSA 11,099 times with 121 being graded Gem Mint 10 and 1,970 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

1987 Michael Jordan Fleer #59

PSA Pop Report

On 1/27/2022 a PSA 10 sold for $23,400. This Michael Jordan “second year” card has to be the most plain, basic design of this entire list. This also happens to be the rookie year of Scottie Pippen.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 12,976 times with 208 being graded Gem Mint 10.

1987 Fleer Michael Jordan Sticker #2

PSA Pop Report

On 4/30/2021 a PSA 10 sold for $47,000. These stickers are notorious for having centering issues, which can easily be distinguished between the striping and star pattern along the left side. The incredibly scarce number of PSA 10s is further indication of sports card printing issues back in the 1980s.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 7,200 times with 24 being graded Gem Mint 10.

1988 Fleer Michael Jordan #17

PSA Pop Report

On 1/17/2022 a PSA 10 sold for $4,550. The distinct gradient border of these basketball cards from 1988 makes their centering immediately apparent. For some basketball card collectors, this type of eye appeal is important, and they’d rather have a centered PSA 6 than an off-centered PSA 8, for example.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 16,113 times with 565 being graded Gem Mint 10.

1988 Fleer All Star Michael Jordan #120

PSA Pop Report

On 1/18/2022 a PSA 10 sold for $5,800. This may be the most iconic pose for Michael Jordan in all of his cards. It came during the 1988 Slam Dunk contest when he went toe-to-toe with Dominique Wilkins from the Atlanta Hawks. Jordan would go on to be the winner and this dunk came when Jordan took off from the free throw line.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 10,138 times with 362 being graded Gem Mint 10.

Most Valuable Michael Jordan Cards from 90s and 2000s – Refractors, Die-Cuts, Auto, Patches

1997 Upper Deck Game Jerseys Michael Jordan #GJ13S

PSA Pop Report

On 2/4/2021 a PSA 7 sold for $1,440,000.

Michael Jordan autographed 23 of these cards and they were serial numbered by hand. This sale was near the peak of the early 2021 price boom, so its hard to say if that price would be lower today or not.

Despite the peak market sale, this will likely continue to be one of the most valuable Michael Jordan cards out there, along with his rookie card and Precious Metal Gems.

Game Jersey cards were inserted into 1 out of 2500 1997 Upper Deck Series One packs.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 1 time as a Gem Mint 10.

1997 Skybox Precious Metal Gems Michael Jordan #23

PMG Red parallel is serial numbered to 100PMG Green is serial numbered to 10.

PSA Pop Report

On 12/11/2020 a PSA 6 of the red PMG parallel sold for $228,000. The more rare 1996 Metal Universe Michael Jordan PMG Green sold on 12/09/2020 for $915,000. It wasn’t graded, simply labeled authentic by PSA.

Some collectors might argue that this card, and not his 1986 Fleer rookie card, is in fact the holy grail of Michael Jordan basketball cards.

Precious Metal Gems are rare and susceptible to chipping, thus grades are not as big of a factor as they are in other basketball card values.

This card continues to be one of the most valuable Michael Jordan cards.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 28 times with being graded Gem Mint 10 and 5 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

2008 Skybox Precious Metal Gems Michael Jordan #23

PSA Pop Report

On 1/30/2022 a PSA 10 sold for $259,316. A little more than a decade later, Skybox brought back the Precious Metal Gems, this time in a strikingly different design. Still, the rarity of the green PMG being serial numbered to just 50 vaults it up the value ladder quite high.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 1 time as a Gem Mint 10.

1998 Fleer Tradition Playmakers Theatre Michael Jordan #9PT

PSA Pop Report

On 1/30/2021 a PSA 10 sold for $186,960.

It is Serial Numbered to 100

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 17 times with 3 being graded Gem Mint 10.

1999 Upper Deck Game Jerseys Autographed Michael Jordan #GJ10A

PSA Pop Report

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 2 times with 1 being graded Gem Mint 10 and 1 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

1997 Skybox Premium Star Rubies Michael Jordan #29 & #235

#29#235

PSA Pop Report

On 10/27/2021 a PSA 9 sold for $87,000.

