Scholarships and grants in the UK
What is important to know about scholarships in the UK?
- Scholarships in the UK are public, university and private.
- The most famous state program - Chevening - fully covers room, board and a year of study in the master's program. Other large state grants ( GREAT Scholarships , Commonwealth Scholarships ) are not available to citizens of Russia and the CIS.
- Average size university scholarships - 10-30% of the cost of education.
- Universities award scholarships based on academic merit, financial status and personal circumstances.
- There are also sports and creative scholarships, but they usually do not exceed 1,131-2,262 USD.
Scholarships in the UK
Education in the UK is one of the most expensive in the world. The average year of study costs 13,574-19230USD. It will take about 11,312 USD more to live.
Grants and scholarships will help reduce costs. They are very different: this is a small payment of 250 pounds, and a discount on tuition, and full payment for accommodation and meals. It is difficult to win large scholarships: usually there are only a few winners, and several thousand applications come.
UK spending
Cost | Average cost |
96 USD/month |
To navigate in all the diversity, you need to know three basic terms:
- Scholarship - scholarship for achievements in studies or sports;
- Grant - the same as a scholarship, but usually paid once;
- Bursary is most often a one-time payment to a needy student.
Scholarships in the UK are given by universities, individual faculties, the government, and private organizations. In this way they are trying to attract the most talented students from all over the world.
Scholarships from universities in the UK
Universities often give out scholarships in the form of tuition discounts. For bachelors, the most common discount is 10-30%, for undergraduates and doctoral students - up to 50%.
To get a scholarship, you first need to go to university. The main selection criterion is the average score of a diploma or grade for A-Level / IB. Most often, funding is issued for a year with the possibility of extension.
Universities publish information about their scholarships in sections Funding and Scholarships . But often the data there is incomplete. Therefore, to find out the details, it is better to contact the university directly. Contacts are listed on the same pages.
The commission selects candidates on the basis of academic achievement, scientific achievements of publications and conferences, social activity and leadership qualities. In theory, a scholarship can be obtained with triples, but it will not be a very prestigious university, which, with the help of funding, is trying to attract students. The amount will be small: a maximum of 1500-2000 GDP. They will not affect your financial situation much.
Scholarships are available for bachelors, masters, and PhD students. It will be easier for the last two to win a scholarship: the competition is lower than in the bachelor's degree. And the amount of payments for undergraduates and PhDs is usually higher. Unlike bachelors, they conduct their own research, which means that it is profitable for the university to finance them.
University scholarships come in several types.
Academic Merit Scholarships
Academic merit scholarships are awarded for academic achievement. Taken into account:
- Average GPA - ideally excellent;
- Level of English - preferably not lower than IELTS 7.0;
- Availability of scientific publications;
- Participation in conferences.
Basically, academic merit scholarships are a tuition discount of up to 50%. But there is also full coverage. For example, Gates Scholarship at the University of Cambridge. The student is additionally paid 19,796 USD per year for housing and food. In total, Cambridge raffles 80 scholarships annually, and 25 of them go to students from the United States, so the competition is very high. You can read more about the requirements on the program website.
Universities often automatically consider their applicants for academic merit scholarships , but large scholarships like Gates must be applied for separately. It may include a motivation letter and a research plan. Sometimes candidates need to go through an additional interview.
Large scholarships are calculated mainly for undergraduates. For bachelors, the size of merit-based scholarships rarely exceeds 3,394-5,656 USD.
Many universities have alumni scholarships . These are discounts for graduates who continue their studies at the master's program at the same university. If you, for example, graduate from the University of East Anglia, then studying for a master's degree there will cost half as much.
Scholarships for specific areas are often found - subject-specific scholarships . The University of Surrey gives a discount of up to 50% to MBA students. You need to apply as early as possible - so the chances will be higher.
For subject-specific scholarships, good grades and background in the chosen specialty are important: have you studied it before, have you written articles, do you have work experience. It happens that candidates are selected by projects and portfolio.
There are scholarships for Foundation preparatory programs. Such is, for example, at Newcastle University. Its size is from 11,312 USD to 22,624 USD. Moreover, the first half of the scholarship is paid while studying at the preparatory program, and the second - after successful admission to the bachelor's degree. 99-67 872 USD/year.
Most low income scholarships cover only part of the student's costs. The average payout is 1,131-3,394 USD/year, large amounts are rare. Such scholarships are given out so that the student can afford a trip to summer school or field research. To cover the training completely, they are not enough.
In addition to the financial situation, the commission usually takes into account academic achievements. Therefore, a high GPA and a good portfolio will still come in handy.
British universities often award scholarships based on personal circumstances and - the student's personal circumstances. This vague wording means that the scholarships are designed for those who, for some reason, find it difficult to get an education: due to economic inequality, racial or gender discrimination.
Oxford, for example, offers scholarships to citizens from economically poor countries. The list includes most of the post-Soviet space. And for Russians there is a separate scholarship - Hill Foundation Scholarship. It fully covers tuition and living expenses.
