Tim Donaghy: "If I were an NBA fan, I wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry" - Basketball
Tim Donaghy: “If I was an NBA fan, I wouldn’t know whether to laugh or cry”
At the very peak of his career as an arbitrator and at the same time the apogee of gambling addiction, Tim Donaghy writes in his book "Personal remark", his life was fantastic. He made over $275,000 a year as an NBA referee, brought home even more by sharing confidential information with criminals who made money from basketball bets, and lived happily with his wife and children on a gated Florida estate that looked like a country club.
“I felt like the character of Ray Liotta in The Good Boys,” Donaghy explains. “With the only difference being that he was addicted to cocaine, I was a gambler. In all other respects, we were almost identical - life was sweet, and everything that happened was exciting. (Interestingly, the infamous "mattress" nowhere draws a parallel between his involvement with the FBI in a betting and organized crime case and the witness protection program that Liotta's character Henry Hill resorted to to escape mob retaliation.)
Donaghy also fails to talk about the seemingly glaring comparison between how Hill ended up and where he is now: a convicted felon, his wife left, in treatment for his addiction, broke and rejected by society. This is an existence without much future: for his misdeeds, Donaghy will be forced to spend the rest of his life with the status of an outcast.
But even after losing everything and spending 15 months in jail, he is still determined to defy the whims of fate - so as not to become just one of many.
In his book Personal Remark, which hit bookstore shelves this week (originally distributed exclusively via the Internet), Donaghy paints his ordeal with colorful brushstrokes. Reflecting on addiction, he states that he has "become an uncontrollable juggernaut, pursuing his own self-destruction with devilish tenacity" whose "soul has become nothing". The rich supper that followed the successful raid on the tables of Atlantic City is portrayed as "a veritable orgy of food and drink ... a tribute of our time to the gluttony and excesses that Roman soldiers indulged in on holidays in some distant conquered lands."
“Felt like the character of Ray Liotta in The Nice Guys,” Donaghy explains. “With the only difference being that he was addicted to cocaine, I was a gambler. In all other respects, we were almost identical - life was sweet, and everything that happened was exciting"
Well, well, in general, hardly anyone will confuse this guy with Hemingway. But the way Donaghy presents his fall in "Personal Remark" is captivating due to two aspects that can be highlighted in his story. On the one hand, it reveals every last detail of his crimes, laying out the revelations and their impact on the NBA; on the other hand, as SBNation.com columnist Andrew Sharp writes, it is a mesmerizing "study of the human fall," desperate and on display.
Yahoo! Sports spoke with Donaghy by phone, hoping to spot both trends.
- Most of the characters appear in the book in an unseemly light. Particular attention is drawn to the way you describe Dick Bavett, saying that his training was "akin to graduating in the art of game manipulation perfected" and that he allegedly claimed to be "an indispensable person for the NBA" on the shoulders which lay down the concern for obtaining the desired results in a particular series. Have you spoken to Bavetta or any of the other people you've spoken to badly about since the book came out?
– No, I didn't talk to him. I think that in these circumstances I quite consciously went into conflict, naming specific names. However, these were unique situations and unique conditions, and when I decided to publish these stories, I could not help but mention the names, because I wanted the fans to have a complete understanding of what I did and how I did it.
- Part of the full presentation is to explain your methodology and what you were guided by when placing certain bets. You mentioned Dick Bavetta, Steve Javie and Joe Crawford as referees who you knew were biased and therefore bet on the matches they officiated. Can you name the referees on whose matches you preferred not to bet?
- Hmm, I don't want to talk about the fact that there were referees that I tried to stay away from - rather those whose matches were of interest to me. The situation was such that I looked at the meetings they served, more or less ... I watched the meetings where specific referees worked, whether it was a game away or at home, how events unfolded the last time they refereeed this or that team and with whom together they worked. And when I could come to a conclusion on what difference it was worth betting on, I looked in the newspaper - if there was a handicap of four or five points, then I gave instructions to bet on this game.
- The results of this system and methodology have recently been called into question (ESPN columnist Henry Abbott looks at the main trends outlined by Donaghy (Dick Bavetta tried not to let one team get a big lead, Steve Javy had a personal antipathy for Allen Iverson, and Joe Crawford, on the contrary, he favored the point guard "76s", since his grandson idolized the Answer), and indicates that there are too many inconsistencies in the theory of the offending arbiter). Some of the claims made in the book have been met with a fair amount of skepticism by journalists, statisticians, and in some cases conversations cited in the book. How do you react to claims that some of these moments were either misremembered or made up?
