Daily Fantasy Basketball 101: Tips and Strategies
Derek Farnsworth (Notorious)
Created 8 years ago, Last Updated 6 years ago
Whether you are new to the daily fantasy sports world or whether you have been around for ages, it never hurts to sharpen your skills.
Daily fantasy basketball is a completely different animal than any other sport and should be treated as such. Here are the best tips that I can give you Grinders for NBA DFS.
Get to Know Your Site’s Scoring
First and foremost, you need to learn everything you can about the site that you are playing on. That means studying the scoring system, roster construction, player flexibility, and whether it has the late swap feature. In terms of scoring, all sites have subtle differences and being able to apply them in lineup creation can help you set yourself apart from the competition.
Whether you play on one site or on multiple sites, you need to know the scoring so that you can apply it when creating your lineups. Here’s a quick look at both DraftKings and FanDuel scoring for NBA:
Notes
— Simple, straightforward scoring system
— No negatives for missed shots
— Turnovers negate 1 fantasy point each
— No milestone bonuses
Notes
— No negatives for missed shots
— Turnovers negate -0.5 fantasy points each
— 3-point made bonus
— Milestone bonuses for double-doubles and triple-doubles
Create a Value System
When I first started playing daily fantasy sports, creating a system for value really helped me simplify the lineup creation process. It allows you to give each player a baseline of how many fantasy points they need to score in order for them to pay off their salary. The first step is to create a fantasy point goal that is realistic and high enough to cash on most nights. This goal will vary by league type, as you’ll need a much highers score to cash in GPPs than you will in cash games.
Once you determine your fantasy point goal, simply take the total and divide by the total salary cap of the site that you are playing on. For instance, if you determine that 250 points is your goal on DraftKings, divide that by $50,000 (total available salary). This tells you that you need roughly 5 FPs per $1,000 of salary in order to reach your goal. When you hear experts say that a player should reach 5x their salary, this is what they are talking about. Using a simple value system can be extremely useful, as it will help you spot players that are over or under-priced. Keep in mind that you generally need more than 5x salary from your cheaper players and less than the 5x salary from superstar players.
Injuries / Opportunity
If you have never played daily fantasy basketball before, you will quickly learn that in the NBA, opportunity is everything. Minutes directly lead to opportunity and opportunity leads directly to production. Due to this, injuries impact daily fantasy basketball more than in any other fantasy sport. When a player is injured, his minutes and his production are both going to get picked up by his backup and the rest of his teammates. One of the best strategies in daily fantasy basketball is taking advantage of backups that see a boost in production due to injuries. You don’t want to be the one player that doesn’t have the extremely cheap backup player making a spot start.
In order to keep up with the numerous injuries around the league, you should constantly monitor player updates throughout the day. My advice is to open up a separate tab in your browser that has Rotoworld’s NBA Player News. Throughout the day, read each and every player update so that you are on top of all of the NBA news when it’s time to create your lineups. Once it gets closer to tip-off, this is where Twitter takes over as the best tool for injury updates. The best follows on Twitter are the team’s beat writers as well as reputable fantasy sources. Don’t trust random sources though! Anyone else remember the fake update last year?
Pace of Play
Pace of play is another key component of daily fantasy basketball, and once again it relates to opportunity. Pace of play measures the number of possessions that each team averages per game. The faster the pace of play, the more possessions a team has. The more possessions a team has, the more opportunities there are for the players on that team to score fantasy points.
There are two ways to predict the pace of play in the NBA, and they are both fairly simple. You can average the two team’s possessions per game or you can simply look at the point totals in the Vegas lines.
Defense vs. Position Rankings (DvP)
NBA Defense vs. Position rankings are another great tool to use in the NBA. These rankings measure how many fantasy points each team gives up to each position on the floor relative to the rest of the league. You will quickly see popular trends in daily fantasy basketball, such as targeting opposing PGs against the Sixers, targeting big men against the Nuggets, or whatever it may be. The DvP rankings help you spot these favorable matchups each night.
When looking at the rankings, it’s typically best to look two sets. Looking at both season-long DvP rankings as well as recent DvP rankings will help you spot any new trends in how teams are defending each position.
