Whether you’re a team player or a collector, these Pro Tips will help guide your decision.
Basketball shoes are designed with performance, comfort and fashion in mind. Knowing what features best fit your game can help take you from the bench to the paint in no time.
Before you make any decision on a shoe, you need to understand your playing style and capabilities. Do you shoot from long range or are you more comfortable in the key? Does your game showcase agility and speed, or power and aggression? Are you going to crash the boards for every rebound, or hang back and capitalize in transition?
Being over or underequipped in footwear is a problem no athlete wants. Once you understand your playing prowess, you can search for your desired features more easily.
Your typical basketball shoes get separated into three main sections: the upper, the midsole and the outsole. Each section of your shoe has qualities that will affect durability and performance. So, identifying which features fit your needs and playing style is vital to copping the right gear.
ANATOMY OF A BASKETBALL SHOE
THE UPPER
When discussing the upper portion of basketball shoes, the first decision you have to make is which height you want. Basketball shoes are available in high, mid or low heights; each of these appealing to a different style of player.
High: The upper wraps around your ankle to provide an extra layer of support and stability. With this extra coverage often comes extra weight.
Mid: As the name suggests, mid-top basketball shoes provide a happy medium for players in terms of ankle support. The upper material sits right at the ankle to provide some coverage without an all-enclosing design. Mid-tops allow for increased flexibility.
Low: Built for speed and agility, low basketball shoes have little ankle support due to their lower profile.
UPPER SECURITY
There are a number of closure techniques available, laces being the most popular.
You might also find basketball shoes with zippers, straps or hook-and-loop closures. These pieces can add more support to your ankle, especially in high-top models, as well as provide another layer of coverage over your standard laces. Keep in mind added coverage means added weight.
THE MIDSOLE
A basketball shoe’s midsole is where the footwear’s cushioning will be found. This makes this section one of the most essential parts of a shoe’s performance. Most midsoles are comprised of various foams, EVA and compressed EVA foam being the lighter options, compared to polyurethane midsoles, which are dense and more durable.
Brand-specific cushioning technologies are also found in the midsole; namely in the heel and forefoot. This technology is added to give extra cushioning in pressure points that will endure a lot of stress during the course of a game.
THE OUTSOLE
A shoe’s outsole is made of a rubber or synthetic material and is the point of traction for your footwear. When deciding on basketball shoes, look for a relatively flat and wide outsole to provide you with maximum balance. For added grip, search for outsoles that feature a herringbone or hexagonal pattern, since these are designed to help secure your feet and prevent you from sliding up and down the court.
Nearly all basketball shoes are designed with indoor play in mind. Outdoor courts are less forgiving than indoor hardwood ones. So, if you know that you’ll be playing exclusively on outdoor surfaces, look for a shoe with a thicker, more durable outsole. Also, keep in mind that asphalt can eat up your shoe’s tread.
BASKETBALL SHOES BY POSITION
What are the best shoes for shooting guards? Are there specific basketball shoes for centers? Here’s a breakdown of some common shoes worn by position.
Guards: This position requires quick movements on the court. Low-top basketball shoes offer little ankle support, but can help with fluid movement.
Forwards: Forwards need to command the paint. High-top basketball shoes come with extra weight, which can be popular among these larger, more aggressive players. High-top shoes have additional coverage and support.
All-Around Players: If you’re an all-around basketball player on the court, you’ll need to find a nice middle ground. Mid-top basketball shoes provide ankle support, but still give you some room to move around. There is more flexibility in this shoe, which is great for hybrid, multi-position basketball players.
BASKETBALL SHOE SIZING
Athletes have a wide variety of shoes to choose from. But before you lace up your new pair, you need to determine your shoe size. Don’t know where to start? Consult this Pro Tips guide on how to measure your shoe size.
Once you have your size, it’s time to pick the perfect shoe. There are plenty of unisex shoes to choose from, too. For this reason, basketball shoes on our site are displayed in unisex sizes noted within an “M/W.”