There are two Star Rubies in this set, one from Series 1 (#29) and one from Series 2(#239).

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 14 times with being graded Gem Mint 10 and 7 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

1997 Skybox E-X2001 Essential Credentials Future Michael Jordan #9

PSA Pop Report

On 2/11/2020 a PSA 6 sold for $83,558. It is Serial Numbered to 72.

In addition, there is a Essential Credential Now parallel version with a lime green coloring serial numbered to only 9. Neither PSA nor Beckett have graded this card. Where are they? What would they be worth? If one did come up for sale, how high would it move up in the list of most valuable Michael Jordan cards?

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 11 times with 1 being graded Gem Mint 10 and 5 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

2006 Upper Deck (UD) Chronology MVP Winners Autographs Michael Jordan #MVPMJ

PSA Pop Report

On 11/24/2020 a BGS 9 sold for $80,990.

Interestingly, PSA has no pop report showing they graded this card, but they do have a sale of a PSA 6 listed for $8,300. This is probably just a database error, but in reality this card has only ever been graded by any grading company a handful of times.

It is Serial Numbered to 50.

1996 Flair Showcase Legacy Collection Michael Jordan #Row0

PSA Pop Report

On 5/21/21 a PSA 10 sold for $68,000.

The PSA populationfor the Flair Showcase Legacy Collection is divided up into Row 0, Row 1 and Row 2 cards, but I combined them all in this case.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 71 times with 8 being graded Gem Mint 10 and 29 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

1997 Skybox E-X2001 Jambalaya Michael Jordan #6

PSA Pop Report

On 8/28/2020 a PSA 10 sold for $58,600. Although it would make sense that this design and card name originated in basketball given the “jam” reference, this unique oval die-cut design and Jambalaya name carried over into other sports cards, as well as Marvel Comic cards.

Given how much the market has grown since the last 10 sold, I think if one went to market today, it could fetch $100,000 or more.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 46 times with 14 being graded Gem Mint 10 and 17 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

1997 Fleer Ultra Ultra Stars Gold Michael Jordan #1US

PSA Pop Report

On 12/19/2021 a PSA 7 sold for $33,600.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 29 times with 5 being graded Gem Mint 10 and 7 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

1998 Skybox Thunder Noyz Boyz Michael Jordan #9NB

PSA Pop Report

On 3/23/2021 a PSA 10 sold for $31,000.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 83 times with 23 being graded Gem Mint 10 and 46 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

1997 NBA Hoops High Voltage 500 Volts Michael Jordan #14HV

PSA Pop Report

On 5/24/2021 a PSA 8 sold for $23,300.

The last time a 10 sold was for $8,200 on 3/20/2019 – considering a PSA 8 has roughly 10x value during that same period of time, I don’t think $85,000 is too high an estimate.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 30 times with 4 being graded Gem Mint 10 and 6 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

1997 Flair Showcase Legacy Collection Michael Jordan – Row 0

PSA Pop Report

On 1/15/2021 a PSA 10 sold for $22,750.

Rows 1, 2, and 3 have even lower pop counts and next to no sales data. So its difficult to estimate their value. However, I think these cards could easily fetch between $20,000 – $50,000 if they hit the market today.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 33 times with 16 being graded Gem Mint 10 and 13 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

1996 Skybox E-X2000 Credentials Michael Jordan #9

PSA Pop Report

On 9/7/2020 a PSA 9 sold for $21,500. Because only 2 PSA 10s exist, I think it’s not unreasonable to think one could sell in excess of $100,000.

On 10/27/2021, a PSA 10 of Kobe Bryant’s Credentials rookie sold for $617,460 at a Goldin Elite Auction.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 40 times with 2 being graded Gem Mint 10 and 15 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

1993 Topps Finest Base Refractors Michael Jordan #1

PSA Pop Report

On 11/20/2021 a PSA 10 sold for $19,800.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 670 times with 41 being graded Gem Mint 10 and 393 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

1999 Upper Deck MJ Master Collection Signature Performances MJ1-MJ10

PSA Pop Report

On 8/11/2021 a PSA 10 sold for $18,450.

