How to coach a girls basketball team

USA Basketball - 5 Keys to Being a Great Basketball Coach

If you want your youth basketball team to have an All-Star experience all season, there are a wide range of ideals you need to focus on to make the experience as positive as possible.

Here are five ways that you can be an All-Star basketball coach.

All-Star Qualities

  • Sportsmanship - Remember basic courtesy and good manners? Use your practices and games to reinforce these basic principles. Make sure your players can give a firm handshake with eye contact to officials and opposing coaches, as well as a high five to opposing players.
  • Teamwork - Teach your players that "we over me" is what most often leads to "us over them," in team sports competition. Encourage your players to be selfless and supportive teammates in both losing and winning efforts.
  • Positive Attitude - Life is not fair and basketball is worse. Help your players get over it and still do what they need to do to succeed. Playing sports is one the best ways to practice overcoming adversity and preparing to handle tough times in life. Humor helps!
  • Respect - Pay it forward and get it back. How a coach interacts with other adults--coaches, parents and officials--will naturally influence the behavior of your players. Be mindful that you are a role model and are always being watched. Insist that your players respect coaches, officials and opponents--like you do. Have the courage to enforce your rules with every player and parent involved with your team.

Coaching

  • Philosophy - Want a surefire way to be a great youth coach? Lighten up! Here's a tip. Not one of your games will be Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Billions of people don't even know you exist, let alone feel that your practices and games are important. Recreational league and even elite travel team coaches should understand that kids want to play sports and to have FUN! Let your players figure things out. Ask questions, but don't give instruction or answers. Stop teaching so much and give your players a chance to learn. Watching them grow will be fun for you too!
  • Communication - Have a team meeting to start the first practice of the season, or as soon as possible thereafter. Limit your postgame analysis to positive things that occurred in the game and deal with what went wrong by establishing a specific goal to work on starting at the next practice. Ask parents to delay or even eliminate the dreaded postgame interview with their child. When you need to correct a player, use the "compliment sandwich" State something positive the player did well, give a very specific correction, then restate the first positive thing.
  • Continuing Education - All-star coaching requires continuing education. I have been privileged to learn the game of basketball from seven coaches who are in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Each one of them was always striving to learn more. In your efforts to learn, make sure the substance of the material is appropriate for the skill, age and maturity level of the players that you coach.
  • Use Resources - There are several organizations that offer assistance to youth coaches. Do an online search for youth coaching information sources. Read books, watch videos and attend coaching clinics in-person whenever possible. One hour online could make you a better coach.

Practices

Play to learn, play to practice, and you will win when you play in games. Remember how much fun you had growing up when you used to just go outside and play with your friends? We advocate using the "compete to learn" approach to practice--it lets kids play and have fun while competing. This type of practice, using competitive drills, does a better job of preparing players to compete in real games. Technically, this is called transference. What you do in practice carries over into what you do in games.

  • Individual Skills - Want to improve your team's ball handling? Games like dribble knockout are very popular. Every player must have his or her own basketball. Coach starts the game. Every player must dribble constantly, stay in-bounds and try to knock the ball away from all other players in the game. Lose control of your basketball or go out-of-bounds, and you're eliminated. Boundaries for 10-12 players could start as half the court. After several players are eliminated, the boundary is reduced to only inside the 3-point area. Boundary is reduced again to the free-throw lane. Finally, when there are just two players left, they play the "finals" in the free throw half circle.
  • Team Concepts - Run half your offense by playing 2-on-2 or 3-on-3 restricted to one side of the floor. For example, make even (by size/ability) teams and conduct a 10-minute tournament using an action like the pick and roll. Allow for 20-second timeouts and allow players teach themselves how to make the play work.

Game Strategy

  • Keep It Simple System (KISS) - Basketball is a simple game. Keep it simple! If you are a regular reader of instructional material, you might think that you need to have lots of practice drills and a complicated or intricate system to win games. No, you don't. Establish one or two alignments and three or four actions, and that's it. At the youth level or even in the NBA, most successful coaches try to have their team master a few simple things. 8-10 year olds can do this successfully. Try KISS at your next practice and even in your next game, your team will show instant improvement!
  • Simple Transition Offense (Fast break/press break) - Score a lay-up in less than five seconds without dribbling.
  • Simple Half-Court Offense (Ball movement/teamwork) - Everyone must catch and make a pass before anyone can shoot!
  • The Best Offense Ever Designed - Give the ball to Michael Jordan and get out of the way. You can't get much more simple than that! However, that is an actual "play," as it is part of the "complicated" triangle offense. The triangle is a patterned motion offense that has several basic actions such as give and go, pick and roll and give the ball to Michael and get out of the way -- otherwise known as a clearout. By the way, that offense has won nine NBA championships and you, even as a youth recreational league coach, can run some of its actions to win games in your league.

