Rim Height Measurements
What is regulation height in basketball?
Measuring for the correct regulation basketball goal height is straightforward: the top of the rim should be set 10' above the playing surface.
The 10' rim height measurement should not be confused with the top of the backboard or the bottom of the net. Whatever the size of the backboard, the rim is set at the same regulation height. Why Is the Regulation Height 10'?

Why Set the Rim Lower Than Regulation?

James Naismith was the inventor of the game of basketball in 1891 out in Springfield, Massachusetts. During that year, he hung peach baskets off the running track guard railings at the YMCA, ten feet off the ground, for players to shoot at. After every basket made by a player, the game would pause to get a ladder to retrieve the ball, which was a soccer ball, at that time.
Eventually, iron hoops and a net replaced the peach baskets, which removed a ladder to retrieve a ball during a game.

The size of the ball is also strictly regulated. For male and female teams these sizes are different:
- for basketball players : in diameter - 74.9-78 cm with a weight of 567 to 650 g;
- for female basketball players : 72.4-73.7 cm across, 510 to 567 g.

The first rules in basketball

It was then that the rings became only metal and with a grid, and the optimal height was determined.

- ceiling height not less than 7 meters;
- lower edge of the shield at a height of 290 cm from the floor;
- shield dimensions 180 x 105 cm;

- ring diameter 45–45.7 cm;
- diameter steel bar for basketball hoop 16–20 mm;
- mesh 450 mm in diameter, with a mesh of 50 mm.
The ball must also have strictly defined dimensions. However, for men's and women's teams they are different. Balls for basketball players are 74.9-78 cm in diameter and weigh 567-650 g, for basketball players, respectively - 72.4-73.7 cm, 510-567 g.
