An aircraft carrier will host college basketball's premier opening week matchup between Gonzaga and Michigan State

By David Cobb

USATSI

For the first time in a decade, the deck of an aircraft carrier will be the site for an NCAA Division I men's college basketball game as No. 2 Gonzaga faces Michigan State on Friday in what is considered the marquee game of the opening week of the 2022-23 season. Docked off the coast of San Diego, the USS Abraham Lincoln will play host to the Veterans Day showdown between two of the sport's premier programs, which is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.

While the spectacle of a basketball game being played outdoors on the deck of a 1,092-foot long Naval vessel is something to behold, the game still counts. Come time for NCAA Tournament seeding, the loser of this game won't get a pass for the result because the wind blew some of their outside shots off-course on Nov. 11.

The forecast calls for clear skies and temperatures around 60 degrees for the matchup, which is the first between the Bulldogs and Spartans since the 2011-12 season. Michigan State leads the all-time series 3-1, but the Bulldogs are beginning this season with significantly higher expectations than the Spartans, who were unranked in the preseason AP poll for just the fourth time in the past 26 seasons.

Michigan State vs. Gonzaga: Need to know

Controversial concept: Five college basketball games have been scheduled for aircraft carriers in the past as part of what was dubbed the "Carrier Classic." But the series met mixed reviews when weather conditions threw a wrench in the plans. Florida and Georgetown had an aircraft carrier game canceled at halftime in the 2012-13 season when condensation on the court made conditions too slippery. A similar issue led to the cancellation of a game between Marquette and Ohio State the same day. But the first-ever game of this type — played between Michigan State and North Carolina in 2011 — was a well-received spectacle, although it resulted in a 67-55 loss for the Spartans.

Tough slates: Both these teams are playing challenging non conference schedules. In fact, the Spartans' slate is ranked No. 1 most challenging by CBS Sports with Gonzaga's non league slate ranking No. 3. After drama-free season-opening victories on Monday, this game merely marks the start of an arduous stretch for both teams. The Zags play No. 12 Texas and No. 4 Kentucky in their next two games while Michigan State's next two are against Kentucky and No. 16 Villanova.

Star players: Gonzaga has a clear star in senior forward Drew Timme, who should surpass 2,000 career points this season, barring injury. Timme is the 2022-23 CBS Sports Preseason Player of the Year and one of three Gonzaga players on our list of the Top 101 players in the sport, along with Julian Strawther (No. 56) and Rasir Bolton (No. 81). Meanwhile, Michigan State does not return a single player who averaged double figures last season — in part because there was only one — and does not have a player on our top 101 list. Senior forward Joey Hauser led the Spartans with 18 points in their season-opening 73-55 win over Northern Arizona, but it's unclear who the Spartans' star player will be, if one emerges at all.

Michigan State is still early in the process of figuring out an identity with a roster that has no clear stars. Gonzaga has an alpha in Drew Timme and the offensive chops to go on debilitating runs in those moments when the Spartans hit offensive dry spells. Play this game again in March and perhaps it's a different story, but the Zags should validate their No. 2 preseason ranking much like they did in a 12-point win over a Texas team that was ranked No. 5 in the second game of last season. Prediction: Gonzaga -10

Who's Playing

Northern Arizona @ Michigan State

What to Know

The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks and the Michigan State Spartans will face off at 7 p.m. ET November 7th at Jack Breslin Student Events Center to kick off their 2022 seasons. Last year was nothing to brag about for Northern Arizona (9-23), so the team is looking forward to a new start. MSU was 23-13 last season and made it as far as the second round of the NCAA tournament before being knocked out by the Duke Blue Devils 85-76.

A pair of last-season stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: The Lumberjacks were 350th worst when it came to takeaways last year, with the squad coming up with only 9.7 on average (bottom 101%). MSUs had an even harder time: they ranked 16th worst with respect to takeaways last season, where the squad accrued only 10.4 on average (bottom 96%). It's possible one of these Achilles' heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.

Since the experts predict a loss, Northern Arizona will need to dig deep. Perhaps they'll be able to flip the script and come out with a big win.

  • From 18 to 23 June, Amsterdam hosts the main tournament of the year in 3x3 basketball - the World Cup, in which 20 men's teams and 20 women's teams take part
  • 3×3 basketball is a new Olympic discipline starting from Tokyo 2020. About how Russia can get to the Games in Japan - also in this text

  • The composition of the Russian women's team at the 2019 World Cup: Anna Leshkovtseva, Anastasia Logunova, Alexandra Stolyar, Olga Frolkina. Group opponents: June 19 - Indonesia and Ukraine, June 21 - Italy and New Zealand
  • The top two teams (out of five) from each group advance to the playoffs. On June 22, quarter-finals will be held, on June 23 - semi-finals, matches for 3rd place and finals
  • The best achievement of the Russian men's team is 3rd place at the 2014 World Cup in Moscow. The current world champion is Serbia. The Russian women's team won the 2017 World Cup and came second twice more (2014, 2018). Current world champion - Italy

The World Cup is also called the World Championship, and in principle this is not a mistake. In football, there are also two names in parallel: "World Cup" is more common in the world, "World Cup" - in Russia. FIFA doesn't mind.

But 3×3 basketball is the only correct name for the sport. The word "streetball" can hide games with a different number of participants and according to different rules. But only 3×3 basketball is included in the Olympic program. His motto is now appropriate: "From the streets to the Olympics." Everything became too serious, and it was time to get rid of the "street" prefix. Moreover, you can play not only in the open air.