Make All-Star Memories

The experience of playing on a youth sports team can affect a child's development as a person. How will you affect your player's communication, cooperation, goal setting and work ethic? How will your players remember this experience 10 years from now? Most won't remember the score.

If your team employs the ritual of getting together after every game for ice cream or pizza, takes a field trip to a college or pro game, or attends a movie together, your players will remember those good times long after they forget the score of the game. Parents sometimes enjoy these social events more than the kids.

When working with young kids and running basketball drills, there are three very important concepts you need to consider:

1 - Kids need to be highly active!

Just by using fast paced drills and keeping things moving, your players will have more fun and get in better condition. Your kids should be breathing hard and their hearts should be pumping. It's good for them!

Avoid standing in lines as much as possible and keep the ball in their hands as much as possible.

2 - Kids want to feel successful!

With very youngs kids, competition doesn't always serve as a motivator. You should always provide activities that help them build their skills and confidence. Strive to focus on the learning process instead of measuring up to those around you.

You'll want to avoid adding pressure and competition until the players have developed their skills, confidence, and become proficient with the basics.

Put them in situations where they can succeed.

3 - Kids want to have lots of fun!

This is an important stage for young players and your actions could determine whether they enjoy sports or not.

It's important to make things fun so they can improve and become confident.

Youth basketball drills don't have to be boring. Almost any drill can be modified to provide high activity, high success, and high enjoyment.

Youth Basketball Offenses

I believe that using a very simple motion offense is the way to go for youth teams because it teaches them how to move and the players will begin to learn how to get open and play the game.

Motion offense also allows you to spend more time teaching fundamentals and skills (which is very important for young players).

The challenging part about motion offenses is that there are SO many options that it's hard for players to know what to do. But you can easily solve that problem by making simple rules and starting with the basics.

For example, you might want to just with just a couple simple options for your motion offense. You could start by teaching the players proper spacing, away screens, and v-cuts. Once they master those skills and get VERY proficient at cutting properly and setting good away screens, then you can start adding more options and building on your foundation.

You can add ball screens, rolling, and so on. Just don't go too fast! Make sure they have good fundamentals before you start adding stuff.

You can learn about developing motion offenses by looking at these resources: Offensive Theory & Introduction to Basketball Offense

You can also try this very simple patterned offense that you can use as a play or your entire offense:

Youth Basketball Plays

When it comes to teaching plays to youth basketball players, it is typically better to teach them concepts on how to play the game of basketball.

  • Triple Threat - How to get in triple threat position every time a player catches the ball.
  • Footwork - Quick stops & pivoting
  • Cutting - Basket cuts & back cuts
  • Screens - Off the ball & On-ball
  • Eventually, reading screens.

Best Overall Advice for Youth Basketball Coaches

1) Keep things fun!
Did you know that the #1 reason kids quit sports is because it's not fun anymore?!? It's very important to play plenty of games and keep a positive attitude.

Be positive and make things fun. Even if the kids get cut from the team or decide not play basketball at an older age, they'll still have a positive image of basketball and may continue to play it recreationally when they get older.

If you act like a drill sergeant when coaching a bunch of 10 year olds, the kid will get a negative image of basketball and have negative emotional feelings when thinking of basketball. Kids will also get sick of basketball if they play TOO many games each year. As a result, they will not likely play basketball when they get older. It can even affect their feelings towards fitness in general. If a person dislikes fitness and becomes inactive, they are more likely to be unhealthy!

2) Be Positive & Do NOT Correct Every Mistake!
Don't be too critical and stop them to make a correction on every mistake. Let them play and learn themselves. If you stop or correct them on every mistake, you'll get a basketball player with low confidence that is always unsure of what to do, instead of a confident player that reacts to the defense.