Normally, there is a 1-1.5 size difference between male and female shoes. However, this can vary based on brand, so be sure to check sizes before purchasing or trying on a new shoe.
AESTHETICS
When choosing a new pair of basketball shoes, you not only should consider how they’re made, but also how they look. You’ll want basketball shoes that not only function well but make a statement, too.
Show your personality by choosing color schemes and designs that appeal to your tastes. If you’re looking to stand out, choose a style with more bold colors and design elements. If you’re looking to rep your school colors on the court, some of your favorite signature models are also available in team colors to match your uniform.
Basketball shoes can also be worn as a lifestyle option. Looking good and feeling good doesn’t just apply to the court. It can also carry over to the classroom and everyday life. Want to look fresh heading into school? A pair of kicks with signature details from your favorite athlete can help you stand out. Of course, you’ll want to keep them looking brand new. How To Choose Your Basketball Shoes (Buyer's Guide)
Basketball Shoes are the building blocks which make or break your game and so it’s essential to find the right fit for you. The task of finding your ideal shoes can be daunting, overwhelming and a process that takes trial and error before finding your ideal pair. So how do you find your court companion? Well, look no further. This article will provide you with a crash course on the types of basketball shoes and how to choose the right one so that you can go full throttle and guns blazing from game one!
All we need to do to achieve this is look at three basic categories: The ankle collar, cushion, and traction. By following this guide don’t be surprised to find yourself ruling the court and winning the game!
1. The Ankle Collar
The ankle collar length is one of the most differentiating aspects of a shoe that makes it suitable for certain types of players and play styles. By finding the right fit, you can greater use the full potential of your skills and abilities!
The three types of ankle collars include:
High Ankle Shoes
The key feature of high ankle shoes is the reinforced high ankle collar that covers the ankle completely.
Although this makes the shoe heavier, its extra support and cushioning is perfect for the game style of centers and forwards by providing impact protection and ankle protection to support their constant jumping associated with rebounding and blocking shots. This also helps protect against injuries so that you can play longer and harder without worrying about getting hurt!
Mid Ankle Shoes
The mid-ankle collar of these shoes just coversthe ankle and provides an all-rounded performance that has a balance of features perfect for small forwards and shooting guards.
These types of shoes incorporate the ankle protection of high ankle shoes with the responsiveness of low ankle shoes, therefore supporting both the jump and agility of athletic players and allowing them to use their explosiveness to score!
Low Ankle Shoes
Low ankle shoes are best for fast and shifty players who need responsiveness to meet their agility.
The ankle mobility and lightweight factors of these shoes help point guards and shooting guards to run up and down the court, supporting the offence and running back for transition defence. With these shoes being the least strenuous, you can expect to have a comfortable ride in them!
2. Cushion
The cushion is the backbone of a pair of shoes that help achieve a comfortable fit and usage of the shoes.
There are various types of cushioning with each cushion varying for use. However, there are a few things to look at in a shoe’s cushion to determine that you find the right fit for you.
Height Of The Cushion
The height of the cushion is a deciding factor as it also determines how high your foot is from the ground. There is no fixed level or height but rather based on preference. However, there are drawbacks for the extremes. If the cushion setup is too high, you will be further away from the ground and this can cause instability and possible injuries as there less court feel, which is the responsiveness of a shoe based on how close it is to the ground. If a cushion setup is too low, the court feel will be good but the impact protection and effect of the cushion will be close to non-existent. We recommend a height in between that provides court feel and impact protection as seen in the picture.
Bounce Of The Cushion
The bounce of the cushion refers to the level of impact protection a cushion setup can offer. This varies with the type of foam used and new technologies that companies use to find the balance between a cushion setup being too soft or too stiff. The reason that a balance is trying to be found is that a cushion being too soft will not be responsive, therefore not meeting the requirements for quick players like guards. On the other hand, a cushion too stiff will not offer enough impact protection and cannot support jumping players like the forwards.By finding a balance, a shoe will receive good responsiveness and impact protection. This can be checked by leaning on your heel as shown.
