5 Tips to Guarantee You Win Your Fantasy Basketball League This Season
0 of 5
Fantasy basketball season has arrived, and now's the time to strike and create some separation from the rest of your league mates.
For those who haven't drafted, you'll find a few tips specifically for you in here. In short: Preparation will make or break you.
If you've already drafted, you'll instead need to focus your attention on the early-season waiver wire. Don't hesitate to pick up surprise performers in the first few weeks of the season, especially if one of your late-round picks isn't producing as expected.
Whether it's your first time playing fantasy basketball or you're a seasoned professional at this point, these five tips will help guide you to your league's championship this coming season.
1. Strike Early on Point Guard
1 of 5
If you haven't had your fantasy draft yet, here's the best advice I can offer in 2012-13: Go big on point guard or go home.
With the plethora of young, exciting point guards in the NBA, this suggestion may sound counterintuitive at first. Look a bit deeper, though, and you'll see why it's not so crazy.
Derrick Rose, Ricky Rubio and John Wall will all miss the start of the season due to injuries, and at least five other teams have new starting point guards. With the rise of score-first, pass-second point guards, drafting a traditional PG in the first two or three rounds becomes that much more critical.
Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Russell Westbrook should all be top-six picks in your draft, especially with James Harden's departure from Oklahoma City likely freeing up even more time for Westbrook. Ty Lawson and Kyrie Irving won't be far behind.
If you haven't acquired a point guard by the fourth round, you could already be looking at slim pickings, though. Unless you're ready for Jrue Holiday or Jeremy Lin to be your squad's fantasy starter at the 1, do yourself a favor and make sure you grab a PG in the first three rounds.
2. Go for Multi-Category Stat-Stuffers
2 of 5
In fantasy basketball, there's nothing like players who fill up every single category in the box score, such as LeBron James.
You won't be getting James without a top-two pick this season, but you should be targeting the poor man's versions of him in your draft.
Scoring specialists who don't offer much else have their place in the NBA, but not on your fantasy team. Instead, target players who will contribute their fair share of points, rebounds, assists, three-pointers, steals and/or blocks.
You'll also want to target players, both in the draft and on the waiver wire, who contribute in categories that you might not expect from someone at that position. Think Kevin Love's three-point field-goal shooting or Rajon Rondo's rebounding, for instance.
Drafting multi-category stat-stuffers won't pigeonhole your team into being overly focused on winning certain categories, which will help you maintain flexibility as you work your way toward your fantasy playoffs.
3. Have a List of Sleepers Handy
3 of 5
If you're drafting and you don't have a list of potential fantasy sleepers handy, you're dramatically lowering your squad's chances of taking home your fantasy title. (Here's my top 10.)
Barring injury or other major calamity, you can't really screw up your first few picks that badly. It's those middle rounds where you either forge championship greatness or completely fall apart.
At this point, guys like Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers and Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors have become chic sleeper picks, but they bear repeating here. They're going to each be fantasy gold in 2012-13.
Don't ignore the impact of recent trades and injuries, either. Nikola Pekovic and Derrick Williams of the Minnesota Timberwolves each get a major early-season boost thanks to Kevin Love's broken hand, while Eric Maynor just took on some extra importance with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the wake of the James Harden trade.
The middle rounds of any fantasy draft are all about drafting players who are brimming with potential, whether due to talent, playing time, or a combination of both. Referencing a list of sleepers (or compiling your own!) could be the difference between having a team full of stars or being forced to resort to the waiver wire early.
4. Don't Ignore Players on Terrible Teams
4 of 5
The Orlando Magic and Charlotte Bobcats will be lucky to win 45 games combined in 2012-13.
That doesn't mean you should completely ignore all of their players in terms of fantasy basketball.
Look, someone has to put up stats on those teams. They might not be pretty. They might not be all that impressive. But those teams are each scoring at least 85-90 points per night.
Personally, one of my favorite sleepers of the year, Glen Davis, plays for the Magic. When Dwight Howard went down with his back injury in April, Davis came in and averaged 16.4 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals in only 31.4 minutes per game over the final month of the season.
With Howard now a permanent resident of Los Angeles, Davis has the best shot of any to become his permanent replacement as the focal point in the post. Jameer Nelson of the Magic, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist of the Bobcats and his teammate Bismack Biyombo are all solid later-round picks, too.
