Scholarships and grants in the UK

What is important to know about scholarships in the UK?

  • Scholarships in the UK are public, university and private.
  • The most famous state program - Chevening - fully covers room, board and a year of study in the master's program. Other large state grants ( GREAT Scholarships , Commonwealth Scholarships ) are not available to citizens of Russia and the CIS.
  • Average size university scholarships - 10-30% of the cost of education.
  • Universities award scholarships based on academic merit, financial status and personal circumstances.
  • There are also sports and creative scholarships, but they usually do not exceed 1,131-2,262 USD.

Scholarships in the UK

Education in the UK is one of the most expensive in the world. The average year of study costs 13,574-19230USD. It will take about 11,312 USD more to live.

Grants and scholarships will help reduce costs. They are very different: this is a small payment of 250 pounds, and a discount on tuition, and full payment for accommodation and meals. It is difficult to win large scholarships: usually there are only a few winners, and several thousand applications come.

UK spending

Cost Average cost
96 USD/month

To navigate in all the diversity, you need to know three basic terms:

  • Scholarship - scholarship for achievements in studies or sports;
  • Grant - the same as a scholarship, but usually paid once;
  • Bursary is most often a one-time payment to a needy student.

Scholarships in the UK are given by universities, individual faculties, the government, and private organizations. In this way they are trying to attract the most talented students from all over the world.

Scholarships from universities in the UK

Universities often give out scholarships in the form of tuition discounts. For bachelors, the most common discount is 10-30%, for undergraduates and doctoral students - up to 50%.

To get a scholarship, you first need to go to university. The main selection criterion is the average score of a diploma or grade for A-Level / IB. Most often, funding is issued for a year with the possibility of extension.

Universities publish information about their scholarships in sections Funding and Scholarships . But often the data there is incomplete. Therefore, to find out the details, it is better to contact the university directly. Contacts are listed on the same pages.

The commission selects candidates on the basis of academic achievement, scientific achievements of publications and conferences, social activity and leadership qualities. In theory, a scholarship can be obtained with triples, but it will not be a very prestigious university, which, with the help of funding, is trying to attract students. The amount will be small: a maximum of 1500-2000 GDP. They will not affect your financial situation much.

Scholarships are available for bachelors, masters, and PhD students. It will be easier for the last two to win a scholarship: the competition is lower than in the bachelor's degree. And the amount of payments for undergraduates and PhDs is usually higher. Unlike bachelors, they conduct their own research, which means that it is profitable for the university to finance them.

University scholarships come in several types.

Academic Merit Scholarships

Academic merit scholarships are awarded for academic achievement. Taken into account:

  • Average GPA - ideally excellent;
  • Level of English - preferably not lower than IELTS 7.0;
  • Availability of scientific publications;
  • Participation in conferences.

Basically, academic merit scholarships are a tuition discount of up to 50%. But there is also full coverage. For example, Gates Scholarship at the University of Cambridge. The student is additionally paid 19,796 USD per year for housing and food. In total, Cambridge raffles 80 scholarships annually, and 25 of them go to students from the United States, so the competition is very high. You can read more about the requirements on the program website.

Universities often automatically consider their applicants for academic merit scholarships , but large scholarships like Gates must be applied for separately. It may include a motivation letter and a research plan. Sometimes candidates need to go through an additional interview.

Large scholarships are calculated mainly for undergraduates. For bachelors, the size of merit-based scholarships rarely exceeds 3,394-5,656 USD.

Many universities have alumni scholarships . These are discounts for graduates who continue their studies at the master's program at the same university. If you, for example, graduate from the University of East Anglia, then studying for a master's degree there will cost half as much.

Scholarships for specific areas are often found - subject-specific scholarships . The University of Surrey gives a discount of up to 50% to MBA students. You need to apply as early as possible - so the chances will be higher.

For subject-specific scholarships, good grades and background in the chosen specialty are important: have you studied it before, have you written articles, do you have work experience. It happens that candidates are selected by projects and portfolio.

There are scholarships for Foundation preparatory programs. Such is, for example, at Newcastle University. Its size is from 11,312 USD to 22,624 USD. Moreover, the first half of the scholarship is paid while studying at the preparatory program, and the second - after successful admission to the bachelor's degree. 99-67 872 USD/year.

Most low income scholarships cover only part of the student's costs. The average payout is 1,131-3,394 USD/year, large amounts are rare. Such scholarships are given out so that the student can afford a trip to summer school or field research. To cover the training completely, they are not enough.

In addition to the financial situation, the commission usually takes into account academic achievements. Therefore, a high GPA and a good portfolio will still come in handy.

British universities often award scholarships based on personal circumstances and - the student's personal circumstances. This vague wording means that the scholarships are designed for those who, for some reason, find it difficult to get an education: due to economic inequality, racial or gender discrimination.

Oxford, for example, offers scholarships to citizens from economically poor countries. The list includes most of the post-Soviet space. And for Russians there is a separate scholarship - Hill Foundation Scholarship. It fully covers tuition and living expenses.

