Any sport loving child (or adult) would love these moist chocolate Basketball Cupcakes. They are topped with a Swiss meringue buttercream, orange sprinkles, and licorice laces. If you ask me, these cupcakes are a major slam dunk!

These basketball cupcakes are easy to decorate and they taste delicious! This would be a great treat to make for a boys basketball themed birthday party, March Madness (practically a month-long celebrated holiday in our home), or any basketball themed event. (I mean honestly, they’re so stinking’ cute and they have that whole basketball textured look too, thanks to the orange nonpareil sprinkles).

Ingredients & Supplies Needed

Making these festive and cute cupcakes is easy, here are the basic ingredients you’ll need:

  • 1 batch of cupcakes (12-15 count)- you can use any cupcake recipe you’d like… chocolate, vanilla! Heck, you could do strawberry, coconut, it’s up to you.
  • Orange sprinkles – I bought this kind on Amazon.
  • Frosting of some kind – I used Swiss meringue buttercream, which oh my gosh, it’s so so so good! Also you can keep the frosting out at room temperature for up to 2 days. Which means you can make these cupcakes in advance and they’ll still taste amazing after 2 days. (I would know, because I was eating these cupcakes several days after making them. I just want to note, if I hadn’t known they were 2-3 days old, I never would have guessed it). Could use chocolate buttercream if you’d like.
  • Licorice laces – these are used to make the basketball laces on the cupcakes.

A few notes about the licorice laces, I couldn’t find any black ones so I made my own. Instructions on how to do this are found below the “Ingredients and Supplies Needed” section.

DIY Black Basketball Candy Laces

In order to make my own diy black licorice laces all I did was take regular red licorice laces and dye them black.

Place 1/2 teaspoon of water and 1-2 drops of black food coloring GEL in a plastic cup or bowl. Mix the gel into the water.

Next, place your hand in a small ziplock bag or use a food safety glove. This is an important step because it prevents your hands from being completely covered in food coloring.

Place 5-6 licorice laces in the cup (or bowl) and use your ziploc-covered-hand to coat the laces in the food coloring.

Place the colored laces on a large piece of wax paper and let dry before using on the cupcakes.

How to make basketball cupcakes
  1. Bake the cupcakes. Once baked, let them cool before frosting them.
  2. Frost the cooled cupcakes with your frosting of choice. I used Swiss meringue buttercream.
  3. Dip cupcake tops in orange sprinkles.
  4. Arrange licorice laces to resemble a real basketball. Place 3 parallel to one another, with the outer two laces curved towards the edge. Place a fourth and final lace over the top of the cupcakes, lengthwise or perpendicular to the 3 laces. Gently press the laces into the frosting and sprinkles to adhere.

Tips & Tricks
  • Place the orange sprinkles in a small bowl rather than on a plate.
  • If you can find black licorice laces, great, it will save you time from having to dye the red licorice black.
  • Pipe the frosting onto the cupcakes then use a knife or offset spatula to round off the frosting so that it’s smooth and has a slight dome look to it. Piping the frosting on ensured even amounts of frosting used on each dessert.

I really hope you love cupcakes as much as I do. Here are a few of my favorites. Be sure to check them out and make them!

Place a fourth and final lace over the top of the cupcakes, lengthwise or perpendicular to the 3 laces. Gently press the laces into the frosting and sprinkles to adhere.

  • Store cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days.

Prep time doesn’t include the time it takes to make the Swiss meringue buttercream.

Basketball Cupcakes are the perfect way to enjoy a Basketball Party!

It’s that time of year, basketball time!  It’s that time when parties are going on left and right and you are probably sitting back cheering on your favorite team, right?  We are!

For the big game, the food is always a highlight.  I know for me I focus more on that than the actual tournament.

My husband focuses on the sport, he just expects good food will follow.

That’s my job…and I’m all about that!  I can handle that, and then of course chatting with friends while eating all the delicious food is my favorite part.

How do you make Basketball Cupcakes with Skittles?

I wanted these to be very colorful, so I decided to separate the white cake mix once it was prepared and then color it.  I made the colors of the rainbow or in this case the colors of Skittles.

Then, I made cupcakes out of it.  Once the cupcakes were cooled, we simply frosted them and then used the orange Skittles to decorate the cupcakes with.

Once the Skittles were on the cupcakes, simply use black or brown icing to do a basketball design.

Once you are done you have these fun, colorful Slam Dunk Cupcakes!

These are fun for the adults and the kids, plus my son loved that there were different colors of cake too.

Do you host a party for the basketball season?  What types of treats do you serve?  Be sure to add these Basketball Cupcakes to your list!

I am certain you are going to make a Slam Dunk at your Basketball Party!

Happy Cheering!

Cake "Basketball" for real athletes

Cake "Basketball" will be the perfect dessert for a winner in sports competitions, birthday or just a good person. You can prepare such a masterpiece yourself if you know a few secrets of decorating.

How to prepare cake layers for a "sports" cake

To prepare a dessert in the form of a basketball, you must first determine the type of cake layers and the principle of their preparation. Usually, a biscuit is used to make curly desserts. The dough is quickly prepared, it needs the most affordable products, it is very easy to work with biscuit cakes.

At the beginning of work, it is necessary to decide how the "Basketball Ball" cake will look like. Cakes can be cut to form a hemisphere. You can make the body of an ordinary cake, and draw a basketball on the surface of it, making a remarkable markup of sports equipment.

