STEAM@Home: Make Your Own Basketball Hoop!

No application or registration needed.

Location

  • Only virtual (online or over the phone).

Find an area where you can lay out materials and do some hands-on construction.

Additional information

Materials:

  • A wire hanger. It cannot be a partially metal hanger made substantially of wood or plastic.
  • A large, flat piece of cardboard.
  • The tape of your choosing. Masking tape may be the easiest to work with; duct tape would certainly make the hoop durable.
  • Markers or paint.
  • Scissors.
  • String (optional).

Instructions:

  1. Bend the wire hanger into a circle. You do not even have to dismantle the hanger, but just reshape it into a hoop.
  2. Bend the hook of the hanger so that it is at a 90 degree angle with the hoop. Do not cut away the hook, as it still can be of some use.
  3. Cut the cardboard to the size and shape of your liking. Standard high school, college, and NBA backboards are rectangular, if you are looking to replicate that appearance. Try to make sure the relative scale of the hoop and backboard seem reasonable. For comparative purposes, an NBA backboard is 6 feet wide, while the basket opening is 18 inches (1.5 feet). That means the basket width is 1/4 (or 25%) as wide.
  4. Decorate the hoop and backboard to your liking. Traditional hoops are painted red, but you can certainly customize it to fit whatever you desire. The backboard of most high schools, colleges, and all NBA franchises are now made of transparent glass; as there is no transparent cardboard, you can really be as creative as you want.
  5. Tape the hoop to the backboard. You can attach the hook (which you bent up earlier) to lower back side of the backboard. Make sure the rim is as close to the backboard as possible.
  6. Attach a net to the basketball rim (optional). You can make make a net out of string, or even out of twisted tape.
  7. Hang the completed basket to a wall or door. Masking tape will work well for this purpose, as it will not leave a sticky mess behind like duct tape would. There are two different taping methods you can employ.

Tips for Supporting Your Children's Learning

Get your child actively involved in their own learning and having their questions drive the learning. Let them observe and figure out, and try to hold back from answering questions for them. Instead, try to ask: What do we know? What else can we find out? How might we figure that out? Don't be afraid to ask your child questions.  Also, don't be afraid to say "I don't know--let's find out together!" as a way to respond to their questions.   Here's an article to help you support this kind of learning:  Of the Value of Saying I Don’t Know

How to Build a Super DIY Wood Basketball Hoop in Hours!

Our DIY Reclaimed Wood basketball Hoop was incredibly easy to make & only took a few hours to build for just the cost of a basketball rim. Sharing all of our tips & tricks for how to make an awesome DIY wood basketball hoop with pictures. It’s a hit with our kids for those home bound rainy days when they are stuck indoors!

DIY Reclaimed Wood Basketball Hoop

*this post contains affiliate links for more information check out our disclosure page here*

Hands down our family’s favorite sport is basketball.

With the kids home this Spring & so many rainy days to come we decided to make an indoor DIY wood Basketball Hoop for our new home gym/ office.

With most of the furniture out of the room, thanks to our new bookcase turned entertainment center (see that here) we have plenty of room for the kids to let out ALL this extra energy they have!!!

Although our basement ceilings are low (7 feet), we decided it would still be fun to make the kids a DIY reclaimed wood basketball hoop since they love playing basketball together & can’t play outside when the weather is bad.

Supplies Needed for a DIY Wood Basketball Hoop

Our DIY Basketball Hoop Backboard Dimensions are 27″ inches high & 44″ wide.

  • Reclaimed Wood for Basketball Wood Backboard
  • Saw to Cut the Wood to Size
  • Basketball Hoop (we purchased this one Here)
  • Spray Paint
  • Scrap Wood to Secure the Wood Basketball Backboard to the Wall
  • Screws & Screwdriver

How to Build/ Make a DIY Wood Basketball Hoop in 4 Steps…

Step ONE – Creating the Wood Backboard for the DIY Basketball Hoop

Jason had some leftover wood from our former dining room church pew (see that here) that there had been some controversy over.

Long story short, I wanted to keep the church pew & Jason wanted to build benches for our dining room instead.

Jason won & he built 2 benches to replace the pew.