5. Plan Accordingly for Your League's Format (Roto vs. Head-to-Head)
5 of 5
If you're going to heed the advice of only one of these slides, make sure it's this last one.
When gearing up for your league this year, make sure you pay close attention to your league's settings, most specifically whether it's a rotisserie or head-to-head format.
Much like points-per-reception in football, player values can dramatically change depending on what format you're playing. (ESPN has a great breakdown of all the differences between the two.)
For instance: The month-long injuries to Kevin Love and Dirk Nowitzki aren't worth sweating about as much in a head-to-head league compared to a roto league. When Love and Nowitzki return, they'll go back to putting up their typically ridiculous averages, so you'll just have to sustain those first few weeks without them in h3H.
In a roto league, however, the games-played limit will cause you to play other, lesser players in the stead of Love and Nowitzki. Those are tough decisions you'll want to try to avoid whenever possible.
Also, h3H leagues introduce the concept of "punting" a category, like any good Dwight Howard owner should try to do with free throws. In essence, you can decide that you'll never try to win a certain category in lieu of winning a few others each week, such as points, rebounds, blocks and field-goal percentage.

There are many types of risk to be aware of when it comes to evaluating NBA players in fantasy basketball, whether it be a player's age, injury history, role in the rotation or perhaps a statistical shortcoming you'll have to build the rest of your team around.

As you put together your fantasy basketball roster, the size and competitiveness of your league will help you determine how many risks you need to be willing to take to position yourself for a true shot at the championship.
In this column, we will focus on 10 of the biggest risk/reward players who can make or break your team in 2022-23.
Anthony Davis, PF/C, Los Angeles Lakers
Davis is one of the league's most dominant power forwards when he's on the court, and he averaged 23. 2 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 2.3 blocks per game last season. The question with Davis, as has seemingly been the case since he entered the league in 2012-13, is whether he can stay healthy. He played in just 40 games last season after logging 36 games in 2020-21, and has reached the 70-games-played mark only twice in 10 NBA seasons (2016-17 and 2017-18). With a 25.6 average draft position in ESPN leagues, Davis is going in the third round in most 10- and 12-team leagues, and he might slide to the fourth round in eight-team leagues, making him a steal if -- and it is a big if -- he can stay on the court.
Tyrese Haliburton, PG/SG, Indiana Pacers
The secret is out about Haliburton, a savvy midround selection last year who is now a high second-rounder in most leagues (13.5 ADP). He takes over as the primary ball handler in Indiana with Malcolm Brogdon now in Boston, and there's reason to believe that the well-rounded 22-year-old can improve upon the 17. 5 PPG, 9.6 APG, 4.3 RPG, 1.8 SPG, 2.2 3PG and 50.2 FG% that he posted after joining the Pacers last season. In fact, Halliburton is a legitimate candidate to lead the league in assists. The issue is that Haliburton goes from being a nice puzzle piece last year to a foundational player on fantasy rosters this season. Anything less than second-round production, and fantasy managers will wish they went with another highly regarded option in Round 2.
Zion Williamson, PF, New Orleans Pelicans
Williamson is looking fit and appears to be in great health leading up to this season. In May, he was cleared for all basketball activities after imaging on the fifth metatarsal on his right foot came back clean. Hey, that's good news, and we'll take it. Williamson enters the season with renewed hopes and a new five-year extension worth up to $231 million. In that deal is a clause requiring the 22-year-old to maintain a certain weight, which should serve as somewhat of a safeguard. Still, questions remain about his durability. He hasn't played in a game since May 4, 2021, and enters his fourth NBA season having played a grand total of 85 games. With a 24.4 ADP, it will take a second- or third-rounder to land him this season, and there's nobody who has a greater risk/reward -- especially in points leagues. Zion has the potential to finish as a top-10 player if he can stay healthy.
Kawhi Leonard, SF/PF, LA Clippers
Leonard missed last season because of a torn ACL, and the last time fantasy managers saw him on the court, he averaged 24.8 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 5.2 APG and 1.6 SPG. It's no slam dunk that Leonard is going to return to the court and quickly be a fantasy dynamo. Any way you look at it, Leonard has missed a lot of games throughout his career; he hasn't ever played 75 games in any of his 11 NBA seasons, and he hasn't played more than 60 in any of the past five (one being shortened by the pandemic). Now age 31, it's very possible that Leonard's workload will be managed and gradually increased as the season progresses. In addition, the Clippers have 15 back-to-backs this season, and that is likely to cost Leonard at least some games. He has top-tier talent when he plays, but the lack of games is concerning for someone with a 26.3 ADP.
