How the NBA reimagined its postseason trophies
When NBA Commissioner Adam Silver awards the league champion a reimagined Larry O’Brien Trophy next month, it will mark the culmination of an elaborate five-year process that required collaboration from a 20-member internal working group, a renowned basketball-focused artist and a luxury jewelry company.
The result is the first conceptual upgrade of the iconic trophy — all 25.5 inches and 30 pounds — since Tiffany & Co. first began designing and manufacturing it in 1977. And while the Larry O’Brien Trophy — it will retain the name it’s held since 1984 — is the most visible of the league’s array of evolved trophies, more than three dozen of the 51 overall league honors have seen changes, with more to come.
The multiyear process to reach this point proved particularly rewarding, said 28-year NBA veteran Christopher Arena, head of on-court and brand partnerships, because it involved such a wide swath of individuals often engaging in spirited debate over specifications and themes. Artist Victor Solomon and Tiffany collaborated on the six postseason trophies, which for the first time included conference finals MVP trophies named after Magic Johnson (Western Conference) and Larry Bird (Eastern). Solomon also worked closely with the league to design and create the remaining trophies for the NBA and G League.
“It’s been a passion play for so many people here — everybody was pivotal,” Arena said. “There was some debate, but it was all for the right reasons, like we were all trying to just get to the right answer. It was an incredible experience. … The trophies are literally a history lesson for our game.”
Artist Victor Solomon and Tiffany & Co. collaborated on the NBA’s six postseason trophies.nba
The impetus for change came as the league in recent years explored trophy concepts for NBA 2K League, Basketball Africa League and a G League rebranding. Conversation began in earnest about creating aesthetic consistency among the league’s trophies. And the timing of the 75th anniversary of the league — with an eye both on its rich history as well as its future — was ideal.
Two years ago the league assembled the working group that included a cross section from every department — basketball and business communications, the partnerships team, the events team, player development, marketing, creative services and more. It met every Friday at 9 a.m. Arena was chief among key executives in the process and Silver remained involved throughout.
Solomon provided an initial vision, a jumping off point, emphasizing that there should be consistency with the color gold in all showpieces. But there were numerous drafts. In fact, Arena showed SBJ early digital renderings from last August of many trophies.
While there were as many as 12 drafts with variations for some trophies, only three versions of the Larry O’Brien Trophy were considered throughout. Executives were mindful to avoid tinkering too much with the cosmetics of a trophy that has been an indelible facet of so many famous championship images, including Michael Jordan cradling the trophy in tears after he won his first title in 1991. Solomon called the iconic silhouette untouchable.
“That’s why that one trophy was one we didn’t want to modify too much,” Arena said. “We knew the consistency of it was important.”
NBA players also provided input during the process, stressing that the gold sphere should be reserved only for the championship trophies. The evolved Larry O’Brien Trophy isn’t much different in size and weight; executives didn’t want to make it too cumbersome for players and coaches to lift.
But there are notable changes. Gone is the square foundation, replaced by two circular discs. The top lists the team names of the first 75 league champions. The bottom will include champions of the next 25 years, culminating with the NBA’s 100th anniversary.
In addition, the central column and ball were tilted forward to the right, with sterling silver markings added to highlight the net design. The vision was twofold: They wanted it to align with the return of the classic NBA Finals logo this year. And they wanted the forward tilt to signify the league looking ahead to a prosperous future. Also of note: Because they were mindful of the league’s storied past, there was never consideration to change the namesake from Larry O’Brien, the league’s third commissioner from 1975 to 1984.
The Bill Russell MVP Trophy also underwent a makeover. Its base now consists of two discs, a design that aligns with the championship trophy, and is now finished in gold vermeil along with the sterling silver markings for the net design.
For executives, one of the most memorable parts of the yearslong process came when the namesakes of the reimagined trophies (or their families) were informed. For instance, NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum and Michael Levine, senior vice president of entertainment and player marketing, were among the few on a Zoom call with Magic and Bird, two iconoclasts who wasted little time before ribbing each other as they had for decades.
Now as the league eyes the future, whether for a potential in-season tournament or another tentpole event, other yet-to-be-conceived trophies loom on the horizon.