However, I do have to admit that I love the character the old reclaimed wood from our former church pew gives to both the DIY wood basketball hoop backboard as well as our bookcase/ entertainment center.

Our custom DIY wood basketball hoop backboard is a bit smaller than regulation size so we could fit it in our room. Jason cut the reclaimed wood boards for the backboard to be 27 inches high and 44 inches long.

Once the pew boards were cut to the same length Jason attached some spared oak boards to the attach to span any board seams and hold the boards together.

Step TWO – Painting the White Square on the Wood Backboard

Once the DIY wood basketball hoop backboard was together Jason painted on the white square with the same spray paint we used for Audrey’s nightstand & desk. (see those makeovers here)

Printer paper & masking tape did a great job creating the perfect square for our wood basketball hoop with spray paint.

Step THREE – Securing the Basketball Hoop Wood Backboard to the Wall

To secure something heavy to a wall a good method is to cut 2 boards at a 45 degree angle the length of it.

You can then attach one board to wall securely finding the studs to screw into such that it will receive the similar board attached to the backboard and draw it into the wall.

For the DIY wood basketball backboard Jason doubled this up and did 2 boards on the wall and 2 boards on the back of the backboard.

Measure carefully to space out the angled boards appropriately that are attached to the wall and the angled boards attached to the back of the wood basketball hoop backboard.

Once these are attached you should just be able to lift the backboard up to the wall and set it in place.

Jason found that the backboard rattled when a ball bounced against it more than he liked so he also put 2 screws through the front of the wooden backboard to the wood he had already screwed into the wall.

As you noticed from the picture of the back of the backboard Jason finished off the sides with some wood from the pew to give it a nice finished look and hide the support boards on the back of the wood basketball hoop backboard.

Step FOUR – Attaching the Hoop to our DIY Wood Basketball Hoop Backboard

We added this basketball hoop to the wood baseboard.

It took the kids no time to start putting our DIY Reclaimed Wood Basketball Hoop to use.

Our family is not known for our height & everyone was excited to FINALLY be able to dunk. 🙂

8 DIY Desks to Try

How to equip a basketball court in the country or in the yard

Basketball develops the child's physical abilities - coordination, endurance, develops strong-willed qualities, concentration, attentiveness and teaches non-standard thinking. Professionals recommend sending a child to the basketball section from the age of 8-9, but outside the city or in the yard, you can “chase the ball” from an early age.

I myself equipped a basketball court in my country house and now I am ready to share the secrets of its arrangement. I'll tell you what you need to do, how to choose the right equipment and how to care for it.

Prepare basketball court surface

To create a basketball court in accordance with all the rules, you need to select a flat horizontal surface for it and fill it with concrete. After that, I recommend applying a special rubber coating, like on playgrounds in the yard. There is a more expensive coating option - from rubber.

The coating will provide cushioning - the ball will bounce well.

If it is not possible to organize a special platform, you can simply place a rack or hanging basket on a dirt surface. In this case, the ball bounce will not be so strong. An important requirement for safety: the surface must be flat, without holes and bumps.

The dimensions of the site depend on the features of your yard or plot in the country. A full-fledged basketball court has dimensions of 28 × 15 meters. However, not everyone has the opportunity to build such a site in the country.

It is necessary to take into account the technical features of the game. The three-point line in basketball is 6.75 meters from the hoop. Therefore, it is necessary that the size of the site be at least 10 × 13 meters. If you are not going to train three-point shots, a 5 × 5 meter court will do.

Mark out

The second step is to mark up. It is important to use paints of contrasting colors. It is better to buy paints with a high content of rubber or polymer.

If you are equipping a basketball court for children, make the markings bright so that they cheer you up and attract attention. For the game of teenagers and adults, it is better to immediately apply technically correct markings.

Place a small fence or protective net on the site. Thanks to them, you do not have to constantly run after the ball to the other end of the site.

Buy stand or backboard

It is difficult to answer the question of what is better - a basketball stand or a backboard. It all depends on taste, tasks and opportunities. Each of these types of equipment has its pros and cons.

There are two types of racks: mobile and static. The static one is mounted in the ground.

