How to Box Out in Basketball with 4 Easy Tips
Basketball Tip
Presented by Joel Green, Camp Director
Nike Basketball Camp RiverWinds Community Center
One of the most important factors in basketball is the battle for rebounds after missed shots. Whether you are on offense or defense, gaining position and securing possession of the ball increases your team’s chances of winning. Many people think you need to be tall or jump high to be a good rebounder, but in fact, some of the best rebounders are the smaller players who can effectively position themselves prior to the rebound happening. We call this skill boxing out.
Boxing out is a skill that can help set you apart from the competition, but it does require practice just like any other part of your game. These tips for boxing out commonly taught at Nike Basketball Camps will be help you take your game to the next level!
1. Communicate after a shot
If you see a shot being taken, yelling “SHOT!” is one way to let your teammates know the ball is headed towards the basket. Communicating will help your teammates who did not see the shot get ready to rebound. When you hear “SHOT!” your ears should perk up and you should think “where can I box out?”.
2. Locate your man/woman and make contact
At the same time, a shot is put up, you need to find the player closest to you and make contact with them so that you know where they are, and so your eyes can track the ball to the basket. Everyone needs to know who they are responsible for guarding so that nobody from the other team can slip through untouched and grab an easy rebound.
3. Seal the player in an athletic position
You have made contact with the opponent and are watching the ball. Now, you must seal them off with your body so that you are in between them and the basket. You want to be in an athletic stance which means your feet are wide, knees are bent, and arms are extended out to the side. It is important to stay low while you seal so that the opponent is not able to push you to the side and get around. Maintain contact with your opponent so you know where they are. If you feel them trying to move around you, shuffle left or right to keep your position between them and the basket.
4. Back down away from the hoop
Once you have the opponent sealed, you can begin to push them away from the basket. This will create space in front of you where you can explode to the ball once it comes off the basket. Even if you do not secure the rebound, you have backed your opponent out of the play and created space for your other teammates to grab the rebound.
Boxing out is easier said than done. It can be difficult to prevent an opponent from getting around you without being able to see them, but you will get better at feeling them move if you practice these tips. Don’t let your size scare you from boxing out bigger players! Get in position and push around the bigger kids!

basketball: rebound
Many coaches will tell you that rebounding is the key to winning basketball. Rebounds mean more possession for your team, which means more shots. Offensive rebounds can lead to easy batting by defenders and a quick score.
Boxing
The most important selection concept is boxing. Even if your opponent is taller and can jump higher than you, if you block them properly, you can get the bounce. Boxing is getting between your opponent and the basket while the shot is in the air. You position and move to stay between the basket and your opponent. If they try to jump over you, they will often be charged with a back foul.
Defensive rebounding
All five players are responsible for rebounding. This is especially true for defense. When the ball goes up, each defender must isolate the attacker. It's somewhat easier in a one-man defense game where you block the player you're covering first. In zone defense you have to find the player and isolate him. When the shot goes up, you need to find someone to box. Also, don't forget to block the shooter. They can be a dangerous rebounder because they know where the ball is likely to go.
Offensive Rebound
Offensive Rebound can give your team another chance and can sometimes lead to light buckets. Offensive rebounders must quickly get around defensive players trying to isolate them. It's even better if you can get inside the position.
One of the most dangerous offensive rebounders is the shooter. Always watch your shot. You have the best idea of where the ball is going; if you missed long, short, right or left. Hopefully you make the throw, but if not, you might be here to catch the rebound.
What makes a great match?
You might think that because of your short stature, you won't be able to do a good job. It's not true, some of the best rebounders have never been the tallest players in the room. Charles Barkley, sometimes referred to as the Round Bouncer, was one of the best rebounders in the NBA at 6ft 6ft. He constantly played against seven-footers and overtook them.
- Anticipation - Anticipation is the ability to determine where the ball will go after it hits the basket. Will it bounce far, fall right under the target, go left, right? That's all the great rebounders learn to anticipate. You can't just stand there and hope the ball comes straight for you every time.
- Hard work and determination - Good rebounders go after the ball every time and don't give up until the ball is in their hands. In their minds, every time the punch goes up, the rebound is after them.
- Jump Ability - The strongest pickups can jump fast. Not just high, but fast as a pogo stick.
- Height - Of course, while height isn't the most important factor, it doesn't hurt either.
Outlet Pass
What will you do with it after the rebound? Great defenders learn to pass on the way out. This is a quick pass to a guard on the flank down the floor. A great exit pass can start a fast break and turn into an easy bucket for your team.