“We’ve got to find a place for David Stern,” Arena said. “I think we all understand that. And so we’ll probably sit down over the summer — I can see us every summer sitting down and figuring out, ‘OK, is there room for new namesakes? Is there room for new trophies? How do we want to approach this?’”
The Secretary General of the International Basketball Federation: we reinvested €20 million in the World Cup
Andreas Zagklis spoke about preparations for the world championship, the financial component of the tournament, as well as relations with the NBA and the Euroleague
The Cup will be held in China in September world basketball championship for the first time in five years. The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) decided to breathe new life into the tournament by introducing a number of innovations. Thus, the basketball world championship was shifted a year ahead so as not to overlap with the football one, a qualifying tournament appeared that lasted two years, and the final stage draw ceremony turned into an independent bright event for which it was impossible to get a ticket. TASS spoke with FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, who spoke about preparations for the World Cup, the financial component of the tournament, as well as relations with the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Euroleague.
— What are FIBA's expectations from the upcoming tournament? And of course, what income do you expect?
— Our top priority is to provide fans around the world with the highest quality basketball that can be enjoyed and will help grow our sport. In terms of numbers, FIBA has reinvested more than €20 million in the development of the World Cup. Since the World Cup in Spain in 2014, we have generated €265 million in revenue. Now we are confident that the upcoming tournament will reach an unprecedented level thanks to innovations: a qualifying tournament has appeared, the number of teams has increased from 24 to 32, the number of games has increased from 74 to 92. Arenas in China have a larger capacity and, as a result, a larger market.

The Russians will play with the teams of Argentina, South Korea and Nigeria at the KM in basketball - 2019
— The World Cup draw took place last week. What was special about this event?
- This was the first draw in the history of basketball, from which it was possible to make a real event. In addition, it was one of the most attended draws in the history of sports - tickets were sold for it and there was a full house. 8,000 people attended the draw in Shenzhen, along with numerous senior basketball figures. And of course, Kobe Bryant and Jason Derulo maximized their star presence at the ceremony. The draw was broadcast live around the world via regular TV, Youtube and Facebook.
— How many fans and basketball fans will attend the tournament?
— We really hope that this World Cup will exceed all our expectations. It is difficult to predict now, since ticket sales have only recently opened, and the sample is quite small. There are four different categories of tickets and there is sure to be something for everyone. We are working with our partners in China and we are sure that the arenas will not only be crowded, but will also provide a unique experience and emotions for local and foreign fans.
— Security is one of the key issues at any major sporting event. What about World Cup security? Will measures be stepped up in cities?
- The World Cup will have the highest level of security. Let's not forget that, by definition, China is a country that pays high attention to security for all events on its territory. In 2008, the country hosted the Olympic Games and gained additional experience. In addition to this, FIBA has added all of its event management know-how and experience. The security approach will be top notch.

Korstin: Russian basketball players are able to reach the playoffs of the World Cup
— The World Cup was preceded by a qualifying tournament — for the first time. How do you rate it?
- We put the world championship in first place in our competition pyramid. In terms of scope, the qualifier was the biggest event we've ever hosted in nearly 90 years of history. We took care of the centralized TV production of all games, worked hand in hand with the 80 national federations that participated in the qualifiers and with our five regional offices. Now we have a tournament where every game counts because of the 2020 Olympics. All this gives our federations an excellent opportunity to grow.
In the 16 months between November 2017 and February 2018, the qualifier proved to be a success. He returned the teams to the basketball fans, the matches of which can now be watched during the season. There were countries where fans for ten or more years have not seen how their national team holds a tournament match at home. This did not contribute to the development of basketball in many countries. Therefore, many qualifying matches were played to a full house. The teams also got the opportunity to see young, talented basketball players in action, to deepen the roster, which is especially important for those teams that have already solved the problem of qualifying for the World Cup. Whatever they say, in general, we assess the experience with the introduction of a qualifying tournament as positive.
- Will the time come when the teams will play in the optimal line-ups in the qualifying games? When will clubs easily release their players to national teams?
- Optimal lineups - this is most likely the question of the head coaches of the national teams. The availability of all basketball players at all stages of qualification is something that clubs, teams, and FIBA as well, should work on. Then we can achieve results.
— With whom does FIBA have better relations now: with the Euroleague or with the NBA?
