If you’re living in 75% of the United States, it’s cold right now. Really cold. Coupled with the harsh winter winds is the realization you won’t be watching actual college football for quite some time.
Wow, things just got a little colder.
Five ingredients to avoid the "Trough of Disillusionment"
When I find myself grappling with this severe lack of collegiate gridiron glory, I do what any starved-for-football fan would and turn to Buckeye hype videos.
You know what I’m talking about, those clips floating around YouTube created to juice excitement for a game/season or to recap a game/season.
These videos are developed for one reason, and one reason only: to get fans’ blood pumping. Which is great because (see first paragraph).
Much like any creative medium, there is good, bad and ugly out there. To sort through the noise, I’ve compiled what I believe to be the five most important elements of a strong to very strong hype compilation. The hope is this piece will aid any potential hype videographers out there.
To prove I mean it, and because I care, I've added instructional examples.
Element #1: A Voice-over
First, good hype vids seek to incorporate a voice-over during key segments of the production. But, these vocal cameos can’t feature just anyone’s voice — so put down your digital recorder. Instead, they've got to be from a person of prominence at the university or a game announcer.
It’s critical the individual’s pipes transport fans back to a specific time and place in an instant. If the voice-over can conjure a goosebump-inducing memory, then you, the hype videographer, have succeeded.

Element #2: Music
Resist the urge
Second, the video must incorporate music. If I want to watch a highlight reel sans musical stylings cranking it to 11, I’ll turn on SportsCenter. The hype video is a different canvas altogether and it needs to be treated as such.
However, much like the voice-over, a creator can’t simply select any soundtrack. The immediate impulse is to turn to the hot track of the second. You know, the one all the kids are listening to.
Deny this feeling. The song is ablaze now, but it probably won't be in three months. Don’t date your work.
Instead, choose a classic. You can’t go wrong with guttural and dramatic orchestra music.

Element #3: Timing
Once you’ve selected the perfect accompaniment, it’s time to make it work for you. Letting the music build to a crescendo is a plus, but always (when appropriate) time the music with the action.
Got a moment where the music breaks? Sync it with a perfectly floated pass.
Got a drumbeat or horn blast? Time that baby up with a linebacker hit over the middle.

Element #4: Crowd shots
This aspect is subtle, but it makes a difference. The hype video audience was either at the game, or wishes they were. Give them a feel for what it was like.
Sustained shots of fans aren’t needed, because let’s be honest, the viewer clicked to watch some footballin’. Instead, intersperse clips of the crowd with the action. It gives the video a fluid “in-the-stadium” feel.

Element #5: Defensive Clips
Finally, don’t feature offensive prowess exclusively. Sure, there’s more game tape available of the 60-yard passes, but dig deeper.
Clips of the defense flying around and knocking blocks off lend themselves well to this particular medium.
Nothing says “hype” like a mouthpiece being forcefully ejected from an opponent's face-hole.

If these five aspects are executed correctly, the end result is a thing of beauty. In my opinion this piece leverages the aforementioned elements flawlessly.

- It is difficult to imagine a person more distant from basketball than me. But nonetheless, my favorite sports ad is the Under Armor commercial starring Stephen Curry, the NBA star.
At first I fell in love with music - the track Nobody Knows by American gospel artist T. L. Barrett just killed me. This is a great thing (it's no coincidence that DJ Khaled used it as a sample for the song Nobody)! Not for a red word, but every day, when I go to training early in the morning, this particular track plays in my headphones. Because, as Barrett sings, "this world is too cruel to live in, but until you die, you need to stay ahead."
Coming to my senses after the music, I fell in love with the slogan Make That Old. This phrase is difficult to translate - it's not exactly "make your mark" or "make history". No, this is a message to a person who is in the middle of his path - he has not yet become a monument to himself, he is not yet sitting by the fireplace, remembering the best years. His life is in full swing - yesterday he lost, today he gives all his best in training, and tomorrow he will either win or lose again. His fate is not predetermined, his future is vague, but this uncertainty is the whole point. It gives hope that tomorrow everything will change. Tomorrow will be the same throw. The very victory that will lift him to heaven.
And if nothing happens tomorrow, you don't have to despair - it's better to put on your running shoes and go to train further. In the end, the day after tomorrow, too, no one canceled.

- Imagine your favorite series almost nine months long. The 2011/2012 season in the English Premier League was like this for me. That season we saw 8-2 and 1-6 at Old Trafford, a struggle for survival that brought tears to even the eyes of viewers in front of the TV screen, and the famous goal of Sergio Aguero - it is simply impossible to forget.
This short video from the BBC, of course, does not convey all the emotions experienced at that time, but allows you to get a little closer to them and experience frenzied nostalgia. At such moments, once again you understand: football is more than a game.

- My friends who work in the field of advertising and promo really praise this video for its quality - it's really well done, one montage is worth it. But that's not the only reason I like him. This ad perfectly illustrates one of the important plots of the life of modern popular culture and modern fashion, namely the regular appeal to the aesthetics of marginal communities for the aura of "authenticity" inherent in them, which is so desired by many categories of modern consumers. This effect is enhanced by the perfectly chosen soundtrack - a cover version of Frank Sinatra's famous song My Way. There are working-class suburbs, and guys who look like football fans, and hooligans with bats, and African-American culture of urban ghettos, and rappers who sing in every way about the desire to "do it your way." It seems that the message is spoken practically “on the forehead”, but it is done so beautifully and talentedly that it still fascinates.
Subculture fashion is a complex topic, such things always cause mixed, contradictory reactions. In recent years, since Paris and other fashion capitals of the world have become interested in domestic gopniks, we have a unique opportunity to experience this first hand. Some like it, others are totally against it. The same applies to the use of such images in advertising. For example, in New York in the 1980s, there was even a scandal about this: one of the state's top officials demanded that a subway advertisement for sports shoes be removed, which depicted dark-skinned young people with a large tape recorder and a basketball in a graffiti-painted car. In his opinion, she contributed to the spread of negative racial stereotypes, and it cannot be said that he is completely wrong. Unfortunately, I don't know how that story ended.