The pop is from all cards in the set, so if each card has a SN to 50, there should be 500 in existence. Yet only 34 have ever been graded by PSA.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 34 times with 18 being graded Gem Mint 10 and 13 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

1997 Fleer Ultra Star Power Supreme Michael Jordan #1SPS

PSA Pop Report

On 8/17/2021 a PSA 10 sold for $17,900.

On 1/27/2022 a BGS 9.5 sold for $13,500.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 8 times with 7 being graded Gem Mint 10 and 1 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

2003 SP Signature Edition Authentic Signatures Gold Michael Jordan #AS-MJ

PSA Pop Report

On 7/1/2021 a PSA 9 sold for $12,400.

It is Serial Numbered to 50.

Grading Breakdown

1996 Skybox Z-Force Big Men On The Court Z-Peat Michael Jordan #4

PSA Pop Report

On 1/25/2021 a PSA 9 sold for $9,300.

A BGS 9 Z – Peat just sold for $5,500

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 46 times with 8 being graded Gem Mint 10 and 7 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

1998 NBA Hoops Slam Bams Michael Jordan #1SB

PSA Pop Report

On 1/22/2019 a PSA 9 sold for $9,000.

Since there are no 10s and the pop is so low, based on how the market has increased since the last sale I would think this card fetches around $40,000.

Grading Breakdown

This card has been graded by PSA 9 times with being graded Gem Mint 10 and 4 receiving a PSA 9 Mint.

Jordan DOME

The story of the training facility that Warner Brothers built for Michael Jordan while filming Space Jam.

The story of the training facility that Warner Brothers built for Michael Jordan during the filming of Space Jam.

THIS IS THE STORY OF THE MYTHICAL DOME, THE SECRET FACILITY DESIGNED FOR MICHAEL JORDAN TO GO FROM BASEBALL PLAYER BACK TO NBA Finals MVP.

In 1995, Michael Jordan returned to the NBA after a year and a half absence. He joined the Chicago Bulls in the middle of a season that ended in an embarrassing defeat for them in the Eastern Conference semi-finals to Orlando, but despite the loss, Mike agreed to star in the movie Space Jam. According to Tim Grover, MJ's personal trainer for physical training, at this moment the fire of competitive spirit in Michael broke out with renewed vigor.

Jordan agreed to filming, but that didn't mean he was putting basketball on the back burner. Michael's main condition was to provide conditions for training in the immediate vicinity of the set. Then the guys from Warner Bros. marked out the parking lot and dragged a few mobile racks. But Tim Grover immediately explained to them that this is not a training area for MJ and it will not work that way. He knew Michael wouldn't like the idea of training in the parking lot. He needed the perfect gym and basketball court next to the filming hangars.

Jordan agreed to shoot, but that didn't mean he was putting basketball on the back burner.

At that time, under an inflatable dome, a full-size basketball court was organized, where Michael Jordan practiced every evening. In less than 6 weeks, an air conditioning system was installed under the inflatable dome, locker rooms and showers were built, and the most modern training equipment was brought into the "dome". According to Tim Grover, it was the most technologically advanced training facility at that time. But its main advantage for Warner Bros. was the location. Due to the fact that the hall was equipped next to the set, Michael was always there when it came time to shoot the next scene with his participation.

The only keys to the gym were held by security, basketball stage/practice coordinator Nate Bellamy, and Tim Grover himself. Michael's training consisted of working with heavy weights. Many acted as sparring partners, the best basketball players of that time came to train with Michael in the "bubble" (bubble).

Undoubtedly, many celebrities wished to enter this hall. It has become literally a closed club for the elite. Everyone wanted to hang out on set and watch Michael and his front row friends play. Tim Grover says that the level of trash talk in the "bubble" was outrageous. The new hall was filled with a unique atmosphere and competitive spirit, in which Michael Jordan had to prepare for the most important season in his career.

For the first training sessions at Jordan DOME, professional players were invited who lived near the filming location, as well as basketball players who were involved in the filming (Patrick Ewing, Sean Bradley). Later, other current NBA superstars (Magic Johnson, Reggie Miller) came to train with Michael.