Still, the best of streetball remains in 3×3 basketball. These are great street views. Now many tournaments are held both in halls and even in shopping centers, but the top one is to play basketball against the backdrop of the Prague Castle or the Eiffel Tower.

In Amsterdam, a 3x3 basketball court will be installed in one of the iconic places - the Museumplein.

How 3×3 basketball is played

Photo: © Jamie Squire / Staff / Getty Images Sport / Gettyimages.ru

The main difference from “classic” basketball is that they play on one hoop. They took half of the standard court (in 5x5 basketball, the dimensions are 15x28 meters) and shortened it a little more to adjust for dynamism and the number of players.

Another feature: for hitting from close and medium distances in 3x3 basketball they give 1 point (instead of 2), for an accurate throw from behind an arc with a radius of 6. 75 m - 2 points (instead of 3). And this is very important, because in the parquet version of basketball, a long-range shot is only one and a half times "more expensive" than usual, and in the street version - twice. In colloquial speech, long-range shots in 3x3 basketball are habitually called "threes", so don't let yourself be confused.

The ball in 3×3 basketball is also its own, special. First, ribbed. Secondly, it is slightly smaller, size 6 (in 5×5 this size is used only in women's tournaments - men play with "seven"), but at the same time the same weight as a "standard" men's basketball.

The surface of the site is also different. 3×3 basketball is played not on parquet, but on special mesh plastic. It is better suited for open air: it passes both liquid and street dust. Such a court does not have to be constantly wiped.

Rules

Only 4 players per team (3 players on court + 1 substitute). There are no official coaches in 3×3 basketball. That is, they are, but they sit only in the spectator stands and do not have the right to prompt during the game (technical foul for violation). So during the game, the team is on its own. Time-outs are taken only by players. Which combination to play is also up to them.

Yes, here's another question: if they play for one ring, how do they not get confused?

In 5x5 basketball, the transfer of possession from one team to another is easy to visualize: run to the left - run to the right. There is no such thing in 3 × 3, so they came up with a rule for taking the ball over the two-point line. If a team A player throws and misses, and a team B player takes the rebound, then he cannot attack immediately. First you need to get the ball past the two-point line. You can take him out yourself with a dribble, or you can pass to the partner standing behind the arc (then you don’t have to go out yourself). If you forget about it, it will turn out that you are attacking in your ring. The good news is that your opponents won't get points for this. Bad: you too, they will also take away the ball.

3×3 is much faster than regular basketball, and here teams play several matches a day (at the World Cup - no more than two, but in other tournaments there are 4). The attack here is given half as much - only 12 seconds, not 24. And the entire match lasts 10 minutes of pure time. You can finish it ahead of schedule - if one of the teams scores 21 points (it is considered a special chic to score 22 if you throw a two-pointer with a score of 20).

But if after 10 minutes there is a draw, overtime is played. Not counting time, just up to 2 points scored. They can be scored with two throws - or one long-range one. If 20:20 is played in regular time, then the game will not stop after 21 points in extra time.

There are no personal fouls in 3x3 basketball (technical and unsportsmanlike exceptions), but it is very important to keep an eye on team fouls. Until you have accumulated 7 fouls per team, only fouls on the throwing opponent will be penalized (1 penalty for a foul on a one-pointer, 2 for a two-pointer). If the opponent scored with a foul - both the ball will be counted, and an additional 1 penalty will be thrown to you.

But starting from the 7th team foul, the opponent will throw two free throws, even if you broke the rules 10 meters from the ring. And this is very dangerous: on the scale of 3x3 basketball, even two points is a lot. Your affairs are very bad if you have scored 10 or more team fouls: then after the free throws, the opponent will also retain the right to attack.

You cannot qualify for the Tokyo Games directly from the World Cup, but you can earn important ranking points that are given for participating in all tournaments (both in national teams and with club teams).

From 18 to 21 June — group tournament. There are 5 teams in each group, respectively, all of them have 4 matches at this stage. The schedule is designed in such a way that the two Russian teams do not overlap on days: men play on Tuesday and Thursday, women play on Wednesday and Friday. Playoffs on Saturday and Sunday.

Selection for the 2020 Olympics

Finally, the most important thing: the Olympic selection. Basketball 3×3 is a new discipline, and only 8 teams each for men and women will play at the first Olympics. Of course, this is very little. But Russia has good chances. We explain.

You can get to Tokyo through qualification, but there is a very big competition: 20 teams for 3 places. There is one more "small" qualification - for countries that were not represented at the last two Olympiads by either men's or women's teams in 5x5 basketball. The Russian national teams missed Rio 2016, but were in London 2012, so this selection is not for us.

The most reliable selection method in Tokyo is through the national ranking. Here, the system is approximately the same as in tennis: for each tournament, the player receives points. The higher the level of the tournament, the more points. The 9 best tournaments of the year are summed up in the player's personal rating, and the points of the top 100 players in the country are summed up in the national rating. The more massive 3x3 basketball is in the country (it is best with this in the countries of the former Yugoslavia, and now in Russia too) - the better for the country's rating.

It is according to this national rating that on November 1 this year, three men's and three women's teams will be selected for the Olympics (but no more than two from the continent). If the selection was carried out according to today's rating, then Russia would get into Tokyo with a margin. Among men, we are second after Serbia, among women we are generally first.

Photo: © globallookpress.com

The top of the national ranking now looks like this.

Men

1. Serbia - 34300515

2. Russia - 28992070

3. China - 20478360

4. Slovenia - 20299815

Women

1. Russia - 8263 729

2. China - 7664782

3. Mongolia - 6023116

4. Romania - 4935859

To keep it that way, you need to perform well in Amsterdam.
