It’s all about the shoes, baby.

Whether it’s to make us look taller, run faster, or just feel more confident, shoes play a big role in our lives.

As any basketball fan knows, shoes make a huge difference in your game. With the right pair of sneakers, you can jump higher and run faster. Some shoes can even make us taller!

But how much height do basketball shoes add?

It turns out that basketball shoes add between one and two inches to your height. Typically, the heel of the midsole will add more height than the forefoot.

That may not seem like much, but it can make all the difference in the world on the court.

Let’s understand why!

Why Is Height Important For Basketball Players?

Height is one of the most important traits a player can have when it comes to basketball. A height advantage allows you to shoot over defenders, grab rebounds, and block shots. So if you get the opportunity to add height with your shoes, you should take it.

A University Of Utah study discovered that height is correlated with winning position and rebounding rates (particularly in NBA playoffs).

Height specifically helps basketball players because it gives them an advantage when shooting the ball. When they can shoot over defenders, it makes it more difficult for the other team to block the shot.

In addition, tall players are more likely to grab rebounds and block shots since their height gives them a more extended reach than shorter opponents.

The tallest player in NBA history is Manute Bol, who was 7 feet 7 inches tall. He had a significant advantage over his opponents because of his height. He was able to shoot over defenders and block shots with ease.

Other tall NBA players who have had success in the league are Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard. Shaquille O’Neal, who is 7 feet 1 inch tall, was one of the most dominant players in the NBA. He was able to score at will and rebound with ease.

However, there are a few very successful players that are short as compared to others. Allen Iverson is one of them.

Do Basketball Shoes Make You Look Taller?

Yes, basketball shoes make you look taller because basketball shoes have a thicker sole than regular shoes. But, generally speaking, basketball shoes can give you a bit of an advantage when you’re playing against someone who’s wearing typical shoes.

Take the Nike LeBron James Soldier X, for example. These basketball shoes have a thick sole that can add up to 1.5 inches of height. And if you’re looking for even more height, there are elevator shoes with soles that are even thicker.

So, if you’re looking to add a little bit of height to your appearance, wearing a pair of basketball shoes is a great way to do it. Not only will you look taller, but you’ll also be able to play better basketball.

What Are Basketball Shoes Soles Made From?

The soles of basketball shoes are made from durable rubber that provides good traction on the court. The rubber is also flexible, which allows the shoes to move with the player’s foot.

In addition to adding height, a quality sole is essential for players as they run, jump, and pivot. The rubber also protects the shoe’s longevity by protecting against wear and tear. This is useful when you use your basketball shoes for badminton, for example, or playing any other rigorous sport.

The Outsole

The outsole is the part of the sole that makes contact with the ground. Since it’s made of thick and rugged rubber or a synthetic material such as polyurethane, the outsole is what provides durability and traction.

Usually, the soles are covered with special treads such as herringbone, which provide traction for the player.

The Midsole

The midsole sits between the outsole and the insole. It is typically a foam made of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) or polyurethane (PU). The midsole provides cushioning for the player’s foot and helps absorb shock.

That makes a massive difference if a player suffers from shin splints or has knee issues. Other shoe models such as Converse, for example, don’t offer such advanced cushioning.

The Insole

The insole is the part of the shoe that comes into direct contact with the player’s foot. The insole is usually made of foam or a synthetic material. The insole provides comfort for the player, and it also helps to keep the shoe in place on the player’s foot.

Having a quality insole is especially important if the player has pain in the Achilles tendons.

What Are The Pros Vs. Cons Of Basketball Shoes That Make You Taller?

So, what are the pros and cons of basketball shoes that make you taller? Some people might like the idea of shoes adding to your height, while others might find that it makes them feel awkward and unbalanced.

More Impact Protection, Comfort, & Bounce

On the pro side, taller shoes can offer more bounce and impact protection. In addition, since taller shoes offer a thicker midsole, they can help to cushion your feet and reduce the impact of jumps and landings.

This is important for athletes, who need all the protection they can get in order to stay healthy and perform at their best.

The most common injuries from high-impact landings are ankle sprains, knee sprains, and Achilles tendonitis. These injuries can sideline players for weeks or even months, so it’s essential to take measures to prevent them.

Wearing shoes with a thicker midsole can help to cushion the feet and reduce the impact of these landings.

When you’re wearing shoes with a thicker midsole, it feels like you’re walking on air. The extra bounce and cushioning make it feel like you’re floating on top of the ground, which can be really comfortable and reassuring.

