I was deeply saddened by the death of an elderly passenger, Margaret Masson, but when I saw the mangled cars, I felt relieved that there were no more deaths. My decision to come immediately was certainly the right one. I realized this on the way to the hospital, where injured passengers were treated. I tried to meet with as many victims as possible and talked to Masson's inconsolable relatives, to whom I expressed my deepest condolences.
We learned a lot from this accident, which, as it soon became clear, was due to the technical condition of the track - which was completely beyond our control.