Ben Simmons, PG, Brooklyn Nets
Simmons averaged 14.3 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 6.9 APG, 1.6 SPG and 0.6 BPG in 58 games in 2020-21, so it's clear to see why -- even after a missed season -- the 26-year-old former No. 1 overall pick has a 67.6 ADP. He can do so much on the court, so the upside is easy to see. On the flip side, how many games he'll play and where he'll be mentally and physically are the biggest questions after a year and a half off. He must also prove that he can coexist with his teammates. Simmons and the Nets know it will take time for him to get back to his old self. It's important to determine your level of patience as a fantasy manager before you draft him.
Kyrie Irving, PG/SG, Brooklyn Nets
Irving is one of the most unpredictable fantasy basketball players in recent memory. Due to his vaccination status, he played in only 29 games last season, putting up 27.4 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 5.8 APG and 1.4 SPG while shooting 47% from the field. NBA players won't need to be vaccinated to play in the States this year, but Irving still won't be able to play in Toronto, and in recent years he's missed games for a variety of other reasons. Entering the final year of his contract, Irving has much to play for and has the talent to carry fantasy teams. Just know what you're drafting if you take him, as his 30.2 ADP means it will take a pick in the first four rounds of most leagues to land him.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, PG/SG, Oklahoma City Thunder
In 56 games last season, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 24.5 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 5.9 APG, 1.3 SPG, and 0.8 BPG. He is one of the league's brightest young stars. Sadly, Gilgeous-Alexander plays for the Thunder, a team with a long history of tanking. They are surely already eyeing top prospect Victor Wembanyama for next year's NBA draft, and with Chet Holmgren -- the No. 2 overall pick in 2022 -- already out for the season because of a foot injury, the fear of tanking is real in OKC. In September, Gilgeous-Alexander suffered a grade 2 MCL sprain that further complicates his situation. The talent is there for SGA, but a 44.9 ADP makes him a risky pick under the circumstances.
Russell Westbrook, PG, Los Angeles Lakers
Westbrook's fantasy game has always relied on volume, and at this stage of his career, he is better suited for points leagues, as his FT% has taken a nosedive in recent years and his turnovers have remained high. Westbrook's reduced role for the Lakers last season hurt his fantasy value, but he still managed 18.5 PPG, 7.1 APG and 7.4 RPG -- numbers that many players would love to claim. After an offseason to better understand what worked and what didn't, it's possible the 33-year-old point guard can bounce back this season under new head coach Darvin Ham, an ex-Milwaukee Bucks assistant who insists that Westbrook is crucial to the team's success this season. With an ADP all the way down to 75.1, that's a spot in the draft where it might be worth taking a flier on the future Hall of Famer.
LeBron James, PG/SF/PF, Los Angeles Lakers
James was superb last season for a Lakers team that was without Anthony Davis for most of the season, and he finished with 30.3 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 6.2 APG, 1.3 SPG and 1.1 BPG. After signing a $97.1 million, two-year extension, James enters Season 20 with the same lofty expectations that have surrounded him since he was a teenager in Akron, Ohio. The problem is James has a 10.8 ADP, meaning it will take a late first-rounder or an early second-rounder to land him, and that's a lot for a player who turns 38 in December and has missed 63 regular-season games the past two seasons. Taking into account LeBron's age, career minutes played and what figures to be a healthy amount of rest days this season, there are reasons to be cautious here. But when he's on the court, James is still one of the game's best.
This season in the Parimatch Championship of the Nizhny Novgorod region we are again waiting for the fantasy league, which has already managed to catch the fancy of many fans over the past year.
How fantasy league works :
1) A user registers on fantione.com. You can register through Vkontakte with one click, or you can use an email address, but then the mail will need to be confirmed - without confirmation it will not be possible to play fantasy.
2) Then the user searches for the league he needs (the list of active leagues will be on the main page). In our case, this is the Major League of the Championship of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
3) After selecting a league, the user goes to its page, clicks "Play" and becomes a member.
