We have always heard that kiteboarding is scary or kiteboarding is dangerous. It seemed that whenever we talked about it in conversation, everyone had an opinion on how difficult it was.

We love to add adventure to our travels and kite surfing seemed to be the best adventure on the water. When Maui Tourism asked us what activities we would like to do on our Hawaiian adventure, kiteboarding was definitely at the top of our list.

Kiteboarding Maui

Dave and I woke up as usual early from our deep sleep at the pleasant Paia Inn. We were excited to try kiteboarding, but neither of us told each other how nervous we were about getting on the board. We only learned this after our lesson ended.

We watched kiteboarding from afar as the kitesurf guys jumped and flipped in the air showing off their wicked skills in choppy waters and believed all the warnings we heard. "You have to have a lot of upper body strength", "Kites are very difficult to handle", and "Kiteboarding is only for big strong men".

These are the myths we've heard about kiteboarding in the past that scared the both of us. What if we were thrown into the sea or flew so high in the air that we were crashed into the ocean and our necks were broken?

It's all nonsense. Kiteboarding is fun, safe and pretty easy to get the hang of.

Adventure Travel at its finest - kiteboarding school

We met our guides Natasha and Tim at Kite Beach in Kahului and in no time we were in our life jackets, waist belts and helmets. I carried the surfboard and Natasha carried the kite and we went to the next sandy bay for land training.

Our three-hour lesson began by learning how to set up a kite, how to read the wind, and how to move a kite on land. But the first thing you need to do is blow it up. Who knew? The C kite needs to be inflated and Natasha told me to keep pumping until it was as heavy as a basketball.

After the kite is inflated, you must position it in the correct wind direction. The inflated part of the kite must be pointing into the wind so that it can easily fly over the kite without trapping the material and blowing it away. Now you can prepare your lines.

There are long lines holding the snake to your body and it is important that you unravel them before you begin. The length of the lines varies depending on the wind. I couldn't believe how subtle the movements must be to fly a kite. Most people feel like they have to tug and pull with furious force, but it's as simple as bending your wrist and pulling the line one small inch at a time. Once I found the sweet spot, I took control of it.

Kiteboarding at sea

Dave really rocked the kite on board. Tim was so impressed with his skill that he decided to go to another bay, where all the participants of the day were playing, to start dragging the body in the water. Since we were studying together, Natasha decided that I was ready too, so we moved on and got into the water much earlier than expected.

Body drag is when you float in the water, lie on your side and let the kite drag you through the surf. It's the perfect way to get yourself back on your board if you fall and lose it in the water, so it's a very important skill to master.

You never swim to your board when kiteboarding. You simply move back and forth, using your hand as a rudder and keeping your body straight. It's amazing how much you can control and how easy it is.

Human Bait

Dave and I grabbed the backs of Tim and Natasha's life jackets as they pulled us into deeper water. I had to laugh a little. Here I was lying in the water with my arm pointing straight ahead, acting as a rudder, as I was dragged by a kite and another person across the Pacific Ocean.

As Tim described, dragging a body is like baiting a person. It is better not to think about it, there is a mighty big fish in the ocean.

Why weren't we scared? Because kiteboarding is fun!

I didn't even think I'd be in the water today, and here I was already holding on to the board, raising and lowering the giant kite I was tied to. I had so much fun, I forgot to think about how worried I was just a few hours ago.

Natasha and Tim from the Maui kiteboarding school are true professionals who made us feel comfortable and confident in the water. There really is nothing to be afraid of. If you feel like you are losing control, all you have to do is let go of the bar and the kite will fall into the water.

It is also very easy to lift back. You just have to spin the lines by flipping the rudder and then the kite will catch the wind and get back into shape.

Once it catches the wind, you just need to lightly touch your wrist to start pulling it up. By holding the kite at 2 o'clock or 10 o'clock, you are simply riding into the wind and enjoying the ride.

Once we felt we had good kite control, both Tim and Natasha let us put the board up and feel what it's like to be on a kite with your feet tied to the board.

We didn't have enough time to get up and ride because you need three full days before you have enough skill to handle it on your own, but there was enough taste today to help us decide what we found our next sport.

Both of us came out of kiteboarding high. Our adrenaline was pumping and we came out of the water with big smiles on our faces. We can't wait to go back to Spain or Southeast Asia this year and get serious about kiteboarding. We will definitely take part in a week-long course somewhere during our travels around the world.
