How to start a little league basketball team

7 Tips for Starting A Youth Sports League in Your Community

If you saw our recent post on finding the best youth sports organizations in your community, you know that there's a lot that goes into a great league. But what if you went through your local leagues and came up empty? If you're truly passionate about your child or yourself being active in your local community, think participation in sports improves character, or are just simply passionate about community youth mentorship, then it might be time to consider starting your own league.

In a League of Your Own

It's no small feat to start a your own sports league. There's a lot of planning, organization, and even some marketing involved. To help get you on the right track, we've compiled 7 tips for starting a youth sports organization, league or team in your own community.

7 Tips for Starting A Youth Sports League in Your Community

1. Location, location, location.

You need to know this before you try to do anything else. Before anyone can decide if they’d like to get involved with your fledgling league, they will first want to know what the commute is like. Speak to representatives of your local parks, schools, sports complexes, activity centers, and neighborhood fields to find somewhere that fits your budget and size needs.

2. Make a budget.

Speaking of your budgetary needs, it’s time to lay those out. What is your financial goal -- are you starting a profitable business, or do you just need enough to cover expenses? How do you plan to collect membership fees? A service like Venmo or PayPal is ideal because they minimize cash handling and provide an automatic record of transactions. Sit down and figure out how much you’ll need per registrant to cover a facility, referees, equipment, and uniforms. And don’t forget that if you use SquadLocker to outfit your league, you won’t need to chase any of that cash down -- OR struggle with sizing “guesstimates” -- because uniform orders are placed by and shipped to the individual players. We can also help you design a logo and get your gear shipped in two weeks or less; one less hurdle between you and your first game.

3. Introduce yourself.

Once you’ve secured a place to play and formulated a budget, it’s time to give your organization some structure and presence. Create a social media account on a platform that you think will be attractive to your target demographic and use it to broadcast each exciting step as you pull together your league. Spread the word to friends and family and recruit them to join and cross-promote. Your social media page is also a great place to lay out the rules and standards of behavior to which you will adhere.

4. Get what you need.

Now it’s time to purchase any equipment you’ll need. Before you buy, find out what (if anything) will already be provided by your chosen facility. To help save on costs, consider asking local businesses to sponsor your team in exchange for wearing their logo on your apparel or using it in any promotional materials. SquadLocker offers digital coupons for just this purpose (and others!). Ask local businesses or organizations to donate digital coupons to help sponsor your player's uniforms.

5. Stay organized.

You’ll almost certainly want your roster to include each player’s first and last name, jersey number, phone number, and parent contact (if applicable), but you can also choose to include other information you need easily accessible; just keep it manageable and up-to-date. For a template and more suggestions on organizing your roster, see our blog post here. It’s a good idea to keep all your league-related documents in one place; Google’s suite of office tools is a great place to organize your records, but make sure that you keep any personal information secure in accordance with any and all privacy laws. Keep your passwords strictly confidential.

6. Cover your bases.

Keeping your players healthy is one of the most important considerations for any sports league commissioner at the best of times, but it is even more imperative -- and challenging -- in the current environment. Make sure that your COVID protocols are up to par by following the steps laid out in SquadLocker’s eBook, Building Your Return to Play Plan.

7. Time to play!

Be sure to take lots of photos and post them back to social media, and create your own hashtag to make it easy for players to tag and promote your brand new league - and if you have fans who want to show their colors right off the bat, SquadLocker can help you set up a spirit wear and uniform store. Now, tell the coach to put you in -- you’re ready to play!

How to Start a Select Basketball Team

In recent years, basketball has reigned as the #1 team sport in the U.S. According to Sports Business Daily, more than 60 million people over age six play the sport. And 20 million youth between six and 17 play basketball.

Due to the sports’ immense popularity, many people are wondering how to start a select basketball team to grow the game in their area.

Starting a select youth basketball team requires passion and dedication - and a ton of time. But the rewards of seeing young players improve skills and build confidence can make it all worthwhile. Follow these steps to get started!

