The good news is this post will answer the exact question, but also uncovers grey areas for those without a degree, exploring what opportunities exist for you.

Do You Need a Degree to Coach High School Basketball? Government or public schools almost always require a bachelor’s degree, but rarely in a particular field. However, the private school system has different regulations and doesn’t often require a bachelor’s degree to coach. Experience, successful completion of prior coaching and first aid/CPR courses will boost ones application.

High School Basketball Coach Qualifications

Do you need a degree to become a high school basketball coach? The answer is mostly yes, but there are some exceptions.

However, interestingly, not all high school sports coaches have obtained a bachelor’s degree.

Some schools may recognize an associate degree, (which is the level of qualification between a high school diploma or General Educational Development – GED and a bachelor’s degree) which gives coaches with a love for the game an opportunity to still coach without a degree.

Some schools may even hire coaches for non-teaching roles, such as janitorial or secretarial work, that do not require a college degree either. This allows the coaches to experience life at the school as a member of staff, to build relationships and appreciate life outside the basketball court.

So what if you do want to go back to school, to be able to coach high school basketball in the public school system?

Maybe you want to go and coach back at your local high school, giving back to the community who contributed so much to your own personal development.

Maybe you want to coach at the same school your own children are at, as you’ve always been their coach and it just feels right?

When choosing a degree to study, it may be a logical choice to choose one which is relevant to coaching basketball, but it doesn’t have to be.

To become a high school basketball coach you simply need to hold a bachelor’s degree in something.

But before you rush off and enroll in a mathematics degree because you like maths, it could be a better idea to study something which could educate your athletes.

Think sports medicine, physiotherapy or nutrition. Or maybe you could consider studying something you could use as either a hobby or new career if you’re looking for a change, though this may not be advisable by the school if it’s not relevant to coaching…

It also might be a good idea to see which schools locally are desperate for a particular teacher’s specialty. If you are weighing up multiple areas, this may be a good tool to narrow down your choices.

The interesting thing with choosing a major, such as sports management or physical education, is that the course work for these particular courses often requires you to complete a section in sports coaching anyway. If you have the basketball knowledge but lack the confidence and skills in knowing how to coach it, these courses could be worth considering.

Top Education Degrees

Within the public system and generally speaking in the private system too, teachers must teach in a field that matches their bachelor’s degree area of study. Science teachers generally have a bachelor’s degree in Science, History teachers generally have a bachelors degree in History – you get the idea.

This means that just because there is an opening for a health teacher, it doesn’t mean you can apply as the basketball coach if you studied Art. Again, don’t rush your choice.

Next, I want to get your brain buzzing. I have constructed a table listing courses closely aligned to basketball coaching and how long they will typically take to complete with links to more information on each course.

4-5 years – What!?

Don’t think of this study period as “lost time” because it’s not. Next, we will discuss what you can do either whilst studying or in your down-time to make your application stand out.

If this sounds like you, some schools both publicly and privately, give roles to staff outside the class along with their title of basketball coach.

Such roles are:

• Principle
• Assistant principle
• Librarians
• Athletic directors
• Co-ordinators

These roles, though I only named a few, almost always hold a degree higher than a bachelor’s. Carrying a Master’s degree is often seen in these jobs and is required by the hiring administrator or state body within the public system.

If you do hold a higher education degree such as a Master’s, this could be a road worth exploring along with coaching the basketball team.

How to Make Your Application Stand Out To Become A High School Basketball Coach

I want you to get the job over the next guy or girl.

Here are a number of ways you can make a huge impact, putting your best foot forward with bright, shiny shoes!

Be a student of the game.

Go and play the game yourself or start with becoming an assistant coach either through the school system or even at your local recreation center.

Consider working as a team manager, scorer or statistic person for your college sports team. These are great ways to observe different coaches and form new relationships.

Whilst becoming immersed in the game, start studying college games too. Take note of the offense you see used, watch specific defensive rotations, markdown inbounds plays and document particular coaching strategies of interest.

This flows on from point one. In order to gain more experience in the coach’s role, why not start coaching either one-on-one athletes or in small groups before or after practice?

You could even organize private coaching to boost your confidence and form new connections though you will need to find a venue to support this endeavor.

This is a “bonus gold star” on any application as most applicants may not take the time to learn or know it’s importance.

It is a skill to efficiently break down game tape so it can be used to teach and educate both staff and players.

Just because you don’t see yourself as a teacher doesn’t mean it’s not in the cards for you.

If there is lots of competition in your local area, consider either going back to school to learn a relevant field of study as we discussed earlier or investigate teaching jobs within the private sector.

A coach who is willing to “do more” for the school by teaching a class creates flexibility and is a great asset to the school.

Don Haskins

Donald Lee Haskins (March 14, 1930 – September 7, 2008), nicknamed "Bear", was an American. basketball player and coach. He played college basketball for three years under coach Henry Iba at Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State University). He was head coach at Texas Western College (renamed University of Texas at El Paso in 1967) from 1961 to 1999. His greatest triumph came in 1966 when his team won the NCAA Wildcat Tournament at the University of Kentucky, coached by Adolf Rupp. Watershed play ended racial segregation in college basketball.