3. Traction
The traction is the bottom of the shoe that grips the floor and allows it you to be shifty and agile. Due to this, it is important to have the traction that not only grips the floor but is also durable and will last a long time.
To achieve this, it is important to look at two criteria.
Indoor Or Outdoor
The tractions of shoes can be classified as made for indoor courts or outdoor courts. Indoor court tractions are relatively soft and tacky to grip onto dusty floors. Outdoor shoes have hard soles that are meant to be durable against the rough courts. Choosing the wrong type for the wrong court can either lead to lots of slippages or no durability. Therefore to choose the right type of traction, it is first important to decide which court you will play at. After this, you can determine which type your shoe is by researching the shoe or using your nail to move the rubber. If the rubber is stiff, it is an outdoor shoe, and if not then an indoor shoe.
Traction Pattern
The traction pattern is the pattern of the rubber that determines how grippy a shoe is. For a shoe to have more grip, the traction pattern should be multi-directional. Being multidimensional refers to the pattern reaching in all directions as shown in the picture to the left. Such patterns allow players to use their agility.
By following these three categories and trying different pairs of shoes, you will be able to find your ideal pair of shoes in no time! Have you used this guide to buy shoes? Share a picture of your shoe that you bought using this guide with us on Instagram or Facebook!

Opening the hit parade was the Nike Shox BB4, in which Vince Carter performed arguably the biggest dunk in history by jumping over 218cm French center Frederick Weiss. "Thanks for the sneakers. They really work,” a happy Vincenity reported to the Nike office after he mercilessly left an imprint of his reproductive organs on Weiss’s forehead. With this model, Nike allowed an outstanding athlete to momentarily overcome gravity, thereby approaching the realization of man's long-standing dream of flight and, perhaps, achieving the goal of basketball shoes in principle. Despite the fact that later improved “shocks” appeared on the market, it was this sample that made a technological revolution, becoming the progenitor of the series and all currently existing sneakers with a mechanical cushioning system. The Nike Shox BB4 molds to your foot for incredible stability, protection and distribution. They really work.
19. Nike Air Command Force
release : 1991
Player : David Robinson
Having finished the Naval Academy and served two years in the fleet, Ribbus has been bombarded with a hitch and dragged the modest San Antonio out of the quagmire. He soon appropriately earned the nickname "Admiral" and personalized Nike Air Command Force sneakers. The “chip” of rare Czechs is the ankle-fixing chamber, the air into which is supplied by a pump built into the boot. And even though David achieved his main sporting achievements in other shoes, Billy Hoyle (Woody Harrelson) gave the model a special charm, wearing the classic Command Force with neon interspersed in the cult film White Can't Jump.
18. Adidas t-Mac II
year : 2002
Player : Trace McGraidi
Labron James
9000 9000
The best model not only in the T-MAC line, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, and t-mac and t-mac, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, butt, buttom admittedly, in 2003 in general. Featuring an unconventional, distinctive design and rare balance, without being crammed with technological frills, the T-Mac II is an exceptionally comfortable, stable and safe running shoe. Professionals agreed: both with its appearance and the combination of advantages, the brainchild of Adidas evokes a feeling of completeness and integrity. As well as the game of their carrier Tracy McGrady in the 2002/2003 season, T-Mac spent the most productive year in his career and delighted the audience with all kinds of acrobatic etudes.
17. Nike Air Max2 CB 94
Release: 1994
Player : Charles Barkel
The first nominal model in the Charles Barcley collection is inspired and thoroughness. Chuck's actions were also distinguished by enviable productivity - one of the best matches in his career, a native of Alabama gave out in his favorite boots.
In 1993, Michael Jordan unexpectedly announced his retirement. Shortly thereafter, affordable, functional, high-tech and out of the ordinary, Sir Charles's sneakers became wildly popular, becoming the flagship of the Nike lineup and seriously competing with the Air Jordan products. Were these two events related? Happy owners of Air Max2 CB 94 are unlikely to agree with this point of view.