Now, if they continue to make the same mistake over and over and over, show the player a better way to do a certain thing. For example, if you see one of your players stand straight up every time they touch the ball and a defender crowds them and causes the offensive player to travel. Say to the player, "Way to hustle, Johnny! Let me show you something that will help you when the defender crowds you. When catching the ball in this position, keep your hips back with your knees bent, and pivot. Be ready to attack. Then if the defender comes to crowd you, it will be easy for you to dribble right by him!" Notice, I did NOT focus on the negative and say "Stop bringing the ball up!"

Don't focus on the negative. Focus on the way to help them. Let's be positive as coaches!

3) Allow your players to be successful!
Sometimes competition is not a motivator for young kids. However ALL kids need to taste success (and hopefully lots of it). Now this doesn't mean winning. It means getting better and succeeding in practice. Allow your players to run drills that they can succeed at and feel good about. Celebrate small accomplishments and successes with your players.

4) Teach life lessons in your practices!
Read this article about teaching life lessons and improving team bonding.

5) Don't worry about winning!
You don't have time to worry about winning. There's only time to do the right thing... If you do things "right", winning will eventually be a by-product of your actions. Be patient. True success takes time to do things right. It doesn't happen overnight.

You must first build a SOLID foundation for these kids to build on. Taking the time to build that foundation will cause you to sacrifice winning some games. Trust us. This is better for your players in the long run.

6) Avoid year-round basketball and play other sports!
There is a reason that NBA GM's don't like their ELITE, PROFESSIONAL basketball players competing in the summer World Championships and Olympics. It's been scientifically proven that playing a sport year-round leads to tired muscles and a tired muscle has a much HIGHER chance of injury. Now, if these PROFESSIONAL athletes with proper nutrition and training are supposed to avoid year-round basketball, don't you think that a DEVELOPING, young athlete (most likely without proper nutrition and training) should be avoiding it as well?!?

If you force your child to play, it can also lead to burnout, injury, and resentment of the sport or fitness altogether. People are much more driven when they choose to do something they enjoy, rather than being forced to do it. If you want your child to enjoy basketball, play GAMES with him when they want to, and watch basketball-related activities with them. 9 times out of 10, kids enjoy sports that their parents enjoy if approached the right way.

At this age, it is best to improve overall athletic ability which is done by playing multiple sports, such as gymnastics, baseball, soccer, martial arts, football, track, volleyball, softball, swimming, and so on. Keep in mind, that you want to have seasons for these sports. Avoid playing 2 or 3 sports at once and multiple practices on the same day. If you want to focus on one sport at age 16 or 17, GREAT. Not at age 10 or 11. And who knows what your child will take an interest in or show talent in at age 10? Most of the time, things change a lot in the next 6 or 7 years!

7) Don't press or play zone defense!
You can read why and get advice here.

8) Use small basketballs and lower rims!
Using rims that are too high and basketballs that are too big will RUIN your players shooting form. They are NOT strong enough yet.

Do we send 6 year olds to Yankee stadium and start throwing from the big mound? No, we start with tee-ball, then parent pitch, then little league (close bases), and move up.

It's ridiculous to throw 5-10 year olds on a full size court with 10 foot rims and youth basketballs that are way too big! It's no wonder so many kids have horrible shooting form when they get to high school!

9) Teach the right things!
Just keep in mind that if you can teach your young players the following skills, then you should feel good that about what you accomplished and know that you're teaching your player the right things (that they need to be successful)!

Your young players should be able to:

  • Dribble with their left and right hands equally well.
  • Make lay ups with their left and right hands equally well -- and jump off the proper foot (left foot when shooting with right hand, and vice-versa)
  • Perform a jump stop without traveling.
  • Pivot on their left and right foot without traveling.
  • Perform accurate chest, bounce, and overhead passes.
  • Perform a defensive slide (feet wide, good balance, staying between the offensive player and the basket).
  • Shoot a basketball with proper form.

These simple skills should be your number priority and your goal should be to help your players master these skills. Once they have truly mastered these skills, you can start building from there.

How women's basketball works, Sport

Novgorod University has many sports sections for both boys and girls. One of the most successful NovSU teams is the women's basketball team. Lawn decided to go to the gym on one of the training evenings and find out more about women's basketball.

There are nine people in the team, and they all play basketball in the sports hall of the Humanitarian Institute on Monday, Thursday and Friday.

The trainer's name is Maria Ishimova. She is 26 years old, but, like many athletes, she looks younger than her age. She is distinguished from other basketball players only by her tenacious gaze: during our conversation, she did not stop watching the field.