Alexey Prokopiev: Why don't we train stars? Set the coaches the right task!.
Barely ending his brilliant career and becoming president of the RFU, Andrei Kirilenko complained that the coaches of the Russian national team are forced to choose from a long-familiar circle of players, limited to 20-30 candidates. But where are the new Ponkrashovs, Khryapas and Mozgovs? Why aren't experienced players supported by talented youth, and why was the gold medal of the 2007 European Championship unthinkable without American point guard John Holden? “The roots of the problems are in youth basketball,” is the standard answer of specialists. To find out what kind of “roots” these are, “Sport Day after Day” went to the Vasileostrovskaya sports school - it has been since 19In the 80s it was famous for its comfortable conditions for classes and coaching staff. Here, Maxim Grigoriev, defender of the Russian national team, winner of the European Cup and winner of the 2013 Universiade, also learned basketball science. But his example is an exception. Usually, looking at the skills of young basketball players, the coaches of professional teams just shrug. The coach of the SDYUSSHOR Alexei Prokopiev has been in youth basketball for 12 years, coaching boys from 11 to 16 years old. After a conversation with a person who daily sees the situation from the inside, the reasons became clear to the point of banality. Now the word is up to those who are supposed to solve these problems.
Why children pass by basketball
— Sports are often left out among children's hobbies, — the coach began the conversation. - Computers, the Internet, iPhones, TV - children get so used to all this that it can be very difficult to get them interested in something else.
— What types of ports are the main competitors of basketball? ?
- Martial arts are very popular now - karate, taekwondo, kickboxing, judo. There is a boy in my group who has been combining basketball with judo for several years. On the one hand, it’s good when a child tries different things, but on the other hand, this is a problem. For better training, for the growth of sportsmanship and a more accurate assessment of the prospects, it is desirable that the child focuses specifically on basketball. But despite the fact that classes at our school are free and the conditions are among the best in the city, there is no large influx of children in basketball. It is much easier to lure children into the same football. Even in hockey.
Hockey remains a very attractive sport for parents. Basketball is now losing this competition.
— Why?
- This is often a parental choice. They think that being a hockey player is more prestigious. Perhaps the point is that they look at the earnings of professional players. I often go to schools, somehow I wanted to invite a boy to my classes, and my parents tell me: “He has been playing hockey with us since he was 5 years old. ” Moreover, it costs parents a lot of money. Already at an early school age in hockey there is a huge competition, it is enough to miss a couple of weeks to fall behind the group. I know cases when in order for a child to go to the next gathering, people had to sell some things. But even that doesn't guarantee anything. It happens that after the training session, the coach calls the parents and says: “You don’t need to go to hockey training anymore.” Nevertheless, hockey remains a very attractive sport for parents. Basketball is now losing this competition.
- So it's hard to just get a group?
Yes. You have to invite, interest, communicate with parents, and not choose the best from many applicants. I work only with boys - if parents generally have a positive attitude towards sports, then there are no big obstacles to attracting their children to classes. However, I know that many parents of girls are wary of basketball.
Why?
— They have a false stereotype about our sport. It is believed that playing basketball will make girls too tall. This is a big misconception. In addition to natural growth, you can add to it only if you specifically do stretching exercises. And only during the period of active growth of bones. Yes, and then 3-5 centimeters. If a child has high growth, a little lower or a little higher, he will be so.
— How do you determine if a child can succeed in basketball?
- I come to physical education classes - I watch the child against the background of the general mass. I look at his height data, how dexterous, jumpy, how quickly he perceives information from the teacher.
— But all children develop at different rates. No one knows what the child will be like against the background of peers even in a couple of years. What then is the point of selecting a seven-year-old child by height?
- I agree. I mostly look not at growth itself, but at its prospects. I determine by physique - if the child is thin, with long arms and legs, has a large leg size for his age, then there are prerequisites that he will be tall. But most importantly, I watch how the boy jumps, runs, whether he is coordinated, especially in movement. Another important point that is sometimes missed is how the child feels in the team. It happens that a boy has everything for basketball, but he takes the ball and fiddles with it himself, not paying attention to teammates. This is more like an individual sport.
Parents have to pay even for competitions
— Well, you've got a group. What is preventing the preparation of new Kirilenkos and Pashutins?
— The main reason is the lack of funding. We have the simplest equipment, and money for participation in tournaments, except for the Russian championship, is collected from parents.