During his time at Texas Western/UTEP, he compiled a 719–353 record after suffering just five losing seasons. He has won 14 Western Athletic Conference championships and four WAC titles, had fourteen NCAA tournament berths, and made seven trips to the NIT. Haskins spent 17 seasons with UTEP with over 20 victories and worked as an assistant coach for the Olympic team in 1972. ^[1]

He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997 by a basketball coach. His team is 1966 years old was fully inducted by the same Hall of Fame on September 7, 2007.

  Early coaching career

  After college and a job with the Artesia Travelers Amateur Athletic Union, Haskins began coaching small-town Texas high schools (Benjamin, Headley, and Dumas) from 1955 to 1961. He took a pay cut to get a chance to be a college coach, accepting a job offer at Texas Western College, now known as the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) in 1961. ^[2]

  In the 1950s, prior to Haskins' arrival, Texas Western recruited and played African American players at a time when it was still common to find all-white college sports teams, especially in the South. ^[3] When Haskins arrived in El Paso, he inherited three black players from his coaching predecessor. One of those players, El Paso native Nolan Richardson, later won the 1994 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament as head coach at Arkansas.

  In 1961–62, Haskins' first season as head coach, the Pitmen had an 18–6 record. the next year they posted a 19–7 score and made the first of 14 NCAA tournament appearances under Haskins. They made it to the NCAA Tournament again at 1964 and played in the NIT in 1965. On numerous occasions, Haskins has stated that he thought his 1964 team could have won the NCAA Tournament had All-American Jim Barnes not been fouled after playing just eight minutes in the losing streak. 64–60 against Kansas State in the tournament.

  In the first round of the tournament, the Miners beat Oklahoma City 89–74. In the next round, they defeated Cincinnati 78–76 overtime. They went on to defeat Kansas in double overtime in the Midwest Regional Final, 81–80, and defeat Utah in the national semi-finals, 85–78. ^[5]

  Facing the University of Kentucky tops in a championship game Haskins made history by first starting five African Americans in a championship game against an all-white Kentucky team coached by Adolph Rupp. The Miners took the lead halfway through the first half and never conceded it—although Kentucky came close to the point early in the second half. The Miners finished with 72 points to Kentucky's 65, winning the tournament and finishing the year with a 28–1 record. ^[6]

  Later, when asked about his decision to launch five African-American players, Haskins downplayed the decision. “I didn’t really think about starting a five black guys. I just wanted to get my top five guys on the court,” Haskins later said. "I just wanted to win this game." ^[7]

  Although credited with helping to desegregate college basketball teams in the South, he wrote in his book: Glory Road "I certainly didn't expect to pioneer a race or change the world."

  Post-Championship Career

  Although Haskins never replicated his 1966 success, he is still regarded as an important figure in basketball history. Among the players he coached at UTEP over the years were future NBA stars. Nate Archibald, Tim Hardaway, and Antonio Davis. Other UTEP alumni moving to the NBA include Marlon Maxey and Greg Foster. He also mentored several future coaches, including Nolan Richardson and Tim Floyd. He worked as an assistant coach under Hank Iba at 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich.

  A street in East El Paso is named after him. The arena where he coached is now known as the "Don Haskins Center".

  Bob Knight was Haskins' fishing partner and one of his best friends. Another good friend is Norm Ellenberger, former New Mexico Lobos coach.

  In 1997, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.

  Glory Road , and Disney released a movie about the 1966 championship season in West Texas on January 13, 2006. In the film, Haskins is portrayed as an actor. Josh Lucas. On November 29, 2005, the City of El Paso renamed the street between its two basketball arenas Glory Road. Adolph Rupp Jr. noted that his father had previously used the term "Glory Road" in his farewell speech to fans and was worried that his father would be labeled as a villain in the film. However, director Jim Gartner stated that Rupp Sr. would not be portrayed negatively in the film, stating that Jon Voight, who played Rupp, was careful in his role to avoid turning Rupp into a racist. ^[8]

  Haskins expressed his frustration ^[9] at montage scenes of his one-on-one games with childhood friend Herman Carr, an African American. Carr was in El Paso as a guest for the film's premiere on November 28, 2005. These scenes could reflect the formative influence on Haskins' basketball game. Haskins appeared in the film as an extra, playing a gas station attendant.

  Glory Road was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and is based on Haskins' official autobiography of the same name written with Dan Wetzel and released by Hyperion Books in 2005. A national bestseller, it was reprinted five times in its first four months of release and was selected by the editors of Editors' Choice magazine. New York Times book review.

  Death

  Haskins died at his home on September 7, 2008. He left behind a wife, Mary; three sons Brent, David and Steve and three grandchildren, John Paul, Cameron and Dominic. The fourth son, Mark, died in 1994. His son Steve is a professional golfer who started playing on the Tour of Champions after reaching the age of 50 and won two Nationwide Tour tournaments during his normal career years.