4) Next, you need to open the card sets to find out which players can be fielded for the upcoming fantasy tour. You will have 15 sets of cards. Each set contains 5 cards (for each position - point guard, attacking defender, small forward, heavy forward, center).
5) After opening all the cards, ideally, you need to look at what has fallen. There will almost certainly be duplicate cards - duplicates can be removed, leaving only 1 card of the same cards available. When deleted, the user receives points, which can then be exchanged for new sets of cards (1000 points for 1 set). Removal of a simple card - 100 points, removal of a silver card - 200 points, removal of a gold card - 500 points. The difference in the color of the card is the bonuses that are awarded for each useful action by the player. Regular cards have no bonuses, silver cards have 1 bonus, gold cards have 3 bonuses. Bonuses and which cards drop out are all randomly generated. There will always be 1 silver card in one set. Possibility of getting into the gold card set - 10%. You can delete not only duplicate cards, but also cards of players that, in the user's opinion, will not be useful in fantasy, and he will not put them on upcoming rounds. It is impossible to remove a previously played card in one of the rounds. It is also not recommended to delete everything in a row - a situation may occur that there is no player in the position, and then 0 fantasy points will be awarded to the user for this position.
6) When all the cards are open, you need to go to the selection of the composition in the menu. The choice of the composition is 5 players for the next games, one player for each position. You just need to scroll down and choose from among the available cards those that, in the opinion of the user, will be most useful in the next tour. The choice is simple - scroll down, find a card from the available ones, click on it, and it should automatically appear at the top. Click "Save", etc. no need. Everything is saved. Changes to the selected five can be made before the start of the first game in the upcoming round. You can replace an already issued card if the changes are not blocked yet.
7) After choosing the composition, you can go to the prediction league. The League of Predictions is an additional opportunity to earn points for new sets of cards. There you need to guess the outcomes of matches and some random events. Correct predictions go to the overall standings, as well as to the standings of points that can be sprayed.
At the end of all games, the results for the round are processed, and the site in the "Leaders" section displays user data with their five players by fantasy points. And in the section "Statistics" - indicators of fantasy-points of the players of our Championship. By default, summary indicators are opened, but you can switch to a specific tour.
Please note that one round in the Parimatch Championship of the Nizhny Novgorod region lasts 2 weeks, but in the fantasy league we play for a week, so points are calculated every Monday.

Fantasy basketball is the best way to follow the NBA. The main thing is to add a commissioner, a lottery, fake news and a ring - PRO Basketball - Blogs
American fantasy basketball is a great way to follow the NBA, your favorite players and get the latest news.
I only discovered this thing last year and immediately made a league of friends. Among them are amateur basketball players, a VTB United League player, coaches and just fans. Age of participants from 20 to 36 years. Someone has been following basketball since childhood, and someone started thanks to fantasy. The main thing is that everyone is equally interested. And in this article I will tell you why.
You will be interested in the article:
if your idea of fantasy ends with a tournament on Sports.ru;
if you don't know what fantasy is;
if you don't play because you don't speak English;
if you want to know more about the NBA;
if you have been playing fantasy for a long time, but you do not have enough real NBA attributes: draft lottery, news, commissioner or ring, for example.
What is fantasy
Let's take the ESPN.com tournament as an example.
Fantasy is a virtual game for basketball fans. They recruit real basketball players from the NBA to their team and act as a general manager: they carry out the draft, form the starting lineup for the week, expell, sign and trade players.
The essence is the same - every week to score more points than a rival in the league, to win, to rise in the standings and at the end of the season to become the strongest in the playoffs.
This is the result of a match from last season and two fantasy squad
Fantasy basketball is based on the statistics of players in real basketball matches. It is important for the manager to gather the most effective players in the squad. After all, besides the fact that the effective action of a player in a real match brings points to the fantasy team. His losses and misses take away these points. Therefore, Russell Westbrook, with his triple-doubles and trash throws, is not the best option for fantasy.
The fantasy site or application calculates players' fantasy points in real time. Therefore, it is convenient and easy to follow. For example, a 3-pointer scored by Luka Doncic earns the team manager five fantasy points, and a Miles Turner block gives four points at once.
The table shows all the scoring actions of players who score in fantasy:
And this picture shows how the statistics of a player from a real match are translated into fantasy points:
As you can see in a single confrontation, the center and point guard can be equally valuable.