16. Rebok Question
release : 1996
Player : Allen Iverson
In 1996, Iresson got in the NBA with a laureate of the draft and signed a 10-year contract with Rebok. The first model in the AI signature line - one of the most popular basketball collections - became a bestseller and the biggest success in the history of the Massachusetts company. The second half of the 90s is considered the "Golden Era" in the history of the industry, and the glorious Question made their contribution here - they returned RBK to the ranks of the leading manufacturers and stimulated competition, which determined the emergence of new technologies, materials and design concepts. Original, not without zest, and at the same time high-quality shoes, promoted by the newly minted superstar, have become a real classic of the genre. It is symbolic that it was in these sneakers that Allen left Jordan himself in the cold - in a sense, the "questionnaires" did the same with the dominant brand of His Airiness.
15. Adidas Superstar
: 1969
Player : Jerry West
with a rubber -reminiscent of the rubber protection and not leaving traces on the Parquet of the Subanary Originum could not take the attention of the representatives world leagues and the NCAA. "Shell" was the first in the history of Adidas and basketball shoes with a low cup and an all-leather outer dressing. In the first years after the presentation, "superstars" were worn by almost all NBA players. It was in them that Jerry West delivered one of the most important shots in the annals of basketball, equalizing in the last seconds of the third game of the final series of 1970 years. With the active participation of the guys from Run-D.M.C. German slippers have become immortal, becoming a design icon and an integral part of pop culture.
14. Converse pro leather
year of release : 1976
Player : Julius Irving
Michael Jordan
9000 9000 9000s and early 80s in the development of the industry. A typical representative of the NBA of those years - short shorts, high socks, a puffy Afro and Converse Pro Leather on the legs. They were approved by one of the best players of the generation, Julius Irving, thanks to whom the legendary model is also known as “The Dr. J". It was in them that Irving first made the free throw line dunk public. Six years later, Pro Leather got the nickname "Buzzer Beater" - the famous roll of 19-year-old Michael Jordan brought North Carolina victory in the 1982 NCAA championship final.
13. Nike Air Foamposite One
release : 1997
Player : Anfernie Hardway
Another Milestone - the most powerful line of “Nike Penny”, lending to the KIKSOMES AND KIKSOMEN ratings of basketball shoes of various representatives. The Little Penny commercials were more than just advertisements. As well as the most popular shoes in the Anferni collection - Foamposite One - for the insiders they represent something much more significant than just another successful model. The revolutionary 'Foamposite' technology in the outer shell ensured a perfect fit for any foot, made the shoe virtually indestructible and gave it a chic, futuristic design. It was a breakthrough in every way, making Foamposite One one of the most popular models of all time. No wonder Ray Allen raced in the sister Nike Air Foamposite Pro in His Game.
12. Air Jordan XI
The year of release : 1995
Player : Michael Jordan
In the mid-90s in the 90s, the Air Jordan position left much to be desired. In 1993, Michael Jordan retrained as a baseball player. Models with serial numbers VII, VIII and IX failed to win the popularity of their predecessors, and the “ten” is considered the most unsuccessful in the history of the brand. When the main basketball player of the planet and part-time face of the company returned at 1995th, it became clear that the new model would be of crucial importance: it must correspond to the greatness of the moment and revive the glorious traditions of the manufacturer himself. The
Air Jordan XI lived up to expectations. Luxurious shoes with a patent leather insert in which Michael became the second player in the 1995/1996 season to win the regular season, All-Star Game and Finals MVP titles simultaneously, along with his Chicago team, achieved a record 72-10 record and won the fourth a ring is one of the key exhibits of any, even the most sophisticated collection. Unprecedented success was secured by the film "Space Jam": friendly cartoons and the NBA, Michael saved in the epic eleventh model. If you don't understand people who buy sneakers and then put them on the shelf, dare to find an original Air Jordan XI... 9Nike Blazer Evolution has led them to their current form - "blazers" embody a variety of styles in all sorts of colors and represent the list of the best models for everyday wear. In the early seventies, they were one of the first sneakers with a branded "swoosh" on the sides and the first basketball shoes from Nike - and that says it all. Thanks to decent foot support for its time, stability and light weight, the Nike Blazer has been tested by many great players, but is associated primarily with the name of George Gervin - patented "fingerrolls" and 4 titles of the best NBA sniper were obtained by "Iceman" in them. As Nike adherents say: “We can’t forget who we are and where we come from.” Classic.