Technique

Maria has been playing basketball since 1999, almost 20 years. In the past, she played for NovGU in the ASB (Student Basketball Association). But the ASB has clear regulations: players over 25 years old cannot take part in competitions. Also, only university students play in the association.

As Maria says, basketball is everything for her, it's her life, and that's why after graduating from the university the girl didn't quit sports:

— I can't imagine my life without basketball. At first I played on my own, and now, when I don’t have the opportunity to play in the ASB, I coach the Novgorod State University team.

Basketball is the most technical sport. It actively involves the legs, arms and head. And it's not about power moves - in basketball you have to think:

- My coach, Oleg Mikhailovich Kruglenko, always said that only smart people can play basketball, there is no place for a stupid one. Because you always need to calculate a few steps ahead of all your actions on the field. I don't want to offend other sports, but basketball is the best game in the world.

Height and laziness

Half a dozen girls are running around the hall. You expect model height from basketball players, but many of the players look like they have an average 166 cm:

- High height for basketball, of course, is a plus, but you can cope with 1.62, like me, - answers the question about Mary's growth. - The main parameters, or rather, qualities, for a good basketball player are diligence and responsibility.

Basketball is a team sport. Here you do not play for yourself, you have a team, you have a family. And if you foolishly make a mistake, you will let everyone else down. And it is important to constantly work on your technique, on dribbling, throwing. Don't skip workouts and don't be lazy.

Your laziness can become a team loss.

Let's turn our attention to the parquet. Despite the fact that now the girls play for two different teams against each other, the feeling of unity and friendship does not disappear anywhere. And this is understandable: according to the coach, all the girls are responsive and friendly and quickly include newcomers in their team.

Dreams

Basketball players do not have a sports club. There is a team "NovGU Veliky Novgorod", for which they play in the ASB. The women's team of Novgorod State University plays in the top division, they went to competitions in Tula, Velikiye Luki, Smolensk. From everywhere the team brings victories.

Establishing a club is Maria's dream, which she plans to realize. This requires a great desire and financial investments. There is already an idea how to name the club - in honor of the memory of Oleg Mikhailovich Kruglenko, the coach who devoted his life to creating women's basketball in Veliky Novgorod.

His business lives on, new girls regularly come to basketball lessons:

— First of all, we teach you how to dribble, because basketball is impossible without dribble. Then we learn how to make the right throw. Don't hit the ring without a proper throw. After that, we introduce the course, explain our tactics. And then we learn how to properly defend. Without protection technology, gaming activity is impossible. Just like without tactics. We have our worked out combinations, but we are trying to introduce new ones. I study other people's matches, watch games and take new tricks, - says the coach.

Team philosophy

Training ends. On the face of each of the girls, joy and a fuse are visible: the game for them is definitely not an obligation, but a vocation. Basketball players come up to us and talk about what basketball means to them. Spoiler: basketball is a family:

- Basketball is a tactical game, similar to chess. And basketball brings up discipline, character. And teaches friendship. Even if we compete in training, we become a family off the court: we celebrate our birthdays, weddings, children's birthdays.

Ksenia Khoroshaeva basketball player, 26 years old

- I like that in basketball we play as a team, we support each other. From the game, from the atmosphere you get pleasure. You come to training, and that’s it: for two hours, the rest of the problems disappear, only the game remains.

Alena Kordina basketball player, 18 years old

I have been playing basketball since the fifth grade. Basketball for me is a family, these are people who are always there, this is my team. The philosophy of basketball is unification. It has no room for quarrels.

Elizaveta Kruglikova basketball player, 20 years old

- I've been playing for 10 years. I like basketball. He attracts me with emotions - those that I get on the site, which I get from my team. Here at basketball, we are all one big family.

Annotation

Unfortunately, the Russian women's basketball team has not earned the right to participate in the Olympic tournament. In the women's Premier League in 2016-17 season the foreign basketball players from the USA, Australia, Spain, Serbia, Belarus teams have playing - participants of the summer Olympic games in 2016. On the basis of the survey-interview with the members of the national teams of Belarus and Serbia we have analyzed the features of the stage of direct preparation of the teams for the main event - the Olympic Games.

Keywords: the Olympic games of 2016, basketball, women's national teams of Serbia and Belarus, immediate preparation for the Olympics.