More Cushion Means Less Court Feel And Responsiveness

When you’re playing ball, you need to feel the court. That’s why I’m not too fond of thick midsole basketball shoes. Since they minimize your court feel and responsiveness, you can’t move as quickly in them.

They also don’t have excellent energy return – an essential need for explosive basketball players. You want that energy to propel you forward when you make a move.

With thick midsole shoes, that’s not always the case. The cushion disperses the force you exert into the ground rather than returning it to you.

I always go with a thinner midsole because it gives me the best court feel and responsiveness. As a result, I can move around more efficiently and make more precise moves.

Plus, the energy return is stronger, which helps me jump higher and move faster. Try them out for yourself and see what you think.

Lack Of Stability & Balance

On the con side, taller shoes can make you feel unbalanced. They can also be more difficult to walk in and harder to move around in.

On the other hand, if you’re not used to wearing taller shoes, they can take some getting used to.

Overall, I think that the pros outweigh the cons regarding shoes that make you taller. They offer more bounce and protection, making me feel more confident on the court.

Does The NBA Measure Height With Shoes?

Some people might wonder how the NBA measures the height of players for the NBA combine. Do they measure with or without shoes? Before 2019 the NBA measured with shoes on – they called this “shoe height.”

After 2020, the NBA measured without shoes – this is called “barefoot height.” The NBA made this change because they wanted to measure the players’ heights more accurately.

What Are Shoe Lifts?

Shoe lifts are a type of shoe insert that increases a person’s height. They are not meant for basketball and can be dangerous if used while playing sports.

Shoe lifts can cause ankle and knee injuries because they change how a person’s foot and ankle moves. This can cause the player to over-extend their ankle or knee and get injured.

While they’re not safe for sports, shoe lifts are an excellent way for people who want to add a little bit of height to their appearance. They come in different heights, so you can choose the right lift for you.

There are also different lifts, such as heel lifts and insert lifts. Heel lifts are the most common type of lift, and they are inserted into the heel of your shoe. Insert lifts are a bit smaller than heel lifts, and they are inserted into the insole of your shoe.

On the other hand, if you’re not used to wearing taller shoes, they can take some getting used to.

What Are Jump Training Shoes?

Jump training shoes are shoes that help you jump higher. They are often heavier than other shoes to increase your vertical leap. Some jump training shoes such as Jumpsoles completely isolate your calf muscles and force you to use them to jump.

Isolating the calf muscles forces them to work harder, making them stronger and better able to generate power.

Image via basketballworkouttips.com

One European study analyzed a group of participants using jump training shoes over an 8-week period. The results of this study show that jump training with raised forefoot platforms is an effective way for athletes to increase their agility and performance.

So do you need jump training shoes?

No, you don’t need jump training shoes to jump higher. However, they can help you achieve your jumping goals faster. So if you’re looking to increase your vertical leap, then jump training shoes can be a great investment.

Do Basketball Shoes Make You Jump Higher?

Yes, basketball shoes help you jump higher. This is because they provide you with more stability and traction, allowing you to jump off the ground with more power.

So, while the shoes themselves may not make you jump higher, they provide a platform that will enable you to reach your maximum jumping potential. And, in the world of basketball, that can be the difference between making and missing a shot.

How Much Height Do Basketball Shoes Add? (A Comparison)

While some shoes may add a mere half-inch or so to your height, others can give you a few extra inches. It depends on the type of shoe, the construction, and how it fits.

Generally speaking, basketball or athletics shoes will give you the most height. These shoes contain thicker soles and more cushioning, which can add a couple of inches to your height. For example, such are some Nike Jordan models for wide feet.

Conversely, style or fashion shoes will typically have thinner soles and less cushioning so that they won’t add as much height.

How Much Height Does Nike Lebron 17 Add?

Top 12 Tallest Basketball Shoes (Ranked By Height)

Contrary to popular belief, not all basketball shoes are made equal. Some are simply taller than others. Below is the list of the basketball shoes that make you taller, ranked by height.

Air Jordan 36

The Air Jordan 36 adds about 0.55 inches (1.4 cm) of height brand new out of the box.

The Air Jordan 36 is a curious case. At first glance, you would think that the shoe would definitely be one of the tallest basketball shoes around. But, it only adds 0.55 inches of height.

In terms of traction, the Air Jordan 36 is phenomenal. It performs well on both clean and dusty courts. The surprisingly strong upper and the outsole materials of the Air Jordan 36 wrapping upward towards the midsole make the support in this shoe solid for a basketball game.