Targeting Hot / Cold Streaks
Basketball is one of the “streakiest” sports around. In MLB, players can go on hot streaks, but momentum typically only goes as far as the next starting pitcher that a player faces. In the NFL, there are too many factors that go into the plays each week to make a hot streak worth any value.
But in the NBA, momentum plays a huge role for both teams and for individual players. When a player has confidence in his game, he’s likely going to be more aggressive on both ends of the floor. Targeting players on hot streaks is a good strategy as long as you are not overpaying for that recent production. Likewise, it can also be a good strategy to target players that have had a cold streak whose salaries are extremely depressed.
Using the “Experts”
As the industry grows, so does the amount of coverage for daily fantasy sports. There are a ton of “experts” out there that give out their opinion on the games each and every day. With so much information out there, it’s nearly impossible to compile it all into a single optimal lineup. My advice is to read or listen to as much advice as you can and to look for common plays. The more experts that agree on a player or a matchup, the better.
One of the best tools on RotoGrinders is the NBA Consensus Picks from the experts. You can quickly see each expert’s favorite plays at each position based on the salaries for each site.
Be Ready for the Madness
After you’ve spent hours monitoring injuries, breaking down matchups, and studying player salaries, be ready to throw it all out the window in the last 15 minutes before lineups lock. There are so many last minute scratches in the NBA that you have to constantly be ready to change your lineups.
Whether you play as a hobby or for a living, you need to carve out the last 15-30 minutes before lineups lock and devote them solely to DFS because they are the most important 15-30 minutes of the day.

ESPN Fantasy Basketball 101 - How to play
Sep 26, 2022
You love basketball. You follow the NBA, root for your favorite team and watched in amazement as Stephen Curry led the Golden State Warriors to another championship.
And you still haven't played fantasy basketball?!
If that sounds a lot like you, this is the perfect season to give it a try -- there is just so much exciting stuff happening around the league. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic can do everything on the court. Luka Doncic and Trae Young have moved into the MVP discussion. Zion Williamson is coming back from a missed season. And superstars LeBron James and Kevin Durant continue to put their teams on their backs like they did 10 years ago.
There has never been a better time to jump right into the fantasy game.
Create or join an ESPN Fantasy Basketball league today and draft your league any time before the first game tips off every Monday. Your league starts fresh with 0-0 records for the new matchup period.

Imagine having Curry on your team when he gets on a roll from 3-point land and carries you to victory. Or what it feels like to have LaMelo Ball on your squad when he stuffs the stat sheet in his third NBA season.
These are the moments you remember as a fantasy manager!
In fact, many of those who've played fantasy basketball over the years can recall specific games that certain players had for them. An epic scoring night by James Harden or Damian Lillard, or maybe a timely triple-double by Russell Westbrook.
So fun. So, so fun!
If you're not an expert, don't worry -- we have everything you need to know about how to enter a league and draft a winning team. Even if you're a total beginner, you will still have the tools to experience the joy of fantasy basketball like millions do every year.
Make the league your own
Every fantasy basketball league is different. While there are basic rules and settings that apply across the board (you will learn about those below), each league takes on its own identity based on settings like roster size, injury spots, stat categories and other specifics.
We encourage you to join or start a league that fits what you're looking for. If you want to be more casual and set your lineups once a week, find a league that uses weekly lineup changes. If you're a little bit more diehard with all this and want to be able to add and drop players and craft new lineups on a daily basis, that's the type of league you should enter.
The bottom line is to do what's fun for you. Find a league that keeps you tuning in to watch your players every night.
With that in mind, we've put together ESPN Fantasy Basketball 101 to give you an overview of how to get started, how to prepare for your draft and how to play during the season.
Now it's time for you to sign up and join the fun!

League settings
If you created your own league, you'll need to make sure all of your league's rules and settings -- including roster size, scoring, regular-season schedules and playoff schedules -- are to your liking. We have all of the details of how to do that right here. Note: This season
You've signed up, now what?
Check out your league and team pages
It's time to learn more about your league and team pages, so you know where everything is. We've got you covered with a detailed tour right here.
Know your rules
This might seem incredibly basic, but even veteran fantasy basketball players often assume they know their league rules even when they don't. The result of overlooking a rule can be costly, so be sure you know the rules before your draft.