— How much money is allocated by the City Sports Committee?
- For weekly classes at the sports school, participation in competitions and holding one, maximum two training camps per year. This is not enough for young basketball players to develop their abilities.
— Why is the collection so valuable?
— For example, we go to Estonia. There is an opportunity to fully concentrate on basketball - to train twice a day in the playing hall, plus a third lesson in the pool. In this mode, the guys add much faster. Secondly, there is no such price-quality ratio as in Estonia anywhere in the Leningrad Region. It has everything you need under one roof: a gym, a swimming pool, a sauna, a standard-sized game room for matches and practicing techniques, a dining room, rooms for living.
We have to take the children to the camp at the expense of their parents.
- Due to lack of funds, do you have to refuse collections?
— Do not refuse, but take children there at the expense of their parents. Not everyone has the means to do this, and not always. It’s good if for a child everything is limited to skipping one collection. But it happens that after this, the enthusiasm of the children and their parents disappears, and they no longer come to classes.
Coaches are forced to win - this is a pernicious system
— At what age does a young man's prospects for professional basketball clear up?
— Before the age of 15-16, it makes little sense to talk about this seriously. All training - from 8 to 17-18 years old - is a meager percentage of those involved. In addition, the pace of development is different for everyone. It happens that children are of the same age, but those born in January perceive and master everything much more slowly than those who were born in November. Although the latter is younger by almost a year.
— Experts see the perniciousness of the system of youth football in the fact that coaches are fixated on the results of the team, and not on the development of the individual qualities of a young football player. Is this also true for basketball?
— Yes, everything is the same with us. A children's coach is confirmed in the category for five years if he shows medals and certificates for performance at city competitions or in the national championship. His salary depends on it. And what his pupil could do at the age of 10, and what he learned by the age of 17, at what level he played, nobody cares. When the salary of a coach depends not only on the place of the team, but also on how much he has trained players at the level of the national team of the city, region, country, then the result will appear. Nevertheless, many coaches work individually with children, but enthusiasm is often lost due to another feature of urban basketball - poaching players from other teams.
— Why is this happening?
- All because of the same obsession with the result. Sometimes a guy is the leader of his team, she constantly fights for high places. But at some point, the team often begins to lose to the main competitor. This does not suit the guy, and coaches from another sports school just need it. The boy is immediately told: "Come to us, we will win together." But in the end it often turns out - neither to themselves nor to people.
— So?
— The guy leaves his sports school, but the new one doesn't do much. The victories of the new team are not encouraging, and soon he ends up with basketball. Especially if it coincides with graduation. But that's not all. The team from which he left became weaker without him - because of this, the enthusiasm of the rest of the guys also disappears. It happens that they also lose interest in basketball. So it turns out that poaching one player from another school ends with the loss of several potential masters for big basketball at once.
Masters should be looked at already at the age of 7
— The main problem in Russia now is the lack of point guards. What are its roots?
— The sooner you start cooking them, the better. Not at the age of 15 to look at who is higher, who is lower, but already at 8-10 years old to look at the makings of the first number and purposefully develop the necessary qualities. Look at the best point guards from Europe and America: they masterfully control the ball: when dribbling, they don’t allow stupid losses, they are able to beat several opponents in a tiny space, they always have many options for developing an attack.
— How to discern the makings of the first number?
— You don't have to look at growth. Generally. The first is leadership qualities. If a child is inclined to lead partners, can build them, arrange them - here he is, a potential leader. The most important condition is intelligence, the ability to make decisions quickly, and the more illogical they seem, the better. So the boy sees more than others. And if he is still with the ball on “you”, then there should be no doubts here.
— And if such a virtuoso swings under two meters?
— Well, that's good. The dream of any coach is to have a tall point guard who will have an offensive advantage over his opponent. In addition, if necessary, it can be moved to the position of the second or third number. For the team - an additional plus.
The one who is currently physically stronger and taller than everyone else is put under the ring by the coaches. Several years pass, and as a result, the guy doesn’t grow up to the center, and he doesn’t know how to do anything in other positions.
— Do other roles also require early specialization?
— Probably not. But how often do we do it? The boys begin to play in the city championship. Again, everyone needs a result, a victory. The one who is physically stronger at the moment and surpasses everyone in growth, the coaches put under the ring. Several years pass, and as a result, the guy doesn’t grow up to the center, and he doesn’t know how to do anything in other positions.
