How to start watching basketball

How to follow the NBA? Easy Guide – Basketball Word!

Are you thinking about starting to follow basketball? Specifically the NBA? Well, today I got you cover, you are probably at a loss as to where you should start. But it won’t be difficult to be part of the action I promise.

So just exactly how do I start following the NBA? An easy way to follow the NBA and become an avid fan is to pick a favorite player, that team your favorite player plays on is your team that you will cheer for and follow. Following your favorite player will help you keep engaged, and watching will be much more enjoyable.

I am going to provide an easy guide on how to follow the NBA.  I will give you some tips and advice on how to start watching basketball so you now can join in on your friends discussing the latest action.

Picking a Player or Team

So you reach the point where you want to start watching basketball and become a fan and for good reason, maybe it’s the excitement or storylines or maybe you want to because your friends watch the NBA. Whatever the case you need to pick a player or team. Usually picking a team is easy when you know which player you like watching, although it doesn’t have to be your favorite team that would help you enjoy watching the game and accepting the team that your favorite player is on.

If you like a team that is in your city even better, I am sure you heard people talking about them at school or at work next to the water cooler. You are probably familiar with some players already. The great thing about basketball is that only 9 to 10 players play a game, so there isn’t a whole lot of players to remember. The superstar names in the league will pop up in basketball news fairly often and you won’t need to remember their names or how good they are because they are mentioned frequently.

Still having a hard time picking a team, pick someone that you think you would want to play like if you made the NBA. As for a team pick one that is winning, it’s no fun watching a team lose over and over again. You are more likely to stop watching basketball altogether. If you don’t want to jump on the bandwagon jump then pick that team’s rival.

NBA’s Youtube Channel

The great thing about the NBA’s youtube channel is that they condense every game and show every shot made in the game all in ten-minute videos so you will never have to miss a game or even a basket. This doesn’t beat the real experience of watching a game live but for games when players score 62 points it’s a thing of beauty to see. If you want to watch every game that played that night you could do it all in one hour.

This is great for people who are following the NBA because it’s very entertaining and keeps you engage. It also great for the times you just don’t have time to commit to a two-hour game. They won’t tell you who wins with the Youtube thumbnail either so you can be surprised by the end of the result which is awesome.

Basketball Video games

Do you like video games? Who doesn’t… video games are an excellent way to get to know players playing in the NBA. There are video games out there for consoles and phones that you can download and play. It is a great way to get familiar with the players in the NBA young and old while also having fun. I have friends who don’t watch basketball but play NBA2k.

If you like stats, you can see a whole list of statistics on players, what they played like the prior year, and how they did. The great thing about the 2k series is you will see a lot of retired players also, this can help you understand past players who were major superstars in the league during their time.

NBA.com

You will eventually need to frequent the NBA’s website, for what’s going on around the league. The NBA is like a soap opera on it’s own with Twitter beef and storylines that get really personal. It is the modern-day trash talk that players use. Why don’t they use it on the court? Some do but if they get caught they can get a technical foul.

Other key things you will want to do to keep up with the NBA is to check out the standings, the league leaders, and the scores. Last but not least you will hear about who’s playing and who’s injured. All of which are easily accessible through a 3 letter word website domain.

All-Star Weekend

A great way to familiarize your self with the NBA superstars is to watch the NBA-Allstar game. The NBA takes a one week break in early February in which a city will host a weekend spectacle of events. Such as the Celebrity basketball game, the dunk competition, and the NBA-Allstar game itself.  All the big names are there young and old, trying to get a piece of the limelight.

The way the players are decided to play in the all-star game is through fan voting. Usually, these are the best players in the league that get to play in the game. It is a very entertaining game to watch and you will learn a whole lot of superstar names in the league that you are not familiar with.

Hopefully, your favorite player makes it to the event or you need a new player. All jokes aside, unlike other leagues winning the all-star game, means nothing in the NBA. It is more of a fun atmosphere with no pressure to perform.

Pay Attention to the Commentators

Paying attention and listening to the commentators is a must if you want information on players related to history injuries and stats. Listening to these old men will help with what is going on in the game while having better insight on players, and news around the league.

The great thing about the commentators is they talk about calls the referees make and will agree or disagree. In watching one game if you’re not too familiar with the call you will probably learn a lot after your done watching. A good tip is if you are unsure of a rule or term just google it and get a quick answer.

