The first edition of "Live Action with Carolina Basketball" will take place on Friday night in the Smith Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the event starts at 7:30 pm. "Live Action" is the rebranded version of "Late Night," a celebration of North Carolina basketball and the unofficial beginning of the college basketball season. The Tar Heels began practice for the 2022-23 season on Monday, Sept. 26.

The new "Live Action" name refers to a comment from North Carolina coach Hubert Davis during an in-game interview at the NCAA championship game in April. He excitedly told television reporter Tracy Wolfson: “Pretty fun game, isn’t it? We’re competing out there. It’s live action, Tracy. It’s live action out there.”

"Live Action" will feature both the men's and women's teams. Carolina Basketball's GameDay host B Daht will emcee the festivities, which will include player and staff introductions, a combined three-point shooting contest and intra-squad scrimmages by both teams.

North Carolina enters the 2022-23 ranked No. 1 in many early preseason polls. The Tar Heels return four of five starters from last year''s team that made it to the Final Four before losing to Kansas in the National Championship game. Back for UNC are R.J. Davis, Caleb Love, Leaky Black, and Armando Bacot and reserves including Puff Johnson and Dontrez Styles. The team's offseason additions were Northwestern frontcourt transfer Pete Nance and three freshmen -- guard Seth Trimble, wing Tyler Nickel, and forward Jalen Washington, plus forward Will Shaver who joined the program in January.

“The thing that I like about our team right now is there’s a hunger and a thirst and a desire and it’s coming from the returning payers, from what they experienced last year, and then the newness of the freshmen that are really excited," Davis said during an offseason press conference. "Combining that together, I think we’re in a good spot. We’re always actively looking to improve our team and it’s not just about basketball. One thing we have is great chemistry.”

“Having that senior leadership is a huge part of us having success next year. We have basically our entire team coming back. Having that veteran leadership is huge in terms of developing a team.”

Fans got a first look at the 2022-23 squad late last month for the NLI-inspired Blue-White Scrimmage (video highlights). The Tar Heels were led by those returning veterans in that exhibition, as the high scorers were R.J. Davis (24 points), Love (22 points), and Bacot (19 points, 20 rebounds).

UNC has an exhibition game vs. Johnson C. Smith scheduled on Oct. 28 and the season opener is Nov. 7 at the Smith Center against UNC Wilmington.

what to expect and where to watch

At the World Championship 2022 in basketball among women's teams, which takes place in Sydney, On September 29, , the quarterfinal matches took place and the four strongest teams were determined. At Friday, September 30, , in the semi-finals of the tournament will meet: USA - Canada and China - Australia .

None of the quarterfinal matches had a tense struggle. The US team coped with the Serbian team without any problems (88:55). At the same time, long-range shots were not very good for American women, which they performed with an accuracy of only 33 percent (11 out of 33). But even so, the struggle in the match was limited to only the first quarter, after which the advantage of the US team was only two points - 25:23. However, by the big break, the Americans were leading by 17 points, and the outcome of the fight was not in doubt. "Double-double" in this match was made by the attacker of the USA Alisha Thomas who added 7 more assists to her 13 points and 14 rebounds.

The quarterfinal match was even easier for the Canadian team, which, in the meeting with the Puerto Rico team, already in the course of the first half of the game, went into the lead by 22 points - 37:15 after an accurate three-pointer by Nirra Fields in the 16th minute. In the future, the Canadians calmly kept this comfortable advantage in the score and confidently brought the match to victory. The final score is 79:60 in favor of Canada.

The French national team in its quarterfinal failed to impose a fight on the Chinese women, whom the International Basketball Federation in its ranking of Top 8 participants put in second place after the US team. The Chinese national team can be called a complete mystery for rivals. For example, her striker Huang Xijing in an important group stage match against the Americans spent only 10 minutes on the court and did not score a single point. But in the quarterfinals with France, she hardly left the floor at all, becoming one of the main characters of the meeting - 38 and a half minutes in the game, 18 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. In the French team, this evening, again, as in the group stage of the tournament, there was no real leader, and as a result - a defeat of 71:85.

In the final quarter-final match between Australia and Belgium, a lot was decided before it even started, when it became known that the main star of the Belgian national team Emma Misseman would not be able to enter the court due to an injury. And Belgium, with and without Misseman, are two completely different teams in terms of strength. As a result, in the absence of their superstar, the European team did not have serious counterarguments against the powerful team of hostesses - 69:86.

The semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup will be held on 30 October. In the North American derby USA - Canada, the chances of the Americans are much more preferable. Thanks to their duo of centers in the Kayla Alexander and Natalie Ochonwa Canadians look good under the shields (they are the best in offensive rebounding in the tournament, and Alexander is far ahead of all her pursuers in this statistical category), but this is the only component of the game in which they can compete almost on an equal footing with the US team. In general, the class of Olympic champions is much higher, and the Canadian team will have to jump over their heads to take away their right to play in the final.

But in the meeting between China and Australia it is very difficult to name a favorite. So far, the Chinese have looked more stable in this tournament, but their stands in the huge Sydney Superdome can become an important factor in favor of the Australian team. It is curious that the Chinese team won the World Cup medals for the last time 28 years ago - it was the silver of the 1994 World Cup. Moreover, the tournament was then also held in Australia, and in the semi-final, which was incredible in terms of drama, the Chinese beat the team of the Green Continent - 66:65. Historical parallels suggest themselves.