Worn by NBA superstars including Luka Dončić, Jayson Tatum, Blake Griffin, and Carmelo Anthony, the Air Jordan 36 is a great basketball shoe to add to your collection.

Most basketball fans agree that the cushioning on the Air Jordan 36 is amazing, but they also agree that the Air unit protruding from the outsole is unnecessary. It gives the illusion that the shoe adds a lot of height when in fact, it adds a little over half inches only.

Nike KD 11

The Nike KD 11 adds about 1.03 inches (2.6 cm) of height brand new out of the box.

The eleventh signature shoe of Kevin Durant is one of the nicest looking and sleekest basketball shoes that make you taller. However, not everyone is a big fan of the Nike KD 11.

The combination of React and Zoom Air cushioning adds about 1.03 inches of height and gets plenty of good grades across the board, but that’s where the positive aspects stop.

Many shoe reviewers agree that the Flyknit upper is comfortable and looks good, but it is way too “stretchy” and loose for a performance basketball shoe. Be prepared to slide a lot in the Nike KD 11 if you are a basketball player who does a lot of crossovers and side-to-side movements.

Traction is also another area of complaint. It performs well on clean courts but not so well on dusty courts. In our opinion, the Nike KD 11 is best worn for casual use or friendly pickup games.

Adidas Dame 5

The Adidas Dame 5 adds about 1.06 inches (2.7 cm) of height brand new out of the box.

Dame is the signature basketball shoe line of NBA superstar, Damian Lillard. He is known for his clutch performances, especially in the playoffs. His 5th shoe was released in February 2019.

Nike LeBron Soldier VI

The Nike LeBron Soldier VI adds about 1.18 inches (3 cm) of height brand new out of the box.

The LeBron Soldier shoe line has been quite successful and most of them offer you more bang for your buck on the basketball court when compared to the LeBron signature shoe line.

Combining great traction and cushioning, the LeBron Soldier VI may be the best Soldier model ever. While the sole height is 1 inch and the heel height is 1.18 inches, the entire Zoom Air adds about 1.18 inches of height and provides low-profile responsiveness.

Additionally, the LeBron Soldier VI is one of the best basketball shoes with enough airflow. While it’s not talked about often, the shoes were pretty much on point as far as ventilation is concerned.

If you are a versatile small forward like LeBron James, you may want to pick up a pair to take your game to the next level. The shoe is responsive and well-ventilated, helping you enjoy your game.

Nike LeBron 17

The Nike LeBron 17 adds about 1.19 inches (3 cm) of height brand new out of the box.

The Nike LeBron is all about impact protection. Boasting a thick 1.19 inches of sole height, the cushioning is loved by a lot of people. A huge Max Air unit in the heel is combined with Zoom in the forefoot and they both provide a ton of impact protection and bounce.

While the new Knitposite upper material is thick, soft, and comfortable, it does get pretty hot after an hour or two on the basketball court. Overall, the LeBron 17 is a great basketball shoe.

Air Jordan Future

The Air Jordan Future adds about 1. 2 inches (3 cm) of height brand new out of the box.

Browse colors on Amazon

Looking at the design of the shoe, the word “avant-garde” comes to mind. The mid-top Air Jordan Future feels light on the feet, and it barely feels like wearing anything.

Plenty of reviewers said that the Air Jordan Future is supremely comfortable footwear with plenty of cushioning. It adds a substantial amount of height, 1.2 inches to be exact. In fact, the Nike Air Jordan Future is also included in the tallest Nike shoe list.

Overall, the Jordan Future is a very simple shoe but very stylish and versatile.

The silhouette of the Jordan Future can be dressed up and down along with shorts, jeans, and joggers. You can also wear it with or without socks for a relaxed look during summertime.

Nike LeBron 10

The Nike LeBron 10 adds about 1.22 inches (3.1 cm) of height brand new out of the box.

The signature LeBron shoe makes another appearance in the “best basketball shoes that make you taller” list. This time, it is the Nike LeBron 10. It adds about 1.22 inches of height.

In terms of cushioning, the LeBron 10 is incredible. The heel feels just like a regular Nike Air Max 360 unit but once you begin to run and jump you will see where the Zoom Air and Air Max combo starts to fit into place. It’s almost propelling in the forefoot and is just amazing.

Durability is not an issue with the Nike LeBron 10 because the upper is thick yet flexible. The shoe will last a long time and will endure the hard grind of the basketball court.

Nike LeBron 16

The Nike LeBron 16 adds about 1.22 inches (3.1 cm) of height brand new out of the box.