Things You Should Know About the NBA

Season – The season is made up of 82 games plus playoffs which are seven-game series.

Rules – There are a lot of rules but you can find all of them here on the NBA. com website.

Injuries – It happens a lot and it seems like severe ones happen more than ever in which a star player is out for the whole season. This can change a team’s chances of being a winner to a loser.

Load Management – This is a term that the NBA now uses when players rest due to nagging injuries and fatigue from the grueling NBA season. A team will do this especially after a player comes back from injury or just before the playoffs if there is no room to move up or down in the standings. Keeping the player healthy and rested is what load management is all about.

Superstars – Maybe not in other sports as much as basketball but one player can make the world of a difference in this team sport (basketball). We’re talking about taking a team far into the playoffs. Usually, 2 or more all-stars are needed in order to win a championship.

Players – 7 to 10 players play a game depending on if the team is winning or not, the rotation is small when there are 15+ players on a team.

Winners – In the season anyone can win but in the playoffs teams that are ranked number one or two usually always win the championship.

How To Get Into Watching Basketball: Top Tips

Even during a pandemic and a shortened season, NBA games managed to attract millions of viewers. Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the country and it’s just as much fun to watch as it is to play.

Basketball is a sport that’s over 100 years old. It has many established rules, teams, statistics, and cultures within it. This can all make it intimidating and even overwhelming for anyone who is just starting to wonder how to get into watching basketball.

However, it’s actually fairly easy and enjoyable to start watching basketball. And we’re here to help you do that. So keep on reading and we’ll walk you through everything that you need to know to get into basketball.

  • Know the History of Basketball

James Naismith invented the game of basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts in the year 1891. According to legend, James was asked to come up with a game that could be played indoors and was less dangerous than American football.

He came up with a game that involved shooting a ball into a peach basket. This first iteration of basketball had nine players from each team on the court.

Unlike today’s hoops with nets, the peach basket had a bottom, so the ball had to be pushed out of the basket after each successful shot.

Unsure what to call his new game, one student suggested Naismith Ball. Naismith wisely opted for the title of “Basketball” instead. The first game of basketball ended with a score of 1-0.

Basketball was so popular at Naismith’s YMCA that it soon became a common sport at many American colleges. Naismith himself would coach the basketball team for the University of Kansas and would surprisingly end his first season with a losing record.

Multiple professional leagues started popping up across the country as well. In 1936, basketball became so popular that it even became an Olympic sport.

Eventually, in 1949, the National Basketball Association (NBA) was founded. The NBA was formed through mergers of various smaller professional leagues and continues to be the top professional basketball league in the world.

  • Understand the Basics of Basketball

Basketball is a team sport. Two teams put five of their players on the court to play against each other. The object of the game is to get more points than your opponent by shooting baskets.

If the offensive team holds the ball behind the mid-court line, then they have ten seconds to get the ball onto the other side of the line. If they don’t, then the other team gets the ball.

The ball has to make its way down the court through dribbling or passing. The team that possesses the ball is the offense. The other team is the defense.

When a team scores a basket, they get two points and then the ball goes to the other team. If someone makes a basket outside of the three-point line, then the shot is worth three points.

If someone makes a free throw shot, their team is awarded one point.

Each game is split into sections. And all levels of basketball are played in two halves. In college, each game is forty minutes long.

In the NBA, games are 48 minutes long.

  • Know the Positions

Unlike other sports, the positions in basketball are not as rigid. With that said, as the game has developed, positions have developed that have been adopted by pretty much every major basketball team. Let’s look at those positions below.

Point Guard

The point guard is usually the leader of the team. They tend to be the best passer and ball-handler on the team.

This person is usually very fast and they’re good at driving the ball. Because of this, they tend to lead their team in assists and are able to take shots for themselves as well.

These players are quick and can hit shots from various locations on the court. The point guard usually has a deep understanding of the game and is able to direct their teammates during gameplay in order to maximize their chances of winning.

Interestingly enough, point guards tend to be the shortest players on the team.

While the other players are more focused on scoring points, the point guard should be trying to figure out how to set their team up for the best chances of success.

Shooting Guard

The shooting guard is usually seen as a wing. These players tend to be excellent shooters and are able to move around the three-point line with the ball with ease.

A shooting guard also needs to be able to make themselves more open so that they can set themselves up for successful shots.