Choose the Focus of Your AAU Program

When you first form a select basketball program, you probably have big ideas. You may dream of traveling across the country to compete in national events. Or you may want to build a competitive high school basketball program in your area by helping to develop players early.

Those long-range goals may take years to reach. At first, you need to make decisions about team or club structure. If you plan to register with the Amateur Atheltic Union (AAU), you should know you’ll be setting up an AAU club. In the AAU structure, a club can consist of a single team or many teams. Note that there are three levels of AAU club membership that range from $30 to $300.

Also, you should know that there are other select basketball organizations besides AAU. You can look into the National Travel Basketball Association (NTBA) or regional travel leagues in your area.

You need to ask yourself some critical questions as well:

    • Are we focusing on one age group or multiple?

    • Are we offering both boys and girls basketball?

    • What do we hope to achieve in three years, or five, or 10?

    • Will your program be based in one community, or an entire region?

    • Do I want this to be a volunteer run program? Or do I want to have part time employees coaching and running the teams?

These focusing questions and others will help you scope your initial efforts and plan for the future.

Once you have an initial overview of the program you want to start you need to start promoting the new organization.

The easiest first step is to name the organization and create a social media page on either Facebook or Instagram. No need to try to do too much at first, just create a social media page for your teams and announce yourself to the world! You can post the initial goals of the organization and potential tryout dates, age groups, etc.

You should also get a high quality logo for your program. Nowadays you can get access to professional designers easily using services like Upwork or Freelancer. Just create an account and post a simple task for logo or branding creation, and you’ll get applications from designers to work on your logo for you. You can probably get a nice logo created for around $50.

A logo will go a long way toward establishing credibility for you club and getting interest from potential players.

Set Up a Website and Online Payments

When you’ve named or organization and created a logo, setting up a website for your basketball program can also be a simple process and will be a credibility builder for your new organization.

A website should serve as the central location to post information like rosters, coaching profiles, your Mission Statement, and organization history. You should also use your website to register players for tryouts and collect club fees, post tournament schedules, and list event recaps.

As your program grows you can also list organization accomplishments - like tournaments won, college commitments, and academic achievements as your club progresses.

Depending on the software provider you choose for your program, you can also run online registration and communicate with parents through your website.

A website is a great tool to promote your basketball program throughout the year, and also manage all of the administration for your teams.

Form Your First AAU Basketball Team

After you’ve established your initial focus, you are ready to form your first team. You’ll need to secure a coaching staff first.

Parents with high school or college playing experience or current high school players may make good coaches. If you can find like-minded parents that have experience playing or coaching, you might be able to build a coaching staff for your team quickly.

Once your coaching staff is in place, it’s time to select players. You’ll want to hold open tryouts to find the right mix of players and aim to recruit a few standouts.  Try to work with the local high school programs or recreational youth programs to get the word out about your organization.

Getting your roster set is a huge step. Tell everyone to register for an AAU membership if you plan to participate in AAU basketball tournaments. Make sure your team is signed up with NTBA if you want to take part in that league’s events.

Secure Locations and Set Up Schedules

Now you are ready to start holding practices. The advantage of having a select team is that you can choose practice times that work for everyone involved.

Keep in mind that select basketball is a big commitment. And that youth athletes need time for rest between practices and games to avoid the risk of overuse injuries and burnout. According to NBA youth basketball guidelines, players age 11 and under should have at least two rest days per week, with athletes age 12 to 18 needing at least one rest day. The NBA also recommends the following maximum weekly limits for young players:

Make sure not to overwork your players. Practice time should be limited to a couple of days per week, especially if they haven’t entered high school yet.

In choosing a practice location, put safety considerations first. The AAU facility checklist offers excellent tips, such as:

    • Make sure the playing surface is in proper condition

    • Ensure the playing area has proper markings

    • Make sure lighting is adequate

    • Ensure that facilities like bathrooms and locker rooms are in good condition

Often, secondary schools or recreation centers are good facility options. You’ll need to consider available space, times, and costs in selecting your practice venue.