Computer Science Women and students from families with an income of less than 39,592 USD/year 50% discount on tuition
University of West London Undergraduate Undergraduate students income 11 312 USD one time
Oxford University Master (or second Bachelor) All Citizens of Russia Full payment for tuition, accommodation and meals
University of the Arts London Masters All Refugees and citizens of economically poor countries from families with an income below 56,560 USD/year Full tuition, room and board
Masters All Low Income Students Full Tuition
King's College London

One of the biggest scholarships for athletes is at the University of Birmingham. It pays from 4,525 USD to 11,312 USD. To participate in the competition, you need to play in the junior league at the international level. The most popular college sports in Britain are football, athletics, rugby, tennis, basketball, rowing, golf and cricket.

In most universities, a student who receives a scholarship is required to play for the university team or participate in events. For example, at the University of Bristol, gifted musicians receive $1,131 a year and in return perform in the university choir.

Chevening

There are several large state scholarships in Britain, but most of them are not available to citizens of Russia and the CIS. However, students from all over the world can apply for the most famous state program, Chevening .

The scholarship is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its goal is to attract the most talented students to the country. The program fully covers:

  • Tuition fees for master's or doctoral studies;
  • Visa and air travel expenses;
  • Monthly allowance for housing and food: in London - USD 1,283, outside London - USD 1,037.

Terms and Conditions

The program has several conditions:

  1. Bachelor's degree. The minimum requirement for a GPA is 4.0 out of 5.0, but 4.7 or higher is better. The competition is very high, only 2-3% of applicants [1] receive a scholarship.
  2. Experience : Two years or 2800 hours. Any work is taken into account, whether it is official employment, part-time work, freelance or private practice. It is not necessary that work experience is related to the chosen specialty. But then you will need to explain why you decided to change your profession and what this experience gave you. Supporting documents are not required.
  3. Apply for a master's degree in the UK. In your application, you indicate three one-year programs in order of priority - you must be accepted into at least one. You need to think carefully about the choice - once the application is submitted, it will not be possible to change it. You should also check if you are suitable for the selected university according to the requirements. The minimum IELTS score in most universities is 7.0.
  4. Return home after the end of the program. It will be possible to move to Britain on a work visa only after two years .

Application

The application includes a questionnaire, four essays and two references. The essay, as always, is the most important thing.

The first essay of is about your leadership experience. It should clearly show how your decisions led to the achievement of the goal. Let's say you worked for a nonprofit animal rights organization. You organized various events, campaigned on social networks, contacted the city administration and, as a result, were able to raise money for a new shelter for homeless animals.

Focus on the contributions that you personally made you , not “we” or “our team”. You should not write that you were the head of the class at school or at the university. Such an experience does not reveal your leadership qualities well. The commission appreciates examples from the place of work more.

The second essay is about networking. Networking is the art of making professional connections. Here you should tell how you use networking to solve problems. For example, while preparing your application, you contacted other "Chivners" - the winners of the program - and asked them questions about the competition.

At the same time, it is important to show that you not only know how to benefit from acquaintances, but are also ready to share your experience and be useful. Tell us what you can offer other "chewners", which of your skills and knowledge will be in demand. After all, Chevening is not only a scholarship program. It is also a community that brings together professionals from all over the world.

The third essay is about the selected master's programs. Here you need to explain why these universities and these programs are suitable for achieving your goals. What is unique about these universities is laboratories, teachers, courses. You need to convince the commission that your choice is not accidental. To do this, show how the chosen field of study relates to your academic and professional experience.

The fourth essay is about your career plans, short and long term. They must be specific and justified. You can set a global goal, for example, to change the attitude of society towards environmental issues in your country. But you need to explain what specific steps you want to take for this and how the Chevening program will help you. For example, you want to host an eco-forum, create a course on Coursera , or launch a startup. A Chevening will give you knowledge, skills, acquaintances.

All four essays should be related by a common theme, but the information should not be repeated. You can write one large general essay first and then break it into blocks.

Next, you need to get two recommendations in English. The recommendation can be written by a teacher or an employer. It, again, should reflect your leadership abilities and personal qualities. See the program website for detailed instructions.

Competition stages

The competition for Chevening is held in several stages.

  1. Apply September 3rd to November 3rd Dates subject to change. Check the deadlines on the scholarship website;
  2. By the beginning of February, the names of candidates who have passed the first stage become known;
  3. From March 1st to April 30th interviews take place at the British Embassy. The commission will ask questions about the goals of study, plans, choice of universities, work experience. They may also ask about who you look up to in your professional field and what new you can bring. The commission wants to see that you have your own unique vision of the world, and you need to show it.
  4. In March-April, without waiting for the results of the interview, you need to apply to universities. This can be done earlier, depending on the deadlines on the university website.
  5. The results of the interview will be known by the beginning of June, and by July 15 the winners must submit an invitation from the university to the commission. Then all that remains is to apply for a visa and get ready for the flight.

Dates may change. Check the deadlines on the official scholarship website.

Private scholarships

Some programs are funded by private sources such as companies or non-governmental organizations. Scholarships from companies are often designed for specific areas. Sometimes a student is even offered an employment contract after graduation or right during training. And scholarships from non-governmental organizations usually target particularly vulnerable sections of society, such as ethnic minorities. However, there is also a competition for academic achievements.