The base of the mobile rack is filled with sand or water - for stability. The main advantage of a mobile rack is that it can be moved from place to place. This is convenient when there is no dedicated basketball court or if you are going to play other games in this area, such as tennis or football.

The main requirement for racks is their stability. It will be much more comfortable and safer to play if you are sure that the stance will withstand a blow of any force.

Pay attention to the materials from which the racks are made. A static rack will be outdoors throughout the year, which means it must be made of reliable materials. It is better to buy racks from well-known manufacturers. So, the American companies Spalding or Royal Fitness guarantee high quality, durability and safety.

Basketball backboards can be made in the country with your own hands from a board, chipboard or plywood remnants. If this option does not suit you, you can purchase semi-professional or professional options in stores.

There are four types of materials from which the shield surface is made: composite, polycarbonate, acrylic and tempered glass. The first one is the cheapest. It is intended for entry-level players. Now manufacturers offer a large selection of colors. A carbonate backboard will provide a good bounce of the ball. An acrylic shield is bought to hold competitions or intense games.

The mobile stand can be moved, so it is suitable for a playground in the country and for those who want to play other games besides basketball

Shields and racks made of tempered glass look solid. They will be appreciated by experienced basketball players

Pay attention to rings

You can buy cheap rings, but I don't recommend doing that. In a year they will deteriorate and you will have to buy new ones. Basketball hoops from Spalding and Royal Fitness are made from quality metal that won't rust in the rain.

The ring must have a springy structure - no rigid attachment to the shield.

According to NBA rules, the ring must be fixed at a distance of about three meters from the ground. For a game with the participation of younger students, it can be hung lower so that it is not very easy to hit it, but at the same time it is quite possible.

Choose rings made from high quality metal to last for many years. For a game involving adults and teenagers, metal chain rings are suitable. They are distinguished by durability and strength.

Know what types of basketballs exist

Success in the game depends on the basketball.

They are divided by size. Size 7 is for men, 5 for women. Even smaller balls are bought for children. The size 6 ball is suitable for street ball or street basketball where the game is played on half the field.

You also need to take into account where you will play the ball: on the street or in the hall. The street ball has a stronger bounce, it is harder and more wear-resistant, but the indoor ball is more convenient to hold in your hands.

It is important to pay attention to the composition of the basketball. Well-known companies use complex polymer compositions for its production. The more expensive the ball, the more complex the polymer composition. The quality of the material determines how comfortable it will be for the players to hold the ball, what kind of rebound it has from the floor and from the bow of the ring.

Another important nuance: do not forget to purchase a pump with any needle.

If you want the ball to have good grip and bounce well, you need to choose polymer models from world famous manufacturers

Proper care

Professional athletes are ready to play in any weather, but amateurs are better off not following their example. If you don't properly store, use and care for your basketball arsenal, its lifespan will be shortened. Humidity will ruin the ball and all equipment, so you can’t leave them outside during rain and snow.

Balls should be stored only in a dry and ventilated room at a temperature of 10 to 20 °C.

Before winter storage, water must be poured out of the base of the mobile rack, and then removed from the street. If you don't feel like doing this every time, fill the rack with sand. Then it will not need to be constantly moved. Basketball stands from Royal Fitness can be left outside in the winter.

Points to remember when setting up a basketball court

  1. The area needs to be determined. The classic version - 28 × 15 meters - is not suitable for everyone. For a dacha, a 5 × 5 meter area will be enough if you want to train three-point shots.
  2. Don't forget the markup. It should be in a contrasting color. Bright colors will interest children and cheer them up.
  3. It is necessary to install a protective net so as not to constantly run after the ball to the other end of the area.
  4. If the shield is stable, then it is safe. A mobile stand from a well-known manufacturer will also not let you down, and it can be moved around the site.
  5. When choosing a basketball, you need to focus on the players. For games involving children and adults, balls of different sizes are needed.
  6. If you want a basketball ring that doesn't rot in a year and you don't have to spend money on buying a new one, choose rings from well-known manufacturers made of high quality metal.
  7. Don't forget about care. Do not leave equipment and inventory on the street. Racks need to be removed to the house for the winter.