    Select Events and Calculate Costs

After you’ve established your team and practice schedule, you can start researching events. On the AAU website or Exposure Events, you can search by age, state, event type, and more. Youth basketball tournaments take place across the United States, nearly every weekend of the year. However, you’re likely to want to stay closer to home during your first seasons of select basketball.

Keep in mind that tournament registration fees can add up quickly. And travel costs can add up for families too. According to cost data from USA Today High School Sports, playing on a very active team that travels most weekends can cost families up to $5,000 for two seasons of play. If your team can secure sponsorships, you may be lucky enough to lower those costs down to as little as $500 annually.

Start Growing Your Select Basketball Program

For many talented athletes, a select program is a better fit than rec basketball. If your community doesn’t yet have a select team, why not consider starting one? Elite teams help top players improve basketball skill levels and develop their talents.

Select basketball is a big commitment for parents, players, and coaches. But select teams offer young athletes a chance to compete at elite levels. And some tournaments offer exposure to college basketball recruiters. You can play a significant role in helping a gifted player maximize potential by starting a select basketball team.

Love for basketball, the desire to win and the excitement of fighting always lead to high achievements. This happened to Mary Grigoryan, a two-time winner, bronze medalist of the IES-BASKET SBL Championship among girls in the Troitsky and Novomoskovsky districts of Moscow and the European champion among girls in the U-18 category.

Meri Grigoryan is a pupil of Vyacheslav Sergeevich Kalachev, teacher of physical culture at School No. 1392 im. D.V. Ryabinkina (Moscow, Desenovskoye village).

Who better to tell the story of basketball Cinderella than Cinderella herself? Mary shared her success story with us:

    – I studied at a small village school with a small gym. In the 5th grade, at the end of the school year, a new physical education teacher came to our school - Vyacheslav Sergeevich Kalachev. At the lessons we began to play a lot of basketball, Vyacheslav Sergeevich always played with us. He told us that in Moscow there is a big basketball tournament, for participation in which balls are given, and teams that fall into the top ten receive memorable gifts.

Imagine us, four-, five- and sixth graders who have never even seen normal balls.

We listened to the coach with an open mouth. It seems to me that Vyacheslav Sergeevich saw our eyes light up, after which he opened the school section. Of course, my friends and I signed up for it. Training has begun. I really liked the game itself because it is fast and dynamic. And most importantly, you could play with your friends. This has become my main motive. We had a very friendly team.

We trained 4-5 times a week. Training has always been interesting. The group in which I was engaged was mixed, they trained with the boys. I think this was the main reason for our further victories - we have a character. We didn’t want to give in to the guys, and the coach didn’t really let us relax. Vyacheslav Sergeevich demanded complete dedication, even in the game against the guys. I don’t like to lose, and after defeats I constantly think about where and what I did wrong, why we lost, I worry.

A year later we had an excellent team of girls, the leaders we counted on appeared. At the very beginning, I was not one of them. I was the shortest on the team, and it was always difficult for me to throw the ball from an average distance. And I also really wanted to throw threes. I saw how Natasha Smirnova did it in our team, and I envied her. During the games, I tried, but the ball did not even reach the ring. There were moments when I was upset to tears, I wanted to quit basketball. But Vyacheslav Sergeevich always said: “Your time will come, and you will still score your “three points”. I still remember it. And I will not forget how he once said: “You will become a good basketball player and win a big tournament, I believe in you!”

I will never forget the day when Vyacheslav Sergeevich said at the training session that we would play in the IES-BASKET SBL tournament. Joy knew no bounds. And here I am in the 6th grade playing basketball at a big and prestigious tournament. In the first year, in the 2014-2015 season, we took 3rd place in the municipal stage of the Championship. We were invited to Moscow for the award. We went up on stage, I was awarded a medal for 3rd place - it’s impossible to convey those feelings now. Cup, medal and photographs for memory - class!