10. Air Jordan XIV
: 1998
Player : Michael Jordan
One of the best creations of the Hetfield, an outstanding creator of sneakers, which had a colossal impact on the Industry. Inspired by Jordan's Ferrari 550 Maranello, the low, streamlined model with a logo reminiscent of the famous Italian company took part in an act sacred to the basketball world - in them Michael landed his last shot at 1998 year. But the greatness of the model rests not only on this fact. Despite the fact that the Air Jordan XIV was released 14 years ago, only a few examples have yet been created that can rival the legend in terms of quality and performance. Weaknesses, flaws are absent here as a class, and if you imagine a certain ideal image of basketball sneakers, then the reference copy that opens the top ten comes closest to it.
9. Nike Air Flight Huarache
year of release : 1992
player: “FAB FIVE”
Kobe Brian
In his work Tinker Hetfield is inspired, among other things, architecture (Pompido Center in Paris - Nike AIR MAX 1) , World War II aircraft (Air Jordan V), Michael Jordan's fleet (Air Jordan VI, Air Jordan XIV), and even West African tribal art (Air Jordan VII). As you might have guessed by now, Tinker used the design of huaraches, Mexican leather flat sandals, for the Nike Air Flight Huarache. Inspired by his beloved motto of “less is more”, Hatfield has only stocked the essentials, resulting in an extremely lightweight and comfortable shoe. On the floor, the Huarachas were more famous than the others by the Fab Five from the University of Michigan. The famous silhouette can be seen in many modern models, and by no means only basketball ones - Huarache has long been classified as “eternal”.
8. Puma Clyde
Year: 1973
Player : Walt Frazier
Walt Frazier. The leader of the Big Apple team, extravagant, graceful point guard, one of the best on the court and the most fashionable off it. Not surprisingly, the Clyde was among the first to get a signature sneaker. Possibly the most recognizable model in history, the Puma Clyde quickly became a must-have for the younger generation and their cultural leaders: musicians, DJs, graffiti artists, b-boys and more. The perfect combination of playful, smart play comfort and style, this is how signature shoes from the famous New York aesthete should be.
7. Converse Wearpon
release : 1986
Player : Larry Berd and Madzhik Johnson
In the 80s, the confrontation of the confrontation of Berd and Magdas "Spaszlo, who was abundant by the epic, allowed the leaflet. into a new orbit. In this noble pursuit, the two superstars were assisted by a high-profile novelty from the then leading manufacturer Converse. Progress does not stand still, but 25 years ago, comfortable and reliable Wearpon were the standard of basketball shoes, so they were adopted not only by the leaders of Boston and the Lakers. The sneaker was a huge success, and many of the current stars of the Association literally grew up in them. Needless to say, ordinary fans also did not bypass the model with their attention: sales went off scale.
6. REEBOK PUMP OMNI LITE
year of release : 1989
player: DI Brown
In 1989 REEBOK introduced the unique tumor tem. , a small latex ball is inserted into the "tongue". When you press the ball, air is pumped into the chambers, which ensures that the shoe “adjusts” to the individual feature of the foot. Thanks to ingenious technology, a real war broke out in the market: the insolent RBK dared to challenge Nike themselves. Before winning a dunk contest at 19'91, rookie Dee Brown pumped up his Pump Omni in front of the whole world - and everyone wanted to do the same. A whole trend, a landmark model was an unprecedented success and was sold in huge numbers. Subsequently, the Pump Omni found a second life as an everyday shoe, becoming one of the symbols of the Reebok lineup.