Especially skillful confectioners can form a full-fledged sphere, which is supported on the dish with the help of other elements. The work consists in cutting out suitable shapes from ordinary biscuit cakes.

Initial decor options

First place the cakes correctly and then smear them with cream and impregnation. According to the possible techniques, there are 3 options:

  1. Assemble a regular round cake. It is necessary to grease the tray with a small amount of cream and lay the first cake. Then you need to soak the strip, and only then grease with cream. Do this for each element.
  2. A hemisphere is very easy to make from square or round cakes. It is necessary to make a kind of nesting doll from flour blanks. First, the largest cake is laid down, and then in descending order. Each element is impregnated and smeared with cream. Use a knife to flatten the shape.
  3. A full-fledged sphere can be made according to the same principle as a half. But in this situation, a support is needed that will hold the flour structure. It is possible to form a tablet from scraps of biscuit, where there will be a commemorative inscription or “count” of years.

In any case, the cake will be complete after the final decoration.

What materials can be used for decoration? This color palette can be created in three ways:

  1. Any version of the cream that will have a good texture and hold its shape can be dyed orange. The procedure can be carried out using natural or synthetic, but food coloring.
  2. A very popular option for decorating confectionery is mastic. You can prepare the material yourself or buy it at a candy store.
  3. Covering the surface with cream or mastic can be dispensed with. Cakes can be initially orange if you add a dye of the appropriate color to the dough. A cream for demarcation can be made brown based on chocolate.

Features of decorating the cake

You can create a Basketball ball cake with your own hands for any suitable holiday. It does not require any special products or cooking technologies. It is enough to make a high-quality finishing decoration:

  1. If a cream is used as a finish, then several options for its application can be used. You can use a variety of nozzles for a pastry syringe. A simpler option would be to apply the cream on the surface of the workpiece with a spatula or spoon. With the help of melted dark chocolate, it is easy to mark the ball.
  2. It is easier to finish with mastic. Roll out the material with a layer with a thickness of less than 1 cm. Cover the blank with a cloth and cut off the excess parts with a knife along the base of the cake. Having rolled the cinnamon-colored mastic into thin strips, make a markup.
  3. Both cream and mastic can be used at the same time. Partially seal the base with mastic. This is ideal for creating lettering. Coat the rest with cream.

In any case, the Basketball Cake will turn out beautiful and appetizing in appearance.

  1. For the chocolate biscuit, beat the eggs with the sugar for about 10 minutes. You should get a thick white mass.

  2. Sift cocoa and mix from bottom to top with a spatula.

  3. Combine flour with baking powder and add to the dough. Mix carefully.

  4. Grease a round form with a diameter of 20 cm with butter and sprinkle with flour, put a circle of parchment on the bottom. Pour the dough and bake at a temperature of 180 degrees for 30-35 minutes.

  5. We take the biscuit out of the mold and leave it on the wire rack to cool completely, and cut it into three parts.

  6. Let's make meringue. Beat egg whites with a pinch of citric acid, gradually add sugar and continue to beat until persistent peaks. Then sift the icing sugar and mix with a silicone spatula.

  7. Put the thick mass into a piping bag and pipe the meringues. It is advisable to make them in different sizes in order to fill the voids of the cake layer with small bezels. We bake at a temperature of 100 degrees for about an hour and a half.

  8. Let's do caramel cream. Beat softened butter and gradually add boiled condensed milk. Thoroughly mix everything with a mixer until a thick homogeneous mass without lumps. Don't forget to set aside 3-4 tablespoons of the cream.

  9. We will collect the cake in a round bowl, covering it with cling film. The diameter of the bowl on top should be equal to the diameter of the biscuit. Take the cake, cut out a triangle and connect the edges of the cake. We spread on the bottom of the bowl, soak with sugar syrup.

  10. Put the cream on the bottom biscuit, distribute it evenly, sprinkle with nuts. We spread the meringues and cover with a layer of cream.

  11. We cut off the second cake a little, but we do not remove the trimmings anywhere. We put it on the cream, soak it with syrup, spread the cream. Nuts, meringues and cream again. At the very end, lay out the third cake soaked in sugar syrup. Cover the cake with cling film and refrigerate for 3-4 hours or overnight.

  12. Lightly grease the cake base with cream, turn the cake plate over and take it out. The top of the cake is not perfectly flat. We mix the trimmings of the cake with the cream, put on top of the cake and align.

  13. Finished cream should be covered with mastic cream. We will make chocolate ganache. To do this, melt the chocolate with butter and apply on top of the cake. To achieve a smooth, even layer, use a piece of onboard tape or file. We work quickly as the chocolate hardens quickly.

  14. Covering the cake with mastic. Trim the edges with a sharp knife.

  15. Next, you need hexagons from white mastic, and pentagons from black mastic. We will glue the segments with water, starting from the top of the cake. We glue one black pentagon, and five white hexagons around it. We do the same with the rest of the segments.

  16. It remains to apply a kind of seam pattern with a toothpick, and our cake will be ready.

  17. In order to make the lawn on which our ball will lie, we color the coconut with green food coloring. Lubricate the cake base generously with liquid chocolate and sprinkle generously with green coconut flakes. Laying out the cake.