We were happy, but after the award, Vyacheslav Sergeevich told us at the meeting that we should strive for 1st place and advance to the next stage of the competition. He also told us that the first 8 teams of the city of Moscow receive uniforms from the IES-BASKET school as a gift. And this, probably, became my biggest dream. I wanted to get in shape, and not only me. All the girls dreamed of her. For us, rural girls, this is a super prize.

In the 2015-2016 season we took 1st place in the competitions of the Troitsky and Novomoskovsky districts of Moscow and went to the next stage, where we lost in the 1/8 team of School No. 222. Despite the defeat, it was an unforgettable experience. It was then that I finally decided for myself that I should achieve more. In the third season (2016-2017), we again took first place in the municipal stage. Playing, we believed that we could get into the top eight teams. And we did it – we won the IES-BASKET school uniform! After that, for family reasons, I left for Armenia. It was very nice when my kit was brought to the Republic of Armenia. I was delighted, the dream came true, I was holding my basketball uniform in my hands!

After moving to Armenia, I was worried that basketball had disappeared from my life. I corresponded a lot with the guys, with the coach, they supported me, did not let me lose heart, helped me to believe that I could do everything. I knew that there is a sports school in Yerevan, and there is a team of girls "Arabkir". But how to join an already established team? I was afraid that they would not accept me, but I decided to try.

I want to say a huge thank you to my second coach. Harutyun Alexandrovich Yesayan took me to the team that was formed before me. Believed in me. And after 3 years I ended up in the Armenian national team. It was very difficult, I had two severe injuries. And to be honest, I was ready to give up the idea of getting into the national team. But again, everyone who surrounded me surrounds me now, as well as my parents supported me. I decided that I would not give up and would definitely get into the national team. After all, this is what I promised Vyacheslav Sergeevich, all my friends from Moscow, from Armenia, and, of course, my relatives.

And so it happened. Now I have three medals of the municipal stage of the IES-BASKET SBL, two of which are gold, and a medal of the winner of the European Championship among girls in group C (U-18). I continue to train in the Arabkir team in Yerevan and I know that I have no right to be lazy or work half-heartedly. I know that my progress is being monitored even in Moscow.

It's interesting that I'm not the only basketball player in our family. Even in Moscow, my sister Ani began to study with Vyacheslav Sergeevich. That's who is really a strong basketball player. I hope she will become the winner of the big tournament. Unfortunately, there is no IES-BASKET SBL Championship in Armenia, but we really want to have such a tournament in our republic.

Thanks to everyone who believed and continues to believe in me, in my team. Thanks to the first coach Vyacheslav Sergeevich for instilling in me a love for basketball. Thanks to the organizers of the IES-BASKET SBL tournament for the fact that your Championship is very serious and cool. It was he who gave the impetus, the push that allowed me to stay in basketball.

Thanks to the coach of "Arabkir" Yesayan Harutyun Aleksandrovich and the coach of the Armenian national team Vahagn Harutyunyan Albertovich, who trust me.
And, of course, I really want to say hello to my girls with whom I played in Moscow: Natasha, Emma, Alexandra, Angelina, Sonya, Agnieszka and all the guys ... I love you and will never forget you!

He told about his pupil and the work of a coach and teacher of physical education GBOU School No. 1392 named after. D.V. Ryabinkina Vyacheslav Sergeevich Kalachev :

    – I met Mary Grigoryan in 2014 when I came to work at School No. We have just become Moscow, and schools have many opportunities to prove themselves in sports and other areas.

The school was small, only 350 students. Everyone knew each other, children, at a glance. It was only necessary to choose a sports direction. Mary was in 5th grade at the time. In her class, Mary was the sports head girl. Her personality is crazy. She always wanted to be number one in everything. She jumped, ran, always when I gave tasks, she went out to do it first, even knowing that she would not succeed.

She went to the section from the first day. I don't even remember if she missed even one workout for no good reason? I don't think so. We had a few guys in the team - 12 girls and 10 boys. And they all trained together. In training, the girls always played against the boys. It was at that moment that they laid down the fighting qualities in themselves. We practiced a lot. It came to 5 workouts a week, plus they played everywhere, took part in any yard tournaments. I know Mary as a lighter. She was always eager to play and did not allow anyone to relax.