Go to your fantasy basketball league page, click on League, then Settings. Here, you'll be able to find all the rules that are in place for your league this season. This includes roster construction, scoring, schedule, playoff structure and more.
Take the time to carefully go over every section. To make sure you understand the thinking behind each rule, check out our League Settings overview.
Draft prep
A good draft will put you in position to have a successful season, and taking time to prepare beforehand is key. That includes formulating strategies and printing out rankings that reflect your league's scoring format.
Don't worry, we have you covered with customized expert rankings and draft strategies in the ESPN Fantasy Basketball draft kit.
Autodraft prep
If you don't plan to take part in a live draft, that's OK. Our system will automatically draft for you.
Still, you have the option of guiding how our system will draft your team. Go to your Team page and click "Edit Autopick Strategy." Here, you can decide which player positions you'd like to pick in which parts of the draft and how many players at each position you want to select overall.
Mock drafts
Mock drafts are simply practice drafts that don't count for anything. It's a terrific way to get used to the ESPN draft software, make sure you know how everything works and test out different strategies. For example, that might mean drafting a point guard in the first round versus drafting a small forward in Round 1 and waiting on a point guard until the fourth round.
These practice drafts also let you see which players are going higher than expected and which are routinely slipping down a round or two (or more). This is extremely useful knowledge that you can take with you in your real draft and use to your advantage, avoiding those "sliding" players until later rounds when you have a good idea that they will still be available.
For an overview of how everything in the ESPN draft room works, click on this link.
The draft
Draft day is the most exciting day of the season, because it's when your team goes from a plan to a reality. It's when you finally get the chance to assemble the group of players you get to root for all season. Of course, you can always add and drop players throughout the year, but the draft is still the most fundamental part of your roster and you want to make sure you don't miss on your top players.
If you have prepared for your draft by reading up on players and strategies, and by participating in several mock drafts, you're on the path to success. Believe in your hunches and don't look back.
To make everything go as smoothly as possible, be sure to follow these handy rules.
The season is starting, let the fun begin!
Trading
In most leagues, there are at least a few managers who enjoy the art of the deal. If you're one of those people, trading is going to be one of the most fun aspects of fantasy basketball. When done well, it's a great opportunity to improve your roster while unloading someone you perhaps no longer want or need.
There are several important factors to keep in mind. You must look at the roster of the team you're trading with and understand which, if any players, that manager might be willing to part with. For example, it'd be unwise to make a trade offer for a point guard on a team that is battling injuries and down to one healthy point guard. Also, while you may never want to send your best trade offer with your first proposal, be careful not to offer up too little. That can be offensive to the other manager and can lead to that person not only declining your offer but ending all future trade talks with you.
In-season strategies
Beyond trading, there are other factors to consider during the season like how to manage your games played in roto leagues, how to approach head-to-head playoffs, and how best to work the waiver wire. Check out the in-season strategies section of our draft kit.
Fantasy basketball etiquette
Every few years, no matter what type of league you're in, you'll run into someone who causes problems. Sometimes it name-calling on the message board and being a bully. Other times it is a constant stream of wild trade offers and questionable transactions. Whether you are in a hyper-competitive league or just trying to have some casual fun, you want to avoid being this way or having others in your league who conduct themselves like this.
Generally speaking, that just means following the golden rule: Treat others the way you'd want to be treated in your league.

How to make watching sports more interesting and make money from your hobby? Experts from Europe's largest fantasy sports platform talk about the basics of strategy, offer registration bonuses and a €200 contest for GipsyTeam readers.
Residents of the world's largest economy have been limited in online entertainment opportunities for years: the sports betting market is heavily regulated and banned in most states, and after Black Friday in 2011, poker was dealt a powerful blow. But restrictions in one area lead to the development of others - first in the United States, and then in other countries, a fantasy sports boom began. More than 60 million Americans now participate in baseball, basketball, hockey and football fantasy tournaments in 2019In 2010, the market size was estimated at $18.6 billion.
Europe is not far behind. The flagship of European fantasy is FanTeam, one of the largest platforms where over $1,000,000 in prize money is played every month. This year, the company signed a sponsorship deal with London's Fulham, is gearing up to host the €300,000 Winter Fantasy Football World Cup and isn't stingy with bonuses for new players.
