Now Nike has found its most advanced fit solution yet: the Nike Adapt, a platform that creates a truly personalized fit through the combination of an advanced lacing system, app and constantly updated stitching, featured in the new Nike Adapt BB basketball shoe.
“We chose basketball as the first sport for Nike Adapt deliberately because of the demands that athletes place on their shoes,” says Eric Avar, Creative Director of Innovation at Nike. "During a typical basketball game, an athlete's feet change, and the ability to rapidly change shape by loosening the shoe to increase blood flow and then tightening it again is a key element that we believe will improve the athlete experience."
How shoes work
When a player puts on the Nike Adapt BB, a sensor senses the amount of tension needed on the leg and adjusts it to keep the leg supported. The tensile strength of the lacing is capable of pulling 32 pounds (roughly equal to the strength of a standard parachute cord) to secure the foot through its full range of motion.
This is where the brain or FitAdapt technology comes into play. Players can enter different fit settings using the Nike Adapt app on their smartphone. For example, during a timeout, a player can weaken the system. You can even assign a different fixation setting to warm up. In addition, players can receive firmware updates for FitAdapt technology as they become available, improving fit accuracy for players and providing new digital services over time.