The game went up to 7 points, which left no time for buildup, any throw was evaluated as one performance point. There were no referees, fouls were determined independently, which made the game more rigid and principled. The level of players was comparable to the NBA All-Star Game, but if someone decided to score from above, he had to be prepared for the fact that he could be dropped on the floor. As a rule, such gaming sessions lasted about three hours. Often after the game, the athletes stayed to practice the throw or work with the iron.

The conditions created for MJ contributed not only to successful training, but also to the operational work of the film crew. Space Jam director Joe Pitka said that Michael was very easy to talk to. They easily got along and often made fun of each other.

At the same time, Pitka understood that being in new conditions is a big stress for an athlete. Not everyone is able to endure many hours of work on camera, especially with the use of green screen technology. Then, to make Michael feel more natural, a special comedic corpse of 5-6 people was created, who played the role of cartoons. Otherwise, Michael would have to communicate with sensors and other invisible objects in the frame, which could cause difficulties for an unprepared actor.

Few people would have expected that an inflatable gym on the set would help Michael Jordan to return to his former condition and go on another campaign for the championship, but it was this decision that helped him.

Also, if Michael didn't want to leave, he liked to end his workout with a game of cards. On good days, up to 100 first-class athletes gathered in the hall. Glen Rice, Michael Jordan, Rod Strickland, Alonzo Morning and Larry Johnson could play on one team, while Tim Hardaway, Reggie Miller, Charles Oakley, Patrick Ewing and Grant Hill played on the other. Chris Mullin, Gary Peyton and, of course, Charles Barkley came to Jodan DOME to support the form.

Reggie Miller admitted that the main purpose of his time in Jordan's DOME was to find a weak spot in Michael that he could exploit during the regular season. He always wanted to be on the opposing team and often their games ended in one-on-one isolations.

Three hundred million dollars in the basket

In the United States, polls have never been conducted to determine the best basketball player, which is practiced, for example, in hockey. But to name the best player in the NBA is not difficult - this is Michael Jordan. The name of this defender of the Chicago Bulls club, who won the sixth and, very likely, the last NBA title with his team a month ago, has become a symbol of sports and financial prosperity in America. Last year alone, according to Forbes magazine, Michael Jordan earned $78.3 million. And in the near future, hardly any other athlete will be able to achieve the financial success that this tall black guy from Brooklyn, who became a multimillionaire thanks to basketball, achieved.
However, not only thanks to him.