Winning and getting into the TOP-8 teams in Moscow was our dream. The girls were raving about the uniform of the IES-BASKET SBL. Mary, having played a decisive and victorious game in the 1/4 finals, left for Armenia for family reasons. And the form was handed to us already without it. But the whole team unanimously decided to give her her kit. We are constantly in touch with Mary. I knew that she found a team in Yerevan and is one of the main players. She is strong. She had two injuries, after which many do not return to the sport. But Mary is back. She proves that she is a strong and promising basketball player.

Many thanks to the coaches in the Republic of Armenia for accepting this girl. She was very worried that she would not be accepted. We had a long conversation about this topic. But I know Mary, she will not back down from her goal and promises.
In the spring, Mary told us that she was invited to the Armenian national team. Well, in the summer she became the champion of Europe. Our entire Moscow team congratulated her. Triple pleased that Mary played very well in the final.

Mary played in the Moscow school team for three years. Twice became the winner and once the prize-winner of the TiNAO in the IES-BASKET SBL tournament. I note that every child has a chance to succeed.

In my work in the sports component, I try to make sure that every player on the court is “dangerous” for opponents. Personally, in my opinion, a strong leader is a minus. Children will expect him to act. I always use an individual approach outside the game. We had such children in the team that it was impossible to make even the slightest remark, otherwise they would completely stop playing. Therefore, I know with whom you can and how to talk.

I have never found it difficult to work with children. You just need to be with them on the wave they need, but at the same time not to miss the little things.
I have good teams, we always find a common language. They hear me and that's the main thing. I try to make the team a single whole, I try to educate them in character. If you don't, then it's easy to break you. Every time before the games, I say the same words: "Do not give in character, do not lose the match. " I am sure that all my teams have the character of a fighter.

It is also very important to use the principle “Do no harm and do not interfere” with children. I love extraordinary actions on the court. I love it when a child experiments, but only if it does not become detrimental to the team. In this case, I cut off and scold.

There were many interesting cases in my work, but I always remember the funniest one. It was in Moscow, we played in the Boarding School for Pupils of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. Coming out of the subway, we passed by a shopping center. There is a decorative pipe at a distance of 10 cm from the ground. So, in 4 days I stumbled on it 4 times.

When I almost fell for the fourth time, I turned around and saw the whole group of girls standing aside and laughing out loud. I asked jokingly: "Aren't you ashamed to laugh at the coach?" They replied that they had deliberately left me behind in order to see if I stumbled for the fourth time or not. After this incident, we remember these four trips constantly.

I'm glad Mary's story is of interest to the League. I think this is a really interesting case. I would like to wish IES-BASKET SBL further prosperity. Your tournament opened the way for many children. Good luck in all your endeavors!

The IES-BASKET SBL Championship project is a twelve-year history that annually proves its right to exist, convinces of the correctness of the chosen path. Mary's story is another confirmation of this. We congratulate Mary on her first basketball victories and wish her continued success! We would like to say to all participants of the Championship: “It doesn’t matter how old you got to know basketball, no matter what school you go to, if you love basketball and want to achieve high results, train, work on yourself, believe in yourself, and you will definitely succeed!”

We rejoice in the success of all our basketball players and hope that the number of participants in the Championship will grow every year. Choose a sport, train and win!

from the team's game and individual players, explaining the features of scouting and planning the upcoming game.

Keywords: scouting, scout report of the team, scout report of individual actions of players, women's basketball, Premier League.

Scouting plays a special role in preparing professional teams for upcoming matches in modern basketball. Scouting involves a deep study of the opponent, the result of which is the receipt of information in a systematic way, which provides effective preparation for the game and allows for high-quality team management.

In many Premier League clubs, scouting is the work of an individual scout. His task is to review in detail the matches of the upcoming opponents before a personal meeting and, based on the observations, prepare a scout report, which is then sent to the assistants and directly to the head coach of the team. It is not uncommon for a second coach to prepare the scout report.