FanTeam experts talked about how the fantasy sports market works, how it is similar to poker and whether it is possible to make money on it.
What is fantasy sports
Fantasy sports is a virtual game based on real sports events. You collect a team of real players who bring points for effective actions. The rules for scoring points depend on the type of tournament and the playing field.
The player who acquired Ibrahimovic will receive five points for him Depending on the potential of the athlete, he is assigned a price: more talented and capable players are more expensive. In most tournaments, the fantasy manager (fantasy player) is given a budget to build a team that cannot be exceeded.
An example of a team on a conditional budget €
100 million Buying only expensive players with high potential will not work - for a good result, you should always look for cheap, but promising options. In a fantasy tournament, the one who assembles the team with the most points wins.
How fantasy sports is similar to poker
1. Like poker, in fantasy sports you compete against real players, not against the court/office.
2. In fantasy, skill is everything: a weak manager will not be helped by a large bankroll, and a strong one can win prizes solely on understanding the sport.
3. The site takes only the rake.
Advantages of fantasy versus poker
1 Weak field - the vast majority of players are amateurs.
2. Fantasy team building can take quite a bit of time. You decide how much time to spend on analysis and selection of players, and one assembled team can be automatically imported into different tournaments (for example, for €2 and for €20).
3. A market that is actively developing. Every year more players play fantasy, the coverage of sports and leagues expands, and the prize pools increase.
The growing market allows the rooms not to save on marketing budgets and provide players with generous bonuses. Especially for GipsyTeam readers, FanTeam is giving away free tickets in their forum thread.
4. Much less tilt! After registering a team, the result of the tournament depends on the players you have taken to the fantasy team. Even if luck turns away, you will not be able to lose several buy-ins on tilt.
Game statistics example. For a poker player, everything is familiar: ROI, ITM, number of tournaments What is fantasy sports like
Globally, fantasy tournaments are divided into 2 types: seasonal and one-day (daily, or simply daily).
A seasonal fantasy tournament lasts for the duration of the entire competition or a well-defined part of it (eg group stage only or playoffs only). In this format, the player needs to assemble a team before the start of the stage, and then make changes between rounds. Seasonal fantasy can go from one to 9-10 months. There are formats in which the manager assembles the team once and cannot make changes to it until the very end.
Daily fantasy is held within the framework of a specific gaming tour/day/match, the results of the tournament become known in a couple of hours or days.
The prize money is as good as poker Why play fantasy
It's interesting! As betting enthusiasts are well aware, even a small amount can seriously increase the interest in watching a match. But there is another side: fantasy managers can earn serious money by winning tournaments or simply getting into ITM. The fantasy industry in Europe is developing very actively: guaranteed prize pools are growing from season to season.
Here's how the prize money of the FanTeam Seasonal Football League Championship increased:
• Season 18/19 - €100,000, €20,000 for 1st place, €25 buy-in;
• Season 19/20 - €250,000, €50,000 for 1st place, €25 buy-in;
• Season 20/21 - €1,000,000, €200,000 for 1st place, €25 buy-in.
Over the past 2 seasons, the prize fund has increased 10 times! And although players can organize several teams in one championship, this summer the tournament was won by a manager who entered only 1 team.
FanTeam fantasy tournaments are held for a wide variety of sports and leagues:
- football
- basketball
- hockey
- MMA
- motorsports
- tennis
- cricket
- baseball
- American football and even eSports
(CS:GO, DOTA 2, League of Legends)
In every sport, there is a lot of publicly available statistical data and materials that help in the analysis and search for optimal solutions. For the most sophisticated managers, paid resources are available that provide an inexhaustible amount of information. The fantasy player community is growing exponentially, and for some, fantasy is becoming a job and even a main source of income.
Weekly Monster - FanTeam's main daily tournament
In FanTeam's daily fantasy, the guaranteed funds of the main football tournament Weekly Monster in the English league are also very impressive:
3rd place, buy-in €2;
Big Weekly Monster prize pool - €50,000, €5,000 for 1st place, €20 buy-in.