5. Adidas Jabbar
Release: 1971
Player : Karim Abdul-jabbar
Book the market in the alliance with Nike, Karim Abdul-jabbare and Adidas. The iconic shoe for legendary player Jabbar featured technological innovations that were ahead of their time: ankle and heel support for added protection with a double layer of leather, and a slip-resistant sole. Quality guaranteed by the French manufacturer, simple, stylish design, three classic reflective stripes, the image of Kareem on the “tongue”: the signature shoes of the NBA record holder in the number of points scored and the owner of the indomitable Sky Hook could create a real sensation comparable to the achievements of the Jordan brand, but the time for the sneaker boom had not yet come. The Adidas Jabbar hasn't gone mainstream, but it's become a connoisseur's favorite, and it definitely has its own charm. True original.
4. Air Jordan III
: 1988
Player : Michael Jordan
In 1988, Jordan was close to follow the example of Patrick Ying and organize its own crossings. Nike saved the day by entrusting the development of the new signature model of His Air to another rising star, Tinker Hatfield. Having no right to make a mistake, the designer was not afraid to change the technological process and invited Michael to join the work. Everything else is history. It was on the watershed Air Jordan III that the great “Jumpman logo”, Hetfield’s inventive midsole, and Jordan’s legendary “Elephant Embossment” first appeared – this release marked the brand’s transition to the elite. For MJ, who was no longer thinking about going solo, a season in these shoes had about the same meaning: the first MVP of the regular season, the only “Mr. Castle” in his career, and the second victory in the dunk contest. The glory of the innovative model was consolidated by a shock advertising campaign with the participation of Spike Lee.
3. Nike Air Force 1
year of release : 1982
player: MOSES MALOUS
Rashid Wallace
The first model uses the technology of "Nike Air", the emergence of the Nike Air, the emergence of the Nike Air, the emergence of which is the name of the Nike Air, the emergence. on the market comparable only to the effect of an exploding bomb, the model that laid the foundation for the nNIKEE leader that has survived to this day! in branch. The phenomenal copy has been repeatedly reprinted, released in a record of more than 1800 color combinations and modifications, and is sold annually in millions of units around the world. Favorite kicks of all kinds of people: from Nellie to Barack Obama (by the way, sneakers are named after the presidential plane). Sheedy Wallace remained faithful to the “forces” until the end of his career, which is symbolic in the sense of the general reverent attitude towards the ancient model. While you were reading this, another pair of immortal Nike Air Force 1s has been sold somewhere in the world.0003
2. Air Jordan I
: 1985
Player : Michael Jordan
David Stern finished 5 thousand dollars for each game held in these non -corresponding drians -to the league code of the sneakers, but the Air Jordan I was worth it and paid off the hardships of the young genius in full. MJ turned out to be the only one who managed to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists and steals from the very first run. Of course, he won the award for the best rookie of the season-1984/1985. Michael Jordan came to change everything. His Vozdushestvo signature line of sneakers was no exception: it irrevocably changed the industry, at some point spun off into an independent brand. The debut model, which launched Jordan's career and the sneaker boom that grew into a culture, has booked a place for itself in the tops of any ratings. And even now, when the Air Jordan I look oaky against the background of modern examples, they still sell: all the Jordan heritage accumulated in the sneakers shod on your feet helps you move faster and jump higher than everyone else.
1. Converse Chuck Taylor All-STAR
year of release : 1917
Player : Wilt Chamberlain
Oscar Robertson
9000
all that we have just started, we just started in the start of one fine day in 1917 when basketball player Chuck Taylor tried on Converse All-Star sneakers. The representative of Akron Firestones was fascinated by the novelty and from that moment played only in them. Soon the name of the model was changed to Chuck Taylor All-Star, thus, the famous sneakers became the first personalized basketball shoes in history.