- FIBA is the governing body of basketball worldwide. Our mission is to develop our sport, so we must maintain relationships with all structures and organizations. Both the NBA and the Euroleague are one of these organizations. They are part of the structure of world basketball. But it must be admitted that FIBA has an excellent working relationship with the NBA. Together we carry out various projects around the world. They recently took part in the creation of the African Basketball League, which is due to be launched in 2020.

— How does FIBA look at the prospect of leaving the best clubs from the national championships and the participation of such teams only in the Euroleague?
- In team sports, especially in Europe, clubs are selected within national championships, based on the results of which they can take part in continental competitions. The creation of a closed league and the departure of leading clubs from some national championships will lead to immediate devastating consequences in these same championships. Especially financial. For example, there will be less income from television rights. At the same time, there will be long-term negative effects associated with the development of national championships in such countries.
- A few years ago, FIBA created the Champions League. Are you satisfied with its development?
— We are very satisfied. As well as our partners - 11 national leagues and the Union of European Basketball Leagues (ULEB), which make up half of the league's shareholders. In less than three years, the Champions League has established itself as a significant competition for clubs that qualify based on their success in the domestic leagues. This year we were pleased to welcome the German "Brose" from Bamberg and the Israeli "Hapoel" from Jerusalem among the participants. This proves that the tournament is attractive. The numbers also tell us this. The digital growth of the Champions League is unprecedented and unparalleled in the world of basketball in terms of league development.
- Could there be a situation like the National Hockey League (NHL) in 2018 where the NBA won't let players go to the 2020 Olympic tournament?
- We do not consider such a scenario. The participation of professional basketball players in the Olympics, including those from the NBA, was agreed 30 years ago. The best players get a chance to showcase their skills at the Olympics. And this applies to all countries, not just the US. As I said, we have a great relationship with the NBA. This is an organization that runs a first-class league and, in addition, has a clear idea of \u200b\u200bwhat is beneficial for the development and promotion of basketball. Of course, the Olympic Games are an excellent stage for these purposes.

FIBA considers international windows an important part of the system, but is ready for dialogue with the Euroleague
all other parts of the world are getting dimmer and duller. FIBA sees this as a problem? What steps will be taken to change the situation?
- Our relationship with the NBA is now a wonderful period. They have evolved from communicating about the players' ability to participate in various tournaments to a full-fledged partnership, in which the NBA Deputy Commissioner is a member of the FIBA Central Council and the Executive Committee. In other words, the NBA is an integral part of the decision-making process in world basketball. It seems to me that you are only looking at the league itself, but as mentioned, the NBA goes beyond these 30 clubs. They do a lot of work outside the US, bringing invaluable benefits to the development of basketball. Their philosophy contributes to the development of the sports community. We can mention the Basketball Without Borders project, which is a joint product of the NBA and FIBA. It has been held annually since 2001, gathering future athletes and basketball fans on six continents, in 28 countries, in 35 cities, in 56 camps. BWB brought together more than 3.3 thousand participants from 129countries. And over 250 different current and former NBA and WNBA players have joined the project in these 18 years.

Revda against Samara for the Basketball Cup of Russia: Sport: Oblgazeta

February 27 in Revda will host the first final match for the Russian Basketball Cup. The local "Temp-SUMZ-UMMC" takes "Samara". The winner of the trophy will be determined on March 12, after the return match, which will be held at the opponents' site.
Hands At first glance, the undisputed favorite in the final is Samara, which has been in the group of leaders of the First Division of the Superleague throughout the season, while Temp is again in a fever this year, and theoretically Revda, if they will also squander points, they may still be left without a playoff. In Revda, a very qualified team of players gathers every year, but it is not possible to create a single team from them. In addition, the obvious problem is that the Tempe head coach has Alexey Lobanov there is no “Plan B” to be applied in cases where something on the site does not work.
But the coach of Samara Igor Grachev showed even by playing in Yekaterinburg a week ago that he can pull out matches that for some reason are not in favor of his team. Yes, Ural is not the most difficult opponent for Samara now, but nevertheless, this time they jumped above their heads, the leader was close to an unplanned defeat and pulled out the game only in overtime. Actually, the winning team differs from just a good team in that it not only takes “their” points, but also gnaws out those that seem to be lost.