How to do it yourself at the dacha

Even when pouring the foundation of the future site, you need to decide on the location of the inventory and prepare places for it in advance. Usually, for convenience, a rack with a ring is placed at the edge of the area, providing a minimum distance of 3 meters around it, this will be enough for a full throw into the basket. A basketball field with two baskets will occupy an area of 20 × 35 m.

Ring, shield, net

You can make a complete farm with a ring with your own hands. The frame of the shield is made of metal corners, which are welded together according to the required dimensions. Then the necessary boards are selected to create a wall. When they are attached, gaps may remain, they will not interfere with the game. The main thing is that the wooden surface is even. It is painted in any color of your choice, and also decorated with all sorts of patterns, you can connect children to this work, they will surely amaze you with their creativity and will be happy to take part themselves.

You may also be interested in children's football goals for summer cottages.

Creating a ring will require a rope, thick wire and any conical device - a template for making a diametrical measurement. The wire is wound around it with a small margin at the ends. For them, the resulting ring will be attached to the shield. Its diameter should be slightly larger than that of a basketball.

Then start making the mesh. The prepared rope is cut into 20 equal segments, taking into account the fact that their length should be three times the estimated height of the basket. The resulting pieces of rope are attached to the ring at regular intervals, and then tied together strictly in the middle so that the remaining ends are equal. And then they get tied up again. This action continues until the ends of the ropes remain very short.

Installation of a basketball stand for a child

The stand itself can be made from a pipe or angles, having previously welded them. If you have small children, then it is worth making several holes for fasteners at different levels and initially hang the shield on the lowest one. To make it convenient and interesting for kids to play with you. And as they grow up, the shield can be moved.

Hoop design features

A basketball hoop is one of the main attributes of the game. It is in him that every basketball player wants to hit the ball.

It is a rim to which the mesh is attached, and this structure is subsequently installed on the board with a certain height. There are several types of basketball hoops.

An inexpensive option would be regular hard. These are usually made of wear-resistant materials (for example, durable steel).

They can be seen in family playgrounds, outdoor basketball courts, school and university halls. But in professional tournaments, a fixed one is used, which is a rigid structure that can cushion (spring).

Attention! Depreciation is an important feature. Since athletes like to perform all sorts of tricks in indoor and outdoor tournaments, including hanging on it, the fixed ring with shock absorption fully justifies its cost

How high from the floor is the basket in basketball: standards

Basketball hoop standards are regulated FIBA rules, because it is under the auspices of this federation that all international competitions are held, including the World Basketball Championship.

Photo 1. Hard steel basketball hoop and backboard set up on a street court.

Here are some of the federation's requirements for a professional competition ring:

  • Made from solid steel. Inner diameter 45–45.9 cm.
  • Rod thickness 16–20 mm.
  • Color orange.
  • Has 12 mesh attachment holes.
  • Smooth, safe, free from chips, dents or other defects.
  • The gap between the fastening device and the ring is no more than 8 mm (so that the fingers of the athletes cannot get there).
  • Any force transferred to the ring and basket must not be completely transferred to the backboard (this is dangerous for players who can hang on the rim and tip the whole structure on themselves).
  • The top edge is located above the level of the platform at a height of 305 cm. A difference in values of 6 mm maximum is allowed. The ring is located clearly in the middle of the shield at the same distance from its vertical edges.
  • If the ring has the property of damping, then it must be tested for strength before it enters service.

Help! It should not come off under the influence of a static load of 82-105 kg.

How far is the backboard for the game?

The parameters of the basketball backboard on which the basket is attached are also subject to certain requirements.

It is made from either solid tempered glass or hardwood. It is a rectangle with dimensions of 1.8 x 1.05 m, at least 3 cm thick.

According to the FIBA regulations, the discrepancy in the length of the backboard is a maximum of 30 mm, in width - 20 mm. It has markings on it.

If the material is transparent glass, then the markings are applied with white paint, in other cases - black. Line width - 50 mm. The boundaries of the shield are highlighted with a bounding line that forms a rectangle.

The upper edge of the base of the rectangle is on the same level with the ring and 15 - 15.2 cm above the lower edge of the shield.

The shield is mounted on a support in such a way that its lower edge is located at a distance of 2.75–2.9meters above the level of the playing field from the floor.