- They are not invented. In fact, I think that those who are trying to discredit me do it for a certain kind of motive.
- What motives do you mean?
- Look at ESPN, for example. Naturally, since they have the rights to broadcast NBA matches and are trying to discredit everything stated in the book, they give data that has nothing to do with the principles by which I chose the matches. I have my own data that I'm collecting right now. They will be published shortly. This material confirms what is written in the book.
- Can you tell us a little more about the information you collect?
- Not now, I'm still in the process. But this is something that will be made public in the next few weeks.
- You say you took into account a number of factors that influenced the principles of betting, and not just thought: "Well, Steve Javy does not get along with Allen Iverson, so you need to take this game." But you, indeed, often write in the book that the choice of an arbitrator was a key factor. Do you ever get the feeling that you are betting too much on certain arbiters and need to diversify your approach? Or did you think that since you're winning, you should stick with what works?
– That's right, stick to what works. I have been very consistent and successful in setting specific bets on specific matches, betting on those matches very consistently and winning.
- You often appear in the press in connection with the release of the book. Don't you think that in some publications you are biased? At the moment, how do you perceive the reaction to your book?
- I think that the reaction to the book shows that the fans are well aware that unusual things have been happening in the NBA over the past 10-15 years. We have received hundreds of calls and letters where people say they know the book is true.
- In the afterword to "Personal Note", you write about what you think needs to be done to restore the fans' trust in the work of NBA referees, and that you see the league as flawed in this. You write: "If I were an NBA fan, I wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry." Do you still consider yourself an NBA fan? And at the moment, in your opinion, in principle, can the fans trust what they see every day?
- I think deep down I'll always be a basketball fan, but in terms of the NBA, I'm certainly not a league fan at the moment. I haven't watched a single game in two years. You say you're from Boston, right?
- I'm from New York but live in Boston.
– All right, New York and Boston, the two meccas of sports. You can't just sit there and tell me that the fans in Boston or New York who are very knowledgeable about the game endure all this and don't see that a lot of unusual things have happened in the NBA in the last 10 years. They can no longer get the maximum pleasure from watching NBA games, and I think that the situation is getting worse.
- You emphasize that, although you took into account inside information when betting on certain teams, you never used your position on the court to decide the result or influence the score, doing it to your advantage. Okay, why not? In the book, you describe yourself as a headless gambler, someone who is mainly obsessed with the game and money, not with any consequences of his actions. Where is the difference, in your opinion?
- I think the difference was that I didn't want to get caught. I knew that I was doing what was wrong and did not want to suffer for it. How could I be found? Only if I make the wrong decisions on a consistent basis that will affect the outcome of the matches, so that the bet wins. I mean, everyone would be on their guard, and the NBA and the FBI would spot it right away. So I wasn't going to do it and didn't want to do it.
- But it's also true that you write about other referees who took such measures in almost every game - you call it "a culture of favoritism and manipulation ... which influenced the outcome of matches." There is an acceptable disagreement here with what you are saying if other referees have ventured to blow such whistles every night.
- That's what they do, and I used that information to make winning bets. But the bottom line is that the FBI did a thorough investigation of all the bets I made and the matches I bet on. They looked at the footage and came to the conclusion (like the NBA) that I never once sued any team to influence the outcome of the match and secure a win.
- One of the book's central themes is how you've always loved being the center of attention, whether it's as the fun guy who makes his buddies laugh or the referee who's got all the eyes in the arena when his whistle blows. What you are now saying and the attendant media attention on you - trying to stay in the spotlight - does it give you the same emotions?
– Well, naturally, this form of being in the spotlight, given all the mistakes I've made in my life and the position I'm in now, doesn't give me much joy. Of course, in the eyes of the world, I fell very low, which, of course, is shameful ... it not only affected my life, but also the people I loved most, my family. I felt that the fans deserved to know what I did, how I did it, and the whole truth behind the scandal. Over the past two years, my name has been covered in the press, many stories have been invented, but there was not a shred of truth in them.
- So you believe this gives you a chance to get justice?