Small Forward

The small forward is the most versatile position on the team. They tend to be great dribblers and need to fill in when their teammates are not open or are being double-teamed. They tend to act similarly to the point guard.

A small forward needs to be strong and fast. They tend to get fouled a lot due to the kinds of shots they take.

Power Forward

The power forward tends to be the team’s most dependent and powerful shooter. They usually post up close to the basket and wait to be passed the ball. Power forwards are big in size and tend to be close to seven feet tall.

On defense, a power forward will usually guard the bigger players.

Center

Finally, there is the center. This player tends to hang around the baseline and is usually the biggest player on the team. They usually take shots close to the basket and are great at getting rebounds and setting screens.

Over the years, faster and more versatile players have been filling the role of the center. A center who can score close to the basket is able to create balance for the offense.

If the center is really good, they’ll get double-teamed which can lead to more open shots for other players.

  • Understand the NBA

The National Basketball Association is made up of thirty teams across the United States and Canada. There are Western and Eastern Conferences, each containing fifteen teams.

In each conference, there are three divisions. The Western Conference is made up of the Pacific, Northwest, and Southwest divisions. The Eastern Conference is made up of the Southeast, Central, and Atlantic divisions.

One standard season contains 82 games. And the top eight teams from each conference go on to play in the postseason.

Each team in the NBA has a head coach as well as multiple assistant coaches. There are usually assistant coaches for all aspects of the game, including player development, interior scoring, rebounding, defense, and offense.

Some of the best coaches in NBA history are Larry Brown, Jerry Sloan, Phil Jackson, Red Auerbach, and Don Nelson.

  • Understand How to Watch Basketball Games

You can’t really get into watching basketball games without actually being able to watch basketball games. It can be a bit difficult to get access to every NBA game in a season.

If you want that kind of access, then you should consider signing up for a cable package.  These packages allow you to watch ABC, NBA TV, ESPN, and TNT. These channels cover all of the major NBA game broadcasts.

YouTube TV also comes with all of the major NBA broadcasts. You can also pay extra for their League Pass. Any game that you miss can be recorded on YouTube TV’s unlimited DVR.

The best part about League Pass is that you get live access to all of the games that are not in your local area. However, you can’t get access to your local team or to the NBA postseason. You’ll be able to watch those games on-demand three hours after they air.

  • Pick Your Favorite NBA Team

If you want to get into any sport, it’s best to have a favorite team to root for. For many people, this is simply the team that’s closest to their hometown. However, as a new person to basketball, you might not feel any connection to your home team.

What’s nice about the NBA is that it’s not as tribalistic as the NFL and fans don’t get as crazy when they find out you like a different team.

If you want to be a frontrunner and pick the easiest team to cheer for, you should go with a club like the Los Angeles Lakers or the Golden State Warriors. While the Warriors are probably the best team in the NBA, the Lakers have a strong history and are seen as a dominant force in the league.

If you want to be more patient and pick a team that can grow into a successful franchise, you should consider teams like the Chicago Bulls, Brooklyn Nets, Atlanta Hawks, Orlando Magic, or New York Knicks.

If you’d rather support a team with the most dedicated fanbase, we suggest that you consider cheering for either the San Antonio Spurs or the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The most fulfilling teams to cheer for are the ones who are talented enough to overachieve and young enough to grow into themselves. Do you want to pick a team with a lot of promise and look as if you put a lot of thought into your favorite team? If so, then you should go with a team like the Utah Jazz, Denver Nuggets, or the Indiana Pacers. The best way to completely enjoy the thrill of a Utah Jazz game is to check the Jazz schedule and get tickets.

  • Understand College Basketball

As fun as it is to watch grown men run around and throw a ball to each other, it’s even more exhilarating to watch the next generation of great athletes do it.

Each year, the country goes crazy for March Madness as they hope their alma mater makes it all the way to the championship.

The NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament consists of 68 teams that play against each other in seven rounds in order to win the national championship. The penultimate round is referred to as the Final Four.

For the selection process, there are 32 Division I conferences that all get an automatic bid. Those bids are awarded to the teams that win the postseason conference tournament.

There’s also a selection committee that decides which other 36 teams will play in March Madness that year.

College basketball tends to be a lot of fun to watch for a number of reasons. First off, college players don’t get paid (although those rules are changing). Because they don’t get paid, it gives the sensation that they’re playing in order to win and not just to cash a check.