Yet another signature LeBron shoe that made the list, the Nike LeBron 16 is one of the tallest basketball shoes on the market. It adds about 1.22 inches of height to the wearer.

While the traction is pretty reliable on clean courts, it’s not as good on dusty courts. The cushioning, however, is the best part of the Nike LeBron 16. Almost all shoe reviewers declare the same thing: the cushioning feels super nice. It provides a well-balanced ride.

In terms of containment, Battleknit 2.0 is impressive. It is definitely an upgrade over its predecessor and it’s how a Flyknit should be – soft, flexible, strong, and supportive.

For basketball, the Nike LeBron 16 is an outstanding performance hoops shoe that is especially recommended for supremely explosive and powerful wing players, just like LeBron James.

Nike LeBron 15

The Nike LeBron 15 adds about 1.27 inches (3.22 cm) of height brand new out of the box.

The Nike LeBron 15 is a favorite among basketball fans. In fact, famous shoe reviewers almost unanimously call the Nike LeBron 15 the best LeBron signature shoe yet.

The biggest highlight of the Nike LeBron 15 is definitely the cushioning. Not only is it tall, but the bounce and feedback feel from the Zoom units are incredible. It’s close to cushioning perfection.

Combining Air Max and Zoom provides an insanely comfortable cushioning that adds up to 1. 27 inches of height. It works extremely well for big guys that need a lot of impact protection.

The new premium Battleknit upper is very comfortable and provides excellent containment. One drawback to the shoe, however, the midsole and outsole lack a wide enough base that can really hurt the lateral stability and overall support of a basketball player.

Nike Air More Uptempo ‘96

The Nike Air More Uptempo adds about 1.7 inches (4.3 cm) of height brand new out of the box.

Browse colors on Amazon

The Air More Uptempo is one of the most iconic Nike Basketball shoes ever, made famous by Scottie Pippen and George of the Jungle. Originally introduced in 1996, it is back for a 2020 retro.

Many basketball fans love the Nike Air More Uptempo because it is stylish enough for everyday use, yet durable enough for playing basketball on the hardwood or on the streets.

In fact, the shoe provides some of the best ankle support.

Boasting a sole height of 1 inch and heel height of 1. 77 inches, the Nike Air More Uptempo can add about 1.7 inches of height. You can wear it every day to help you look taller because the material used in the upper does not crease easily even during aggressive movements.

Thanks to the Herringbone tread pattern, there is a considerable number of reviewers who say that the Nike Air More Uptempo grips the court well, providing support to their swift movements.

So, whether you want to rock a pair for basketball or casual wear, you know that the Nike Air More Uptempo will not only make you taller but will also help you play better.

Nike Foamposite

The Nike Foamposite adds about 1.8 inches (4.57 cm) of height brand new out of the box.

Check price on Amazon

While it may not seem like it, the Nike Foamposite adds a substantial amount of height. It is very noticeable because the moment you put both feet inside the shoes, you will instantly feel taller.

The Nike Foamposite can add up to 1. 8 inches of height brand new out of the box. This is due to the full-length Zoom with a double stack in the heel.

The foam’s sturdiness and protective traits are amazing. However, you can’t enjoy them for a while until they are broken in. Once the shoe begins to soften up, you can appreciate how comfortable a pair of Nike Foamposite can be. It just takes a lot longer than you would imagine.

After several years, the Nike Foamposite will not add as much height compared to when it was brand new. However, it is one of the longest-lasting basketball sneakers around. In fact, the shoe materials will probably outlive the glue holding everything together.

Air Jordan 11

The Air Jordan 11 adds about 2.4 inches (6 cm) of height brand new out of the box.

Browse colors on Amazon

The tallest basketball shoes is the Nike Air Jordan 11. Boasting a sole height of 2 inches and a heel height of 2.4 inches, the Nike Air Jordan 11 can give you more than 2 inches of height.

It’s rare to find a pair of basketball shoes that add more than 2 inches of height, and the Air Jordan 11 is one of them. While the heel height is 2.4 inches high, it does depress slightly once you step on them. At most, the Air Jordan 11 will give you 2 inches of height. That’s a lot!

Not only is the Air Jordan 11 cool to wear off the court, but it is also a straight beast on the court as well. The shoes look good, feel good, and they allow you to play your best basketball.

How to choose basketball shoes | Useful tips and nuances

We love basketball because this sport is quite fast and dynamic. At some moments we make sharp jerks, high jumps, unexpected stops and, of course, this is what helps us to dominate the game and love it for unique moments.