Important! Professional basketball competitions are held mainly on specially equipped indoor grounds. The ceiling height there is from 7 m, in some - from 12 m.

For amateur competitions and for school games, it is not necessary to strictly comply with these requirements, since it is not always possible to choose a hall with an appropriate ceiling height

Therefore, it doesn't matter how far the hoop is.

DIY basketball backboard with a hoop

Home-made basketball hoops are installed in dachas or hung in the yard near the house. In the summer, you can throw the ball with pleasure, feeling like Michael Jordan for a moment. This game is available to everyone: both children and adults. The benefits of such a seemingly simple exercise are incredible!

Have you set out to make your own basketball hoop and don't know where to start? Further, we will talk about this.

To make your own basketball hoop, you need thick wire and rope. Instead of a wire, an old unnecessary sports hoop is suitable, which is cut, shortened and connected again. Do not forget to leave a "sprout" for attaching to the shield.

In order to make a thick wire basketball hoop, you will need to use some tricks. To obtain an even circle, a cylindrical fixture can be used as a template on which the wire is wound. But, before cutting off the wire, do not forget about the "sprout" for attaching to the wall.

The diameter of the metal blank for the hoop is slightly larger than the diameter of a basketball. Next, the pre-prepared rope is cut into 20–22 identical segments. The length of each is 2.5–3 times the planned length of the net hanging.

These segments are attached to the metal ring at regular intervals. The ropes are tied in the middle, and the two ends of equal length are left free. Then the two ends of the nearby ropes are tied in turn, and so on along the entire circumference of the ring. It turns out the first level of the grid. The ropes of the next level are tied in the same way, etc.

When making a basketball hoop for the home, the bottom of the net can be tied up to allow the ball hitting the net to stay inside. Thus, the ball does not accidentally bounce to the side.

Now we know how to make our own basketball hoop. But it is necessary to answer the question, which is better - a home-made or a quality product bought in a store?

Making your own parts is fun. To do this, you only need free time, the necessary materials and a third-class welder. If you do not have this, then it is better to purchase a basketball hoop with a backboard from trusted manufacturers.

In order to make a basketball backboard with fastening, you will need six meters of a profile pipe measuring 2x2 cm, 8.5 m of a profile pipe 2x4 cm, a backboard made of laminated moisture-resistant plywood, a basketball hoop, six anchor bolts for attaching to the wall. The design is assembled from three parts for easy wall mounting.

The required part is cut off from the shield.

Metal structures are welded and the prepared ABC is applied to them.

The shield is drawn, glued with adhesive tape, and lines 5 cm wide are applied to it.

Attach the shield to the frame.

Ring attachment

The shield ring must be attached strictly perpendicular to the base of the platform and must not move arbitrarily. One or two shields with rings can be placed on the court, depending on which games they are purchased for. It should also be taken into account that if you plan to buy two shields for one site, then one about the other in size should not differ by more than 5%.

The distance between the post and the backboard is also important and depends on playing experience. Optimum adjustable overhang is between 60 and 90 cm

In addition, for those who plan to develop in the game, a pole pad and shield edge protection are needed. During a more aggressive game of basketball, a stance pad is needed to prevent injury.

Ground and wall rings require special requirements. These can be deep holes for anchor kits, ladders, or a few people to stabilize the hoop while it is leveling.

Do-it-yourself basketball hoop: dimensions

Playgrounds for training athletes and competitions are equipped by the relevant organizations according to existing standards. To be able to practice at home, you can purchase a separate board with a basket and hang it in a suitable place or install a ready-made and fully equipped rack. But you can do everything yourself.

If there are plans to engage in this sport in the future, then when making the backboard it is desirable to withstand the standard size of a basketball hoop. It will be problematic to bend and weld a steel bar with a diameter of 16 mm without suitable equipment and locksmith skills. But you can adapt an old aluminum hoop for rotation for these purposes. It is cut, bent to the desired diameter and secured with an outer insert.

The shield can be cut from a piece of chipboard, fiberboard of a suitable size or knocked down from boards. It is best to attach the basket to it on the bracket. It can be picked up at a hardware store. It is worth thinking about additional spacers on the sides of the ring, since fixing at one point is not enough and upon contact with the ball, the basket will inevitably sag more and more.