The most expensive
Since choosing University of North Carolina graduate Michael Jordan in the draft in 1984, Jordan has never cheated on his club. Although sometimes the relationship of the basketball player with the owner of the team Jerry Reinsdorf and its general manager Jerry Krause was, to put it mildly, not very good. “It’s just that the Bulls became my home club, and Chicago my hometown,” Jordan explained the reason for his constancy. “I never wanted to leave, change teams. This, probably, could only happen if our coach and one of my best friends - Phil Jackson. One day he was offered to head the New York Knicks, and he almost agreed. At that moment, I also thought: maybe I should go to New York?
Jordan probably regrets not being born a little later. In the mid-80s, when the NBA recognized him, and then the whole world, the crazy salary race had not yet begun. It's now, even with the income cap on rookies, San Antonio Spurs' 1997 pick Tim Duncan is making $3 million a season. And then the debutants did not even dream of such money. Jordan signed his first really big contract just before the last season, and before that, the strongest basketball player of all time received $ 4 million a year.
By the way, this was preceded by the seemingly strange and shocking transformation of a great basketball player into a bad baseball player. This then, announced by him on October 6, 1993, the sensational decision to move from the Chicago Bulls to the Chicago White Sox baseball team will be called an outstanding publicity stunt. Like, because of this transition, the already fantastic popularity of Jordan has grown even more. But he himself claims that when he left the Bulls, he did not think about it at all. Just tired of basketball, besides, he had an emotional breakdown when the bandits killed his father. He had to change his life to forget about the shock.
In baseball, Jordan, who last took up a bat while still at university, naturally failed. And in 1995, the prodigal son, to everyone's joy, returned to "Chicago" basketball. And in February 1996, he sat down at the negotiating table - the "gold rush" began in the NBA.
Then even not the most eminent players began to demand several million dollars per season. Jordan first asked Reinsdorf for $25 million over three years. He was afraid that the leader's requests would undermine the club's 180 million budget, but then he realized that the loss of Michael (it was in those days that the Knicks option surfaced) would be a disaster for him. In any case, there was no doubt that the 125 VIP boxes in the United Center Palace, which brought Reinsdorf $500,000 a year, would be empty. As a result, he agreed to sign an unprecedented agreement, the amount of which, according to various sources, is estimated at between $33 million and $36 million. However, only for one season, which left both Reinsdorf and Jordan room for maneuver.
The salary also determined the position of the basketball player in the team. He used to play a special role in it, and now he has become something of her co-owner. Only he could afford, for example, not attend training for more than three weeks or openly criticize Krause for the unreasonable, in his opinion, sale of striker Jason Caffey. "I do not hide the fact that I often do not share the point of view of the leadership," he said.
After Chicago won its sixth league title this season, Jordan allowed himself an act impossible for any other player - he demanded from Reinsdorf that he increase the salary of his friend Scotty Pippen to $ 25 million, who was by his side throughout his career. and last fall he went on strike, believing that the owner of the Bulls underestimated him, a top-class forward. And Reinsdorf would certainly satisfy this requirement, if it were not so obvious that Michael Jordan himself would not be in Chicago soon. After all, Jordan from the very beginning set the condition for continuing his career with the Bulls to extend the contract with Phil Jackson. But at the end of June, he announced that he was leaving basketball - at least for a while. Moreover, he hinted that he does not see a better moment for Jordan to leave. The basketball player himself, however, promised to think about whether he should follow the advice of a friend, but it is obvious to everyone that, most likely, he will follow. Even if the club offers him an even better contract.
However, in any case, his departure from basketball will not greatly affect Jordan's financial well-being: in addition to the contract with Chicago, he has always had other, equally reliable sources of income.

Most advertised
The contract with the Bulls has always brought Jordan less than half of his income. The main part was given by advertising. There is hardly any other athlete who has so many advertising contracts. Jordan has thirteen of them - with AMF Bowling, Ball Park, Bijan, CBS Home Video, Chicago Cheviland, Gatorade, Hanes, WorldCom, Oakley, Ray-O-Vac, Wheaties, Wilson and Nike. He advertises everything: sportswear, breakfast cereals, toilet water, underwear.
Most of Jordan's advertising revenue comes from a contract with Nike. This company made it their symbol thirteen years ago. It was risky then: Jordan's potential was obvious to everyone, but no one could say with certainty that he would become a real superstar. In addition, the Chicago defender had just recovered from a knee injury (which, fortunately, remained the only serious one in his career). But Nike took a chance and did not lose.
Immediately after the conclusion of the contract, the inscription Air Jordan ("Air Jordan") appeared on the company's sneakers. Since then, she has become his nickname and perhaps the most popular trademark in the world. And soon Nike organized the release of a new clothing line - Jordan Brand. Jordan took an active part in this project. “He told me that not everyone can wear his clothes, but only those to whom it suits. He turned out to have excellent taste. Michael even named several NBA teams and players whom he would like to wear Jordan Brand,” recalls with a smile Corporation President Phil Knight.
The alliance between Nike and Jordan brought good profits to both parties. But, despite this, recently there have been rumors that it may be terminated. And for reasons that are by no means material in nature: Jordan recently said that he was shocked to learn from the media about how Nike mercilessly exploits the workforce at its enterprises in Southeast Asia. "I have to see everything with my own eyes. If the picture is the way it is described in newspapers and on television, I may stop working with this company," he said.
Jordan's demarche seemed strange to many (voluntarily give up tens of millions of dollars!), But those who are well acquainted with him were not at all surprised: the basketball player has repeatedly declared his active social and political position. However, Nike is confident that Jordan will not leave them, and they are preparing new commercials. If in the past Air Michael has always acted as Superman, now, when he is about to announce his retirement from basketball, he is supposed to be portrayed as an ordinary person. In the new clips, Michael Jordan, most likely, will not hit the ball into the ring, but, on the contrary, miss, demonstrating that the great ones also have weaknesses.