When playing basketball, there is always a high risk of getting various kinds of injuries that overshadow our pleasure and send us to the infirmary for recovery, which can last from a few days to a year. But no matter what happens, we still love this game and try to protect ourselves as much as possible when necessary, in order to feel comfortable and convenient with every step.

But why should any basketball player think about safety as much as about a clean and beautiful hit in the basket, leaving behind a pleasant sound of rustling net? A simple example: the more powerful a car's engine is, the more manufacturers focus on various systems that help make driving safer and more enjoyable. The same goes for basketball, the more jumps and jerks we make, the more we need to pay attention to safety in this game.

Of course safety and comfort in basketball is achieved by many factors. For example, this is a complete and balanced diet that saturates our body with numerous useful microelements and vitamins. Also, safety in the game is achieved by performing various exercises to strengthen the ligaments and joints during training periods outside the game. An equally important factor is a good warm-up before the game itself and the cleanliness of the surface on which we will perform various movements. And all these are important components that will directly or indirectly help us avoid various injuries in the future.

Quality basketball shoes are essential for a successful, comfortable and safe game. Of course, it is important to mention that any footwear is not able to protect us from injury by 100%. Even if we follow all the recommendations described above.

But does this mean that you can play basketball in any sneakers? No. And here are a few reasons. Some models are simply not designed to perform the actions that a basketball game involves. Other sneakers may have mediocre quality or short-lived materials that can lead to unfortunate consequences.

And here comes the question. How to choose basketball shoes that would help you get maximum pleasure and enjoyment from the game? Based on the ratings and reviews of both amateur and professional athletes, BasketZilla has collected the necessary information to help anyone make a choice and understand what factors to look for when buying basketball shoes.

Original, branded shoes or any other will do?

We recommend starting your choice with this question. We immediately want to mention the importance of buying only original basketball shoes from reputable manufacturers. Why exactly? Signature sneakers from brands like Nike, Adidas, Jordan Brand, Under armour, Reebok, ANTA, PUMA, Converse, Peak and a few more provide quality shoes with durable materials and proven technologies that have passed quality control and numerous tests. The production of branded sneakers is based on the feedback of professional athletes and their subsequent use during the game itself. Accordingly, branded basketball shoes will allow us to feel more comfortable and confident on the court.

Here it is important to emphasize the danger of counterfeiting branded shoes. Now, when buying on the Internet or in shopping centers, you can stumble upon such fake basketball shoes that are difficult to distinguish at first glance, even for some specialists. There are a number of factors on how to distinguish a fake from the original. Here is some of them.

  • verified online stores or branded departments that represent the brand
  • sizes. Pay attention to the availability of half sizes and plus sizes. On sites selling fakes, often only running sizes for men and women.
  • prices should not differ much or even several times from the average market value among official sellers.

By the way, our service, BasketZilla, offers to buy only original basketball shoes from well-known manufacturers in trusted and reliable online stores that have proven themselves exclusively on the positive side! Everyone has the opportunity to compare prices among these suppliers, see photos, read reviews, learn about discounts and available sizes. Our service makes it much easier to find a better option. Available options can be found at the end of the article.

But does this mean that it is dangerous and better not to buy non-branded basketball shoes? Not always. In any case, when choosing sneakers, it is worth considering several factors:

  • how high-quality materials are used in them. For example, how are the seams made, are they taped in areas of increased wear? What is the upper material, does it have good wear resistance? How is the lacing system done? Is the sole durable and what is the cushioning system?
  • how comfortable the shoes are. For example, is your leg comfortable when you stand, when you walk, when you jump? How tight is the foot and is there any excessive discomfort?

So, regardless of the financial component and their priorities, everyone has something to think about. Some are guided by the phrase "the miser pays twice", others do not want to "overpay for the brand." Be that as it may, pay attention to the performance of the specific basketball model that you want to purchase. Determine for yourself at what level you will play - amateur or professional, because the more serious the approach to the game, the more serious investments should be.

Shoe Heights and their Impact on Playing Style

There are three types of basketball shoe heights - High, Mid and Low. It used to be that taller players fighting under the basket should wear taller shoes, and accordingly the shorter the player, the lower the profile height of their model should be for speed and agility. Now, this stereotype has begun to become more and more blurred, as the concept of the position of a player in basketball has changed a lot. This is especially felt in the NBA, where the real breakthrough was made by Kevin Durant with the Nike KD line of sneakers and Giannis Adetoumbo with his Freaks, forever washing away the notion of classic position distribution according to player height.