You can make a net using 24 pieces of rope. Their length is chosen 2-2.5 times longer than the diameter of the ring. The edges are knitted to the hoop through equal segments. Then the ropes are tied in pairs in the middle. In the next step, the process is repeated with free edges. And so again. The result is a tapered mesh. The inventory, of course, will be far from standards and perfection, but it should be enough for training at home with the ball.

A new game for the students: he challenged the students to compete in marksmanship by throwing a ball, and to make the task more difficult and to interest young people, he attached fruit baskets to the balconies of the sports hall. It was necessary to get into the baskets that hung directly above the students.

In team competitions, the balls were thrown into the baskets not only by the players, but also by the fans who were on the balconies. In order for the balls flying into the opponent's basket not to fly further than the target, Disames Naismith installed shields behind the baskets.

sports competitions

Important nuances

Each game is regulated by international rules, which also apply to equipment parameters

  • basketball backboard dimensions - height 1.05 m, width 1.8 m;
  • distance between ring and shield - 15 cm;
  • size of the basketball field - 28 × 15 m;
  • The height of the basketball hoop is also standard - 3. 05 m from the floor.

Basketball stand is made of high-quality steel or heavy-duty tempered glass. The second option is the most used among sports equipment manufacturers. Sometimes shields are made from less quality materials - plastic, fiberglass. Such products do not have a long service life, they are intended for fans who play basketball as a hobby.

The shield must be firmly attached to the supporting base strictly perpendicular to the floor plane. The design should not move under any external influence: throw, accidental contact. In order to avoid injury, it is upholstered with soft material.

The court can hold 1 or 2 boards depending on the size of the area and the type of game. For basketball in the classical sense, the size of the backboard and hoop remains virtually unchanged. They are installed at right angles parallel to the front lines at a distance of up to 120 cm. During the installation process, the structures comply with all technical safety requirements.

According to the accepted rules, the size of the backboard for fixing the basketball hoop, located on the same court, should not differ from another by more than 5%. That is why you should order and install sports equipment at the same time. Before starting the game, it is necessary to check the reliability of fixing all the details.

When basketball and the first backboard with hoop appeared

Basketball's predecessor is considered to be the 19th century children's game "duck on the rock", familiar to the Canadian basketball inventor James Naismith. The principle of the game was to hit a small stone on top of a large one.

The concept of basketball was finally formed when D. Naismith moved to the US and became a physical education teacher at the Youth Christian Organization College (YMCA) in Springfield, Massachusetts. Already teaching physical education and as a college professor, he faced the challenge of creating a winter game between baseball and football. Naismith, given the weather conditions this time of year in Massachusetts, decided that this game should be played indoors.

Naismith's goal was to create an outdoor game for the students of the Christian Workers' School that required more than just strength and dexterity. It was supposed to develop coordination of movements in teenagers and at the same time be interesting.

So, in the winter of 1891, under the leadership of Naismith, the first basketball baskets were installed in the college gym. Baskets from under the fruit, fixed on both sides of the hall on the balconies, which encircled the room around the perimeter, acted as basketball hoops. Such baskets were fastened at a height of 3.05 m, it was this indicator that became the international standard, which is observed to this day.

The task of the players was to throw the ball (at that time they used football) into the basket. The first basketball match was held in the same hall on December 21, 1891. According to the conditions of the game proposed by Naismith, each team had 9 people, which exactly coincided with the number of students in the group.

The news of the new game quickly spread throughout America, and Naismith was asked to send the rules. On February 12, 1892, after learning the rules and mastering the basics of technology, the students of Springfield College played the first "official" match in the history of basketball, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

This meeting turned out to be so successful, and the rumor about a new type of competition spread so quickly that soon the two Springfield teams began to hold exhibition competitions, which were already attended by hundreds of spectators. The initiative was picked up by students from other educational institutions, and the following year, the Northeast of America was swept by a real basketball fever.

The rules of basketball that Naismith wrote himself as a college instructor at 1891 year, was a list of 13 points, which eventually formed the basis of modern international rules, which hardly fit on 200 pages. In 1893, instead of baskets, they put iron rings with a grid, two years later they added shields, and two years later the team was reduced to 5 people.