- This gives me the opportunity to tell the story of my life. And besides, it's a situation that might help someone else, someone who might be thinking about going the wrong way and not getting caught. Help them understand that they will not only ruin the lives of themselves, but also of the people they love - their families.
- This is similar to an article about you in the Philadelphia Inquirer that says you are looking for opportunities to lecture on this subject. It's right?
- I'm not sure I'll be given this opportunity, but if it does, I'll certainly be interested.
- Naturally, the real world dictates its own terms - the profit from the book will go to pay damages (217 thousand dollars) that you were imposed by a federal court, and in general everyone has to work. Besides money, what did you hope to gain by such a statement and a public account of your trial? In the book you often talk about faith - do you see the book as some kind of redemption?
- I think this is an opportunity for me to help someone. Naturally, for me personally, this is very unpleasant - what I did and the preferences that moved me - and yet it affects not only me, but also people close to me. And I think it's a very compelling story, so it can help others as well.
- Your father was also a referee, and you say you respected his commitment to the idea that players should decide the outcome of matches. It shouldn't have anything to do with people with whistles or anything. You say it's different in today's NBA. What opportunities do you see in the NBA to make players decide more?
- Of course, when it comes to the NBA, they must first decide if it's a competition for athletes or entertainment and shows. If they say competition, then they should oblige these referees to judge by the rules, to be able to be impartial, not to judge and at the same time think about what is good for the league and what is not.
- You mentioned that you don't expect anyone in the league offices to follow your advice. But from the fan's point of view, the idea has a sound grain - no one wants to see how the matches are decided in moments like the one in which Brent Barry did not stand on the penalty line.
- That's right. NBA fans, if we talk about the main cities, people are very knowledgeable. I am convinced that they will not allow David Stern to hide his head in the sand and refrain from commenting on such matters. I think that this will create a real outcry about some of the responses to such situations, and popular outrage will provoke significant changes so that matches are judged properly. I think in the end it will make the league bigger, better and stronger than it has ever been before.
- Do you think some kind of initiative should come from the players? After all, since fans are willing to spend money on tickets, broadcasts, or merchandise anyway, what's the point of a league changing anything?
- I think players adapt to everything. They're adapting to the style the NBA wants to see with these kinds of rule changes. I think that the initiative should belong to the fans, and it seems to me that what we see today comes from the fans. We get phone calls every day, retired players, people who are associated with the NBA, all of whom say they hope for dramatic changes with the release of the book ... And I sincerely believe that such changes will follow. I think that they will have no choice but to make changes and restore the belief in the hearts of the fans that this is a competition of athletes.
“The worst thing is when I sit down and start thinking about what I've done to myself – not that it's terrible in itself. I look at my four children, my parents and my ex-wife, and then it really hurts me.”
- It may be just a minor detail in the whole story, but you start the book with a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson that I find very interesting ("What lies behind us and what lies before us is just only small things compared to what lies within us.” Was it your idea?
– Yes, it was my idea. My brother sent me a letter to the prison, and the main idea of the whole letter was concentrated around this phrase. I thought it would be nice to start my book with her.
- What do you think lies in you, and how do you imagine your further life path, wherever it takes you?
- I think there is someone inside me who is devastated by making the wrong choices in his life, I hope he will continue to work to develop this story and help other people understand that choices are very, very important in life. I have said this many times, but your choice affects not only you. The worst thing is when I sit down and start thinking about what I've done to myself - not that it's terrible in itself. I look at my four children, my parents and my ex-wife, and then it really hurts me.
- One of the most dramatic scenes in the book takes place in your father's office, just as things are starting to fall apart. You look at the wall where there was a framed newspaper picture of you together, and seeing an empty space there, you realize that he took it off, ashamed of what you were doing. You can literally feel the tension in the air. How is your relationship with him now?
- Naturally, when I called my father on Father's Day to tell him about the situation he was in, he was shocked and depressed. And you know, we had a pretty tense relationship for a while, but in any relationship between parents and children, you always do what needs to be done and support your child. He was by my side the whole time, and I think that made the bond between us even stronger.
- You have four young daughters. How has this changed your relationship with them?
- My behavior has changed dramatically. Now I am much more patient with them, I want to spend every free minute of my life with them (when they are not at school). And I hope they feel confident enough to realize that I made terrible mistakes, but we all make mistakes and that's what I've learned in life. And so, I hope that in a few years, looking back, I can say that I have become better.