Most business
...A huge bright room in a luxurious house on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. This is the headquarters of Jordan`s Jump Inc. The president, of course, is Michael Jordan. He loves to sit in a wide chair in a dark suit. He goes for expensive things. Jordan sometimes comes here even on the days of the Bulls' home games - after the end of the game. The activities of Jordan`s Jump are diverse (one of Jordan's most successful projects is a restaurant chain in America, growing year by year). And the profit is very good --- about $75 million annually.
Jordan feels great in the role of a businessman, although until recently he had very little time for the direct management of the corporation. He himself admits that his presidency is rather conditional. "But I like doing business," says Jordan. , for them this is a real shock. I take it calmly. "
This, however, does not mean that Jordan does not care what the situation is in the area of his financial interests. “I take everything I do very seriously,” he says. Friends say that if Jordan had really taken a great interest in business and devoted his whole life to it, he would hardly have gone bankrupt. They think he is a very capable person.
Jordan's favorite subject at the University of North Carolina was mathematics. "It's a pity that I missed a lot of classes," he smiles. Jordan's mathematical ability, according to his partners, is especially noticeable when he plays cards. Favorite basketball game "Chicago" - thin. Over time, it has become a ritual: they play cards every time the club goes to the next championship match. Bets range from $10 to $40 per game. Jordan almost never lost. “I thought I was a good tonka player. But when I moved to Chicago and sat down to play against Michael, I was shocked,” says Bulls defenseman Ron Harper. “It seems that he sees the opponent’s cards! I don’t know, maybe he just a cool cheat, but no one has ever managed to convict him of deception.
Cards and competition for accuracy and throwing the ball (basketball players usually had fun with this after training - getting into the ring from 15 meters costs a dollar) Jordan's passion for gambling is limited. He rarely goes to the casino (unlike, for example, Dennis Rodman, who even during the last, final series with the Utah Jazz managed to fly from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas for a day and blow a tidy sum there).
And further. Jordan never allowed companies to use his name on their products without permission, although many other famous athletes do not pay any attention to this. In computer games, "simulators" in the "Chicago" is an unnamed basketball player at number 23, who hits the ring almost without a miss. And just a T-shirt with the name Jordan in America is extremely difficult to find.

Favorite
“People often ask me: what does it mean to be very rich? And I have no idea what to answer them. I never once wondered how much money I have. The main thing is that I have enough of them. Enough to live calmly I, my wife and children," Jordan once said.
He doesn't really like to talk about money. Once he quarreled over this with such an authoritative publication as Sports Illustrated. The correspondent was interested in how much Jordan gained from the transition to baseball. But the athlete considered the question unethical and then for some time refused the magazine an interview.
But if you don’t go to Jordan with questions about his financial condition, he is very nice in communication, which is noted by all American journalists, comparing him with some other stars. Big money doesn't seem to have spoiled Air Michael at all, they argue. For example, at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, Jordan said that the American Dream Team should have settled, like all other athletes, in the Olympic village, and not in a luxury hotel with numerous security guards. (However, Jordan later admitted that in this case the team would hardly have found a minute to rest: the fans, and other athletes, for many of whom the members of the “dream team” were idols, simply would not let them pass. )
Jordan is used to the fact that a person who earns a lot has to spend a lot. And in general, be generous. Therefore, he, like most wealthy people, is involved in charity work.
Jordan's hobbies are no different from those accepted in a stellar environment: good clothes, sports cars (Michael prefers Mercedes and speeds over 150 mph, although, according to those who traveled with him, he does not drive well), golf. He plays golf very well and has already received invitations to participate in professional tournaments. There is an assumption that at the end of his basketball career, he will take up golf. Jordan himself has not yet confirmed or denied this. He only says that in the future he would like to devote more time to his family.
His two sons, daughter and wife would certainly benefit if Jordan did retire from basketball. Who will lose? Other. Fans, because they will lose the idol that they worshiped for many years and for which they went to stadiums. The Bulls, although they will save on wages, will lose, because the matches with the team will not gather as many spectators as before, and the team will not see the seventh championship title in the coming years.