The main competitions of the four-year period are the Olympic Games. Last year, the attention of specialists, athletes, and fans was riveted to this most important sporting event on the planet. The national teams of the countries participating in the games have done a titanic work for four years preparing for the competitions. At the same time, the preparation of athletes immediately before the Olympic Games was of great importance, since the task was to bring and keep the athlete at the peak of sports form, to realize the maximum opportunities achieved in a timely manner, not to lose, but to increase the accumulated potential.

The national teams of Belarus and Serbia occupy significant positions in the world women's basketball. The Belarusian team from year to year demonstrates a fairly high level of performance at major international competitions. Three times she was in the top five strongest teams in Europe, in 2010 she took 4th place at the World Championships, and twice took part in the Olympic tournament.

The Serbian team has not risen above tenth place in major basketball tournaments for a long time. However, over the past five years, the Serbian national team has made an absolutely natural breakthrough from the bottom positions of European and world basketball to the leading places on the podium. The Serbians took 4th place at the 2013 European Championship, 1st place at the 2015 European Championship and 3rd place at the 2016 Olympic Games. victorious traditions of Serbian basketball began. The effectiveness of the performance of junior (youth) teams, and, accordingly, the quality of training of sports reserves, largely determine the subsequent successful performance of national basketball teams in the international arena [4, 5].

At the preliminary stage of the basketball tournament in Rio, the Belarusian team managed to win only one victory in six matches, according to the results of these games, the team did not get into the playoffs. By the difference between victories and defeats, as well as goals scored and conceded, the Belarusian team took 9th place. The Serbian national team made it to the playoffs with two wins and three losses, having managed to continue the fight for medals. Losing in the semi-finals to the Spanish national team, Serbia won the bronze medals of the 2016 Olympic Games in the confrontation with France (table 1).

that the Belarusian national team is an age-old team, more than half of the players in it are over 30 years old. The bet was made more on the experience of the players and teamwork, rather than on speed and endurance. It should be noted that the strength of the Belarusian national team is center players and heavy forwards, such as Elena Levchenko and Anastasia Veremeenko, on which the game was mainly built, both in attack and in defense. Coaches demanded smart, combinational basketball and competent defensive actions from the players.

The Serbian national team, on the contrary, is a young team, only three players from the squad are 30 years old or older. The backbone of the team is made up of players born in 1989, who demonstrated a high level of performance even at international youth competitions. The team is dominated by defenders and light forwards. The coaching staff relied on speed, quick breakthroughs in attack and tight,

aggressive defense. From the words of the members of the national team, the zone defense did not train at all in preparation for the Olympic Games.

Preparations for the Olympic Games in Rio were different for the teams of Serbia and Belarus. The Belarusian team started joint training at the beginning of May. The team took part in the qualifying Olympic tournament in France from June 13 to 19 for the right to participate in the Olympic Games. In early May, a team of 18 people gathered in Minsk. In the first three days of training, they had a retracting character, a medical examination was carried out for the players. After that, the team went to Raubichi, to the ski base, where they trained for two weeks. Then the team returned to Minsk and took part in the international tournament in memory of Khalipsky, which was held from June 2 to 4. 4 teams took part in the tournament - Turkey, Japan, New Zealand and Belarus. The Belarusian team took 2nd place, losing only to the Turkish team. Immediately after the tournament, the national team played two more friendly games at home with the Polish team (June 7 and 8), and won both meetings. After friendly games, the team went to France for the Olympic qualification tournament, where they took fifth place and won the right to participate in the Olympic Games. After the tournament, the players were given a two-week rest. On July 8, 2 weeks before leaving for Brazil, the team gathered again in Raubichi with 15 people and began direct preparations for the main starts. At the end of the preparatory camp, another medical examination was carried out, 2 days of rest, and on July 25 the team flew to Brazil.

For the Serbian national team, preparations for the Olympic Games began on July 3 in Belgrade. However, in June, 18 members of the team were sent a self-training plan to gain the necessary physical form for joint training camps. Many players trained on their own. For example, Tamara Radochai began training on May 10, worked individually with a physical training coach. The first camp in Belgrade lasted a week and was retracting. After that, a medical examination of the players was carried out. On July 10, the team went to Zlatibor. The team trained in the mountain resort for 10 days, after which they returned to Belgrade again. The players were given 2 more days off. In early August, a week before the Olympics, the team went to Brazil.

The training process of the Belarusian national team was mainly built in the mode of three training days, two training sessions, then a day off. Training usually lasted 2 hours. At the beginning of the training, warm-up exercises were carried out, then time was given for stretching in statics, after which the players performed a warm-up in motion. In the main part, the tasks of the training cycle were solved.