Also, college fans tend to be rowdy and full of energy. Because these people picked to go to that school, they have more attachment to their teams than a person who was simply born in the same state as their favorite team.

College basketball is also a lot of fun to bet on. Sites like Doc’s Sports offer helpful betting tips and strategies for betting beginners and veterans alike.

How to learn to play basketball, when to start, what exercises are effective

In each school, children are introduced to different sports, and the most common games are volleyball and basketball. They tell the basics, but few people after these lessons become Michael Jordan. However, it is quite possible to achieve sports success. If you always hit the ball in the basket and decided to learn how to learn how to play basketball, read this article. We'll walk you through the first steps to help beginners start playing well.

At what age should you start playing basketball?

Of course, if you want to build a career as a basketball player, you have to start in childhood. The most optimal age for the first basketball lessons is 8-9 years old. Some professionals started at the age of 12, but not later. At this age, the body is considered sufficiently strong, and the brain is ready to build complex schemes.

Sometimes a child is too small and is not taken to the section. But his parents may be advised to attend prep basketball for 1-2 years. There, the kid will not be taught the technique of the game, but he will begin to learn how to control the ball. This game will positively affect the health of the child and his development. It helps to develop endurance, develop coordination and agility. Basketball players improve their vision and logical thinking.

Who is banned from basketball practice?

They are not available to people with the following conditions:

  • cardiovascular diseases;

  • excessive mobility of the cervical vertebrae;

  • flat feet;

  • gastric ulcer;

  • asthma and other respiratory diseases;

  • diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

Exercises for Beginner Basketball Players

Not a single training session takes place without these basketball exercises, therefore, their implementation must be approached especially responsibly. They are aimed at developing the basic necessary skills:

To speed up the effect of basketball training, start with 5 minutes of running without stress.

After that, you can do the following exercises, which are needed to warm up each muscle group.

Shoulders

Stand up straight and stretch your arms out to the sides. Straight arms should move in a circle: 10 turns back and forth.

Pelvis

Fix the hands on the belt and place the legs shoulder-width apart. Perform rotations in the hip joint.

Back

Bend your elbows and press them to your chest. Put your feet shoulder width apart. Turn right and left 5-10 times in each direction.

Knees

Stand up straight, connect your toes and heels. Bend your knees slightly and put your hands on them. Perform circular movements with your knees, helping yourself with your hands.

Ankle

Keeping the hands on the belt, and placing the right foot on the toe behind the back behind you, you need to make several rotations of the feet. After a while, change legs.

Squats

Squat 5 times. The exercise must be performed carefully, do not lift your heels off the floor, and stretch your arms in front of you.

How to learn how to throw the ball correctly?

The ability to throw the ball correctly is practically the most important thing in basketball, so pay more attention to throwing exercises.

  • Stand 2-3 meters from the ring. Take two slow steps. Standing on one leg, throw the ball into the ring;
  • get behind the line. Hit the ball on the floor a couple of times. Take two steps towards the ring. Throw the ball into the basket;
  • standing on the three-point line, throw the ball into the wall and catch it. Take two steps and throw the ball around the ring;
  • to get the ball into the basket, you need to throw it into the corner of the rectangle drawn on the shield.

Leg development

If you take an extra step, you can lose points and let the team down, so you need to have trained legs. Practice the jump stop.

  • Do not change location during exercise;
  • throw the ball at the wall, catch it with both hands and at the same time jump with both feet;
  • choose one leg as a fulcrum and turn forward and backward on it;
  • imagine that you are catching the ball with your hands while jumping, land and make turns on the supporting leg. Please note that you need to land on 2 legs.

Practicing the pass

Basketball is a team game. Even if you accurately hit the ring, you still cannot pass the ball to others, you will be of little use to the team.

  • Stand 2-3 m from the wall. Throw the ball at her twice and catch it;
  • hold the ball with both hands. Make a movement with brushes, directing it to the wall;
  • Gradually increase the distance between the player and the wall. During long passes, you need to take a step forward.

Learning to dribble

Do you remember how pathetically Adriano Celentano dribbled the ball in the movie "The Taming of the Shrew"? You can do the same if you practice these exercises;

  • quickly toss the ball with your fingers, keeping it off the floor;
  • transfer the ball from one hand to the other, wrapping it around the body, head or leg.

Basketball is a very versatile sport, so many skills will need to be developed.