Now, when everyone wants to be LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo or Kevin Durant, profile height should be chosen based on your playing style. For example, if you want to play at high speeds, using dribbling and first step speed, feel free to choose a low profile and in some cases a medium one when it has an elastic zone in the ankle area. If you want to score from above or fight under the basket, look for higher models that will help protect your joints with excellent cushioning and a padded collar. That is, although height and weight sometimes affect the style of play and these factors also need to be considered when choosing the height of a sneaker, nevertheless, not everyone wants to play in a certain position, and not everyone plays at a professional level.

Therefore, the average height of the profile in modern basketball shoes is more versatile, which can be used by both center and heavy forwards, as well as small forwards, defensemen and even point guards. Don't focus too much on your height and weight, as your main factor should be comfort and convenience with the standard basketball moves that you tend to do the most. It's also worth considering that if you're using an ankle brace, then you should choose shoes that allow you to secure it tightly.

If you play at a professional or semi-professional level, then you should approach the choice of profile height more carefully, perhaps after consulting with your coach, who will tell you what position he is going to use you in the future. If you are clearly assigned to a certain position, then think about what role is assigned to you in the team, what exactly is expected of you? What do you tend to do during the game itself - go under the basket, fight for rebounds, or organize fast attacks?

There is also an opinion that the height of the profile greatly affects the protection and safety of the ankle. But think about this. For example, if the ligaments in the ankle area are naturally weak, prone to twisting, or even just already stretched over years of repeated injuries, then the height of the profile will not be able to save 100% from getting a relapse. For example, a high profile will protect the ankle, but when tucked, it will create a load on the ligaments and tendons of the knee joint. A low profile, on the other hand, has a high risk of re-injury, but allows you to wear a brace and does not burden the knee. The Mid profile has something in between and is therefore more versatile, although we emphasize that no profile can completely protect your ankle.

The height of the profile also allows you to achieve a different fit with the lacing system. Sometimes a lot depends on the leg lift, which determines the positive or negative feedback about a particular model.

So, the height of the profile should help when playing basketball, and not interfere or cause discomfort. The surest way to choose a profile height is to play with each of these types and try to experience their advantages and disadvantages for yourself.

About the surface on which we plan to play

Before buying basketball shoes, it is worth considering whether we buy them for indoor or outdoor play. In the halls, as a rule, there is often parquet and, in rare cases, a rubberized coating. In outdoor areas, the coating is usually more rigid for durability in open spaces. Therefore, depending on the surface, we should choose our running shoes.

For example, for a gym, we'd better take a softer sole, which will help to achieve maximum grip on the surface, of course, provided that the parquet is carefully cleaned and there is no dust, dirt or even unpainted spots on it. The tread pattern is also responsible for grip, and many note the high efficiency of the so-called “Christmas tree”, but it should not be made a priority when choosing, since other patterns have no less positive reviews.

For the outdoors, we should opt for a shoe with a firmer outsole to avoid wear and tear on tarmac or any other rough surface. It must be remembered that any sneakers on outdoor playgrounds wear out faster, which means that they should be more carefully cared for.

Many people point out the advantages of having models that flex better towards the toe and are fairly firm or less flexible in the midsection. This will make jumping much easier on any of the surfaces.

Another important factor is the cushioning system. Each brand and model is different. And of course, some shoes are designed specifically for speed, others for overhead shots. But depreciation should be, otherwise soon you can get problems not only with the knee, but also with the spine. Many basketball players who played on different grounds note that playing on asphalt is more traumatic and uncomfortable for jumping than on other surfaces. Therefore, if you plan to play at full strength on asphalt, then consider when choosing good cushioning and reliable traction with a wide sole that will increase stability and stability during the game.

Now there are balanced basketball shoes that can be used both indoors and outdoors. We emphasize that a lot depends on your style of play, further operation and care of the model.

Therefore, determine for yourself the surface on which you will play. It may be worth taking a few sneakers so that one can be used in the gym, the other on the street. This is the most correct approach if you play often and at the limit of your capabilities.

About the upper materials

Today's basketball shoes are made from different materials than they used to be. For a long time it was believed that only natural leather is able to meet all the requirements of basketball shoes. However, despite the high strength, such models are quite heavy for a modern fast game. And so now most brands use a combination of genuine leather, synthetic leather, textiles, mesh materials, plastics and other components that can create the perfect option for any basketball player.