During the two weeks spent in Raubichi, just before the flight to Brazil, the team had to restore both physical form and establish team interactions. During each microcycle, at least one training session of the Belarusian women's basketball team was held in an open area, stadium, in the forest and was dedicated to running and speed-strength training. Often the players were offered exercises in the form of "fartlek" - an alternating combination of high-speed running and running at a free pace for different distances and times. Each microcycle ended with a running warm-up and cross at a free pace, after which recovery activities were organized for the players (bath, cryosauna, massage, lymphomat).

In the microcycle, one morning workout was necessarily held in the gym. For each player, an individual work plan was drawn up depending on the role, height and weight, exercises with maximum weights and with their own weight, with stuffed balls, according to the TIH system were used. To develop and maintain speed endurance at the end of training, it was necessary to run 10 sites in one minute. The coaching staff paid attention to working out all possible forms of protection and safety nets. However, personal time pressure in the training process

practically did not stand out. Since the team has a strong line of attack - centers, the game was built mainly on them. More than 20 team interactions were worked out with the withdrawal of attacking players to attacking positions.

The training process of the Serbian national team was largely different from that of the Belarus team. The microcycle, as a rule, was built as follows - two training days of two workouts, on the third day one workout and half a day off, then two days of two workouts and a full day off. The training sessions lasted an hour and a half, but were very intense.

The first gathering in Belgrade was retractive. In the morning training, attention was paid mainly to physical and technical training, in the evening tasks were performed in a game form and on tactics. For all the time of preparation for the Olympics, the team held only one training session at the stadium to diagnose the physical condition of the players in the first cycle in Belgrade. According to the coaches, the change of coverage has a negative effect on the musculoskeletal system, ligaments and joints of the players, so all the main work was carried out in the gym.

In the first half of July, in the training microcycle, training sessions took place in the gym, but the exercises were performed with light weights, solely to maintain muscle tone. The basic exercises were with rubber and body weight. The training camp in Zlatibor was more focused on the physical preparation of the players. The end of July and August is dedicated to working on tactics. A lot of time in training was devoted to working on defense, a large number of exercises were performed to work out personal pressure throughout the court, playing 1 on 1, 2 on 2, playing in a numerical advantage, etc. At the end of training, static stretching was performed. Of the recovery activities, the players were offered only massage, swimming in the pool and "ice baths".

It should be noted that the Belarusian national team left for Brazil on July 25, although the first games in Rio started on August 6. This step was taken in connection with the need for acclimatization, as well as the opportunity to play several games with the teams of the countries participating in the Olympic tournament. Upon arrival, already on July 26, the team held the first training session and continued preparations for the main competitions. However, on the eve of the Olympic Games, the team failed to hold a single friendly match. According to the players of the team, this factor had a negative impact on the results of the performance. During training in Rio, the Belarusian national team was dominated by tactical training.

The Serbian team arrived in Rio a week before the start of the tournament. Upon arrival in Brazil, the team engaged in one training session per day lasting an hour and a half, the main attention was paid to tactics and maintaining physical fitness. The Serbian national team played two friendly matches immediately before the Olympic tournament with the team of Brazil and Australia.

Before the start of the start of both national teams, the coaching staff conducted a large number of theoretical classes, video reviews. The actions of the players were analyzed in detail, the tactics of the opponents were analyzed. Each player was given playbooks with combinations of opposing teams. The preparation of the national teams of Serbia and Belarus is reflected in table 2.

CONCLUSION

It is obvious that the success of the national teams is based on modern technologies and balanced training of teams at all levels, starting with the reserve teams and ending with the main team of the country [1, 2, 6]. In preparation for the Olympics, advanced knowledge and methods of scientists, coaches, medical workers, and all specialists involved in this process are accumulated. The pre-competitive stage is the final moment of this work, undoubtedly, it is of great interest from the standpoint of the organization and structural construction of the training process, the means, methods, training technologies used, the inclusion of additional effective influences.

In the two considered options for preparing one of the strongest teams of basketball players, different concepts and approaches to competitive activity, training process, adaptation and recovery of athletes are presented. At the same time, it should be taken into account that the content of team training depends on the individuality of each player and on the unique technologies of each coach. The information received conveys invaluable experience, which will certainly be in demand in the future.