To conduct a qualitative analysis of the opposing team, it is advisable to watch at least 3-4 games and pay special attention to games a week or two weeks ago. However, the amount and quality of scouting depends largely on the amount of time before a match and the importance of the upcoming game. Despite the tight schedule in today's professional basketball, tactical preparation for special important games begins early.

Scouting includes two types - written (printed) and video scouting. Print Scouting includes detailed statistics of the opposing team, statistics of individual players, recent matches and joint games, if any. Then, in writing, a description of the team's tactics in attack and defense is carried out, sketches of combinational interactions, which are then worked out in detail in the training process, as well as a detailed description of each player - his technical, physical and psychological characteristics. The final product of written scouting is the scout report, which falls into the hands of the players 1-2 days before the match. The scout report includes the most important information, the possession of which will allow basketball players to solve game problems correctly on the court. The structure of the final report for each team is individual, and the positions of the coaches on the necessary components of it differ. However, it is possible to identify four main blocks of information that should be included in the final report (Table 1). In the first block, the composition of the team, the main statistical indicators of the team and combinations should be presented [3]. In the second block, it is necessary to reveal the structure of the attack and defense of the opponent. The third block is aimed at a detailed analysis of individual players, their strengths and weaknesses. The last fourth block includes basic recommendations for countering the attack and defense against the opposing team.

Psychology plays a special role in scouting, encouraging and motivational phrases are important. Suppose, when playing with a weaker opponent, a mistuning is possible. In this case, it is necessary to pay attention to this during the discussion and motivate the players to the importance of the upcoming match.

Video scouting is a supplement to print scouting, the purpose of which is to visually demonstrate the information contained in the written report. High-quality video scouting includes cuts with examples of certain situations that confirm the effectiveness of the selected counteraction principles on the example of previous games [1]. In the video, it is necessary to show the features of a transit attack, a combination attack, an attack when taking out from behind the sidelines.

As a motivation for the players, it is advisable to show cuts with the activity of the opponent on the rebound, even if playing on the backboard is not a strong point of the opposing team. The principles of team defense, defense against spades and screens deserve special attention.

Dynamo team is in the top clubs of the Russian championship [2], and is also one of the main leaders of the Euroleague season 2018-2019. The opposing team from Turkey occupied one of the last lines in the group before the match, however, they put up decent resistance to their opponents and lost mostly with a small score difference. The upcoming match for the Kursk team was extremely important, since in the previous game the team suffered a serious defeat from the main competitor in the Russian championship - UMMC, and the match with the Turkish team was supposed to help the players rehabilitate themselves in front of the fans. In addition, he was one of the last before New Year's

holidays, many players had accumulated fatigue, and against the background of fatigue, it was impossible to underestimate the opponent.

The coaching staff of the first team consists mainly of Spanish specialists who manage the team, including scouting. The day before the game before the evening training, the players receive a written scout report, which they also get acquainted with during the video viewing. After that, in training, the basic rules formulated in the video viewing are worked out.

The final score of the match is 85:71. As predicted by the coaches, the game was not easy, and throughout the match, the minimum gap between the opponents was recorded. Basketball players of Dynamo largely failed to impose an aggressive game in attack, in connection with this, the game was equal. Despite the warnings of the coaches about the importance of the pre-match mood, in the first half the players made a large number of losses and did not achieve the necessary concentration.

A number of scouting recommendations were not implemented, namely: a high pace of play and aggressive defense were not always maintained, in some cases the opponent’s strengths and weaknesses in individual play were not taken into account, ineffective opposition to snipers, not tight defense in personal pressure throughout the court, allowing a player to enter his zone, etc.

In modern basketball, scouting is an integral part of the preparation for games. Quality scouting can play a decisive role in the outcome of a match. Description of the team's tactics in attack and defense, drawings of combinations that are later worked out in training, as well as a detailed description of each player - this is the work of the coaching staff. The players are required to be able and willing to perceive the information received and to implement the basic principles formulated in the scouting process on the court.