It seems that a lot in the final games will depend on the form in which the leader of "Samara" will approach them Anton Glazunov . In general, his situation is extremely interesting - a native of Samara and a pupil of local basketball, he spent most of his career in the teams of the Sverdlovsk region (Ural and Tempe), since then he lives with his family in Yekaterinburg, and plays the second season for Samara. In the match against Ural, Glazunov was injured, which created additional problems for the guests. But it is unlikely that any of the Tempa fans are now hoping that the captain of Samara will not be able to play in Revda. The chance to see this magician of the ball in action is not to be missed.
Ilya Evgrafov , player of the Temp-SUMZ team in 2001-2011, record holder in terms of the number of matches played and points scored:
- I think that Samara has a very balanced squad, a dynamic game has been built. There is a great sniper Vladimir Pichkurov who shoots almost every time he gets the ball, Anton Glazunov remains the best number one in the Super League today. "Big" excellent, including recently arrived from the VTB United League Alexander Vinnik . He had little match practice at Parma, but he is still a good center and he will help the team.
Samara has an evenly distributed game - the team performs well both under the shield and from the perimeter, while Temp plays more from the perimeter. I think that the Revda team is strong in team play to a greater extent, and Temp will have a chance of success if they play aggressive defense.
Anton GLAZUNOV, captain of Samara:
- You have to fight with each opponent at full strength, tune in to 100 percent. We will try to create a reserve in the first match in Revda, which will allow us to feel more confident at home.
Igor GRACHEV, head coach of Samara:
- I do not agree that Samara is the favorite in the Russian Cup final. Yes, "Tempo" plays unevenly, but he shows very good basketball. Proof of this is the victory in the quarterfinals over Nizhny Novgorod, which, perhaps, has the best selection of Russian players in the VTB United League. Plus a victory over a very well-equipped Sakhalin. So we are waiting for an extremely serious opponent. This is the final, and two games, I'm sure, will be very hard.
Motivation Samara basketball has a rather branched and complicated pedigree, but still, the current club can be considered the heir to the Krasnye Krylia, which won the Russian Cup in 2012 and 2013. By the way, in 2012, the trophy as part of that team was mined by Dmitry Arteshin , playing in Revda for the fourth season, and a year later, Viktor Zaryazhko , also now a Tempa player.
Samara is the current champion of the First Division and one of the main contenders for victory this year. Whereas "Temp" once again disappoints its fans more. Yes, theoretically, the team of Alexei Lobanov can still shoot in the playoffs, where they still have to get, but there, in order to win the trophy, you need to win nine matches, while in the Russian Cup you need to be stronger in the sum of two matches.
Again, Temp has silver and bronze medals in the Superleague, bronze and at least silver medals of this draw in the National Cup.
One more touch. Of all the leaders, it is with Samara that Temp plays, perhaps, the most successfully. And the team from Revda won the bronze medals of the Russian Cup in 2016, defeating Samara in the match for 3rd place, which was considered the favorite even then. Anton Glazunov played for Temp, and Dmitry Arteshin and Maxim Kiryanov played for Samara , currently Tempe players.
Coaches An interesting detail - the coaches of the teams meeting in the finals Igor Grachev and Alexei Lobanov in the 2000/2003 season played together for Evraz Yekaterinburg, with which they achieved the highest achievement of Sverdlovsk teams in post-Soviet history - fifth place in Division A » Superleague, at that time the main tournament in the fickle basketball hierarchy. Moreover, when Igor Grachev left for Lokomotiv Rostov the following summer, it was Alexei Lobanov who inherited the powers of the team captain from him.
Grachev started with the teams of the Children's and Youth Basketball League and gradually grew to the main team, in which he proved himself from the very best side. At first he assisted his father-in-law, Honored Coach of the USSR Sergey Zozulin , and now he has been working independently for the third year. Aleksey Lobanov, on the contrary, immediately began his coaching career as the head of the teams in the lower leagues. He also had little experience of assisting such well-known specialists as Ainars Bagatskis and Dmitry Shakulin , but it may not be enough.
Regulations The cup tournament is the only one where a draw can be recorded after a single match (in championship games in such cases one or more 5-minute overtimes are assigned until someone still wins). According to the current regulations of the Cup of Russia, the winner will be the team that will be stronger in the sum of two matches.