Everyone has their own priorities when choosing the material of the upper. For some, the basis is durability and strength, for others, lightness and ventilation are the most important factors. Modern basketball shoes have a balanced composition of materials that meets even the most demanding requirements.

Look at your old running shoes and identify their weaknesses and worn spots. For some, this will be the area in the forefoot in the area of the big toe, and not only the materials of the upper, but also the sole. Someone has a lot of wear on the rear end and the depreciation system. For others, the lacing system and uncomfortable tongue are uncomfortable. Whatever it is, take this moment to yourself so that when buying new sneakers, think about how they will cope with our problem areas.

So upper materials often emphasize certain points - lightness, ventilation, comfort, flexibility, and so on. Think about what is more important for you and choose ahead.

What to look for when trying on

Ideally, each model would be well measured. But what if you are shopping online? It’s good if you know your size for each brand and purchase it on subsequent purchases, because each manufacturer has its own size grid. But what if we buy sneakers for the first time and through an online store?

The most important thing is to determine the size of the foot in terms of length and width. It is important to focus on the size grid of the manufacturer! It is necessary to take measurements of the foot on a flat surface while standing and preferably in the second half for when we walked enough. Stand on a white sheet of paper and circle the foot at a vertical angle with a pencil or pen. Measure the length from the thumb to the heel. This is a classic version with the definition of the length of the foot. There are rare cases when different models sit differently in the same company. It depends on the structural features of the shoe and the technologies that were used to create it. Also, to determine the size, you can go to the nearest department with the sale of sneakers of a particular company. But this option is only possible if original sneakers are sold there, and not a fake, in which the dimensional grid has a difference. In extreme cases, you can try on your friend's shoes, who have a similar or close size.

If the purchase is made directly in the store, then it is best to do it in sports socks and after we have walked enough, because our legs have already received some tension and, accordingly, are slightly swollen. This is quite normal, because during the game our feet also tend to swell. If the purchase is made in the morning or when the legs did not have enough tension, then it is better to take a model half a size larger to avoid discomfort during the game. If you need a tight fit, it is better to take the size in size.

Be sure to try on both feet as the length of the foot may vary and one of the feet may feel uncomfortable later on.

Pay attention to the removable insole, which can be washed or even replaced in case of need.

The next step is to lace up the shoes tightly, because one of the most important things about basketball shoes is the ability to lock the foot in tight thanks to the lacing system. Now, in addition to the laces, there are various straps, latches and sometimes zippers. Tight fixation of the foot is the key to good stability and stability. Some NBA players, for example, periodically lace up their shoes at halftime during a game for optimal performance.

Of course, it is worth noting that some people do not like the tight fixation of the sneaker, which is why you can notice models flying off the players' feet from time to time. The best thing is to find a middle ground. You do not need to pinch the foot too much, because there is a risk of poor blood circulation in that area of the body. But you should not allow the foot to “walk” in the sneaker, because there is a danger of slipping, which can lead to injury.

Next, get up and walk around, if possible, make jumps and sudden stops, as during the game (Warn the seller in advance to avoid misunderstandings). Take your time in this moment, let your feet feel the shoes, get used to it.

If at this moment you notice a sharp discomfort, then either change the size or the model itself. If this discomfort is not significant, then this may indicate that the model needs to be smashed. Remember that if the shoes fit you in size, then subsequent rubbing and calluses are a feature of your foot or the operation of a particular model. If they do not go away, you can use various spacers, stretching sprays, special insoles, or use folk tricks to get the desired result.

If there are any features, such as a wide foot or anatomical deviations, then take care of a consultation with a specialist, orthopedic insoles, ointments, exercises, and so on.

So, trying on shoes should be mandatory. However, if the purchase is made through an online store, carefully take measurements and, if necessary, consult with a manager or consultant.

Conclusions and highlights

So, let's summarize and look at the points that you need to consider when buying.

  • Buy branded, branded and original shoes from trusted online stores or points of sale. Remember, the better your feet are taken care of, the more they will be grateful to us throughout their lives. If you find budget, non-branded sneakers, determine if they will meet the basic requirements of basketball models.
  • Define your playing style and choose a profile height that will help you perform your usual game movements with ease and comfort.
  • Think about what kind of surface you take your shoes for. The hall is a soft sole, the street is more solid. You can buy universal ones, but do not be lazy to take care of the shoes so that they last a long time.
  • Consider what is most important to you in a basketball shoe? Lightweight, breathable, durable, flexible and choose your upper design accordingly. Think about the wear spots on old sneakers and focus on strengthening them in the model you're going to buy.
  • Do not rush to buy right away. Try on carefully. If you buy through the online store, take measurements and consult with the sales manager. Do not be afraid to make a mistake, since most models are made to fit standard foot sizes.