Basketball hoop: dimensions, diameter

Back in 1893, when thoughtful rules of the game were proposed, it was decided to standardize the inventory according to uniform standards. Then the rings began to be made of metal, equipped with a mesh, securely and securely fastened to the shield and supporting structures at a certain height from the site. What are these standards?

Today, the playing field must have dimensions of 28×15 m. The height of the enclosed space (ceiling) is at least 7 meters. The shield (lower edge) is fixed at a height of 290 cm from the floor. It has dimensions of 180x105 cm. The basket (a metal ring with a mesh) is attached to the shield at a height of 305 cm (respectively, 15 cm above the lower edge of the shield). The diameter of the ring should be within 45-45.7 cm. For its manufacture, a steel bar 16-20 mm in diameter is used.

The game ball differs in circumference and weight and is respectively: for men - 74.9-78 cm, 567-650 g, and for women - 72. 4-73.7 cm, 510-567 g. FIBA controls and approves playground equipment and equipment. Balls for official competitions are made of leather. Air pressure should ensure that the ball bounces to a height of 1.2-1.4 m after it falls from a height of 1.8 m. The spectators on the balconies, where the baskets hung, prevented the ball from getting inside. So the shields were born. Initially, they served as protection from the fans, but already the first games showed that it was even more interesting that way. The ball could hit the ring after a successful rebound from the shield. This added spice to the game and made it possible for teams to change tactics.

The size and height of the basketball hoop did not change significantly over time. In 1893, wicker fruit baskets were no longer used in tournaments. To replace them, rings made of a metal rod were invented. A net was attached to it so that there would be no disputes about a successful hit. With it, it was better to see when the ball hit the target. In 1894, unified rules for basketball were proposed. The game was liked and quickly spread to Japan and China, South America and Europe. Basketball first appeared in Russia at 1906 year. In the twenties of the last century, it began to be introduced as a discipline in military and sports schools.

Requirements for the shield

The following standards must be observed:

  1. Size 1.8 x 1.05 m.
  2. Non-reflective surface.
  3. Clear markings, at least 50 mm wide.
  4. Good fixation on the support.

In general, when choosing a basketball backboard, it is necessary to focus on the needs of the team or individual athletes.

It all depends on what games this backboard will be used for: on the street playground or for family entertainment in the local area, for mini-basketball or professional tournaments for adult teams.

Attention! The main thing to consider is the strength of the structure, because some players hang on the ring during the throw. Poorly installed support or incorrectly fixed backboard and basket can cause serious harm to the health of a basketball player

Basketball Court Equipment

There are many different designs of hoops on the market today, but they are generally divided into three types: portable, wall-mounted, and stationary, installed on the ground. In general, ground hoops are the highest quality and most expensive, while wall hoops and portable hoops occupy the budget level. They also require different levels of space, with wall mounting requiring the least, and ground mounting requiring the most space to fit properly.

Portable basketball hoop

A container at the bottom of the stand filled with water, sand, or other substance stabilizes the basketball hoop, which can be easily moved after installation. Most portable hoops are height adjustable, and the best ones have tempered glass backs. Due to the method of stabilization, portable hoops can be unsafe, with the risk of falling on players if the weight at the base is reduced for any reason. Without the proper weight, they absorb the impact of a basketball and thus show little bounce. A great option if there is no space on the site. After the game, when there is no need for a ring, you can fold the basketball stand in any convenient place.

Wall hoop

Wall hoops are attached to a wall or roof, often in the yard, and have adjustment mechanisms to give the hoop the correct height. They are great for oddly shaped courts because the player gets an extra overhang when the hoop is screwed straight into the wall. Thanks to the stabilization method, they are almost as rigid as hoops in the ground. However, wall rings generally do not provide the same range of height adjustment as ground or portable ones. In this case, the correct placement of the mount on the wall plays a role, in which the maximum will be minimally limited.

Fixed ground

Fixed poles typically command the highest price-performance levels of hoops. Adjustable reach allows them to adjust to any configuration of your sports ground, but they also require the most space.