The most important thing about fantasy on ESPN is the interface and the possibilities. Everything resembles the official NBA website and helps to feel involved in the basketball world. And each real basketball player can only be on one team. Therefore, the number of teams in the league is limited - from 4 to 20.
Why play fantasy
Understand the NBA. Fantasy Tournament is a great introduction to the NBA. Even for those who played basketball only on the console and most of the players do not know at all. Such fans begin to deal with fantasy, select lineups and develop their own tactics. And they organically immerse themselves in the NBA: they start watching matches, find out the names of the players, understand the difference between role players and the main team, and gradually understand the rules.
At the start, managers will definitely make mistakes and learn. For example, in our league, a basketball rookie gave away Drew Holiday and got Buddy Hill. This trade jeopardized the fantasy rookie season and helped the opponent win the championship.
Keep a close eye on the regular season. Fantasy motivates you to follow all regular season matches. The manager of a virtual team must know everything about the players of his team and a little about the players of the opponent: who was injured and how much, who is on fire now, and who fell on the bench.
At the same time, the manager monitors free players, reads the news and understands who replaces whom in real matches in order to sign the most valuable free agent. Therefore, every morning the fantasy manager checks the results of the matches, sometimes watches the games, finds the best players and changes his roster.
Watch matches with excitement. The manager gathers players from different teams. Therefore, he can always choose a match with his players and worry about them. For example, the outcome of a fantasy duel is decided by the match between Indiana and Chicago. The manager in the Sabonis team, and the rival Lavigne. Whoever plays better will win. The manager turns on the match, worries about every productive action of Sabonis and gets angry from every hit of Lavin.
Learn English. The site and app offer an English interface: main tabs, news, injury reports, statistics and forecasts.
At first it is difficult to navigate, but then the manager begins to understand basic basketball terms, watch broadcasts with his players and understand American commentators.
7 Tips for Making Fantasy Interesting
To make fantasy exciting, you need to create an entourage of the real basketball world around it.
1. Come up with a legend. When I launched the PRO League, I invited members through a letter from the NBA. The letter contains the date and time of the draft, highlights of the organization, and the commissioner's name and signature. Legend has it that Adam Silver appointed Kobe Bryant our heavenly commissioner. But a legend is nothing without live reinforcements.
2. Appoint a secret commissioner. In real life, one of the league members or an outside observer is hiding behind the commissar's mask. Kobe Bryant was commissioner last year and Wilt Chamberlain this year.
The commissioner explains the rules to the participants, conducts the draft lottery, helps with the application, resolves conflicts and takes comments from the managers.
3. Create a Telegram channel and chat for discussions
The commissioner writes to the league members on Telegram and asks them about tactics, trades, player injuries, match results and draft expectations. He turns it all into stories and publishes it in the closed Telegram channel "Office PRO League". And he makes it all look like cards from the NBA on ESPN Instagram account.
Chat managers discuss each other's comments, matches, injuries and agree on exchanges. Sometimes they gather for a joint viewing. But most often they swear and tease each other in a comic manner. Therefore, the most reckless atmosphere can be created only in a chat with friends and acquaintances.
4. Hold a draft lottery. One of the most important attributes of fantasy basketball. By default, the computer distributes spades randomly. But in our league, the commissioner runs the draft lottery two weeks before the draft. Managers have time to swap picks if necessary, prepare a draft strategy, draw up a list of desirable players and complain a little about bad picks.
The commissioner runs the lottery backstage and then shoots a video of the draft order. It looks spectacular because the participants do not know the place in advance and do not know the person under the mask.
This is how the lottery went this year:
5. Call and conduct a draft. One of the most exciting parts of the fantasy tournament. The draft takes place on a certain day and a certain hour. So everyone should join. To make it more interesting, we arrange a video conference, because the participants live in different cities. This is how we show emotions when we take away other players or take away someone very desirable. At the same time, we have time to discuss our thoughts on teams and players. You can also get together live and assemble lineups face to face.
6. Place bets and forecasts. This is optional. We play fantasy for fun and have not yet connected the financial part. But they began to think about paid participation and the purchase of various valuable prizes with the money raised. You can also add weekly motivations. For example, advance bets on the outcome of fantasy fights. Or a weekly cash transfer from the manager of the worst team to the manager of the best.
7. Give the champion's ring. Fighting for such a prize is much more interesting than just playing for money.