Therefore, listen, but in any case do not rely on the opinions of others about this or that model, because not only the shape of the foot is different for everyone, but also the style of play.

Please note that finding the perfect shoe can take some time and effort. For some NBA players, brands capture every feature of the foot, and even then there are misses and mishaps. So do not lose hope, you will succeed!

How to choose basketball shoes

Hello, dear site visitors basketball-training. org.ua ! Basketball shoes are one of the most important pieces of equipment for a basketball player. Basketball is a fast-paced game where players constantly have to deal with sudden jerks and stops, jumps and turns, and quick changes of direction.

That is why basketball shoes must meet a number of serious requirements: sneakers must be stable, have good grip on the ground, support and partially fix the ankle, and provide good foot cushioning. And this is not to mention the fact that sneakers should be worn well and look decent. The tips in this article will help you make the right choice when buying basketball shoes.

How to choose the right basketball shoes

Often, when choosing shoes, we don't even think about how they will fit our style of play. But this is very important! So, a small classification of sneakers and positions to which they correspond:

High sneakers (high). These shoes are most often chosen by tall and heavy players. After all, they are very important indicators of depreciation and stability. Thick outsole and reinforced ankle support (Article injury and treatment of the ankle joint ) - these are the main characteristics of these sneakers.

Universal (mid) sneakers. These shoes are ideal for sharpshooters, small forwards and part of the shooting guards. The fixation of the ankle joint is, of course, lower than in high-top sneakers, and the sole is a little firmer. But universal basketball shoes are much lighter than high ones, which means you will be faster and more mobile.

Low shoes. If you play number one or number two and like to move fast, this is your choice. There is practically no ankle support, because the weight of a basketball player playing in this position is much less than that of a center or heavy forward. In return, you will get low weight, the ability to quickly change direction, and adaptation to quick stops and jerks.

In fact, I was skeptical about low-top sneakers, citing low ankle support. However, as practice has shown, even a very good high-top sneaker will not help much with an unsuccessful landing. I'm thinking of getting something low and light. If you have experience of playing in low sneakers (positive or negative) - share it in the comments, I will be very grateful.

Basketball shoes: material, ankle support and sole

So let's start with material selection for basketball shoes. If you still think that all-leather sneakers are the best option, I will disappoint you. Light combinations of leather and synthetic base mesh are much better! The leather will provide durability, while the synthetic material will provide sufficient flexibility, strength and ventilation. Another point: Recent material trends in basketball uppers are showing the popularity of synthetic materials. These sneakers are cheaper and not inferior in wear resistance.

Ankle fixation in sneakers is achieved with laces, fixing strap, zipper or Velcro. Sometimes there are combinations of laces and Velcro. It seems to me that there is nothing better than the good old shoelaces. The main thing is that the laces themselves are of high quality, do not stretch or untie during the game. Oh yes, Velcro can close the lacing itself and prevent them from coming loose, dangling, etc.

Shoe sole. To begin with, decide right away: where you will play. The soft sole is not suitable for playing on asphalt courts; and too hard will bring discomfort when playing on the parquet. So it's better to buy different models for the hall and the street. A bit of physics: the larger the sole area, the better the grip on the ground. And the herringbone pattern will give additional points during turns and stops. Remember that the foot should not be pinched in the shoe. But it shouldn't wobble or slide either.

Choosing sneakers: a couple more tips

Determine your foot size both in centimeters and using the size chart. It often happens that the size 43 declared by the manufacturer actually turns out to be 42, and then, with a stretch. This is where the biggest disadvantage of online shopping appears: the sneakers that come to your home do not fit at all.

Trainers are best bought in the afternoon, after walking. Foot size increases in the evening, so either come after 3-4 pm or give your feet a good workout and after that welcome to the store (don't forget to wash your feet).

Don't buy the most expensive and cheapest sneakers. Sneakers for a couple of tens of dollars can't be good (although there are exceptions, once in Second Hand I bought awesome AND 1 sneakers, which served me for 2 years. And this is on asphalt!). And sneakers bought for $400-500 “from Michael Jordan himself” will not be much better than a good, but not named analogue for $200.

Well, such a banal thing: distinguish between women's and men's basketball shoes . The female foot is much sleeker, and girls may not be very comfortable in men's sneakers.