This is not the limit: on some days the prize pools increase. Just a few tours ago, FanTeam secured a massive €100,000 Weekly Monster guarantee.
How is the tournament run? One round, 8-9 matches, 11 players. You create a team of goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders and attackers. You can take no more than 3 players from each real team. Then you choose a captain - the player whose points will be doubled - and a vice-captain - the player who will become the captain if the main does not play for 1 minute. Most often, expensive options from top clubs are indispensable, but inexpensive differential picks of players with a low percentage of possession, but a good expectation, provide a good result in the first place.
How to show your skills?
1. Competently draw up a pool of players with a good expectation, without falling for expensive but unpromising player selections.
2. Choose the right captain.
3. Balance your lineup by combining stars and cheap players with good expectation.
Bonuses for GipsyTeam players
FanTeam has prepared several bonuses especially for GipsyTeam players.
All new FanTeam players will receive a €2 ticket to Saturday's Weekly Monster tournament.
If you make your first deposit and start a blog in the fantasy section of the forum (and write at least a few posts), you will receive a ticket for €20 to Weekly Monster. To confirm participation, add the hashtag #fanteam to the first post.
The author of the most interesting new fantasy sports blog will receive a €200 ticket to the Weekly Monster! The total rating of the five most upvoted posts for the week up to December 24 is taken into account.

How to play fantasy league?
This season in the Parimatch Championship of the Nizhny Novgorod region we are again waiting for the fantasy league, which has already managed to catch the fancy of many fans over the past year.
How fantasy league works : 1) The user registers on fantione.com. You can register through Vkontakte with one click, or you can use an email address, but then the mail will need to be confirmed - without confirmation it will not be possible to play fantasy.
2) Then the user searches for the league he needs (the list of active leagues will be on the main page). In our case, this is the Major League of the Championship of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
3) After selecting a league, the user goes to its page, clicks "Play" and becomes a member.
4) Next, you need to open card sets to find out which players can be fielded on the upcoming fantasy tour. You will have 15 sets of cards. Each set contains 5 cards (for each position - point guard, attacking defender, small forward, heavy forward, center).
5) After opening all the cards, ideally, you need to look at what has fallen. There will almost certainly be duplicate cards - duplicates can be removed, leaving only 1 card of the same cards available. When deleted, the user receives points, which can then be exchanged for new sets of cards (1000 points for 1 set). Removal of a simple card - 100 points, removal of a silver card - 200 points, removal of a gold card - 500 points. The difference in the color of the card is the bonuses that are awarded for each useful action by the player. Regular cards have no bonuses, silver cards have 1 bonus, gold cards have 3 bonuses. Bonuses and which cards drop out are all randomly generated. There will always be 1 silver card in one set. Possibility of getting into the gold card set - 10%. You can delete not only duplicate cards, but also cards of players that, in the user's opinion, will not be useful in fantasy, and he will not put them on upcoming rounds. It is impossible to remove a previously played card in one of the rounds. It is also not recommended to delete everything in a row - a situation may occur that there is no player in the position, and then 0 fantasy points will be awarded to the user for this position.
6) When all the cards are open, you need to go to the selection of the composition in the menu. The choice of the composition is 5 players for the next games, one player for each position. You just need to scroll down and choose from among the available cards those that, in the opinion of the user, will be most useful in the next tour. The choice is simple - scroll down, find a card from the available ones, click on it, and it should automatically appear at the top. Click "Save", etc. no need. Everything is saved. Changes to the selected five can be made before the start of the first game in the upcoming round. You can replace an already issued card if the changes are not blocked yet.
7) After choosing the composition, you can go to the prediction league. The League of Predictions is an additional opportunity to earn points for new sets of cards. There you need to guess the outcomes of matches and some random events. Correct predictions go to the overall standings, as well as to the standings of points that can be sprayed.
At the end of all games, the results for the round are processed, and the site in the "Leaders" section displays user data with their five players by fantasy points. And in the section "Statistics" - indicators of fantasy-points of the players of our Championship. By default, summary indicators are opened, but you can switch to a specific tour.
Please note that one round in the Parimatch Championship of the Nizhny Novgorod region lasts 2 weeks, but in the fantasy league we play for a week, so points are calculated every Monday.
